For METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 on Steam, Konami’s requirements say an “Xinput Controller required,” and the Steam listing identifies Xbox Controllers as supported. A controller is required to play this cited Steam release, so an XInput pad is the lowest-risk choice for a new purchase.
A DualSense or DualShock controller can also work, but the same official Steam listing specifies USB-only support for those PlayStation families. If you already own one and are happy with its layout, use a reliable USB data connection; otherwise, buy an XInput model and avoid unnecessary compatibility decisions.

The short answer: buy XInput unless you already prefer a USB PlayStation pad
This guide is about the PC/Steam version of METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1, the release covered by Konami’s Steam system requirements and store listing. Those official materials establish three practical facts:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Konami states that an XInput controller is required.
- The Steam listing names Xbox Controllers as supported and recommends playing with a controller.
- The listing names DualShock Controllers and DualSense Controllers, each marked “USB Only.”
That makes an Xbox-style XInput controller the sensible default. It is not a claim that every Xbox-shaped pad is automatically compatible; the important property is that the exact model presents itself to the PC as XInput. A PlayStation pad remains a reasonable alternative when you already own one, prefer its ergonomics, and can play over USB.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The official material does not provide model-by-model rankings for latency, battery life, vibration, durability, or wireless reliability. Those characteristics vary by controller and configuration, so choose on documented compatibility, layout, connection method, and ownership rather than on unsupported performance claims.
What “XInput controller required” means
XInput is the compatibility standard to verify
XInput is the controller interface commonly used by modern Windows games. For this collection, it is the compatibility anchor named by Konami. When a product page says a controller has an XInput mode, that is more useful than simply seeing the words “PC compatible.” “PC compatible” can describe several input standards; only the exact model’s documentation can confirm whether it exposes XInput.
Look for wording such as “XInput,” “X-input,” or a documented PC/XInput mode in the controller’s manual. If the manufacturer lists only a generic gamepad, DirectInput, console-specific compatibility, or mobile support, treat that as unverified for this release until the documentation identifies XInput.
Why the standard matters in practice
An XInput device gives the game a familiar controller identity and normally requires less translation between the operating system, Steam, and the game. It also makes the default button arrangement easier to interpret: the game’s on-screen prompts are designed around the Xbox-style naming convention used by the supported controller category.
That does not make every non-XInput device unusable, nor does it guarantee that every game in every edition of the series has identical behavior. It does mean that buying an explicitly XInput-capable controller follows the publisher’s stated requirement instead of asking a remapping layer to compensate for an uncertain interface.
Controller choices compared
| Choice | Best for | Established constraint | Practical recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox-style XInput controller | New buyers who want the lowest setup risk | Konami requires XInput; the Steam listing supports Xbox Controllers | Default pick |
| DualSense | Players who prefer PlayStation ergonomics and symbols | The official listing specifies USB-only support | Strong alternative when wired play is acceptable |
| DualShock 4 | Owners of an existing PS4 controller | The official listing specifies USB-only support | Use an existing pad before buying another; purchase only if its layout is your preference |
| Other third-party PC pad | Buyers comparing shape or price | The exact model must expose XInput; compatibility is not established by the brand name alone | Consider only after checking the model’s documentation |
“USB-only” is an important buying constraint, not a performance score. It tells you how the Steam listing defines support for the named PlayStation families. Wireless behavior for other models remains dependent on the controller, its firmware, the operating system, and the way it is configured.

A decision process that avoids compatibility surprises
1. Confirm the edition you intend to play
Start with the exact product page in your Steam library. The evidence summarized here applies to METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 on Steam. A different PC port, an individual legacy release, an emulator, or a console version may expose different requirements and button behavior. Do not assume that a controller rule stated for this collection automatically describes every Metal Gear Solid release.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Decide which button layout you read fastest
Xbox-style and PlayStation-style controllers place their face buttons differently and label them differently. Neither layout is objectively better for stealth, aiming, menus, or codec interactions; the useful question is which symbols your hands recognize without hesitation. If you regularly play PC games with Xbox prompts, an XInput pad is likely to minimize mental translation. If you have years of muscle memory on a DualSense or DualShock, that familiarity can outweigh the extra USB requirement.
3. Treat the connection as a requirement
For a new purchase, select a model with a clearly documented XInput mode. Decide whether you are willing to use a cable every session. If you choose DualSense or DualShock for this collection, plan around USB because the official listing labels those controller families “USB Only.” Do not buy a PlayStation pad expecting the store listing’s support statement to guarantee Bluetooth operation.
4. Check what you already own
An existing DualSense or DualShock may be all you need if it is in good condition and you can connect it by USB. Buying an additional controller only to obtain Xbox-shaped buttons is optional, not required by the evidence. Conversely, an old third-party pad that is comfortable but exposes only an unspecified or non-XInput interface is not a safe default for this collection.
5. Verify the exact model, not just the product family
Controller families often contain revisions with different connection modes. Before checkout, find the manufacturer’s page or manual for the precise model number and confirm:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- an explicit XInput mode for Windows, if you are not buying one of the named PlayStation options;
- the included cable is a data cable when USB play is required;
- the operating mode can be selected without proprietary software that you do not intend to install;
- the return policy covers a compatibility problem.
If the documentation does not state XInput, classify the controller as uncertain rather than assuming that “PC” on the box is sufficient.

How to set up an Xbox-style XInput controller
- Connect the pad before launching the game. Use the controller’s documented Windows connection method. A wired connection is a useful first setup because it removes wireless pairing and battery variables.
- Check that Windows and Steam see the device. Confirm that the exact model appears as an active game controller and that its buttons and sticks respond. If it is listed only as a generic device, consult the controller manual for its XInput mode and switch modes before opening the game.
- Start the Steam release after the controller is active. Launch METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 with the intended pad connected. Starting with one controller attached makes it easier to identify which device the game is using.
- Open the game’s controller settings. Use the controller options documented in Konami’s official online manual. Confirm that movement, camera control, face buttons, triggers, bumpers, and menu navigation respond as expected.
- Test a complete input cycle. Move through a menu, start a game, move the character, use the camera, and return to a menu. A successful desktop detection is not enough if one control is assigned incorrectly in-game.
- Save the working arrangement. Keep the same connection mode and controller order for later sessions. If you change from wired to wireless or add another pad, recheck the game’s detected device and bindings.
The purpose of this sequence is to establish a known-good XInput path before troubleshooting individual games or settings. It does not claim that every controller uses the same Windows menu names; follow the labels supplied by your model’s documentation.
Using a DualSense or DualShock controller
What the official listing establishes
The Steam listing names both DualSense Controllers and DualShock Controllers, but places “USB Only” beside each family. That is the basis for using these pads on the cited release. It is not a blanket statement that every wireless configuration is supported, and it should not be read as a promise that Bluetooth will work merely because the controller can pair with another device.
A reliable USB setup
- Use a USB cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC and confirm that it powers on and is visible to the operating system.
- Start Steam and then launch the collection with the pad still connected.
- Open the in-game controller settings described in Konami’s online manual and test every essential control.
- If the game does not respond, try another known-good USB port and cable before changing software settings.
PlayStation-style symbols can remain familiar to your hands even when a PC game displays Xbox-style prompts. Read the glyphs shown on screen as the game presents them, and use the settings menu to verify which physical button performs each action rather than relying on the letter or symbol alone.
When this option makes sense
- You already own a DualSense or DualShock and do not mind being tethered by USB.
- You strongly prefer its stick placement, grip, or face-button arrangement.
- You want to avoid buying another pad and accept that wireless behavior is not established by the listing.
If none of those apply, an explicitly XInput controller is the simpler purchase because it aligns directly with Konami’s stated requirement.
Choosing a third-party PC controller
Third-party controllers can be sensible when a particular shape, size, accessibility feature, or price matters. The compatibility check is still model-specific. Before buying, find the manual or technical specification and look for an XInput mode that works on Windows. Prefer a controller that can remain in that mode consistently instead of one that silently changes between several standards.
Do not infer compatibility from a familiar shell shape, a console logo, a USB plug, or the word “gaming.” A USB connection describes the physical link; it does not by itself identify the input protocol. Conversely, a wireless controller may be technically XInput-capable while still requiring model-specific pairing or configuration that the official Steam listing does not evaluate.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Because no controlled measurements are available here, there is no evidence-based ranking of third-party pads for response time, battery duration, rumble strength, or durability. Those are separate purchasing questions. Establish XInput support first, then compare the features that matter to your own setup.

The game says a controller is required, but no input works
- Close the game, connect one controller, and launch again.
- Check that the controller is in its documented XInput mode if it is a third-party pad.
- Replace a charge-only USB cable with a known data cable when using a wired connection.
- Try another USB port and confirm the device responds in the operating system before reopening the game.
- Disconnect other gamepads temporarily so the intended device is unambiguous.
A DualSense or DualShock is not detected
Start with the listing’s “USB Only” qualification: use a direct USB data connection rather than assuming Bluetooth support. Reconnect the cable, test another port, and verify the pad is visible before launching. If it still fails, consult the controller’s documentation and Konami’s controller-settings instructions instead of treating wireless pairing as the expected path.
A third-party controller works in Windows but not in the game
“Works in Windows” does not prove that the game is receiving XInput. Recheck the exact model number and switch it to the manufacturer’s XInput mode. If the product has several modes, disconnect it, select XInput according to the manual, reconnect it, and test again with no other controller attached.
The prompts do not match the buttons you expect
First determine whether the mismatch is only the on-screen labeling or an actual incorrect assignment. Test each face button and trigger in the game’s controller settings. An Xbox-style prompt set can appear unfamiliar to a PlayStation-layout player; that is a layout-reading issue unless the physical actions are also wrong.
Controls change after switching connection methods
Switching between wired and wireless modes can cause the operating system or Steam to treat the device as a new input instance. Quit the game, reconnect using the method you intend to keep, and start the collection again. Recheck the bindings before resuming a long session.

Questions to ask before buying
- Is this for the Steam Master Collection release covered here? If not, verify the requirements for the other edition separately.
- Does the exact model expose XInput? Require an explicit answer in its documentation.
- Am I comfortable with Xbox-style prompts? If not, an existing PlayStation pad may be the better ergonomic choice.
- Can I play wired? For DualSense and DualShock, the official listing says USB-only.
- Do I already own a suitable controller? Test it before spending money on a replacement.
- Am I relying on a feature the official material does not establish? Treat wireless behavior, latency, battery life, vibration, and durability as model-specific rather than guaranteed by the game listing.
Recommended buying path
For a first-time PC buyer
Choose an Xbox-style controller whose documentation explicitly confirms XInput on Windows. Use it as the baseline setup for the Steam collection, and verify the controls once in the game’s settings.
For an existing DualSense owner
Keep the DualSense if you prefer its feel, but plan to connect it by USB. Test it with the collection before purchasing another controller.
For an existing DualShock 4 owner
Use the DualShock over USB if its condition and layout suit you. The official listing includes the family, with the same USB-only qualification.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a bargain or unusual-form-factor purchase
Do not choose on price or shape alone. Confirm XInput for the exact model, verify that the cable supports data if wired play is required, and retain a return option in case the controller exposes a different input standard.
Bottom line
For METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 on Steam, an explicitly XInput-capable Xbox-style controller is the safest general recommendation because Konami requires XInput and the Steam listing supports Xbox Controllers. DualSense and DualShock pads are valid alternatives for players who prefer their layout, provided they are used over USB as specified by the listing. Start with compatibility, then choose layout and connection method; do not assume that wireless support, performance, or durability is guaranteed without model-specific evidence.
