When console prices are high, choose by the games you want, where you will play, the library you already own and the full cost of playing—not by hardware price alone. A PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2 can be the right buy for different reasons; there is no universal best value.
Start with the games and your budget
Write down the games you most want to play, whether your friends play online, and which games or accessories you already own. Then set a total budget for the console and the way you expect to use it. A lower-priced system is poor value if it cannot play the games you care about.

Compare the cost over the period you expect to own the console: hardware, games, any subscription you plan to use, storage expansion, extra controllers and any needed accessories. Game prices and subscription terms change, so check current local listings before buying. On Switch 2, Nintendo says some new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to the system can have a different MSRP from their physical editions; retail partners set their own prices. Nintendo’s Switch 2 game-pricing information describes this policy.

Sony’s recommended prices are not the same as its PlayStation Direct listing amounts. The refurbished amounts above are live-store observations, not guaranteed offers. Nintendo’s $499.99 figure is the U.S. MSRP announced for September 1, 2026; its announcement says Latin American Switch 2 pricing would be shared later. Japan, Europe and other markets have separate timing, values and tax treatment. Xbox’s cited comparison page does not establish an exact current console price. Choose by the way you play
Choose PS5 if you want its games and disc option
The standard PS5 combines downloads with Blu-ray discs. That can make sense if you want to play compatible discs you already own or use physical copies. The Digital Edition removes that option and depends on digital access. Sony says that beginning in January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only; discs for games released before then can continue to be played on the cited console. A disc drive is therefore useful for existing and earlier physical releases, but it does not guarantee future PlayStation releases will have disc editions. Sony’s PS5 product information describes the models and the stated disc-release policy.
Consider PS5 Pro only if its higher-end graphics features for supported games are important to you. Sony notes that product design and specifications can change, so check the exact model and current listing.

Choose Switch 2 if portable play is a priority
Switch 2 is designed for handheld and docked play. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch, 1920×1080 LCD with HDR10 and VRR up to 120Hz. Its estimated battery life is about 2–6.5 hours, depending on game and usage; plan around your own travel and charging needs rather than treating that range as a guaranteed session length. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications provide the manufacturer details.
Choose Xbox by configuration, library and subscription fit
Xbox Series S is the smaller-storage route, with 512GB and 1TB configurations. Series X offers 1TB disc-drive, 1TB all-digital and 2TB disc-drive options. Xbox describes access to thousands of games across four generations and says Game Pass provides access to hundreds of games; availability and pricing vary by market. These catalog descriptions do not establish that a particular game is included now, so check the current catalog and subscription terms for the games you want. The Xbox comparison page also describes storage expansion cards.
Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 Xbox Wire statement says console storage and memory prices had increased by more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. Those are Microsoft’s claims, not an independent market study, and they do not establish an exact current Xbox price. Microsoft’s Xbox statement gives its account.

Check library compatibility before switching
Do not assume that a game, save, account or accessory will carry over just because two consoles share a brand. Confirm compatibility for the specific game and format, and check what transfers to the new system.
Recommended Free Tools
- Switch to Switch 2: Nintendo says the system plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. The original Switch dock and conventional microSD cards are not compatible for their former roles; Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express storage. Check both game compatibility and card type before reusing or buying accessories. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information explains the limitations.
- PS4 games on PS5: Sony says the cited PS5 supports PS5 and PS4 game collections on Blu-ray Disc and downloads. Check your game’s format and the model’s drive before counting an owned copy as usable.
- Xbox generations: Xbox describes access across four generations, but verify each specific game and any digital or disc requirements before relying on it.
Make a like-for-like value check
Before deciding that a cheaper console or bundle is the better deal, compare the exact package and your expected costs. Use this checklist:
- Console model, storage capacity and whether a disc drive is included.
- Games you intend to buy, including physical versus digital versions and any price differences.
- Subscription cost only if you plan to subscribe; confirm that the desired games are currently included.
- Expansion storage and accessories you actually need, including compatible card or drive type.
- For a bundle, the games and accessories included and whether you would have bought them anyway.
- For used or refurbished hardware, condition, included items, return terms and warranty.
- For a sale or refurbished listing, current stock and final checkout price.
Certified refurbished consoles can reduce the upfront cost: PlayStation Direct U.S. listed certified refurbished PS5 models when accessed. Compare the specific refurbished model against a new console on storage, drive access, included items, return policy and warranty rather than treating refurbishment alone as proof of better value.
Quick Recap
Match the purchase to your situation
- You already own physical games: Favor a model with the appropriate disc drive if those titles are compatible and you want to keep playing them.
- You mainly play on the go: Switch 2’s handheld and TV-connected design may matter more than a TV-only console’s hardware comparison; account for its variable battery estimate.
- You want the lowest hardware outlay: Compare Series S configurations and digital models with current local prices, then add storage and game costs. A low sticker price does not settle the value question.
- You have a large existing library: Check compatibility title by title before replacing or selling the old system.
- You want top-end supported graphics features: Compare PS5 Pro’s feature set with its substantial price premium and make sure the games you play support the features you value.
