Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose by the activity you want to repeat, not by how large the map is. If you want to build, follow a story, solve environmental puzzles, take on demanding combat, or manage survival risks, those preferences point to very different open-world games—even when all promise freedom to explore.
Start with the loop you want to play
Before comparing maps or review scores, ask what you would enjoy doing for most of a session. One player’s “tons to do” is another player’s busywork: exploration can mean gathering materials, following story leads, solving puzzles, fighting, or making your own projects.
- Build and invent: Choose a game that makes creation a central activity.
- Explore and master combat: Look for route freedom alongside an honest account of difficulty and failure.
- Follow a story: Prioritize authored characters, missions, and side stories over self-directed goals.
- Solve and experiment: Seek environmental puzzles and tools that let you devise different solutions.
- Manage risk: Look for resource pressure and decisions about when an expedition is worth taking.
That first answer is more useful than “I want a big open world.”

Match challenge and guidance to your tolerance
If you want freedom without a fixed objective
Minecraft is explicit about having “no set goal,” and its modes make that openness concrete. Creative gives you unlimited resources and flight for building; Survival asks you to explore, gather resources, craft, fight, and manage hunger and health. Decide which mode you want before treating “Minecraft” as one uniform experience. The official guide explains both modes.
If you want options but also want difficult fights
Elden Ring offers choices in routes, weapons, magic, and skills, but freedom does not make its combat gentle. Bandai Namco describes a style built on timing and evasion, with difficult boss encounters. If you hit a wall, you can sometimes explore elsewhere, return later, look for helpful items, summon spirits, or cooperate with other players. The flexibility is in how you approach the challenge—not a guarantee that the challenge will be low. Bandai Namco’s official page and its Elden Ring explainer describe those options.
Rank #2
If you want a world to inhabit around an authored story
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a stronger fit when story, side stories, and the feel of a detailed Western simulation are the draw. That description comes from GameSpot’s editorial comparison, not a publisher specification. If you would rather set your own project than follow authored story content, a story-forward game may feel less open in practice even if its world is explorable.
Check whether survival pressure sounds engaging
Resource systems can make exploration feel purposeful—or turn a relaxing outing into chores. Minecraft Survival adds gathering, crafting, hunger, health, and hostile encounters, while Creative removes much of that pressure. State of Decay 2, as GameSpot describes it, makes community-building and the decision to risk a resource run central to play. Red Dead Redemption 2 is characterized there as a story-rich simulation with needs. Treat these as different kinds of pressure, not interchangeable “survival” labels.
Rank #3
- Choose lower-pressure creation if you mainly want to experiment and build.
- Choose risk-and-resource decisions if planning expeditions is part of the appeal.
- Choose a story-rich simulation if you want world detail and narrative to share the focus.
Verify platform and edition before you buy
Platform support and edition compatibility can change, and a game’s name alone does not tell you whether your device or version is included.
- Check the platform listing for your region. Minecraft’s official guide lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One and Series consoles, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and selected mobile and other devices; availability can depend on device and market. Check Minecraft’s guide.
- For Minecraft on PC, check Java versus Bedrock. The official overview says the unified launcher can switch between Java and Bedrock on PC, and explains that cross-play differs by edition and platform. Do not assume every edition can play together. Read Minecraft’s edition overview.
- For Elden Ring, confirm the exact platform and edition. Bandai Namco’s official page links PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam and identifies a physical edition; check the current listing for your region before purchasing. See the official Elden Ring page.
- For the other examples, confirm with the current store or publisher listing. The GameSpot comparison cited here does not establish their current platform or edition availability.
Use a quick fit check before choosing
- Can you name the activity you want to repeat—building, combat, story, puzzles, or resource management?
- Do you want a clear authored direction, or are you comfortable inventing your own goals?
- Are difficult fights part of the appeal, or would you rather avoid combat pressure?
- Will hunger, crafting, simulation needs, or risky supply runs add satisfying stakes—or interrupt the kind of exploration you want?
- Have you verified the platform, edition, and cross-play details that matter for your device and friends?
A Reddit player described wanting to “freely explore” with “tons to do” and a “comfy, green, beautiful” feel. That phrasing can help clarify a personal preference, but it is one player’s request, not evidence that a particular game will suit everyone. Read the May 9, 2025 discussion.
