On your PlayStation 5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The installed system-software version is shown there. If Up to date appears beneath the version, Sony says the console has the latest release installed. To look for a newer release, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings; an Update Available notice appears when Sony offers one. Sony does not document a consumer screen that lists every individual system-software module.
Find the installed PS5 system-software version
The version shown in Console Information is the authoritative on-console value for your PS5’s installed system software. It is separate from the console’s model number, serial number and storage details.

- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings (the gear icon in the upper-right corner).
- Open System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Read the value beside the system-software version.
Sony’s support page also identifies this screen as the place to confirm update status: You have the latest version installed if Up to date is shown under the system software version.
See the official instructions at PlayStation system software and application version support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe same page can show the PS5 console name, IP address and MAC address. Those network identifiers are useful when troubleshooting a connection or when PlayStation Support asks you to identify the console, but they are not additional software-module versions.

Check whether a newer update is available
Use the update-settings page when you want the console to check Sony’s servers rather than merely read the version already installed.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Wait for the console to check for an offered release.
- If Update Available appears, select Update System Software and follow the on-screen prompts.
If no update is offered, return to Console Information and use the version shown there as your record. A version number by itself does not tell you whether Sony has begun offering a newer release to your console; the update-settings screen supplies that status.
Sony’s current PS5 update instructions, including the labels above, are at PS5 system software update support. Menu wording can change after a major system-software redesign, so use the labels visible on your console if they differ slightly.

Version number, “Up to date” and “Update Available”: what each means
| What you see | Where it appears | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| A system-software version | Console Information | The aggregate system software currently installed on that PS5. |
| Up to date | Below the version in Console Information | Sony reports that the latest version is installed. |
| Update Available | System Software Update and Settings | Sony is offering a newer system-software release; choose Update System Software to begin. |
These screens answer the common questions “What firmware version is on my PS5?” and “Is my PS5 up to date?” They do not expose a separate version for every service, driver or internal component.
Can you see which PS5 system modules are installed?
Not through a documented consumer-facing menu. Sony’s public PS5 support material describes the overall system-software version and console-identification fields, but it does not document an inventory screen listing every individual installed module or component.
In practical terms, the version in Console Information is an aggregate release identifier. It should not be interpreted as a list of separately versioned modules. Avoid treating a hidden diagnostic code, a web search result or a third-party utility as an official module inventory unless PlayStation Support specifically directs you to it.
What to do when component-level information is required
- Record the exact system-software version from Console Information.
- Note the symptom, error message and the time it occurred.
- Use Sony’s documented update and troubleshooting flows before attempting any unofficial procedure.
- Contact official PlayStation Support if a repair, diagnostic log or component-specific check is required.
This approach gives support a reliable aggregate version without implying that the console provides a per-module report that Sony has not documented.

If the PS5 cannot complete an online update, Sony provides a Safe Mode procedure using an official update file and a USB drive. This is an update path, not a way to browse module versions.
Prepare the USB drive
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the drive’s top level, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official PS5 update file and save it in the
UPDATEfolder. - Name the file exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Folder and filename capitalization matters for this procedure. Do not leave the file inside an additional download or archive folder.
Install the update from Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5 completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Insert the prepared USB drive.
- Start Safe Mode by pressing and holding the PS5 power button. Release it after you hear the second beep.
- Choose Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Choose OK and allow the update process to finish.
Sony warns: Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Use the file supplied on Sony’s PS5 system software support page, and do not rename an unofficial file to make it appear valid.
If the USB update is not detected
- Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a different filesystem.
- Check the path character by character:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Make sure the file is not still compressed and that the extension is
.PUP, not a second extension such as.PUP.zip. - Download the official file again if it may be incomplete or corrupted.
- Reconnect the drive directly to the PS5 and repeat the Safe Mode sequence, releasing the power button only after the second beep.
These checks address file recognition and Safe Mode entry; they do not create a module list.

Do not confuse updating with reinstalling system software
Safe Mode includes a reinstallation operation as well as the normal update operation. Reinstallation is materially different: Sony documents it as an operation that deletes console data. It should not be used as a routine way to check your version or as the first response to an ordinary update notification.
For a version check, use Console Information. For a normal newer-release check, use System Software Update and Settings. Use the USB update only when the online route fails or Sony’s instructions tell you to. Consider reinstallation only after reading Sony’s current warning and confirming that you have handled any data you need to preserve.

The version is visible, but you are unsure whether it is current
Return to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The presence of Update Available is the console’s actionable indication that a newer release is being offered. If that notice is absent, record the version shown in Console Information and avoid relying on an unrelated version list from another region or console edition.
You cannot find “Console Information”
Start at the PS5 home screen and follow the complete path: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Do not stop at the first System Software page; the version is on the nested Console Information screen.
An update begins but does not complete
Use Sony’s update guide for the current recovery sequence. If the online process repeatedly fails, prepare the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and use the Safe Mode steps above. Keep the official file and exact filename intact.
You need an individual module or driver version
There is no documented consumer module-inventory screen to open. Provide PlayStation Support with the aggregate version, the console-identification information shown on Console Information, and the exact behavior or error you are investigating.
If you are checking the version before adding M.2 storage
Storage expansion is separate from checking system software. A compatible internal M.2 SSD is not required to view the version or install an ordinary update. It becomes relevant only if you are preparing to expand PS5 storage.
Sony’s M.2 guidance lists these requirements for a PS5-compatible drive:

| Total thickness with cooling structure | Up to 11.25 mm |
| Sequential read speed | 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended |

Sony says an installed M.2 SSD can store, download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media applications. Read the regional PS5 M.2 SSD installation guidance and the broader PlayStation 5 support hub before buying or installing a drive. These storage specifications do not provide additional system-module information.
