Choose Space Engineers if your group wants to design and build ships, stations, and planetary outposts together. Choose No Man’s Sky for exploration, base building, and cooperative missions across a broader platform mix. Choose EVE Online if your friends want a persistent economy, corporations, politics, and large-scale conflict. Choose Elite Dangerous if the main attraction is realistic-feeling piloting, navigation, trading, and the scale of a recreated Milky Way.
The right choice depends less on which game has the largest universe than on how your group spends an evening, how much complexity it accepts, and whether your shared world should continue changing when nobody is online.

Start with the group you actually have
A multiplayer space sandbox can mean two very different things. In one, a few friends host a private world, build a project, and leave when the session ends. In the other, the game is a persistent online society in which markets, alliances, wars, and territorial decisions continue without the whole group present. Both are called “space sandboxes,” but they create very different commitments.

If your friends are split, ask what they want to do during the first three sessions, not what sounds impressive in a trailer. “Build a working carrier,” “run missions together,” “join a corporation,” and “learn to land and trade” are different contracts with your group.
Comparison at a glance
| Game | Best fit | Typical group structure | Persistence and social pressure | Documented capacity or scale | Learning burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Space Engineers | Collaborative construction and physics-driven experimentation | Private or dedicated-server sessions; cooperative or competitive play | Your group can control privacy and objectives; PvP is optional by setup | Up to 16 players on PC and 4 on Xbox One X in the cited feature-page version | High construction and systems learning; goals are largely self-directed |
| No Man’s Sky | Exploration, bases, and structured co-op missions | Friends joining a shared adventure; multiplayer missions begin from the Space Anomaly | More guided than a pure construction sandbox; less dependent on an enduring player economy | The cited Beyond update lists 16 in the Space Anomaly, with network caps of 8 on console and 32 on PC | Moderate; broad activities with less engineering overhead |
| EVE Online | Economy, corporations, politics, and organized conflict | Persistent MMO groups, corporations, and alliances | Consequences continue in a shared world; open competition and PvP are central possibilities | More than 7,000 star systems; an Epic Games listing records an 8,825-player conflict | Very high; terminology, planning, logistics, and social coordination matter |
| Elite Dangerous | Piloting, trading, navigation, and long-distance discovery | Players operating in a connected galaxy, with activities chosen by each pilot | Open-ended multiplayer experience; the cited listing does not establish a small-group player cap | The Epic Games listing describes a Milky Way recreation containing 400 billion star systems | High for flight controls, navigation, and route planning |
These figures are tied to the specific pages and versions described in the source material. Player limits, platform support, and feature matrices can change, so verify the current build for every platform your group owns before buying or hosting.
What kind of multiplayer world do you want?
Private project or public society
Space Engineers is the clearest choice when the “world” is a project your group owns. You can play offline, host privately, or use a dedicated server, then decide whether the session is cooperative or competitive. That control is valuable when schedules are irregular: the group can agree on a base, ship, or survival objective without having to participate in a larger society.

No Man’s Sky also supports a friend-focused adventure, but its structure is built around exploration, bases, and missions. The Space Anomaly acts as a social and mission hub, and multiplayer missions are initialized from the Nexus in the cited Beyond update. This gives a group something to do together when nobody wants to invent an engineering challenge from scratch.
EVE Online asks for a different relationship with the game. Its sandbox is persistent, and the official description emphasizes exploration, immense PvP and PvE battles, and a player economy across more than 7,000 star systems. Your group may become a corporation, trade, mine, scout, fight, or negotiate; decisions have meaning because other players and organizations share the environment.
Elite Dangerous supplies the feeling of operating in a connected galaxy rather than a private construction site. The appeal is the act of flying, plotting routes, trading, and discovering distant places. It is a good fit when friends enjoy parallel journeys and meeting up for a destination, but it is less suited to a group that needs every player engaged in one shared construction task.

Session-based play versus ongoing commitment
For a weekly two-hour session, a host-controlled Space Engineers world or a No Man’s Sky mission is easier to scope. You can define a start point and an objective, then stop. EVE Online rewards groups that maintain roles, schedules, and communication between sessions; an alliance operation can depend on preparation performed by people who are not online at the same time. Elite Dangerous sits between those models: a short session can contain a delivery or local flight, while exploration and travel can become long-term personal projects.
Match the core activity to your friends’ motivation
Building and problem-solving: Space Engineers
Space Engineers is an open-world sandbox defined by creativity and exploration. Players build ships, stations, and planetary outposts, pilot vessels, gather resources, and survive. Its creative and survival modes support different moods: creative removes much of the resource pressure so the group can prototype, while survival turns logistics and risk into part of the challenge.
The important question is whether your group enjoys designing a solution, testing it, and rebuilding it after failure. Construction is not a cosmetic layer. A ship’s layout, power, propulsion, storage, and defenses become the activity. Physics and resource constraints can produce memorable teamwork, but they also mean that one enthusiastic builder can leave everyone else feeling like an assistant.
- Pick this game when at least one player enjoys teaching construction systems and maintaining a shared plan.
- Agree on a project scale before starting: a mining vessel, orbital station, or planetary base is easier to coordinate than “build everything.”
- Decide whether mods and Workshop content are acceptable, because additions can change the learning curve and the server’s requirements.
Exploration and guided co-op: No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky is the safer choice when players want variety without signing up for an MMO organization. Exploration, base building, and cooperative missions can coexist in one play group, so a player who prefers collecting and a player who prefers objectives can still share a session.
The Beyond documentation describes the Space Anomaly as holding 16 players on all platforms and lists network maximums of 8 on console and 32 on PC for that release. Those are not interchangeable promises: a social hub capacity, a network cap, and the number your current platform build permits may differ. Treat them as historical, version-specific guidance rather than a guarantee for today’s installation.
Use No Man’s Sky when your group wants a clear meeting place and mission structure, but does not need every decision to be engineered by hand. It is also the most forgiving option here for a mixed group whose members have different levels of interest in systems mastery.

Economy, politics, and conflict: EVE Online
EVE Online is for a group that regards other players as part of the content. The official site presents professions including war, politics, piracy, trading, and exploration, alongside a player economy that changes as people produce, move, buy, and destroy goods. The result is less like a private adventure and more like joining an operating society.
The scale is not merely marketing language. The official site describes more than 7,000 star systems, while the Epic Games listing records a Guinness World Record conflict involving 8,825 players. Those facts illustrate the game’s ceiling, not the size of your first evening. A new corporation still has to learn communication procedures, fitting and logistics concepts, travel risks, and the social expectations of the group it joins.
Select EVE when your friends enjoy planning, specialization, and consequences. One player can focus on industry, another on scouting, another on diplomacy, and another on combat. That interdependence is its strength, but it can become a job if the group treats every operation as mandatory.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Piloting and a vast connected galaxy: Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous is the specialist choice for players who want the ship itself to be the primary instrument. The Epic Games listing describes a connected galaxy recreating the Milky Way at 400 billion star systems and frames the game as a massively multiplayer space epic. The attraction is scale combined with the routine of flying: choosing a destination, managing a route, arriving, docking, trading, or continuing outward.
This is a strong fit for friends who enjoy practicing controls and comparing routes, ships, or careers. It is weaker for a group that expects constant physical proximity, because pilots can pursue different activities and distances. Set a rendezvous system or station before a session so that “playing together” has a concrete meaning.

Space Engineers explicitly offers offline, private, public, and dedicated-server choices, but its cited feature page gives different player limits for PC and Xbox One X. No Man’s Sky’s cited numbers also differ between console and PC and distinguish the Space Anomaly from network play. EVE Online and Elite Dangerous are presented as large connected online environments rather than small-session products; the cited material does not provide a directly comparable four-player cap for either.

Because these details are volatile, check the current store and support pages immediately before purchase. A platform update can alter a cap, and a console edition can have a different feature set from the PC release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the complexity your group will sustain
Low coordination tolerance
Choose No Man’s Sky if players want to drop in, follow a mission, explore, and build without studying a large player-run economy. Establish one meeting location and one optional objective per session. This keeps the group moving even when interests diverge.
High interest in systems and experimentation
Choose Space Engineers if the group enjoys tutorials, diagrams, test flights, and learning from failures. Start in creative mode to teach construction, then create a survival world when everyone understands the basic workflow. Keep the first shared design deliberately small so that new players contribute meaningful components.
High tolerance for preparation and social rules
Choose EVE Online only after agreeing on communication and attendance expectations. Decide who handles recruitment, logistics, finances, and conflict decisions. A corporation that has no answer for those responsibilities will make the game feel confusing even when the underlying activities appeal to everyone.
High tolerance for controls and travel time
Choose Elite Dangerous when players are willing to practice flight and accept that travel is part of the experience. Set a common destination, choose a travel window, and let players branch into their preferred activity after arriving. If nobody enjoys navigation or cockpit procedures, the game’s central pleasure will not have a chance to emerge.

A practical group decision procedure
- Write one sentence per player: “I want to build,” “I want to explore,” “I want to trade and organize,” or “I want to fly.” Look for the dominant verb rather than the most ambitious description.
- Set the social boundary: Decide whether unexpected PvP, public players, and economic loss are welcome. A friends-only session and an open MMO require different expectations.
- Set the time boundary: Choose whether a satisfying session must fit into one evening or may depend on work done between meetings.
- Check hardware and platform: Record each player’s platform, edition, network availability, and intended headcount.
- Run a short trial objective: Build one small vehicle, complete one cooperative mission, organize one low-risk corporation activity, or fly to one agreed destination.
- Review the friction: After the trial, ask what consumed time: construction menus, travel, coordination, or finding a common objective. Choose the game whose friction your group considers part of the fun.
Common mismatches and how to avoid them
“Everyone likes space, so any space game will work”
Space is the setting, not the activity. A player who wants to design machines may dislike long travel. A trader may dislike a private world with no meaningful market. A builder may find a persistent political game exhausting. Name the activity before selecting the universe.
“The largest player number means the best multiplayer experience”
Large caps describe potential scale, not group quality. A small team can have a better session in a controlled world than in a crowded public environment. Use capacity to rule out an impossible group size, then decide based on persistence, activity, and complexity.
“We can decide the social rules later”
Open competition changes the emotional contract. In EVE Online, player conflict and economic consequences are part of the identity. In Space Engineers, privacy settings let a host shape the experience. In the other two games, establish meeting points and acceptable levels of interruption before the first session. Clarifying this early prevents a cooperative player from feeling ambushed by a competitive format.

Technical hosting does not solve scheduling. If half the group can play once a month, a persistent organization may create obligations they cannot meet. Conversely, a group that wants a continuing project may outgrow disconnected sessions. Match the game’s persistence to your calendar, not to an idealized version of your group.
Final decision
Pick Space Engineers for shared construction, creative problem-solving, and control over the play space. Pick No Man’s Sky when exploration, bases, and cooperative missions must work for a broad mix of players and platforms. Pick EVE Online when your friends want a living economy and social conflict that continue beyond a single session. Pick Elite Dangerous when the core fantasy is learning to operate a ship and crossing a galaxy whose scale is the point.
When two options still look equal, run the smallest possible trial described above. The game your group willingly discusses between sessions—not the one with the biggest number on a store page—is the one most likely to become your shared sandbox.
