How to Choose an Indie Game That Will Run Well on Your PC

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Choose an indie game only after matching its complete store-page requirements with your PC’s exact CPU, graphics processor and VRAM, installed RAM, operating system, display resolution and free storage. Treat the minimum specification as a launch floor, not a performance promise; the recommended specification is the safer target for image quality and consistent frame pacing.

A game that opens can still stutter, drop frames or fail to support your operating system. The reliable method is to identify your weakest major component, set a realistic frame-rate and resolution goal, verify platform compatibility, then test a demanding section while watching frame-time, GPU, CPU, RAM and VRAM use.

What “runs well” should mean

“Playable” is not a single technical result. One player may accept 30 frames per second (FPS) at 720p, while another expects a steady 60 FPS at 1080p. Decide your target before comparing specifications.

  • Launches: The game starts and reaches gameplay, but this says nothing about smoothness.
  • Playable: Input is responsive and performance does not regularly interrupt the experience.
  • Runs well: Frame times remain consistent at your chosen resolution and visual settings, including in busy scenes.

Official minimum and recommended requirements rarely guarantee a particular FPS. Results vary with resolution, graphics settings, drivers, patches, background software, shader compilation and the complexity of the current scene. Use the requirements as evidence for a decision, not as a benchmark.

1. Make an exact inventory of your PC

Write down the full model name for every relevant part. “Intel graphics,” “Core i5” or “8 GB RAM” is too vague: different generations and integrated GPUs can perform very differently.

Component Record Why it affects the decision
Processor (CPU) Exact model and generation Controls game simulation, AI, physics and draw-call preparation. A CPU limit can cause stutter even when the GPU is underused.
Graphics processor (GPU) Exact model; note whether it is integrated or dedicated Usually determines rendering capacity. Compare integrated GPUs with integrated GPUs and dedicated cards with dedicated cards.
Video memory (VRAM) Dedicated VRAM amount, or the shared-memory arrangement of an integrated GPU Texture and resolution settings can fill VRAM before the graphics core reaches its limit.
System memory Installed RAM and, if possible, available RAM while the game is running The game, operating system and background applications share it. Exhaustion can cause paging and severe hitching.
Operating system Windows, macOS, Linux or SteamOS, including version and 64-bit status A game may list requirements for one operating-system family only. Compatibility layers add another dependency.
Display Native resolution and intended refresh rate 1080p/60 requires more rendering headroom than 720p/30.
Storage Free space on the drive where the game will be installed The listed space may not include room for updates, shader caches or the operating system.

Where to find the information

On Windows, open Settings > System > About for the CPU and installed RAM. Open Task Manager > Performance to identify the GPU and its dedicated memory. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool, opened by typing dxdiag in the Run dialog, can provide another model-name check.

On macOS, choose Apple menu > About This Mac and expand the system report when you need the precise graphics model and memory arrangement. On Linux, desktop system information panels vary; commands such as lscpu, free -h and lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D|Display" expose the CPU, RAM and display adapter. Confirm the result against the driver utility so that you do not mistake a software renderer for the actual GPU.

Do not overlook laptop power modes

A laptop may have both integrated and dedicated graphics. Running on battery, a quiet power profile or an incorrect per-game GPU assignment can make a capable machine look underpowered. For a fair comparison, check which adapter the game is using and test while connected to the intended power source.

2. Read the entire store-page requirements section

Steam’s support guidance is to inspect a game’s hardware requirements together with its compatible operating systems on the store page. Do not stop after reading the first line labelled “minimum.” Capture every field and every note.

Listing detail What to compare Questions it answers
Minimum CPU Your exact processor family and generation Can the game’s simulation run at all, and is there enough CPU headroom for background tasks?
Minimum and recommended GPU Model class, not just a brand or series name Will the renderer support the expected effects at your target resolution?
VRAM or graphics-memory note Dedicated memory versus shared system memory Can textures and frame buffers fit without constant swapping?
RAM Installed RAM minus what the operating system and other applications consume Will the game compete with browsers, launchers, recording tools or mods?
Operating-system support Windows, macOS, Linux or SteamOS icons and version notes Is there a native build, or will you need a compatibility layer?
Storage Required capacity and your free space Can you install it and still leave room for updates and caches?
Graphics API DirectX, Vulkan, Metal or another stated API Does your operating system and driver expose the required rendering path?
Additional notes 64-bit requirement, controller support, internet access, shader compilation or other caveats Are there non-performance requirements that could prevent a usable setup?

If the listing provides separate Windows, macOS or Linux requirements, compare against the row for the operating system you will actually use. A computer can satisfy the Windows specification and still lack a supported macOS or Linux path.

3. Find the bottleneck instead of counting passes

Passing three categories does not cancel out a failure in the fourth. Treat the weakest major component as the decision gate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison result Decision
Every major component exceeds the recommended target Good headroom for the listed resolution and settings, although patches, drivers and demanding scenes can still change results.
CPU and RAM meet the target, but GPU or VRAM is below minimum Assume the game is a poor fit unless you are willing to reduce resolution and effects and accept an uncertain result.
GPU meets the target, but CPU is below minimum Expect simulation-related stutter, low minimum FPS or trouble in crowded scenes; lowering visual settings may not solve it.
Requirements are met, but available RAM is low Close background applications and check whether the system is paging. Installed RAM alone does not show how much the game can use.
Only an integrated GPU is available while the listing assumes a dedicated card Do not infer equivalence from a shared model name. Verify integrated-graphics reports or choose a game whose requirements explicitly fit that class.
Your operating system or API is unsupported Do not treat hardware parity as compatibility. Find a supported native build or evaluate the compatibility-layer path separately.

Compare like with like: a dedicated GPU requirement is not automatically satisfied by an integrated GPU with the same amount of shared memory, and a current CPU model is not interchangeable with an older model merely because both have the same marketing tier.

4. Set a frame-rate and resolution target

Write the target beside your inventory: for example, “30 FPS at 720p” or “60 FPS at 1080p.” This prevents a misleading pass/fail decision.

  • 30 FPS target: A reasonable fallback for slower hardware or visually demanding 3D scenes, provided frame times are stable.
  • 60 FPS target: Requires substantially more headroom, especially at 1080p, and exposes CPU spikes that may be hidden by a 30-FPS cap.
  • Fixed resolution: If a monitor’s native resolution matters to you, compare at that resolution rather than assuming you can always scale down.
  • “Playable” target: Define an acceptable compromise, such as a lower preset or a frame-rate cap, before buying.

Recommended requirements are the safer starting point for image quality and frame pacing, but they still do not promise a fixed FPS. A minimum specification is best interpreted as the level at which the developer expects the game to launch under stated conditions.

5. Check Windows, macOS, Linux and SteamOS separately

Platform support is a separate question from raw hardware. Read the store’s supported-platform icons and notes for the edition you plan to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows

Confirm the listed Windows version, 64-bit requirement and graphics API. Keep the GPU driver current enough for the game’s renderer, but remember that a driver update can also change shader compilation or frame pacing; retest after major updates.

macOS

Check both the macOS version and the listed graphics hardware. A game that supports macOS may still target only certain Apple or Intel GPU families, and a Windows requirement cannot be applied directly.

Linux and SteamOS

Linux play may use a native build or Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. Valve’s Proton documentation notes that suitable graphics drivers are required and that newer titles may need newer driver support. Verify the driver stack, the Proton version used by the game and reports from hardware close to yours. A Windows requirement table is not, by itself, a guarantee for Proton.

Steam Deck adds another layer: Steam’s compatibility information identifies which Verified requirements are unmet and can suggest lowering a graphics preset or individual settings. Treat that status as a configuration guide, not a promise that every scene will hold a particular frame rate.

6. Use evidence beyond the requirement table

Requirements are written before every future patch and driver combination can be known. Reduce uncertainty with evidence that matches your setup.

Read recent developer notes

Look for patch notes mentioning performance, shader compilation, memory leaks, crashes, graphics APIs or support for a specific operating system. A recent fix may make an older report irrelevant; a new content update may increase load.

Filter community reports carefully

Prioritize reports that name the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system, resolution, preset and game version. “Runs great” without those details is a clue, not a guarantee. Discard reports from hardware classes that differ from yours, and note their date because drivers and patches change results.

Prefer frame-time evidence

An average FPS number can hide regular hitching. Look for minimums, frame-time graphs or descriptions of traversal and combat areas. Consistent delivery is more useful than a high average that contains frequent pauses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Test early and conservatively

If the store’s refund policy makes a test eligible, install the game and check it before investing hours. Policies and eligibility windows vary, so confirm the current terms for your purchase rather than assuming every test qualifies.

  1. Install on the drive with adequate free space and close unnecessary background applications.
  2. Choose your intended resolution and a conservative preset. Disable optional overlays or recording tools for the first comparison.
  3. Load a representative save or the most demanding area you can reach quickly. A quiet tutorial scene is not a useful stress test.
  4. Play long enough to encounter traversal, combat, effects and menu transitions. Watch for shader-compilation stutter as well as sustained low FPS.
  5. Record frame-time consistency and the CPU, GPU, system-RAM and VRAM readings. Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same section.
  6. Keep a known-good configuration so that an experimental launch option or preset can be removed without guessing what changed.

What to monitor after launch

Steam’s in-game performance monitor can display frame performance, CPU use, GPU use, system-memory use and video-memory use. Use it to identify the active limit rather than lowering every setting at once.

What you observe Likely limit First changes to test
GPU utilization remains near saturation and frame time rises with resolution Rendering workload Lower resolution or render scale, then reduce shadows, anti-aliasing and expensive effects.
VRAM is full and texture changes cause hitching or visible asset swaps Video-memory capacity Lower texture quality, texture filtering or resolution; close GPU-heavy background applications.
One or more CPU threads spike while GPU utilization falls, especially in crowds or simulations CPU or game-thread limit Reduce simulation-heavy settings, cap the frame rate and close background processes.
System RAM is exhausted and storage activity increases during play Memory pressure or a possible leak Close browsers and launchers, restart the game and check whether usage grows over time.
Average FPS looks high but frame-time graphs show repeated spikes Frame-pacing, shader compilation, background tasks or asset streaming Repeat the same route after shaders settle, reduce streaming-heavy settings and investigate recent patches or drivers.

Confirm each change by repeating the same demanding section. If lowering resolution barely changes performance while CPU frame time remains high, the GPU was not the bottleneck; further visual reductions will have little effect.

Settings that provide the fastest fallback

When performance is poor, start with changes that directly reduce the measured workload.

  1. Lower resolution or render scale. This is the quickest test for a saturated GPU.
  2. Reduce shadows and volumetric or post-processing effects. These can be disproportionately expensive in 3D scenes.
  3. Lower anti-aliasing. Test whether edge smoothing is consuming GPU headroom.
  4. Lower textures when VRAM is full. Texture quality often affects memory more than core rendering speed.
  5. Cap the frame rate. A stable cap can smooth frame pacing when the system cannot sustain a higher target.
  6. Reduce simulation-heavy options. Use this when CPU frame time or crowd and physics scenes are the problem.

Steam documents launch options that can alter settings before a game starts, including options useful for older graphics hardware and alternate rendering paths. Use the game’s Library > Properties > General > Launch Options field only when the developer or Steam documentation identifies a valid option for that title. Change one variable at a time, record the original value and remove an option that causes instability.

How to compare two indie games for the same PC

Use the same target resolution, FPS goal and operating system for both games. A simple “low-end” label is not meaningful without those conditions.

Comparison axis How to judge it Why it matters
Requirement headroom Measure how far your CPU, GPU, VRAM and RAM exceed each game’s recommended targets. The game with more headroom is less sensitive to background tasks, patches and demanding scenes.
Rendering burden Compare the listed GPU requirements and whether the game uses dense 3D environments, heavy effects or mostly 2D scenes. 2D or low-resolution 3D often demands less GPU work, but the official requirements remain the deciding evidence.
Resolution and FPS target Evaluate both games at the same 720p/30, 1080p/60 or other target. A game that is comfortable at 720p/30 may not be suitable for 1080p/60.
Platform path Note native Windows, macOS or Linux support versus Proton translation and driver dependence. Native support removes compatibility variables; Proton requires a suitable driver and version.
Patch and support history Check the recency of performance fixes and developer notes. Active maintenance can reduce uncertainty, while old unresolved reports deserve caution.
Observed frame-time stability Repeat the same demanding section and compare frame-time consistency, not only average FPS. Smoother delivery usually feels better than a higher average with frequent stutters.

Why a lighter-looking game can still be demanding

Visual style is not a specification. A stylized or pixel-art game may use complex lighting, simulation, procedural generation or high-resolution effects. Conversely, a detailed-looking game may scale well on modest hardware. Use appearance as a hypothesis, then verify the listing and measurements.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Relying on a generic “low-end PC” label: Replace it with exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM and operating-system data.
  • Checking only CPU and RAM: Compare the GPU and VRAM separately; either can be the limiting component.
  • Treating minimum as recommended: Use minimum as a launch floor and recommended as the safer performance target.
  • Testing only the opening scene: Load a demanding area with combat, crowds, effects or streaming.
  • Changing many settings at once: Adjust one variable, repeat the same section and keep a known-good preset.
  • Ignoring drivers and patches: Record the game version and driver context when reading reports or diagnosing a change.
  • Assuming Windows results transfer to Linux or SteamOS: Check Proton, graphics-driver and compatibility information separately.
  • Watching average FPS only: Inspect frame-time consistency and identify whether CPU, GPU, VRAM or RAM is saturated.

A decision checklist before you buy

  1. Have I recorded the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system, display resolution and free storage?
  2. Did I read every minimum and recommended field, including API, 64-bit, controller, internet and shader notes?
  3. Does my weakest major component meet the relevant target?
  4. What resolution and FPS do I actually want: 30, 60 or another limit?
  5. Is my platform supported natively, or will Proton and driver compatibility be involved?
  6. Did I check recent patch notes and reports from hardware close to mine?
  7. Can I test a demanding section under the store’s current refund terms?
  8. Do I know which setting to lower first for a GPU, VRAM, CPU or RAM bottleneck?

If any answer is unknown, the purchase remains a guess. Resolve that specific unknown instead of relying on a broad “indie games run on old PCs” assumption.
