To check or update Minecraft, first identify your edition and where it was installed. Java Edition uses the Minecraft Launcher and its selected installation; Bedrock Edition updates through the store or update controls for the device it is installed on. There is no single Minecraft-wide switch that turns on automatic updates everywhere. Use the route below for your platform, then check the launcher, store, or console screen for its update signal.
How do I tell whether I have Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?
Check the edition and installation source before following update instructions. Java Edition is managed through the Minecraft Launcher; Bedrock updates through the relevant device store or console controls. Similar-looking game names do not mean the update steps are interchangeable.

- Java Edition on PC or Mac: Open Minecraft Launcher and inspect the installation or release selected near the Play button.
- Bedrock on Windows: Check the Microsoft Store Library for Minecraft updates if your copy was installed through the Store. Confirm the edition and installation source first, since some publishers handle updates through their own software.
- Mobile, console, or Fire TV: Use the app store or device controls associated with the installed copy rather than the Java Launcher instructions.
The official Minecraft update instructions cover Java and Bedrock routes, while the Minecraft Help index lists separate help for Java and console updates. Menu names and layouts can change, so if a label below does not match your screen, look for the equivalent update control in your current device interface.
The device alone is not always enough to identify the route. A Windows computer can have Java Edition in the Minecraft Launcher, Bedrock from Microsoft Store, or another installation managed by its own software. A console can also show different instructions depending on whether you are using a current game or a legacy edition. Confirm where the copy came from before changing any settings.

How do I check and update Java Edition on PC or Mac?
In the Launcher, check the selected installation beside Play. Minecraft says the Launcher should show the latest release automatically; if it does not, choose Latest Release from the arrow beside Play.
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Inspect the selected installation or release near the Play button.
- If it is not set to the latest release, open the arrow beside Play and select Latest Release.
- Return to the launcher’s Play control and use the selected release to start the game.
Do not treat “the game opens” as proof that it is current: the Launcher can be set to an older installation. Check the selected release itself. If you intentionally use an older installation, changing to Latest Release changes which release the Launcher will start; choose the version you mean to use.
Java players sometimes keep separate installations for older worlds, mods, or compatibility. That is why the selected installation matters more than simply seeing a successful launch. If you need an older installation for a particular save, leave it selected deliberately and understand that it is not the same check as confirming the latest release.
The exact version number is not included here because the official instruction pages used for these steps do not state a current Java release number. The number can change, so use the release shown in the Launcher rather than relying on a fixed number copied from an older guide. For current release information, compare the Launcher’s available release with Minecraft’s current update information rather than with a number from an old post.
The documented route does not establish a separate automatic-update toggle that works identically in every Launcher build. The practical check is the release selector: let the Launcher present its latest release, then select Latest Release when the selector is on an older option.
How do I check and update Minecraft on Windows?
For a Bedrock copy installed through Microsoft Store, open the Store Library and select Get updates. This checks installed apps and games for available updates.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates to check for updates to installed apps and games.
- If Minecraft appears in the results, let the Store complete the update, then reopen the game.
If Minecraft is not listed, that does not by itself establish that the game is out of date. Confirm the copy’s edition and installation source, then check the update controls used by that source. Microsoft notes that some publishers manage updates through their own apps, and that Store updates may be paused.
Automatic updating is a Microsoft Store setting rather than a Minecraft-only control. Open Profile > Store Settings and turn on App updates. This applies to Store apps generally. If that setting is off, a manual Library > Get updates check may be needed. If Store updating has been paused, resume it before concluding that no Minecraft update exists.
After an update is offered, allow the Store to finish before launching Minecraft again. A download can still depend on an internet connection, available storage, and, where the platform requests it, a restart. The Store route applies only to the copy managed by Microsoft Store; it does not replace the Java Launcher route or another publisher-managed installer.

How do I turn on automatic updates for Minecraft?
Set automatic updates at the layer that manages your copy: the Launcher, app store, or console. Microsoft documents a Store-wide setting for app updates, while Minecraft’s instructions describe the Launcher showing the latest release and mobile stores prompting owners when an update is needed.
Microsoft Store on Windows
To enable automatic app updates, open Profile > Store Settings and turn on App updates. This setting applies to Store app updates generally; it is not a separate Minecraft-only switch. If updates are paused, check the Store’s update controls rather than assuming Minecraft has no update available.
Java Edition Launcher
Minecraft says the Launcher should show the latest release automatically. If the selected release is not the one you want, use the arrow beside Play and select Latest Release. The documented instructions do not establish a universal, separate automatic-update toggle for every Launcher build. Treat the selected installation as the deciding setting, especially if you have created profiles for older releases.
Mobile devices
Minecraft directs mobile players to search for the game in the Apple App Store or Google Play. Its instructions say an owner should see an update prompt if the installed copy is not current; if the store shows Open, Minecraft says the latest version is installed. For automatic installation, use the device’s app-store settings: the Minecraft instructions do not document every current iOS or Android settings screen.

Automatic downloads on a phone or tablet are controlled by the store account and device settings. They may also depend on the device’s network, storage, and operating-system policies. Because those controls change independently of Minecraft, use the current App Store or Google Play interface rather than following a menu path from an older device version.
Consoles and Fire TV
Use the console’s or Fire TV’s own update settings for automatic updates. Minecraft’s documented console routes are platform-specific, and the cited guidance does not establish identical menu paths or behavior for every console generation. The Fire TV instructions instead direct players to the device’s Store and the game’s update controls.
Automatic updates are not a promise that a new release installs immediately. The platform may still require network access, sufficient storage, a restart, or an action in its store or system interface; the official instructions do not specify a universal Minecraft update schedule. If an update is announced but is not yet visible, check again through the platform’s own update screen instead of assuming that every edition receives the same release at the same moment.
How do I update Minecraft on a phone or tablet?
Open the app store used for the installed copy, search for Minecraft, and check whether the store offers an update. Minecraft’s official instructions cover the Apple App Store and Google Play, but do not provide a complete current settings walkthrough for enabling automatic downloads on each device type.
- Open the Apple App Store or Google Play, depending on where you installed Minecraft.
- Search for Minecraft.
- If the store offers an update, select its update control and allow the download to finish.
- If the store shows Open, Minecraft says the latest version is installed.
To automate future downloads, use the app store’s update settings on the device. The control belongs to the store, so its name and location depend on the device and current operating-system interface. If the game was installed through a different managed source, return to that source instead of expecting the Apple or Google store to show it.

Searching for the app is also a useful identity check: confirm that the listing corresponds to the Minecraft copy already installed and that the store account is the one that obtained it. The update action applies to that installed listing; it is not a request to purchase a second copy.
How do I update Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch?
Console update paths differ. Follow the documented route for your platform and generation, and use the console’s current software-update controls if the displayed labels or edition do not match the instructions.
Xbox
- Open My Apps & Games.
- Select Minecraft, then open its more-options menu.
- Choose Manage game & add-ons, then Updates.
- If no update is listed on that screen, Minecraft says the game is fully updated.
An empty Xbox Updates screen is therefore a verification signal, not automatically a failure. If the game still behaves differently, confirm that you opened the Minecraft installation you actually play and check the console’s broader network and storage status.

Minecraft’s guide says the game should update automatically when console auto-updates are configured. To check manually, select the game, press Options, then choose Check for Update. This documented route is specifically for PlayStation 4; do not assume the same labels or behavior for every PlayStation generation.
The PlayStation 4 instructions distinguish between the console’s automatic-update configuration and a manual check on the game tile. If automatic updating is not configured, use Check for Update when you want an immediate status check. For another PlayStation generation, follow that system’s current software-update menu.
Nintendo Switch
Minecraft’s guide discusses the legacy Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition migration flow and eShop route. Because the guide’s instructions are tied to that edition context, use the Switch’s current software-update controls when your game or menus differ. The Minecraft Help index also links to a separate manual console-update article.
Do not apply the legacy eShop migration directions to every Switch installation without checking the edition context. The title shown on your system and the current Nintendo software-update controls determine which path is relevant.
Fire TV
Minecraft’s instructions describe opening the Store, finding Minecraft, and downloading its update. Then open the highlighted game’s More Info page and use its Update control if shown. These directions are specific to Fire TV and should not be substituted for mobile or console steps.
Fire TV is included because it uses its own Store workflow. It is not a Java Launcher route and should not be treated like the Microsoft Store or a phone app store.

Why can’t I see an update?
A missing update listing is not automatically an error. First verify that you are checking the right edition and installation source; then use the update signal for that platform.

Other practical reasons for a delayed installation can include no network connection, insufficient storage, a required restart, or a platform waiting for user confirmation. These are platform conditions, not evidence of a Minecraft-wide failure. Resolve the condition shown by the device, then run the same update check again.
These checks establish what the platform reports for the installed copy; they do not provide one universal version number to compare across Java, Bedrock, and every device. The official procedural pages do not give a current exact version number, and availability can vary by edition and platform. A number copied from an old article can therefore be misleading even when the update process itself is correct.
What should I check before changing update settings?
- Identify the edition. Decide whether the copy is Java or Bedrock before choosing a menu path.
- Identify the installation source. Use the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, Google Play, console store, or Fire TV Store that manages the copy.
- Check the platform signal. Look for the selected release, an Update button, an update prompt, or a console update listing.
- Review automation at that same layer. Store and console settings do not automatically control a separate Launcher installation.
- Allow the update to finish. Keep the required network connection available and follow any storage or restart prompt from the device.
This sequence avoids the most common mismatch: applying Bedrock store instructions to Java, or checking Microsoft Store when the Windows copy is managed by the Launcher or another publisher-controlled installer.

Do I need a separate tool or another purchase?
No. Checking a version and applying an update uses the installed copy’s Launcher, app store, or device controls. You do not need to buy Minecraft again, install a PC-optimization utility, purchase an accessory, or replace hardware to perform the checks described here. If a platform reports that the copy is current, there is no additional update-enabling product required by these instructions.

Can one automatic-update setting cover Minecraft on all my devices?
No single setting is documented for every platform. Each installed copy follows the controls of its Launcher, app store, or console.
What does “Latest Release” do in Java Edition?
It selects the latest release offered by the Minecraft Launcher instead of an older installation. Opening the game successfully does not prove that an older selected installation has been changed.
What does “Open” mean in the mobile store?
Minecraft says that when the Apple App Store or Google Play shows Open for Minecraft, the latest version is installed according to that store.
Does an empty Xbox Updates screen mean Minecraft is broken?
No. Minecraft says that if the Xbox Updates screen in the documented game-management path lists no update, the game is fully updated.
