Choose an indie Soulslike by deciding which activity you want to master: precise parries, constant attack pressure, build experimentation, getting lost in a world, or making every checkpoint run count. “Soulslike” does not guarantee one specific rhythm. Stamina rules, defensive timing, respec costs, map structure, and respawn behavior can make two games with the same label feel unrelated.
Use the four filters below in order: combat feel, build flexibility, exploration structure, and checkpoint rules. Then check platform availability. The examples are system profiles rather than a universal ranking.

Start with the preference that matters most
Before looking at screenshots or difficulty claims, finish this sentence: “I will enjoy the game if it lets me…”
- …stay on the offensive. Look for attack-powered systems, low resource friction, and defensive moves that flow into counters.
- …learn a precise defensive rhythm. Prioritize deflection or parry-focused combat where timing is the main skill test.
- …change my character repeatedly. Check whether weapons, armor, cards, spells, or abilities alter encounter solutions and whether respec is affordable.
- …discover a place. Decide whether you want physical traversal, interconnected shortcuts, optional side areas, or tightly authored 2D routes.
- …make each attempt meaningful. Study what a checkpoint restores, which enemies return, how long the run-back is, and whether resting creates a useful risk decision.
This preference test is more predictive than a generic “easy versus hard” label. Difficulty is produced by the interaction of timing, resources, route length, and repetition.

1. Read the combat system in verbs and timing
Ask what you do during a normal encounter. Do you spend stamina on every swing and dodge? Is a parry optional or the central answer to attacks? Can blocking, dodging, or deflecting immediately create an opening? How much recovery does an attack commit you to? How quickly does the game teach the timing it expects?
Stamina and attack commitment
Stamina creates a deliberate budget: attacking, sprinting, and evading compete for the same resource, so an aggressive sequence can leave you unable to escape. A stamina-free system removes that particular limit but may replace it with positioning, enemy pressure, cooldowns, or timing requirements. Neither approach is automatically better; choose whether you enjoy resource counting or uninterrupted movement.
Defensive actions that become offense
A dodge that only avoids damage produces a retreat-and-reset loop. A parry or deflection that staggers an enemy, fills a meter, or enables a counter turns defense into an attack decision. If you like reading enemy animations and answering at the exact impact frame, prioritize games where that conversion is central rather than a niche technique.

- AI Limit: Producer Yang Bin describes a Sync Rate system in which attacking accumulates energy for higher attack power, spells, and weapon skills. Attacks and dodges do not consume stamina, and defensive actions can be converted into counterattacks. The result favors sustained pressure: you are encouraged to keep engaging instead of waiting for a stamina bar to refill. It suits players who want aggression to build momentum.
- Sands of Aura: Xbox Wire describes a fast, reactive loop combining attacks, dodges, blocks, parries, and spellblade abilities. It is the broadest defensive-to-offensive toolkit among these examples, making it a fit if you want several answers to the same attack and prefer switching responses as a fight develops.
- Nine Sols: Red Candle Games says its goal was to recreate deflection-focused Sekiro combat in 2D while combining it with side-scrolling exploration. Expect the combat question to be “Can I deflect this sequence?” rather than “Which stamina-efficient hit should I take?” Choose it if deliberate parry practice is the attraction.
Do not infer the learning curve from the word “Soulslike.” A game that removes stamina can still demand strict timing, while a stamina-based game can offer generous defensive options. Look for footage of ordinary enemies, not only bosses, and count how often the intended loop asks you to attack, evade, block, or deflect.
2. Judge build variety by decisions, not item counts
A large inventory is not the same as meaningful build variety. A useful build system changes how you solve encounters: range versus close pressure, status effects versus direct damage, heavy commitment versus mobility, or resource generation versus burst attacks. The practical questions are whether equipment changes those decisions, how restrictive upgrade materials are, and how safely you can reverse a choice.

Breadth versus flexibility
Breadth is the number of weapons, armor pieces, spells, cards, and abilities available. Flexibility is how easily you can test them. A game with fewer options but cheap respecs may support more real experimentation than a game with hundreds of items that permanently punish an early investment.
Sands of Aura: equipment-led experimentation
The developer says weapons, armor, and talismans meaningfully alter a character’s approach and describes “hundreds of viable builds and playstyles.” Programmer John Sadler explained: “We wanted to give players enormous flexibility to create wildly different, deeply customizable builds that synergize in unexpected and sometimes absurdly powerful ways.” Balance changes were also aimed at reducing friction between committing to a build and trying another one. This is the clearest choice for players who want equipment decisions to remain fluid rather than locking into one identity.

AI Limit: weapon identity with unlimited resets
Each AI Limit weapon has different features and skills. Yang Bin says reset items obtained early and in the mid-game let players redistribute ability points without limiting the number of uses. That rule matters more than the raw number of attributes: you can test a weapon or spell plan, abandon it, and rebuild without treating the first character as disposable. The game still asks you to learn each weapon’s behavior, but experimentation is structurally supported.
Death Howl: deck construction instead of equipment menus
Death Howl replaces traditional weapons and spells with cards. Build identity therefore comes from deck construction and material collection, not from selecting a conventional sword, armor set, or spellbook. This can appeal to players who enjoy assembling synergies and planning a turn before acting. It is a poor match if your idea of build variety is physically changing weapons during a real-time melee exchange.
When comparing any other indie Soulslike, inspect the respec rule before counting its loot. Find out when the first reset becomes available, whether resets are unlimited or consumable, whether upgrade materials can be recovered, and whether a new loadout requires replaying earlier areas to become viable.

3. Identify what “exploration” means in the game
Exploration is not one feature. It can mean sailing between physical locations, decoding an interconnected maze of shortcuts, returning to earlier rooms with a new ability, following optional quest branches, or finding the correct route through a 2D map. Choose the structure you enjoy before comparing map size.

Physical traversal and discovery
Sands of Aura divides its world between islands and a sandsea. The developer chose physical sailing instead of a simple location-select map so distance and hidden discoveries become part of the adventure. A compass assists orientation without providing a full minimap. That design is for players who want travel itself to carry meaning and who accept that navigation may require attention.
Linear route with optional depth
AI Limit’s main story is linear, but side quests and areas unlocked by exploring later levels create additional routes and rewards. Main-path players can move through a directed campaign; completionists can revisit the structure and uncover content that is not presented as a completely open world. This distinction is useful if you want authored pacing with optional detours rather than unrestricted wandering.
Open-world traversal with turn-based battles
Death Howl combines open-world exploration with turn-based grid battles. Its Sacred Groves are checkpoint locations embedded in that world, so movement and battle preparation are connected: finding the next grove is part of progressing through the landscape, while the combat itself changes from real-time reactions to positional planning.
Side-scrolling route-finding
Nine Sols combines 2D deflection combat with classic side-scrolling exploration. Its discovery challenge is therefore about reading routes, platforms, gates, and returns through a authored horizontal space rather than navigating a three-dimensional wilderness. Pick this structure if you prefer compact, legible paths and the satisfaction of mastering a route.

To compare exploration fairly, ask four questions: Is travel mandatory or rewarding in itself? Are shortcuts earned through risk? Do later abilities reopen earlier areas? Are side quests substantial enough to change the route you take? A larger map is not automatically a richer one if most movement is menu selection or empty distance.
4. Treat checkpoints as a rule set, not a save icon
A checkpoint determines the cost of learning. Examine five rules before deciding whether a game’s repetition will feel motivating or exhausting:
- What does resting restore? Health, healing charges, ammunition, energy, or only your position?
- Which enemies respawn? Full enemy groups, selected guards, or no regular foes?
- How close is the next meaningful encounter? Measure the run from the checkpoint to the boss, elite, or puzzle that killed you.
- Does the checkpoint open a shortcut? A shortcut can convert a long replay into a focused rematch.
- Does resting create a trade-off? If healing also repopulates enemies, you must decide whether safety is worth resetting the route.
Death Howl: healing has a visible cost
Game director Malte Burup says Death Howl’s Sacred Groves “allow you to heal, but they also respawn all enemies.” The checkpoint is therefore a risk decision, not a neutral menu. Rest before a difficult battle and you regain survivability, but the path is repopulated; continue without resting and you preserve your cleared route while carrying more danger.
AI Limit: fiction and restart rule align
In AI Limit, characters respawn through Branches after death. The restart mechanic is tied to the game’s fiction, which can make repeated attempts feel like part of the world rather than an unexplained reload. The reviewed material does not establish a selectable difficulty setting, so players should not assume one is available.

Sands of Aura’s compass, described by Xbox Wire, reduces disorientation without replacing exploration with a full minimap. When a game asks you to travel through large spaces, orientation tools affect checkpoint friction: getting lost can add more repetition than enemy difficulty does. Distinguish intentional route learning from time spent simply searching for the next island.

A short run-back can make failure productive because each attempt returns you quickly to the lesson. A long run-back can become a travel tax that hides whether your combat strategy is improving. Checkpoint spacing should therefore be judged together with healing and respawn behavior, never in isolation.

A practical selection process
- Choose your combat verb. Select pressure and meter-building for AI Limit, a broad reactive toolkit for Sands of Aura, precise deflection for Nine Sols, or turn-based grid decisions for Death Howl.
- Set your experimentation requirement. If you routinely restart characters, favor AI Limit’s unlimited ability-point resets or Sands of Aura’s stated effort to reduce build friction. If you enjoy a single evolving identity, a stricter system may be preferable.
- Choose your map shape. Pick physical sailing and environmental discovery, a linear path with optional later areas, open-world traversal, or 2D side-scrolling routes.
- Define your repetition tolerance. Decide whether enemy respawns are acceptable when they restore healing, and estimate how much run-back you are willing to repeat after a failed boss attempt.
- Verify the platform you actually use. Confirm the edition and storefront before buying; launch dates and platform availability differ by game.
- Watch a normal gameplay segment. Look for a regular enemy encounter and a checkpoint transition. Boss trailers hide stamina costs, route length, and the frequency of ordinary fights.
Platform and release details that can break a good match
The examples span current console and PC ecosystems, but the evidence is not uniform. Xbox Wire reported a Sands of Aura launch on Xbox Series X|S for March 26, 2026. PlayStation Blog’s February 16, 2026 announcement placed Death Howl’s PS5 release on February 19, 2026. AI Limit is covered as available on PS5 and PC through Steam. The reviewed material does not establish platform details for Nine Sols, so check its current store listing before planning a purchase.

Bottom line: match the system to your preferred rhythm
Choose AI Limit if you want stamina-free movement, attack-powered growth, counterattacking defense, and the freedom to redistribute ability points repeatedly. Choose Sands of Aura if you want the widest combination of real-time attack and defense options, equipment-driven build changes, and exploration built around physical distance. Choose Nine Sols if mastering deflection in a 2D world is the main attraction and you prefer authored side-scrolling routes. Choose Death Howl if you want to exchange real-time melee for card-built, turn-based grid battles inside an open world where healing deliberately repopulates enemies.
The best indie Soulslike is the one whose repetition teaches the skill you actually want to practice. Compare the verbs, the build rules, the map structure, and the checkpoint trade-off before you compare difficulty labels.
