For most players, Forza Horizon 5 is the best all-round road-trip choice: it combines relaxed solo exploration of Mexico with optional co-op and organized online events. Choose The Crew 2 if you want an America-inspired playground with cars, bikes, boats, planes, and an offline mode; The Crew Motorfest if a scenic Hawaiian setting and crew activities are the priority; BeamNG.drive if you want a solo physics laboratory; or Euro Truck Simulator 2 if the journey should feel like a realistic, long-haul job.

The important distinction is that “road trip” describes several different activities. You might mean scenic cruising, jumping between events with friends, experimenting with vehicle behavior, or hauling freight across a detailed road network. The right game depends on that activity, not simply on the size of its map.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The short answer

  • Best balance of solo cruising and multiplayer: Forza Horizon 5. Its Mexico open world supports unstructured driving, while Horizon Tour co-op and Horizon Open provide organized races, drift events, games, and The Eliminator.
  • Best for a broad, America-inspired playground and mixed vehicles: The Crew 2. It combines cars, bikes, boats, and planes, weekly challenges, multiplayer modes, and an offline way to play.
  • Best for a scenic island road trip with a group: The Crew Motorfest. Its Hawaii setting includes Honolulu street races, volcano off-road routes, tracks, thematic campaigns, and competitive live events.
  • Best for solo experimentation and crash physics: BeamNG.drive. It is a physics sandbox with mods and offline multiseat play, not a dependable online road-trip game.
  • Best for patient, realistic long-haul travel: Euro Truck Simulator 2. Its vast road system, brake-wear detail, and map expansions make logistics and distance the main activity.

Before buying, confirm the current platform listing, edition, online-service requirements, regional availability, and price. Live-service vehicle counts and online features can change.

How to evaluate a road-trip driving game

Use six questions rather than a single “best game” ranking.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

1. How much unscripted solo driving does the map support?

A road-trip game should let you leave the event menu and simply travel. Look for an open environment that makes sightseeing, route choice, and wandering worthwhile. A huge map is not automatically better: a broad world with little reason to cross it may feel less like a journey than a smaller setting with distinctive destinations.

2. What does multiplayer actually mean?

“Multiplayer” may refer to co-operative driving, shared free-roam, competitive events, or only local/offline seats. Forza Horizon 5 emphasizes organized online activities. The Crew 2 combines multiplayer with an offline mode. BeamNG.drive’s official FAQ says online multiplayer was never part of its originally promised features, although offline multiseat is documented. Do not assume that a game with an open map lets a friend join the same trip.

3. What geography do you want to inhabit?

The choices here cover Mexico, an America-inspired world, Hawaii, and simulated European road networks. Geography changes the emotional rhythm of a drive: an island setting encourages scenic loops, while a logistics simulator makes distance and route planning the point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. How should the vehicles feel?

Arcade handling makes it easy to explore and recover from mistakes. Physics-focused handling rewards experimentation and exposes vehicle behavior. Long-haul simulation adds operational details such as brake wear. Decide whether you want immediate fun, mechanical learning, or professional-style routine.

5. Are variety and progression part of the fantasy?

Some games encourage event hopping across many vehicle types; others focus on understanding a smaller set of vehicles or completing freight jobs. Consider whether you want cars only, mixed motorsport machines, or trucks and their associated logistics.

6. Does the purchase fit your platform and service needs?

Platform support, online access, regional inventory, edition contents, and service status are time-sensitive. Check the store page for every player in your group instead of relying on an old compatibility list.

Comparison of the five leading choices

Game Solo cruising Multiplayer mode Map setting Handling style Vehicle focus and progression Purchase check
Forza Horizon 5 Very strong: open-world exploration in Mexico supports free driving between activities. Horizon Tour co-op; Horizon Open events include races, drift, games, and The Eliminator. Open-world landscapes of Mexico. Accessible arcade-oriented driving. Vendor describes “hundreds of the world’s greatest cars”; progression is built around events and activities. Verify current platform, edition, online access, and regional listing.
The Crew 2 Very strong if you want a broad America-inspired playground and freedom to switch activities. Multiplayer modes and weekly challenges; an offline way to play is now available. “An entire open world America,” in Ubisoft’s description. Accessible, mixed-vehicle action rather than strict simulation. Cars, bikes, boats, and planes; progression spans multiple motorsport types. Check which features work offline or require service access in your edition and region.
The Crew Motorfest Strong for scenic loops and activity-based exploration on an island setting. Crew activities, competitive live events, thematic campaigns, and other group activities. Hawaiian open world, including Honolulu and volcano routes. Arcade-style driving designed for varied events. Ubisoft’s 2026 page reports over 800 vehicle models from more than 50 manufacturers; the live count can change. Collection Import can bring selections from The Crew 2. Re-check the current vehicle count, platform support, service requirements, and edition contents.
BeamNG.drive Excellent for sandbox testing, mods, crashes, and studying vehicle behavior. No promised online multiplayer; official FAQ documents multiseat as offline multiplayer. Sandbox environments rather than a single road-trip destination. Detailed vehicle physics and deformation. Vehicle behavior and experimentation are the progression; mods expand scenarios. Confirm the current PC/platform listing and whether your intended setup supports the required offline seats.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 Excellent for deliberate, distance-focused journeys. The cited product information does not establish every current convoy, cross-platform, or service requirement; verify them before buying for a group. Vast European road system with map DLCs. Realistic truck simulation, including details such as brake wear. Trucks, freight, routes, and logistics provide the structure. Check the base game and each map DLC, plus current convoy and platform requirements.

Forza Horizon 5: the safest all-round recommendation

Choose Forza Horizon 5 when your group cannot agree on one driving mood. Its official description centers on the open-world landscapes of Mexico, so a solo player can explore without treating every minute as a race. That makes it a practical “meet up and drive” game: one player can roam, another can enter an event, and the group can return to free exploration afterward.

Easy Delivery Co. - Nintendo Switch
  • Earn a "living" by delivering packages with your kei truck. Take in the atmospheric scenery or blitz through (road safety not required).
  • Buy drastically overpriced gas and get to know the locals.
  • Simple controls and retro graphics. Listen to cool beats while driving
  • Nothing strange going on, no lore, nothing at all, we promise.
  • Languages - English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (LATAM), Portuguese (Brazil), and Traditional Chinese.

Why it works for solo road trips

The open world is the main attraction rather than a lobby surrounding a narrow event list. You can use the map as a destination in itself, then opt into activities when you want a defined objective. The vendor currently describes “hundreds of the world’s greatest cars.” Treat that as promotional wording, not as a dated, precise car count; the number and roster can change.

What friends can do together

Horizon Tour supplies co-operative events. Horizon Open adds organized online competition and variety through races, drift, games, and The Eliminator. This is a good fit when your group wants both low-pressure cruising and clear activities with a beginning and end.

Who should choose another game

Pick something else if your ideal trip is truck logistics, vehicle-damage experimentation, or a setting built around boats and planes. Also verify the current platform and online requirements for every member of the group before purchasing.

The Crew 2: a broad America-inspired playground

The Crew 2 is the choice for players who value breadth over simulation. Ubisoft describes “a huge playground built within an entire open world America,” designed for cars, bikes, boats, and planes. That mixed-vehicle scope changes the meaning of a road trip: you can treat the world as a connected motorsport playground rather than a single type of road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the map and vehicle mix matter

If your group gets bored doing the same kind of driving, The Crew 2 can vary the activity without changing games. Cars support road travel, while bikes, boats, and planes create different ways to cross or experience the world. The America-inspired setting supplies the geographic fantasy; it is not presented as a one-to-one simulation of every real route.

Multiplayer and offline flexibility

The official page highlights weekly challenges and multiplayer modes. The game now also offers an offline way to play, which is valuable for solo sessions or situations where service access is limited. “Offline” does not automatically mean that every online event or feature is available without a connection, so check the current mode descriptions for your edition.

Best fit

Choose The Crew 2 when your priority order is map breadth, vehicle variety, and a flexible mix of solo and group play. Choose Forza Horizon 5 instead if you want the clearest balance of casual exploration and organized co-op events in a car-focused open world.

  • BATTERY POWERED - Take your console with you wherever you go, with no need for cables. Simply insert 2 AA batteries and you're ready for hours of gaming!

The Crew Motorfest: scenic Hawaii and crew activities

The Crew Motorfest is built around a more concentrated destination. Ubisoft’s official page invites players to “EXPLORE A VIBRANT HAWAIIAN OPEN WORLD WITH YOUR CREW.” That identity is useful when the fantasy of the trip matters as much as the number of roads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you can do on the island

The setting supports street races in Honolulu, off-road driving on a volcano, tracks, thematic campaigns, and competitive live events. These activities give a group reasons to change route and vehicle instead of circling one familiar area. The island geography also makes a scenic loop easier to imagine than an abstract collection of disconnected courses.

Vehicle scale and Collection Import

Ubisoft’s page accessed in 2026 reports over 800 vehicle models from more than 50 manufacturers. That is a live-service figure, so re-check the current page at purchase time; it may change. Collection Import can bring selections from The Crew 2, which may reduce the feeling that an existing collection has to be rebuilt from zero.

Best fit

Choose Motorfest when your group wants a lively island setting, themed activities, and a large roster. It is less suitable if your definition of a road trip is a quiet, realistic freight run or a laboratory for crash behavior.

BeamNG.drive: the solo physics sandbox

BeamNG.drive serves a different need from the open-world festival games. Its appeal is experimentation: how a vehicle behaves, deforms, and responds when conditions change. Mods and sandbox setups can turn driving into a series of tests, stunts, and discoveries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the online limitation

BeamNG’s official FAQ states: “Online multiplayer is a common request, and we are keeping an eye on it, but has never been part of the originally promised features.” The same FAQ documents multiseat as offline multiplayer. Therefore, do not buy it expecting a reliable online convoy with friends. If everyone is sharing one local setup, multiseat may be relevant; if each person needs to join remotely, select a game with an explicitly supported online mode.

Current development context

The game page is actively updated through version 0.39 in July 2026, with earlier updates listed by month and year. That shows continuing development, but it does not change the multiplayer qualification above.

  • Boost your progression faster than your friends by earning double Speed Points for your first four hours of multiplayer.
  • Unlock the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale and Porsche 911 Carrera S for early use in multiplayer

Best fit

Pick BeamNG.drive for solo vehicle behavior, crash physics, mods, and controlled experiments. It is the strongest option here for asking “what happens if I try this?” rather than “where should our group drive tonight?”

Euro Truck Simulator 2: make the journey the job

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is the most deliberate road-trip option. SCS Software describes a vast road system, detailed features such as brake wear, and map DLCs. The activity is not simply reaching a scenic viewpoint; it is managing a truck, a route, and the distance between destinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it feels different

Brake wear and similar operational details make small decisions meaningful. A long route becomes a sequence of practical choices rather than a backdrop for repeated sprints. Map DLCs can extend the road network, but each expansion should be treated as a separate purchase and compatibility check.

Multiplayer caution

The cited product information does not establish every current convoy, cross-platform, or service requirement. If a shared trip is the reason you are buying, verify those details on the current platform listings and official support information before paying. Do not infer support from the existence of a large road network.

Best fit

Choose Euro Truck Simulator 2 when patience, logistics, and realistic distance are more important than instant acceleration or a large collection of sports cars.

Choose by the trip you actually want to take

“We want to meet online and just drive”

Start with Forza Horizon 5. Its open Mexico world supports free exploration, and Horizon Tour provides a defined co-op activity when the group wants structure. The Crew Motorfest is the alternative if the Hawaii setting and themed crew activities are more appealing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“We want events, not only cruising”

Forza Horizon 5 offers the clearest range of organized online formats in this group: co-op through Horizon Tour and Horizon Open activities covering races, drift, games, and The Eliminator. Motorfest emphasizes campaigns and competitive live events. Pick based on whether you prefer a broad event menu or an island-focused festival structure.

“We want to switch between cars, boats, planes, and bikes”

Choose The Crew 2. Its official description explicitly covers all four vehicle categories and frames the world as an America-inspired playground for different motorsport types.

“I mostly play alone and want to test vehicles”

Choose BeamNG.drive. Its physics, deformation, mods, and offline multiseat option are more relevant than online event design. Do not treat its open environments as a substitute for a supported online road trip.

“I want a realistic trip that takes time”

Choose Euro Truck Simulator 2. Brake wear, freight-oriented structure, and a vast road system make distance itself the reward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Our group has very different skill levels”

Favor an accessible arcade game, especially Forza Horizon 5 or one of The Crew games. They let players participate in varied activities without requiring everyone to master detailed truck operation or vehicle physics first.

Arcade, physics, and simulation: the handling decision

Handling preference What it feels like Best match Trade-off
Accessible arcade Quick learning, easy recovery from mistakes, and frequent event changes. Forza Horizon 5; The Crew 2; The Crew Motorfest. Less emphasis on mechanical realism and operational detail.
Physics sandbox Vehicle behavior, impacts, and experiments are the content. BeamNG.drive. Online road-trip support is not promised.
Long-haul simulation Distance, route management, vehicle upkeep, and steady progress. Euro Truck Simulator 2. Slower pace and a narrower vehicle fantasy than mixed-motorsport games.

Do not judge these styles by the same standard. An arcade game is not failing because it is forgiving, and a simulator is not failing because it is slower. Each is optimized for a different definition of fun.

Multiplayer checklist before you buy

  1. Name the exact activity. Decide whether you need shared free-roam, co-op events, competitive races, local multiseat, or a convoy-style simulation.
  2. Check the official mode description. Forza Horizon 5 explicitly lists Horizon Tour co-op and Horizon Open activities. The Crew 2 lists multiplayer modes and an offline way to play. BeamNG.drive’s FAQ does not promise online multiplayer.
  3. Match every player’s platform and edition. Do not assume cross-platform or cross-edition play; confirm it on the current store and support pages.
  4. Check service dependence. Offline availability in The Crew 2 does not mean every live event works offline. Live-service counts and features in Motorfest can change.
  5. Confirm regional purchase terms. Price, inventory, edition names, and online requirements can differ by country and date.
  6. Plan for connection and voice chat separately. A game can support shared driving while your group still needs an independent voice-chat method and a stable connection.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistaking map size for road-trip quality

A large map is useful only if the journey itself is enjoyable. The Crew 2’s America-inspired scale suits players who want breadth and vehicle switching; Euro Truck Simulator 2’s road network suits players who want distance and logistics. Choose the travel activity first.

Assuming “multiplayer” means online cruising

Read the mode names. Co-op events, competitive playlists, offline multiseat, and remote free-roam are different features. BeamNG.drive is the clearest warning: its official FAQ describes online multiplayer as a common request, not a promised feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating live counts as permanent specifications

Motorfest’s over-800-model figure is tied to Ubisoft’s 2026 page and can change. Forza Horizon 5’s “hundreds” wording should remain a qualitative vendor description unless a dated source supplies an exact count.

Buying a simulator for a group that wants instant action

Euro Truck Simulator 2 rewards patience and route management. If your friends want immediate races, varied short activities, or forgiving handling, an arcade-oriented choice is more likely to keep the group together.

Ignoring offline needs

If internet access is unreliable, The Crew 2’s offline option is a meaningful differentiator. Still check which specific activities remain available without service access and whether the current edition has changed.

A practical decision tree

  1. Is remote online group play essential? If yes, start with Forza Horizon 5, The Crew 2, or The Crew Motorfest and verify the current service requirements. If no, BeamNG.drive and Euro Truck Simulator 2 remain viable.
  2. Do you want arcade accessibility? If yes, choose among the Forza and The Crew games. If no, continue to the next question.
  3. Is vehicle experimentation the main activity? Choose BeamNG.drive.
  4. Is realistic distance and freight management the main activity? Choose Euro Truck Simulator 2.
  5. For arcade games, which setting wins? Mexico for the most balanced car-focused option, an America-inspired world for mixed vehicles and breadth, or Hawaii for a concentrated scenic festival setting.

Final buying checklist

  • Write down whether your priority is scenic cruising, co-op events, competition, mixed vehicles, physics experimentation, or long-haul logistics.
  • Compare the five games on solo freedom, multiplayer type, geography, handling, vehicles, and progression—not on map size alone.
  • For a group purchase, verify every player’s platform, edition, region, online access, and required service.
  • Re-check live-service information, especially Motorfest’s vehicle count and current event availability.
  • If your requirement is online convoy play, do not substitute BeamNG.drive’s offline multiseat feature for a promised online mode.
