How to Choose a Main Character in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Start with the Ease of Use rating, then choose the character whose range and pace match how you like to play. The official beginner guide recommends Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine; it describes Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy to learn, while Storm and Danger demand a more advanced approach. You only need to master one character to play effectively, so the best main is the hero you enjoy practicing—not a character claimed to be the strongest.

Why choosing one main works differently in Marvel Tōkon

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 team fighting game, but it is deliberately designed so you can concentrate on one character. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine explains that, unlike many team fighters, “you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” Your teammates contribute through assists and team actions rather than requiring four separate move lists at the same level of mastery.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That design changes the question from “Which four characters should I learn?” to “Which one character do I want to understand deeply, and which teammates give that character useful support?” You still make a four-character team, but your main is the fighter whose normals, skills, movement and routes you will practice most. The other three characters mainly expand your tactical options.

Use Ease of Use as your first filter

On the character-select screen, check the Ease of Use rating before worrying about tier lists or advanced combo videos. More stars mean the character is easier to operate. The rating is an execution guide, not a power ranking: a character with fewer stars is not automatically weaker, and a beginner-friendly character is not guaranteed to win more matches.

Character Official learning signal Who should try them first
Captain America Beginner-friendly; Startup Battle’s tutorial character Players who want a clear introduction to universal systems and a balanced starting point
Ms. Marvel Beginner-friendly New players who prefer her moves, personality or visual style and want a forgiving entry point
Wolverine Beginner-friendly; aggressive close-range example Players who want to pressure opponents at close distance
Iron Man Relatively easy to learn; ranged example Players who prefer spacing and powerful attacks from farther away
Spider-Man Relatively easy to learn Players who like his mobility and want an accessible hero outside the three explicit beginner recommendations
Storm Advanced playstyle Players willing to spend extra time learning unusual tools and execution
Danger Advanced playstyle Players looking for a more demanding technical challenge

The guide’s practical advice is to start with the hero you like most, learn that character deeply, and expand later. If two characters appeal equally, use Ease of Use to break the tie.

Match the character to your preferred range and tempo

Close-range pressure: Wolverine

Wolverine is the clearest official example of an aggressive melee character. His recommendation is especially useful for a newcomer who wants to stay in the opponent’s space rather than wait at long range. Because he is also beginner-friendly, you can learn pressure fundamentals without first taking on the execution burden associated with the advanced characters.

Choose Wolverine if you enjoy moving forward, forcing close interactions and making your turn continue through attacks and assists. During practice, pay attention to how quickly his normal attacks reach the opponent and whether that pace feels natural to your hands. The correct test is not whether the character looks exciting in a trailer; it is whether you can consistently start your offense and recognize when to stop.

Ranged control: Iron Man

The official guide pairs Wolverine’s aggressive close-range style with Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks. That makes Iron Man the sensible first experiment for players who prefer to manage distance, attack from farther away and make the opponent approach.

His relatively easy learning curve lets you study spacing and projectile-oriented control before attempting Storm or Danger. In Training Mode, check whether you can maintain a comfortable distance, confirm an attack into a Skill and call an assist without losing track of your position.

A balanced, iconic starting point: Captain America

Captain America is the safest default recommendation when you do not yet know what archetype you prefer. He is the character used in Startup Battle, and the guide explicitly lists him as beginner-friendly. That combination gives you a structured way to learn blocking, attacks, assists and team rules before committing to a specialized style.

Accessible alternatives: Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man

Ms. Marvel is one of the three official beginner recommendations, so she is a strong choice when personal attachment matters more than a preselected archetype. Spider-Man is described as relatively easy to learn and offers another accessible option if you want to start with a character whose identity immediately motivates you to practice.

The available guidance does not establish a complete range or role description for every launch character. Do not infer a character’s exact strengths from the name alone; use the in-game rating, try the normals and test the assist in Training Mode.

Advanced execution: Storm and Danger

Storm and Danger are identified as more advanced. Pick one when the challenge itself is part of the appeal and you are prepared to spend more time in Training Mode. The official material does not say that either is stronger than the beginner choices, and there is no authoritative tier list or balance data here to support such a claim.

A practical test for your first main

Use the same short process for every candidate. It prevents a flashy first impression from turning into a frustrating ranked experience.

  1. Read the Ease of Use stars. Treat them as an estimate of operating difficulty. If you are new to fighting games, begin with Captain America, Ms. Marvel or Wolverine; if you already enjoy execution-heavy games, include Storm or Danger in your trial.
  2. Complete Startup Battle with Captain America. It teaches the basic systems in a controlled sequence. Even if Captain America will not be your main, the tutorial gives you a common reference for movement, defense and team actions.
  3. Open Training Mode and start with Quick Skills. Quick Skills use one-button actions, letting you concentrate on spacing and timing before adding more demanding inputs.
  4. Check the normal-attack range. Stand at several distances and notice where Light, Medium and Heavy attacks connect. A character whose preferred distance feels intuitive will usually be easier for you to practice consistently.
  5. Learn one Link Attack route. Repeated Light attacks can chain into a Skill and trigger a Break. Medium chains lead to a Super Skill, while Heavy chains lead to an Ultimate Skill. Start with one route you can perform reliably rather than collecting a long list of situational combos.
  6. Add one assist. Press × to call an assist; directional inputs select different teammates. The beginner guide recommends learning assists before relying on direct switching, so first understand what your chosen teammate contributes when called.
  7. Test one switch route. After the assist feels comfortable, practice changing characters and returning to your main. The objective is not to master the entire team immediately; it is to know how your main can safely re-enter the fight.
  8. Play a low-pressure match. Use Episode Mode or local Versus to see whether the character remains comfortable when an opponent moves unpredictably. Only then take the character into ranked online matches.

Understand the input options before judging difficulty

The game offers both Quick Skills and traditional Command Inputs. Quick Skills are one-button actions intended to help beginners get a character’s tools on screen quickly. Command Inputs require more precise motions but provide slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge.

This creates a natural progression rather than a forced choice. Start with Quick Skills while learning movement, blocking, Link Attacks and assists. Once those actions are reliable, convert the moves you use most to Command Inputs and compare how the extra damage or Skill Gauge changes your decisions. A character should not be rejected simply because you cannot perform every command immediately.

Build the rest of the team around your main

Evaluate a team on four axes: range, execution demand, assist utility and personal enjoyment. The official guide recommends combining close-range and long-range specialists, but it also says the best team is ultimately the one made from your favorite heroes.

Range coverage

A team with a close-range main can benefit from a teammate whose assist helps control space, while a ranged main may appreciate a teammate that makes approaching safer. The Wolverine-and-Iron-Man example illustrates the principle without claiming that it is the only correct team.

Execution load

If your main is Storm or Danger, consider whether the other team members make your practice schedule heavier. Because you only need to master one character, keeping the supporting characters simpler can leave more time for your primary game plan. Conversely, a team of favorite characters is valid even when its learning curve is higher.

Assist-first learning

Learn what each teammate does when called before attempting elaborate tag sequences. Directional assist selection gives you access to different partners, so test the timing, coverage and recovery of each option in Training Mode. The goal is to know which assist helps your main approach, continue pressure or escape a difficult position.

Know when the other team members become available

You do not begin a match with all four characters active. At the start, only the first two team slots are available. A successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or losing a round, unlocks the third and fourth characters.

This staged access matters when you practice team plans. A strategy that depends on the fourth character cannot be used immediately, so first develop an opening plan that works with the two available characters. Then practice how your main benefits when later slots open. Losing a round is also part of the documented unlock behavior; it is not a sign that your team selection failed.

Common selection mistakes

Picking a character because someone calls them “the best”

No independent balance statistics, matchup data or authoritative tier list establish a strongest main in the available official material. Character strength can change with patches and player discoveries. Choose from ease of use, range, execution and enjoyment instead of an unsupported ranking.

Trying to master all four characters at once

The game’s structure intentionally reduces that burden. Focus on one main, learn a small number of useful assists and understand when the later team slots unlock. Expand your roster knowledge after your main’s basic decisions become automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting with advanced characters only because they look impressive

Storm and Danger may be rewarding, but their advanced designation means you should expect a longer practice period. If repeated execution errors stop you from learning neutral and defense, test a beginner-friendly character first and revisit the advanced choice later.

Taking an untested character straight into ranked play

Ranked matches add pressure that can hide whether a character actually suits you. Startup Battle, Training Mode, Episode Mode and local Versus provide a clearer sequence for testing fundamentals before your first ranked set.

So which character should you try first?

Choose Captain America if you want the most structured introduction. Choose Wolverine if close-range aggression is the reason you play fighting games. Choose Iron Man if you prefer ranged control and spacing. Choose Ms. Marvel or Spider-Man when personal attachment points you toward an accessible alternative. Choose Storm or Danger when you specifically want a more demanding learning project.

Whichever character you select, keep the first goal narrow: learn the character’s range, one Link Attack route, one assist call and one switch. Because Marvel Tōkon is built around deep mastery of a single character, that focused approach is not a shortcut; it is the intended way to begin.
