How to Choose Age-Appropriate Video Games for Your Child

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Choose a game by combining the age category used in your country with every content descriptor and interactive-element notice, then judge the actual gameplay, online features, purchases, privacy, accessibility, and your child’s temperament. A rating is a useful starting point—not a guarantee that a game fits one particular child or your family’s schedule.

1. Start with the rating system used where you live

Age labels are easiest to misread when families apply the wrong regional system. In North America, look for the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). In Europe and the United Kingdom, use PEGI, the Video Standards Council (VSC), or the applicable national classification system. A rating category is only the first layer of information; the details printed beside it explain why the game received that category.

How ESRB information is organized

ESRB presents three parts:

  1. Rating category: the broad age guidance, such as E (Everyone), E10+ (Everyone 10 and older), T (Teen), M (Mature 17+), or AO (Adults Only 18+).
  2. Content descriptors: specific material that influenced the rating, such as violence, fear, language, sexual content, substances, crude humor, or gambling-like activity.
  3. Interactive elements: notices about features such as in-game purchases, user interaction, and location or personal-data sharing when those features are disclosed.

ESRB describes ratings as information that helps parents make informed choices, not as a substitute for family judgment. Its 2023 survey found that 84% of parents with children who play video games were aware of the system, and 73% said they used ratings regularly—“every time” or “most of the time”—when deciding which games were appropriate. In 2024, 65% of ESRB ratings assigned to physical and console-downloadable games were E or E10+; that statistic describes the market, not a promise that every E or E10+ title suits every child.

PEGI, VSC and national labels

European and UK labels may use different age numbers, symbols, and descriptor wording from ESRB. Read the explanation attached to the exact edition sold in your country. A PEGI 12 label is not a direct conversion of an ESRB E10+ label, because each system uses its own criteria and legal framework. If a game is imported, released on a different platform, or updated with new online features, check the current local product listing rather than relying on a screenshot or an older box.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Read every descriptor, not just the age number

The descriptor is the fastest way to identify a potential deal-breaker. Before buying or downloading, open the game’s rating page or store listing and record every descriptor shown.

Content that may matter to your family

  • Violence: consider whether it is cartoon, stylized, realistic, prolonged, directed at human characters, or directed at vulnerable characters.
  • Fear and horror: look for jump scares, threatening sounds, pursuit, disturbing imagery, or sustained suspense. A game with little violence can still be overwhelming for a child who is sensitive to fear.
  • Language: note whether the issue is mild insults, profanity, slurs, or repeated dialogue.
  • Sexual content: check for sexual references, suggestive clothing, romance, nudity, or explicit acts.
  • Substances: identify alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or fictional substances and how they are portrayed.
  • Gambling-like elements: chance-based rewards, casino themes, betting mechanics, or simulated gambling can be important even when no real-money wager is required.
  • Crude humor and mature themes: toilet humor may be harmless for one child while death, grief, crime, or social conflict may be the more significant concern for another.

Interactive-element notices

Interactive notices describe risks that do not fit neatly into a story-content label:

  • In-game purchases: check whether the game sells cosmetic items, expansions, currency, subscriptions, randomized items, or boosts.
  • User interaction: multiplayer may expose a child to text chat, voice chat, direct messages, usernames, or user-created content.
  • Location or personal-data sharing: review what information can be collected or shared and whether the feature can be disabled.

A game can have an age category that looks suitable while its open chat, spending mechanics, or data practices are a poor fit. Treat those notices as separate decisions.

3. Find out what the game actually feels like

Labels cannot show the full tone, pace, difficulty, or social pressure of play. Parents in ESRB’s 2023 survey most often reported using several checks: playing the game themselves, checking the rating, checking the genre, researching online, and talking with other parents.

A practical pre-purchase check

  1. Watch representative gameplay: choose an unedited video that shows ordinary play, not only a trailer. Check the first hour if possible, because tutorials can be gentler than later sections.
  2. Use a demo or trial: a short hands-on session reveals controls, reading load, camera movement, sound intensity, and how often the child must wait or repeat a task.
  3. Read several current descriptions: look for details about difficulty settings, accessibility, online requirements, and the frequency of combat or scares.
  4. Supervise the first session: sit nearby, observe reactions, and ask what the child understands. Notice whether the game rewards calm exploration or constant speed and pressure.
  5. Check the exact edition: downloadable updates, expansions, regional versions, and platform differences can change available chat, purchases, or content.

Do not infer suitability from genre alone. A “sports” game can include aggressive voice chat and expensive player packs; a “puzzle” game can use timed pressure, frightening imagery, or recurring purchase prompts.

4. Match the game to the child, not just the number

Two children of the same age can respond very differently to the same game. Make an individual decision using the child’s development, temperament, skills, and your family’s priorities.

Questions to ask about readiness

  • Emotional sensitivity: How does the child respond to danger, loss, monsters, conflict, or realistic sounds? Can they describe what upset them and ask to stop?
  • Reading and comprehension: Can the child follow instructions, menus, subtitles, and story choices without an adult translating every step?
  • Frustration tolerance: What happens after a failed attempt, lost progress, or a difficult boss? Can the child pause and recover rather than throw a controller or continue in distress?
  • Attention and self-regulation: Can the child stop when asked, switch to homework or meals, and leave a game that uses endless rounds or rewards?
  • Motor and sensory needs: Are buttons, camera controls, text size, color contrast, motion effects, audio levels, and timing demands manageable?
  • Social judgment: Can the child recognize manipulation, refuse a request for personal information, block someone, and tell an adult about an uncomfortable interaction?
  • Family values: Does the game’s treatment of competition, humor, relationships, money, or conflict align with what you want to reinforce?

This individualized approach follows the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasis on a media plan based on age, health, temperament, developmental stage, and family circumstances. A game may fit its official label and still be a poor personal match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Treat online play as a separate permission

Online access changes the decision even when the single-player content is acceptable. Decide which social features are necessary and which are optional before the child starts.

Questions about communication

  • Is voice chat required, or can the child play with it disabled?
  • Can the account accept messages only from approved friends?
  • Are text chat, team chat, direct messages, friend requests, and user-created content controlled separately?
  • Can the child identify the mute, block, report, and leave-session commands?
  • What personal information is visible through the profile, username, screenshots, livestreams, or linked accounts?

Use the first supervised session to demonstrate how to mute and block another player. Tell the child that they will not be punished for reporting harassment, sexual messages, threats, requests for images, or pressure to move a conversation to another service. Keep an adult’s account recovery information current so a compromised account can be secured quickly.

When online play is not worth the trade-off

Disable multiplayer when a game cannot provide the level of communication control your child needs, when moderation is unclear, or when the social pressure consistently produces distress. A child can enjoy the same title offline, in local co-op, or with a small group of known friends.

6. Control purchases, chance-based rewards and privacy

Purchasing and data collection deserve their own family rules. A child who understands a rating may still not understand that virtual currency costs real money or that a “limited-time” offer is designed to create urgency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Purchase safeguards

  • Use a child account rather than sharing an adult account.
  • Require an adult password or approval for every purchase.
  • Remove saved payment details where practical.
  • Set a spending limit and a clear rule for subscriptions, downloadable content, virtual currency, and randomized rewards.
  • Explain that chance-based items are not a way to earn money and that repeated purchases can add up even when each one is small.
  • Review receipts and account history regularly.

Privacy safeguards

  • Provide only the information needed to create the account.
  • Use the most restrictive profile visibility and friend-request settings that still allow the game to work.
  • Turn off location sharing unless there is a specific, understood reason to keep it on.
  • Review permissions after major updates and when linking a new account or device.
  • Teach the child never to share a real name, school, address, phone number, password, live location, or private image with another player.

7. Use age-band prompts, then personalize them

ESRB’s family guidance offers useful prompts by age. They are not developmental diagnoses or automatic permissions; combine them with the individual checks above.

Child’s age Starting point What to review
Under 5 Prefer education-oriented games designed for the child’s age, with an adult nearby. Keep play supervised, set a clear stopping point, and watch for confusing controls, rapid motion, or frightening sounds.
5–9 Create an individual child account. Set age filters, time schedules, communication limits, and purchase controls before play begins.
10–12 Expect gaming to become more social. Review the current rating and descriptors, monitor who can communicate, and keep purchase controls active.
13–16 Increase freedom gradually as maturity is demonstrated. Talk openly about which games are played, with whom, and how the child handles conflict, chat, and spending.
16 and up Allow more independent decisions while staying involved. Continue conversations about content, privacy, purchases, and online interactions rather than removing all oversight.

8. Build a family media plan around the whole day

There is no independent universal number of “safe gaming hours” that fits every child. The AAP says children and teenagers need adequate sleep, physical activity, and time away from media, and recommends a personalized Family Media Use Plan.

Protect non-screen priorities first

  • Sleep: AAP-cited guidance says children and teens generally need 8–12 hours of sleep depending on age. Keep games from displacing bedtime or making it difficult to wind down.
  • Movement: Plan for about one hour of physical activity daily, adjusted to the child’s health and circumstances.
  • School and responsibilities: Decide when homework, chores, meals, and preparation for the next day are complete.
  • Relationships: Preserve time for family conversation, friends outside the game, and activities that do not require a device.
  • Offline recovery: Include breaks between sessions, especially after competitive or frightening play.

Instead of promising a fixed daily allowance, set conditions that can be observed: the child sleeps adequately, attends school, moves regularly, completes responsibilities, maintains relationships, and can stop without a crisis. Change the plan when those conditions change.

9. Set parental controls before handing over the device

Names and menus vary by console, computer, phone, and game, but the control categories are consistent. Configure them on the child’s account, then test them with the child present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create or select a child account: avoid giving a child unrestricted access to an adult profile.
  2. Set the age filter: choose the local rating system and the highest category you have approved.
  3. Set play schedules: specify allowed hours and automatic downtime that protects sleep and school routines.
  4. Restrict communication: choose who may send friend requests, messages, voice chat, or invitations. Disable user-generated content when it is not needed.
  5. Require purchase approval: turn on password or adult approval and set a spending limit if the platform offers one.
  6. Review privacy options: limit profile visibility, location sharing, data collection, and linked-account access.
  7. Enable safety tools: show the child how to mute, block, report, and leave a session.
  8. Test the settings: attempt a restricted purchase, message, or game from a separate account so you know the controls actually work.
  9. Record recovery details: keep the adult email, two-factor authentication, and recovery codes secure and current.

Controls support a conversation; they do not replace one. Explain what each limit protects and tell the child how to request a change as they mature.

10. Compare two games with the same checklist

When two titles appear similar, compare the factors that ratings alone do not settle.

Comparison point What to record Why it can change the decision
Regional age category ESRB, PEGI, VSC, or the applicable national label for the exact edition Categories are not interchangeable across regions.
Descriptors Violence, fear, language, sexual content, substances, gambling-like elements, crude humor, and other listed themes A single descriptor may conflict with your child’s sensitivities or family rules.
Pace and difficulty Speed, time pressure, repetition, checkpoints, difficulty options, and pause behavior Frustration and overstimulation can matter more than the story premise.
Online interaction Voice and text chat, direct messages, user-created content, moderation, blocking, and reporting Social exposure is a separate risk from offline content.
Privacy Profile visibility, location access, data sharing, and linked accounts Personal information may be exposed even in a child-friendly game.
Monetization Up-front price, subscriptions, downloadable content, virtual currency, randomized rewards, and approval controls Spending pressure can continue after the initial purchase.
Accessibility Subtitle size, remapping, color options, narration, motion controls, difficulty aids, and audio settings A technically age-appropriate game may be unusable without the right options.
Co-play Local co-op, private rooms, family participation, and offline mode Shared play can reduce exposure to unknown players and help adults monitor the experience.
Effect on routines Session length, endless rounds, event timers, and whether play displaces sleep, movement, schoolwork, or relationships A good content match can still be a poor schedule match.

11. Watch for signs that the choice needs changing

Review the game or the rules if you notice a sustained change rather than a single bad day.

  • The child repeatedly cannot stop when the agreed session ends.
  • Sleep, schoolwork, meals, exercise, or friendships are being displaced.
  • The child becomes unusually anxious, aggressive, secretive, or distressed after playing.
  • Chat produces insults, sexual messages, threats, requests for personal information, or pressure to spend money.
  • Purchases occur without permission or the child hides spending attempts.
  • The child avoids telling you what happened because they fear losing access.
  • Accessibility barriers cause pain, fatigue, headaches, or repeated failure unrelated to the intended challenge.

A recovery sequence

  1. Pause the game or disable the specific feature causing harm.
  2. Listen without blaming the child; preserve screenshots, receipts, or usernames if a report may be needed.
  3. Use the platform’s block, report, refund, privacy, and account-security tools.
  4. Adjust the rating filter, schedule, communication permissions, or purchase approval rather than relying on a verbal reminder alone.
  5. Reassess whether the game should return, move to offline play, or be replaced.

The Australian eSafety Commissioner summarizes a useful principle: “Take small steps – Find the next appropriate step that offers the most benefit with the least risk.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Revisit the decision as your child develops

Ratings, game updates, friendships, devices, and children all change. Recheck the product page when an expansion or major update adds multiplayer, chat, purchases, or new content. Revisit the family plan when the child changes school stages, gains a new device, begins playing with unfamiliar people, or demonstrates reliable self-regulation.

Increase independence gradually: let a child who consistently follows the rules choose from a wider approved range, explain why a setting changed, and review the result together. Keep the conversation open about content, privacy, spending, and how to leave an uncomfortable interaction. The goal is not to find a magic age number; it is to make a deliberate match between the game, the child, and the rest of family life.
