The least expensive sensible setup for Grand Theft Auto VI starts with hardware you already own. Rockstar’s official platform list includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so an existing console in either family is already eligible. If you need a new system and buy games digitally, compare Xbox Series S bundles first. Choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X when you need a disc drive, want native-4K positioning, or already own a library and accessories in that ecosystem. Replace your television only if its resolution, latency, HDR, refresh rate or connectivity prevents you from using features you value.
Take-Two lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, at a standard price of $79.99. The game’s final resolution and frame-rate modes have not been published in the cited official material, so buying an expensive 4K/120Hz or 8K television solely on performance speculation is an unnecessary risk.

What you actually need to play GTA 6
Rockstar’s official announcement names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PlayStation 4 or Xbox One launch support is listed in the cited official sources. That makes the first budget decision straightforward: if you already have a PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, do not replace it simply because a newer television or a more expensive console might offer theoretical headroom.
Take-Two’s 2026 pre-order announcement gives the launch date as November 19, 2026 and the standard game price as $79.99. Taxes, delivery charges and regional pricing can change the amount you pay. Rockstar also says the physical version contains a download code usable for the digital download, so read the package description carefully before assuming a physical purchase includes a game disc.

Official platform eligibility
| Platform | Officially listed for GTA VI | What that means for your budget |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes | Keep an existing PS5; its accessories and digital library can reduce the cost of switching. |
| Xbox Series S | Yes | Potentially the lowest-cost new entry if all-digital buying is acceptable. |
| Xbox Series X | Yes | Consider it when you want a disc drive, native-4K positioning or more storage/performance headroom. |
| PlayStation 4 | Not listed in the cited official sources | Do not buy one expecting to play GTA VI. |
| Xbox One | Not listed in the cited official sources | Do not buy one expecting to play GTA VI. |
Start with the console you already own
An existing eligible console is normally the biggest saving because you avoid the hardware purchase, migration costs and duplicate accessories. Check its storage space, controller condition, HDMI cable and network connection, then reserve money for the $79.99 game and any genuinely necessary add-ons.
- Confirm the console is a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X, not an older generation model.
- Install the latest system software before launch rather than waiting for a large update on release day.
- Check free storage and delete or move games you no longer play; buy expansion storage only when the built-in space is actually insufficient.
- Test the controller, HDMI connection and power supply now. Replacing a failing cable or controller is cheaper than replacing a working console.
- Include the value of existing digital purchases, discs and accessories before considering a platform switch.
Choosing a new console
There is no single “best” GTA VI console in the published information. All three current systems are on Rockstar’s platform list, while the game’s final resolution and frame-rate modes remain undisclosed. Choose according to buying format, display, library and total cost rather than unverified performance claims.
Xbox Series S: the cost-controlled, digital-only route
Microsoft describes Xbox Series S as disc-free, designed for 1440p and able to upscale to 4K. That makes it a rational budget option for a player who buys downloads, uses a 1080p or 1440p display, or accepts upscaled output on a 4K television.
- Choose it when the lowest new-console spend matters most and you are comfortable buying GTA VI digitally.
- Remember that a disc-free console cannot read used game discs, borrowed discs or UHD Blu-ray movies.
- Compare bundle contents and storage before buying. A cheaper headline price can disappear if you immediately need another controller or expansion storage.
- Do not assume that “upscaled 4K” is the same as native 4K rendering. Microsoft’s description makes that distinction explicit.
Xbox Series S is officially listed for GTA VI, but Rockstar has not published a GTA VI-specific resolution or frame-rate target in the cited material. It is therefore a platform-eligible budget choice, not a guarantee of a particular visual mode.
Xbox Series X: discs, native-4K positioning and more headroom
Microsoft documents Xbox Series X with native 4K positioning and a UHD Blu-ray drive. Microsoft also lists 1TB and 2TB options among Series X variants. Those capabilities matter if you buy physical games, watch UHD Blu-ray discs, want more internal storage or own a 4K display that can make use of higher-end output.

- HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Choose Series X when physical games, resale, lending or UHD Blu-ray playback are part of your normal buying pattern.
- Choose it when your existing Xbox library and accessories make staying with Xbox cheaper than changing ecosystems.
- Pay the premium only for features you will use; native-4K positioning alone does not establish how GTA VI will render.
- Check the exact storage variant and bundle. Capacity differs by model, and the published information does not establish one universal Series X configuration.
PlayStation 5: the established PlayStation ecosystem
PlayStation 5 is an official GTA VI platform and supports output features including 4K at 120Hz, 8K televisions and variable refresh rate (VRR) over HDMI 2.1, according to Sony’s specification documentation. A PS5 is the sensible choice when you already own PlayStation games, controllers or subscriptions, or when the platform’s exclusive library and interface matter more than switching to Xbox.
- Choose the disc-capable edition if you buy boxed games, borrow discs or want a UHD Blu-ray-capable console; otherwise compare the digital edition for an all-download setup.
- Keep existing accessories in your calculation. Replacing controllers, headsets and charging equipment can make a supposedly cheaper switch more expensive.
- Do not buy an 8K television just because the console can output to one. Sony documents 8K support, not GTA VI rendering at 8K.
Decision matrix
| Your situation | Sensible choice | Reason | How to control spending |
|---|---|---|---|
| You already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | Keep it | It is on Rockstar’s official launch list. | Do not replace a working console for unpublished performance claims. |
| You want the lowest new-console cost and buy digitally | Xbox Series S | Disc-free, designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. | Avoid paying for a disc drive or native-4K hardware you will not use. |
| You buy physical games or UHD Blu-ray discs | Disc-capable PS5 or Xbox Series X | Both ecosystems offer disc-capable models; Xbox documents a UHD Blu-ray drive on Series X. | Compare the console premium with used-game savings, resale and disc prices. |
| You want native-4K positioning and more storage/performance headroom | Xbox Series X | Microsoft documents native 4K and 1TB/2TB Series X variants. | Buy only if your display and library benefit from those capabilities. |
| You already own PlayStation games or accessories | PlayStation 5 | It is an official platform with 4K/120Hz and VRR output support. | Count the value of retained games and accessories before switching. |
How to compare the real cost
Use the installed cost rather than the console sticker price. A low-priced digital console can become less economical if you routinely buy discounted discs, while a disc-capable system can cost more up front but allow resale and used-game purchases.

| Console | Current regional prices are not normalized in the cited material. | Compare the exact model, storage, bundle and warranty at checkout. |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | $79.99 standard price, announced by Take-Two for 2026. | Add taxes and regional pricing; do not assume the US list price applies everywhere. |
| Physical or digital edition | Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code usable for the digital download. | Check whether the package meets your disc, resale and account requirements. |
| Television | Only required if your current set lacks a feature you will use. | Keep a reliable screen unless latency, resolution, HDR or connectivity is a problem. |
| Storage expansion | Need depends on your library and free space. | Buy it after checking the console’s available storage, not pre-emptively. |
| Second controller or headset | Optional equipment; no universal requirement is established. | Add only for local multiplayer, replacement or a specific accessibility need. |
| Platform subscription | Requirements depend on the features you intend to use and current platform policy. | Verify the policy for your region before adding a recurring charge. |
A practical buying sequence
- Identify the console you own, if any, and confirm it is a PS5, Series S or Series X.
- Decide whether you will buy GTA VI digitally or need access to physical discs.
- Price the eligible console model, including the controller, storage and warranty actually included.
- Add the $79.99 game price, then account for local tax, delivery and currency conversion.
- Only after choosing the console, decide whether a television replacement solves a real limitation.
- Delay optional storage, headsets and second controllers until you know you need them.
When you should keep your current TV
Keep a reliable television if you are satisfied with its resolution, input response, HDR and screen size. GTA VI has no cited official 4K/120Hz performance guarantee, so a new panel cannot create a frame-rate mode the game does not provide.
A television upgrade is justified when the current set has visibly high input lag, no usable game or low-latency mode, inadequate HDR, a failing HDMI port, an unsuitable size for your viewing distance or no way to connect the console at the features you want.
Features worth prioritizing in a replacement
- 4K resolution: useful for current-generation console output and higher-detail games, but not proof that GTA VI will render natively at 4K.
- 120Hz panel: gives a console room to use 120Hz output when supported content provides it. It does not turn a 30- or 60-frame game into a 120-frame game.
- VRR: helps the display synchronize within its supported refresh range when a game’s frame delivery varies.
- HDMI 2.1: relevant for 4K/120Hz and VRR features on compatible ports. Confirm which physical inputs support the full bandwidth; not every port on every television does.
- HDR: improves contrast and highlight detail when the game and display are both configured correctly.
- Game or low-latency mode: reduces processing delay. Check independent measurements or manufacturer specifications rather than relying on a gaming label.
- Port count and placement: count the console, soundbar, receiver and other devices you will connect. One HDMI 2.1 port may be inconvenient if several devices need it.
- Warranty and return policy: dead pixels, uniformity issues and HDMI problems are easier to resolve with clear coverage.
Do you need 4K and 120Hz for GTA VI?
No. They are useful capabilities, not established requirements. Sony documents PS5 support for 4K 120Hz TVs, 8K TVs and VRR over HDMI 2.1. Microsoft documents compatible 4K/120Hz and VRR capabilities for Xbox Series consoles. The cited sources do not publish GTA VI’s resolution or frame-rate modes, and 120 FPS requires supported content.

If your current television is 1080p but responsive and dependable, it can still be a reasonable way to start. Upgrade when you want a larger image, HDR, lower latency or a clearer 4K picture across many games—not solely because a retailer advertises 120Hz.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy 8K is a poor GTA VI-only purchase
PS5 can support 8K televisions according to Sony’s specification, but that does not show that GTA VI will render at 8K or that an 8K panel will provide a visible benefit at your seating distance. Spend the difference on a better-sized 4K set, lower input lag, useful HDR, VRR or a longer warranty instead.
HDR and Dolby Vision considerations
A 2026 television comparison cited in the available material reports Dolby Vision gaming support on Xbox Series X but not PS5, and notes that Samsung televisions do not support Dolby Vision gaming. Treat this as a preference, not a GTA VI requirement. Choose the console first, then check whether your preferred television supports the HDR format you care about; standard HDR compatibility remains the more important baseline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match screen size to the room
Screen size should follow viewing distance and comfort, not a console logo. Sit where you normally play and compare the image at the distance available in your room. A larger screen can improve immersion but may expose low-resolution sources more clearly; a smaller screen can look sharper at close range and cost less.
- Measure the stand or wall location before shopping.
- Leave room for ventilation around the television and console.
- Check whether your seating angle remains comfortable; a wide viewing angle matters for rooms where people sit off-center.
- Compare input lag and VRR range at the size you want, because performance can vary by model and picture mode.
Common overspending mistakes
Buying a console for an unannounced performance mode
Neither Rockstar nor the cited platform documentation establishes GTA VI’s final resolution, frame-rate targets or quality/performance modes. Do not pay a premium based on forum predictions or retailer wording.

Buying a disc drive you will never use
If every game and film you buy is digital, a disc-capable model adds cost without adding value. Conversely, choosing a disc-free Series S and later discovering that you rely on used discs can cost more than selecting a disc-capable console initially.
Replacing a TV before checking settings
Enable the existing television’s game or low-latency mode, update its firmware, use the correct HDMI input and configure the console’s output before deciding it is inadequate. A setting change can solve apparent delay or HDR problems at no cost.
Ignoring bundle and regional differences
Console prices, taxes, delivery, storage variants and included accessories vary by country and retailer. Compare like-for-like bundles and record the final delivered price, not the advertised starting figure.
Buying storage and accessories pre-emptively
Storage expansion, a second controller and a headset are useful only when your play habits require them. Start with the included equipment, then add one item at a time based on an observed limitation.

Quick Recap
A low-waste setup plan
- Audit what you own: identify the console generation, free storage, controller condition, HDMI cable and television capabilities.
- Choose your buying format: digital-only points toward Series S or a digital PS5; physical games and UHD Blu-ray point toward a disc-capable PS5 or Series X.
- Set the game budget: reserve $79.99 in the United States based on Take-Two’s announced standard price, then add local taxes and currency effects.
- Price only eligible hardware: compare PS5, Series S and Series X models that are actually listed for GTA VI.
- Test the television: use game mode, verify HDR, check available HDMI inputs and confirm whether VRR works with your chosen console.
- Upgrade selectively: replace the TV only for a feature you will use, and buy storage or accessories only after measuring the need.
- Recheck at launch: Rockstar’s published technical details and retailer pricing may change before November 19, 2026. Confirm the final edition, requirements and local price before placing the order.
Bottom-line choices by budget priority
| Priority | Best-fit approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spend as little as possible on new hardware | Xbox Series S with a television you already own | Disc-free design and 1440p/upscaled-4K positioning. |
| Keep physical-game flexibility | Disc-capable PS5 or Xbox Series X | Higher initial hardware cost, offset potentially by used games and resale. |
| Use an existing library | Stay with your current PS5 or Xbox Series console | You may not gain newer display features, but you avoid a needless console purchase. |
| Improve image quality responsibly | Replace the TV only when it lacks 4K, HDR, VRR, HDMI 2.1 or low-latency features you will use | GTA VI’s exact modes remain unknown, so avoid paying for specifications without a practical benefit. |
