Begin with the label on the console
“PS4” and “PS5” describe product families, not one universal hardware design. Sony changed the optical-drive assemblies, cables and control electronics across revisions. The full model number is therefore the first compatibility check.

Find the label on the console chassis and write down every identifier before ordering. PS5 model codes begin with CFI; PS4 codes begin with CUH. Also record the number printed on the original drive or its daughterboard when the console is open. Keep a clear photograph of each label. A marketplace listing that says only “PS4 drive” or “PS5 Slim drive” is not specific enough to establish compatibility.

- Record the complete CFI or CUH code, including the digits after the hyphen.
- Photograph the original optical-drive assembly, daughterboard marking and cable connectors.
- Note whether the listing includes screws, brackets, flex cables and control electronics.
- Save the original board and cables until the replacement has been tested.
These records let you compare a candidate part against the console you actually own rather than against a broad retail name.

What disc drive is compatible with my PS5?
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 add-on disc drive is limited to the PS5 CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “Please note, the disc drive is compatible only with PS5® consoles (CFI-2000/7000 model group).” A CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not included in that compatibility statement, so do not order CFI-ZDD1 for it.

Do not use “PS5 Slim” as the only identification
Retailers often use names such as “PS5 Slim,” but the model-group code is the safer identifier. A listing that claims to fit a Slim console should still be checked against the CFI code printed on your chassis. If the seller does not state which CFI groups the part supports, ask for that information before ordering.
PS5 drives are paired hardware
A PS5 optical drive is not simply a universal plug-in mechanism. iFixit’s PS5 teardown summary reports: “Our test results indicate that the PS5’s optical drive is paired to its motherboard.” That pairing means a drive-only swap can fail even when the replacement mechanism appears physically identical.
Read the seller’s description for an explanation of the pairing requirement. The listing should state whether the original electronics must be retained, whether the supplied electronics are already appropriate for the console, or whether additional pairing work is required. Do not assume that moving a bare drive into the chassis will restore disc operation.
PS5 purchase checks
- Compare your chassis label with the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 groups accepted for CFI-ZDD1.
- Reject any listing that treats CFI-ZDD1 as universal or lists CFI-1000 Digital Edition as supported.
- Confirm whether the package contains the complete drive assembly or only a mechanism.
- Ask how motherboard pairing is handled and whether original electronics must be retained.
- Check that screws, covers, brackets and any required cable are included.
- Confirm the return policy in case the console rejects the assembly.
Can I replace a PS4 optical drive with any drive?
No. The PS4 family uses several CUH revisions, and the original 1XXX consoles also depend on the optical-drive daughterboard family. A replacement can be physically similar yet electronically incompatible.

Original PS4 1XXX: match the BDP daughterboard
For an original 1XXX PS4, compare the marking on the daughterboard with the replacement assembly. The documented identifiers are BDP-010, BDP-015, BDP-020 and BDP-025. iFixit’s PS4 guide states: “You can replace the the optical drive assembly by itself, but the replacement assembly must be compatible with the your optical drive daughterboard.”

The practical rule is simple: BDP-020 and BDP-025 form the documented cross-compatible pair. For BDP-010 and BDP-015, match the same family rather than assuming that any BDP board will work. If the listing omits the BDP marking, treat compatibility as unverified.

PS4 Slim CUH-20xx: verify cables as well as the assembly
PS4 Slim consoles in the CUH-20xx family require a model- and region-appropriate assembly. The replacement may not include every flex cable used by your console. The Slim repair guide notes that cables may need to be transferred from the original assembly, so compare the connector layout and cable inventory before ordering.
- Match the listing to the exact CUH-20xx family and stated regional or market version.
- Check whether the flex cables are included, and compare their length and connector shape with your originals.
- Confirm that brackets and screws are present if the listing photographs show them as part of the assembly.
- Keep the original cables until the replacement is installed and proven compatible.
A “PS4 Slim optical drive” description without a CUH family, cable information or return coverage is incomplete. The lower price is irrelevant if a required cable is missing or the regional assembly is wrong.
When the listing does not identify a BDP or CUH match
Do not infer compatibility from the drive’s appearance, connector count or the console’s color. Ask the seller for the exact model family and daughterboard marking supported. If the answer is unavailable, choose a part with a clearly stated match and a usable return policy instead.

Step-by-step replacement-part selection
- Identify the console. Read the complete CFI or CUH code from the chassis label. Do not rely on “digital,” “Slim” or “original” in a product title.
- Identify the original drive electronics. On an original PS4 1XXX, record BDP-010, BDP-015, BDP-020 or BDP-025. For a PS5, record the original drive electronics and note that motherboard pairing may apply.
- Filter candidates by model group. For PS5, accept CFI-ZDD1 only for CFI-2000 or CFI-7000. For PS4, require the correct CUH family and the appropriate BDP relationship.
- Compare what is physically supplied. Determine whether the part is a complete assembly, a bare mechanism, a board-and-drive set, or a drive without cables. Check brackets, screws and flex cables one by one.
- Check electronics and pairing. A PS5 listing must explain how the motherboard pairing requirement is addressed. A PS4 listing must identify the compatible daughterboard family.
- Confirm regional details. For PS4 Slim parts, verify the stated regional or market version when the seller lists one. Do not assume every CUH-20xx assembly is interchangeable across markets.
- Review the return policy. Select a seller that accepts a return for an exact-model mismatch or an incomplete package. Keep photographs of the listing and the unopened part.
- Preserve the original parts. Do not discard the original daughterboard, cables or screws until the console has been tested with the replacement.
Repair preparation and tools
Tools come after compatibility. Buying a premium screwdriver set cannot make an incorrect drive work. For the PS4 procedure documented by iFixit, prepare tweezers, a Phillips #0 screwdriver, a spudger and a TR8 Torx security screwdriver.
- Tweezers: useful for small connectors and cable ends.
- Phillips #0 screwdriver: used for the guide’s Phillips fasteners.
- Spudger: separates clips and helps lift connectors without prying on the cable itself.
- TR8 Torx security screwdriver: fits the security fasteners specified by the guide.
Unplug the console before opening it. Work on a clean, well-lit surface and photograph cable routing before disconnecting anything. Label loose screws by location rather than mixing them in one container. Flex cables crease easily; pull on the connector or reinforced tab, not on the exposed ribbon.
The original daughterboard and flex cables should stay with the console until the replacement has been demonstrated to be the right part. If a seller supplied a new board, do not swap it automatically: the PS4 daughterboard relationship and the PS5 motherboard pairing are the reasons the original electronics matter.

When two listings look similar, use the following order. A lower price should never outweigh a failed compatibility check.

If a listing leaves any of the first five cells unanswered, it is not a confirmed match. Contact the seller with your exact model code and a photograph of the original marking; a generic assurance that the part “fits all versions” is not enough.

Common failure points and what to do
The replacement is physically identical but the PS5 still does not read discs
Recheck the CFI group and the listing’s explanation of motherboard pairing. A bare mechanism may not contain the electronics associated with your console. Reinstall the original electronics if the model-specific instructions require them, and contact the seller before further disassembly if the package did not explain pairing.
An original PS4 1XXX accepts the drive but the optical system does not operate
Compare the daughterboard marking again. BDP-020 and BDP-025 are the documented cross-compatible pair; BDP-010 and BDP-015 should not be treated as interchangeable without an explicit match. Verify that the original daughterboard and its connectors were retained and seated correctly.
A PS4 Slim replacement leaves a cable unplugged
Stop before powering the console. Compare the replacement’s cable inventory with the original photographs and transfer the original flex cable when the model-specific guide calls for it. If the replacement uses a different connector or routing, treat that as a model mismatch rather than forcing the cable.
The package is missing screws, brackets or a cable
Do not substitute random hardware or close the console permanently. Photograph the missing item, compare the listing description and request a replacement or return. Keep every original fastener and cable until the case is resolved.

The iFixit PS4 guide used for the daughterboard compatibility details was updated July 1, 2024. Its PS4 Slim guide was updated January 3, 2026. Those dates identify the guide versions, not a guarantee of repair success. No published repair-success percentage is established here, so compatibility should be judged from the model code, board marking, included hardware and pairing requirements rather than from an assumed success rate.
Final decision rule
Order only when the complete console model, drive or daughterboard identifier, included cables and electronics requirements all agree. For PS5, that means CFI-ZDD1 with CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 and a clear plan for motherboard pairing. For an original PS4 1XXX, it means the correct BDP family, with BDP-020 and BDP-025 accepted as the documented cross-compatible pair. For a PS4 Slim CUH-20xx, it means the correct model and region family plus the cables needed for your console. If any one of those checks is unresolved, the compatible choice is to keep searching rather than gamble on a cheaper universal listing.
