Choose by play loop, not by tier list: decide whether you want to spend more time with your team, deal damage directly, heal or mitigate damage, and how much coordination the hero asks of you. For the announced Sombra and Roadhog reworks, treat the descriptions below as design direction rather than a guarantee of how the live heroes currently play; verify the current patch before choosing.
Start with the role and the time you want to spend with your team
Ask first whether you want to act independently or contribute through a team-facing role. That distinction is especially important for Sombra: in a September 17, 2026 interview, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller described her direction as moving from Damage to Support while keeping stealth and shifting her toward healing allies and spending more time with her team. This is an announced direction, not a claim about her current live implementation.

Consider the Sombra direction if you want stealth with more team support
Sombra may appeal if you enjoy stealth and occasional independent plays but also want to contribute through healing and remain connected to teammates more often. Keller said: “She still keeps her identity, she can still stealth. She can still hack people’s abilities, but only by ulting now.” The quote describes the announced direction; check the live game and patch notes for the version currently available. Use Lifeweaver as a support comparison
If you prefer a support routine centered on healing and distinctive utility, Lifeweaver is a useful comparison. Blizzard described him as a support who spends much of his time healing, with low-aim healing and transformational abilities. His distinctive utility can involve more decisions, and his controls may take adjustment. Choose based on whether those trade-offs fit you, rather than assuming every Support hero asks for the same mechanics or coordination. Blizzard’s Lifeweaver retrospective.

Compare Roadhog by how you want to create close-range pressure
Ask whether you enjoy close-range threat and hook-based engagements. Keller described Roadhog’s announced direction as adding an ability to absorb incoming damage and adjusting primary-fire cadence to make one-shot kills harder, giving hooked targets more time to react. He said: “We’ve also reduced the ability to get his one-shots off.” If you prefer a tank whose impact does not hinge as much on that sequence, the described direction may be less appealing; if you like the hook-based close-range loop, it may still be worth trying. These are design observations, not a balance ranking or a description of exact current ability behavior. Source: Xbox Wire interview transcript, September 17, 2026.

Check the patch before treating a preview as current advice
Hero kits and tuning can change over time and by mode. Blizzard’s April 2026 live patch notes included Roadhog and Ramattra adjustments; July 2026 notes listed further Roadhog tuning, including Chain Hook cooldown and perk changes. Those dated changes are not timeless recommendations, and they do not establish the latest October 2026 balance state. What the rework announcements do—and do not—establish
In April 2026, Blizzard named Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog as an early shortlist for later-year reworks, while noting that the shortlist could change. That was a planning signal, not confirmation that every named hero received a rework. The September interview subsequently described announced directions for Sombra and Roadhog, but those descriptions alone do not establish exact live implementation, current balance, comparative win rates, or which hero will suit every player. No numeric performance comparison is established here, so choose by role and play loop rather than an unsupported ranking. Blizzard Director’s Take and official patch notes.
