For most groups, choose Brass: Birmingham if you want a deep industrial economy built around shared infrastructure, resources and timing. Choose Factory Funner for a short, highly visual puzzle about physically fitting machines and pipes together. Choose Furnace when auctions and resource-conversion chains sound more appealing than a map network. Pipeline is the specialist choice for players who want refinery logistics and oil-market decisions.
“Factory-building” is not one mechanism. It can mean developing an industrial region, laying a literal production floor, bidding for companies or optimizing a refinery. The best purchase depends on the experience your group wants, not on which box uses the word “factory.”

What factory-building means in board games
Factory-themed games use different systems to represent production. Before comparing titles, identify which kind of factory you want to operate.
Industrial network and market economy
Brass: Birmingham treats industry as an interconnected regional economy. Players build canals and rails, develop industries, consume coal, iron and beer, and score from a changing network. Its official rules include cotton mills, coal mines, iron works, manufacturers, potteries and breweries. The factory is therefore not a single floor plan; it is a network of businesses and transport links whose value depends on what other players build and use.

Spatial pipe-and-machine puzzle
Factory Funner is the most literal interpretation. You place machines, supply tanks and reservoirs, then connect inputs and outputs with pipes. Every tile must fit physically, and an apparently good placement can remove connection options needed later. The game emphasizes simultaneous machine selection and the pressure of taking a tile another player may want.
Auction-driven conversion engine
Furnace represents a factory through ownership and processing. Players bid for company cards, extract resources and combine them into increasingly useful conversions. The production line is primarily a chain of cards and resources rather than a shared map or a measured pipe layout.
Refinery logistics
Pipeline focuses on an efficient refinery network, expert hires and the logistics of buying and selling refined oil. It is a useful alternative if the words “factory game” really mean market timing, contracts and network efficiency to you.
Quick comparison
| Game | Players | Published play time | Central mechanism | Interaction | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brass: Birmingham | 2–4 | 60–120 minutes | Hand management, network building and economic timing | Shared board, common network and market | Deep industrial economy and indirect competition |
| Factory Funner | 1–6 | 20–40 minutes | Spatial machine and pipe layout | Simultaneous selection and contested tiles | Fast, visual factory-floor puzzle; the only cited solo option |
| Furnace | 2–4 | 30–60 minutes | Auctions, company acquisition and resource conversion | Bidding and limited card availability | Shorter engine building with an auction focus |
| Pipeline | Not stated | Not stated | Refinery network, experts and oil logistics | Market and network efficiency decisions | Players specifically seeking refinery and oil-market play |
The player counts and times above are publisher or distributor specifications: Roxley’s 2026 product page lists Brass: Birmingham at 2–4 players and 60–120 minutes; Asmodee UK’s 2026 listings give Factory Funner 1–6 players and 20–40 minutes and Furnace 2–4 players and 30–60 minutes. They are not independent playtest averages.
Brass: Birmingham: the default choice for industrial depth
Roxley describes Brass: Birmingham as a heavy hand-management, network-building economic game about competing entrepreneurs in England’s West Midlands during the Industrial Revolution, from 1770 to 1870. That setting matters mechanically: your choices are tied to an evolving industrial system rather than an isolated personal tableau.
How its factory experience works
You play cards to build industries and transport links. Canals and rails connect locations, while industries such as cotton mills, coal mines, iron works, manufacturers, potteries and breweries create or consume resources. Coal, iron and beer are part of the operating economy, so a profitable plan can depend on infrastructure or resources that another player has supplied.

This creates interaction without requiring direct attacks. Players compete for useful spaces, routes and opportunities on a common board. Your network can make another player’s industry easier to use, while their construction can change the value of your next action. The result feels like participating in an industrial region, not merely upgrading a private engine.
Why it is the strongest all-purpose recommendation
- Large decision space: hand management, development, construction, resources, selling and transport are linked.
- Meaningful timing: the value of an action changes as the shared network and market develop.
- Indirect competition: players influence one another through common infrastructure and demand.
- Strong thematic match: “Industrial Revolution,” “build an empire” and “industrial economy” all describe its play more accurately than a generic machine-placement game.
Who should avoid it
This is the heaviest teach among the main three comparisons. GamesRadar characterizes its flow as complex and unfamiliar for new players, and it benefits from repeat plays. A group looking for a complete factory story in half an hour may find the 60–120-minute range and interconnected rules too demanding. It is also a poor choice if every player wants a private puzzle with no shared infrastructure.
Two-player suitability
Brass: Birmingham officially supports two players, so it is a valid choice for a pair that wants a substantial economic game. At two, the common board and market still provide the interaction central to the design, but the experience remains the heavier option in this comparison.
Factory Funner: the literal factory-floor puzzle
Factory Funner is the best answer to “Which game feels most like building a factory?” Asmodee UK lists it for 1–6 players and 20–40 minutes. Its product description calls it “A puzzle game where you lay pipe and daisy-chain machines together.”
The spatial problem
You lay machines, pipes, supply tanks and reservoirs, connecting the correct inputs and outputs. Space is the scarce resource. A machine that fits perfectly now may leave no route for a later connector, and a short pipe may be less useful than a longer route that preserves future choices. The central question is not simply “Can I place this tile?” but “What will this placement prevent?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy it works for mixed groups
The 20–40-minute specification makes a full game easier to schedule than Brass: Birmingham. The visible layout gives new players an immediate way to understand progress: machines occupy space, pipes connect them and reservoirs support the system. The rules can still produce dense decisions, because every placement changes the remaining geometry.

Interaction without a shared economy
Factory Funner creates competition through simultaneous machine selection. If two players want the same machine, one player’s choice removes that option for the other. The pressure is therefore about drafting and spatial opportunity rather than controlling a common market or transport network.
Player-count advantage
It is the only cited option that officially supports solo play and six players. That range makes it the most flexible recommendation for a household that sometimes plays alone and sometimes gathers a larger group. The 1–6 range does not mean every count feels identical; it means the published rules support those counts, while the contest for machine tiles becomes more relevant as more people select simultaneously.
Furnace: auctions plus a compact conversion engine
Furnace is the best fit when your group enjoys bidding and chaining resources. Asmodee UK lists it for 2–4 players and 30–60 minutes, describing it as an engine-building Eurogame in which players take the roles of 19th-century capitalists building industrial corporations.

The core loop
Players purchase companies, extract resources and process them through combinations. The Hobby World catalog describes bidding on company cards in a common row, using discs valued from 1 to 4. That auction is the main point of contact between players: your bid can secure a company, force someone else to pay more or leave an attractive card for another player.
What makes it different from Brass
Both games model industrial growth, but they ask different questions. Brass: Birmingham asks where and when to build within a shared regional system. Furnace asks which company to acquire, how much to bid and how to combine the resources that company produces. If you enjoy optimizing a sequence of conversions more than reading a map, Furnace is the clearer match.
Why choose it for a shorter session
Its published 30–60-minute range sits between the fast spatial puzzle and the longer economic network game. That makes it suitable for players who want auctions and an engine without committing to a two-hour session. It remains decision-dense: a short game does not eliminate the need to evaluate cards, bids and conversion order.

Pipeline: when “factory” really means refinery logistics
Pipeline is the specialist comparison rather than a general recommendation. Its rules reference frames play around building an efficient refinery network, hiring experts and managing the logistics of buying and selling refined oil.

If your favorite part of a factory theme is routing materials, timing purchases and sales, signing contracts and improving network efficiency, refinery logistics may be more appealing than cotton mills, pipe layouts or company auctions. The available comparison material does not state a player count or play time for Pipeline, so those specifications should not be assumed from the other games.
Choose by the decision you want to make
Use the following sequence instead of starting with theme alone.
1. Decide how long the table can stay occupied
- For 20–40 minutes, start with Factory Funner.
- For 30–60 minutes, consider Furnace.
- For a 60–120-minute economic session, choose Brass: Birmingham.
- For Pipeline, verify the current edition’s time before buying; the cited rules reference does not state one.
2. Decide whether the factory should be physical
If you want to see a production floor emerge through tiles and pipes, choose Factory Funner. If you want factories represented by companies, resources and a common industrial economy, choose Brass: Birmingham or Furnace. If you want refinery infrastructure and oil movement, choose Pipeline.
3. Pick your interaction style
| If you want… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shared infrastructure and market consequences | Brass: Birmingham | Players build into and use a common network. |
| Drafting pressure and contested spatial options | Factory Funner | Simultaneous selection can remove the machine another player wanted. |
| Direct valuation through bids | Furnace | Company cards are bought from a common row using numbered bidding discs. |
| Market timing around refined oil | Pipeline | Its focus is refinery logistics, experts and buying or selling refined oil. |
4. Match the published player count
- Solo: Factory Funner is the only cited game with official solo support.
- Six players: Factory Funner is the only cited option listed for six.
- Two players: both Brass: Birmingham and Furnace are officially listed for two; choose Brass for a long shared economy or Furnace for a shorter auction engine.
- Three or four players: all three main games support the count, so mechanism and session length should decide.
Is Brass: Birmingham too heavy for beginners?
For a first modern economic game, it can be. Its systems are unfamiliar to players who have not managed a shared network, multiple resources and hand-management timing before. That does not make it inaccessible; it means the first teach takes more care and the group may need repeat plays before the economy feels intuitive.
Use a teaching plan
- Explain the goal as building and profiting from an industrial network, not as a list of isolated actions.
- Introduce the resource system alongside the industries that create or consume coal, iron and beer.
- Show how canals and rails connect opportunities before discussing advanced timing.
- Demonstrate one legal turn, then let players see the market and board state before explaining every edge case.
- Schedule a second game if possible; the design’s decision space becomes easier to read after players have seen one complete economic cycle.
If your group is unwilling to spend that time teaching, Factory Funner or Furnace offers a shorter route into factory-themed decisions. They are not necessarily simple, but their core choices are narrower: fit the layout, or value the bid and conversion chain.

Common buying mistakes
Buying by artwork or setting alone
All four titles can look industrial while delivering different decisions. A historical setting does not guarantee a map game, and a machine illustration does not guarantee a long engine builder. Read the mechanism column first.
Ignoring the time range
A 20–40-minute spatial puzzle and a 60–120-minute economic game serve different evenings. Treat the published duration as the box’s stated range, not a promise that every first play will finish at the lower number.
Assuming “factory-building” means private optimization
Brass: Birmingham is deliberately interdependent: the shared network and market shape your opportunities. If you dislike other players benefiting from infrastructure you helped create, choose the more private-feeling spatial puzzle of Factory Funner or the auction-and-card interaction of Furnace.
Overlooking player-count needs
Do not buy a two-to-four-player title for a regular six-player group, and do not assume solo rules exist because a game has a factory theme. Among the cited options, only Factory Funner is listed for one through six players.
Final decision guide
- Best overall for a serious industrial economy: Brass: Birmingham.
- Best literal factory layout: Factory Funner.
- Best auction and conversion game: Furnace.
- Best specialist refinery comparison: Pipeline, if oil logistics and market timing are the attraction.
Start with the decision your group wants to repeat. Choose Brass: Birmingham when the pleasure is building into a living industrial network; Factory Funner when the pleasure is making every pipe fit; Furnace when it is winning the right company at the right price; and Pipeline when refinery logistics are the entire point.
