How to Choose a Safe Online Game for Kids to Play With Friends

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest choice is not a single game title. It is a game that fits your child’s age and maturity, runs on the platform their friends use, and gives you understandable controls for communication, privacy, reporting, play time, and spending. Check the ESRB rating and interactive elements first, create a child account, limit chat to known friends or turn it off, test the mute, block, and report tools, and supervise the first session.

ESRB ratings are a useful first filter, not a promise that every player or conversation will be safe. The Entertainment Software Rating Board reports that 83% of parents whose children play video games know about ESRB ratings and 77% regularly check them before buying a game. Community behavior still depends on the game, the platform settings, and the people your child meets.

What “safe online game” should mean for your family

Safety has several separate parts. A game can be age-appropriate but expose a child to open voice chat. Another can have strong communication controls but include content your child is not ready to see. Evaluate each part instead of treating a rating or a familiar brand as a complete safety decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Content fit: The game’s ESRB category, content descriptors, and interactive elements match your child’s age and maturity.
  • Communication privacy: Text and voice chat can be limited to approved friends or disabled.
  • Player controls: Your child can mute, block, and report another player quickly, and you know where those controls are.
  • Account privacy: The child uses a separate account with the correct birthdate and privacy settings.
  • Time and spending: You can schedule play, review activity, and require approval for purchases.
  • Practical compatibility: The game works on the same platform or cross-platform arrangement as the friends your child actually plays with.

These controls are useful only when a parent can find and understand them. A technically powerful setting that nobody checks is weaker than a simpler setting used consistently.

Start with your child and their friends

Assess age, maturity, and independence

Use the child’s real behavior, not only the number on a birthday certificate. Consider whether your child can follow a rule to leave a conversation, avoid sharing personal information, and tell you about an uncomfortable interaction. A child who can manage a private, supervised group may not be ready for public matchmaking or unrestricted voice chat.

Ask practical questions before choosing:

  • Can the child recognize a stranger, even when that person claims to be another child?
  • Will the child stop playing and get an adult when someone asks for a real name, school, location, password, photo, or live meeting?
  • Can the child handle losing, teasing, or an invitation from someone they do not know?
  • Will the child accept a no-chat rule when friends are using voice communication?

If the answer to any of these is no, choose a private friend group, disable voice chat, and stay nearby until the habit is established. Controls should support a conversation, not replace it.

Map the friends’ devices and accounts

Find out whether friends play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, a computer, a mobile device, or a mixture. A game may support cross-platform play while its parental controls remain separate on each service. Your child may be able to join friends only after an adult configures both the game account and the platform account.

Ask the other families what communication method they intend to use. In-game voice, platform messaging, a separate voice service, and a group text have different privacy and supervision settings. If you cannot supervise the proposed communication channel, use in-game text with known friends or choose a game that allows communication to be disabled.

Use ESRB information as the first filter

Read the rating and descriptors together

Check the ESRB rating, content descriptors, and interactive elements for the exact edition and platform you are considering. The rating helps identify themes such as violence, language, or simulated gambling; descriptors explain why the rating was assigned; interactive elements can flag user interaction, in-game purchases, or other online features.

Do not infer that a lower content rating guarantees a friendly community. ESRB ratings describe content supplied by the game, not the conduct of every player. A game with mild fictional content can still have inappropriate messages from another user, while a game with a stronger rating may offer communication settings that better fit your household. Review the rating information and then inspect the account controls.

Check the interactive elements before purchase

Interactive elements tell you to look beyond the software box or store page. Confirm whether the game includes online interaction, user-generated content, or purchases. If the listing does not make a feature clear, open the platform’s parental-control documentation and the game’s account settings before letting a child sign in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ratings are a decision aid, not a substitute for observing your child. Revisit the choice when the game adds a major online mode, changes its communication features, or your child’s maturity and friend group change.

Compare the controls you can actually use

The following comparison uses controls documented by the relevant platform or service. A feature listed as “supported” may still require setup in more than one menu, and the game’s own settings can add another layer.

Option Content and age controls Communication and privacy Time and activity Spending Important check
Nintendo Parental-controls app can restrict software by ESRB rating. App can restrict communication and control online features. Monitor play time and review downloads through the app. Control online features; exact purchase limits depend on the account setup. Confirm the child account and app are linked, then test the communication restriction.
PlayStation Family management supports child accounts and user-generated-content restrictions. Communication restrictions can be set for a child account. Play-time controls are available through family management. Spending limits are available. Use a separate child account rather than sharing an adult account.
Roblox Controls for content maturity and the ability to block games are available. Controls cover chat and connections; inspect each individual experience as well as account settings. Screen-time controls are available. Spending controls are available. Different experiences can present different content and social situations.
Cross-platform setup Use the rating controls on every platform involved. Restrict communication in the game and on each linked platform. Set schedules wherever the child can play. Require approval or limits on each account that can buy items. Choose the ecosystem a parent can supervise consistently.

The table shows why “Which game is safest?” has no universal answer. The best option is the one whose controls match your child and whose friends can join without bypassing your rules.

Set up a child account before the first match

Use this sequence for a new game or a new console. Menu names can change after updates, but the control categories remain recognizable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the ESRB information. Record the rating, descriptors, and interactive elements for the exact game and edition. Decide whether the content and online features fit your child.
  2. Create a separate child account. Enter the correct birthdate. Do not let a child use an adult account to avoid age-based settings; that can remove the protections you are trying to apply.
  3. Configure content limits. Set the highest permitted rating and restrict user-generated content or individual experiences where the platform provides that option.
  4. Configure communication. Start with communication off or limited to approved friends. If the game has both text and voice options, set each separately; allowing one does not automatically control the other.
  5. Configure time and activity. Set a schedule that matches school, sleep, and family routines. Turn on activity or play-time reports so you can see whether the setting reflects actual use.
  6. Configure spending. Set a spending limit or require an adult approval step for purchases. Check every account that can pay, including a platform wallet and a game-specific balance.
  7. Add only known friends. Use the child’s real-world friend list as the starting point. Explain that a familiar username, avatar, or shared game does not prove that someone is known.
  8. Demonstrate safety tools. With the child present, open the player menu and show mute, block, and report. Practice leaving a conversation and telling an adult.
  9. Supervise the first session. Stay close enough to hear or observe the interaction, confirm that the intended friends are present, and check the settings again after play.
  10. Recheck after changes. Review controls after a major game or platform update, when a new friend joins, or when the group begins using a different communication channel.

Control voice and text chat deliberately

Begin with the narrowest audience

For a first session, allow communication only with approved friends or disable it. Public lobby chat, open direct messages, and proximity voice can expose a child to people outside the friend group. If a game cannot provide an audience you can supervise, it may not fit your child even if the content rating does.

Voice chat deserves separate attention because it is harder to review afterward. A headset can make supervised conversation clearer, but hardware does not identify who is speaking or prevent contact from strangers. Treat the headset as an accessory to account controls, never as a replacement for them.

Teach a simple response to unwanted contact

Give the child a short routine: stop responding, mute the player, block the account, report the behavior, and tell an adult. The child does not need to investigate or argue. If a person asks for personal details, moves the conversation to another app, sends sexual or threatening material, or repeatedly returns with new accounts, end the session and preserve any available report information for the adult handling it.

Patricia E. Vance, president of ESRB, notes: “Most online games have a ‘Report Player’ tool that makes it relatively easy for your kids to block or mute another player, as well as alert the game developer to a bad actor in the community.” Show your child where that tool is before it is needed, because menus are harder to navigate during a stressful interaction.

Know the platform-specific controls

Nintendo

Nintendo says its parental-controls app can restrict communication and software by ESRB rating, monitor play time, review downloads, and control online features. Use the app to create a schedule and check what was downloaded, then open the game itself to verify that chat behavior matches the family rule.

For a friend group, decide whether communication should be available only through the game’s approved-friend system. If a child can still contact unknown players after you apply the restriction, check whether the game has a separate communication menu or a linked account with its own privacy controls.

PlayStation

PlayStation family management supports separate child accounts, communication restrictions, user-generated-content restrictions, play-time controls, and spending limits. Set these on the child account and keep the adult account credentials private. A shared adult account can defeat the age and spending boundaries you intended.

If a friend uses a different platform, check both the game’s cross-play settings and the communication permissions on the PlayStation account.

Roblox

Roblox provides controls for content maturity, chat and connections, screen time, spending, and blocking games. The account-level setting is only the starting point: inspect the specific experience your child wants to enter. Experiences can differ in content, social design, and the people a child encounters.

Ask your child to show you how to leave an experience, block a player, and report a problem. Review the connection list periodically and remove contacts the child no longer recognizes. If an experience requires a communication method you cannot supervise, choose a different experience or turn off that feature.

Cross-platform groups

Cross-play can solve a practical problem—friends owning different devices—but it can also create multiple account systems. Apply the same rule on every service: correct child account, approved friends, restricted chat, time schedule, and purchase approval. If one platform cannot enforce the family’s minimum rule, do not use that channel for the child’s online play.

Manage spending without surprises

Online games may sell cosmetic items, subscriptions, downloadable content, or other digital goods. The exact price and purchase flow vary by game and platform, so set a control rather than relying on memory or verbal promises.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Require adult approval for every purchase when the child is new to online buying.
  • Set a platform spending limit and check whether the game has a separate purchase balance.
  • Remove saved payment details from a child-facing account when practical.
  • Explain that virtual currency is still real money and that a “free” game can contain optional purchases.
  • Review receipts or account activity with the child so a purchase is never hidden by confusion about whose account paid.

Spending controls do not decide whether a game’s content or community is suitable. Treat money, communication, and content as separate checks that all need to pass.

Set play-time boundaries that work in real life

Use platform schedules and activity reports to support a family routine. A timer that ends a match abruptly can cause conflict, so give a warning before the scheduled stop and choose games with natural round breaks when possible. The platform setting remains the enforceable boundary; the warning is preparation.

Review activity after the first few sessions. If the child is playing outside the expected hours, check whether another device or account is being used. In a cross-platform household, a schedule on one console does not automatically cover a computer or mobile account.

Supervise, review, and respond

During the first session

Stay nearby and observe the lobby, friend list, communication, and the child’s reactions. You are checking whether the controls work as configured, not reading every message over the child’s shoulder. Intervene when a rule is tested, such as an unknown player sending an invitation or asking to move to another service.

After each early session

Ask open questions: Who did you play with? Did anyone ask for information? Did anyone make you uncomfortable? Could you find mute and block? Review the activity report and friend list together. Praise the child for reporting a problem even when the interaction seemed minor.

When something goes wrong

  1. End the interaction and move the child away from the conversation.
  2. Mute and block the account using the in-game or platform menu.
  3. Report the player or content through the game’s reporting tool.
  4. Save relevant usernames, timestamps, or screenshots if the platform makes them available and an adult needs to follow up.
  5. Tell the platform owner, school, or appropriate authority when the behavior includes threats, exploitation, or an attempt to arrange an offline meeting.
  6. Review how the contact occurred and tighten the audience, friend list, or communication setting before play resumes.

Do not ask a child to continue talking to a troubling player to collect evidence. Safety and separation come first.

A practical decision framework

Use this sequence when two or more games appear suitable:

  1. Eliminate content mismatches. Remove games whose rating, descriptors, or interactive elements exceed your child’s readiness.
  2. Eliminate communication mismatches. Remove games that cannot limit the audience to a level you are willing to supervise.
  3. Eliminate supervision mismatches. Remove games that require an account, device, or chat service you cannot monitor.
  4. Check the friend fit. Prefer the option the child’s known friends can join without creating a public lobby or an unapproved external chat.
  5. Check the family fit. Choose the game whose time and spending controls you can set, test, and revisit.
  6. Run a supervised trial. Treat the first session as a test of the whole setup, then keep the game only if the child can follow the safety routine.
Question Keep the game in consideration when… Choose another option when…
Content The ESRB rating and descriptors fit the child’s maturity. The child is likely to encounter themes they cannot process or discuss comfortably.
Communication Chat can be limited to known friends or disabled. Open voice or messaging is required for ordinary play.
Moderation Mute, block, and report are easy to find and test. The child cannot leave or report an interaction without adult intervention.
Time The platform provides a schedule or activity view you will use. The child can switch devices or accounts to bypass the only limit.
Spending Approval or a spending limit can be applied to every purchasing account. Payments are tied to an adult account the child can access freely.
Friends Known friends can join within the same supervised ecosystem. Joining friends requires an unmonitored service or public contact.

Common mistakes that undermine otherwise good controls

  • Using an adult account: It can bypass age, communication, and spending restrictions.
  • Assuming the rating covers the community: Ratings describe game content, not every user’s behavior.
  • Allowing voice chat by default: Voice is a separate exposure from text and may need its own setting.
  • Adding everyone from a lobby: A username or avatar is not proof of identity.
  • Setting controls once: Updates, new friends, and a second device can change the practical risk.
  • Relying on a headset: Hardware improves audio but does not provide privacy, moderation, or spending protection.
  • Skipping the practice run: A child who has never opened the report menu may not find it under pressure.
  • Ignoring the specific experience: On services with many user-created spaces, account settings do not describe every individual game.

When to revisit the choice

Review the setup after a major update, a change in the friend group, a new communication feature, or a move to another device. Also revisit it when your child asks to use an external chat service, begins receiving invitations from unknown players, or shows stress after playing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe online game is therefore a continuing family arrangement: suitable content, a controlled audience, visible moderation tools, enforceable time and spending limits, and friends who can join without bypassing those protections. If any one of those pieces cannot be maintained, select a different game or a more private way to play.
