To run PS5 games from added storage, install a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe Key M SSD in the console’s internal expansion bay. Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read speed, requires cooling, and limits the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly to 110 × 25 × 11.25mm. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. For a PS5 or PS4 external drive, use SuperSpeed USB storage between 250GB and 8TB: PS4 games can run from it, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back before they can launch.
Start with the console and the way you play
“SSD expansion” means two different things on PlayStation. A PS5 has an internal M.2 slot plus USB extended storage. The internal slot is the only added-storage path that lets you download, update and launch PS5 games directly. USB storage is useful for keeping a PS5 library nearby, but a PS5 game on that drive has to be copied to the console’s internal storage or its M.2 SSD before play.

PS4’s documented expansion path is USB extended storage. A compatible USB drive can hold and run PS4 applications, so there is no PS5-style internal M.2 installation requirement for the PS4 expansion decision.

| Use case | Best route | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Play PS5 games directly from added storage | Internal PS5 M.2 NVMe SSD | Download, update and play PS5 games from the M.2 volume |
| Archive PS5 games and avoid repeated downloads | External SuperSpeed USB SSD or HDD | Store and move games; copy each PS5 game back to console or M.2 storage to play |
| Play PS4 games from expanded storage | External SuperSpeed USB drive | Install, move and play PS4 applications directly from USB storage |
| Add capacity to a PS4 | External SuperSpeed USB drive | Use the drive as extended storage for PS4 applications |
This distinction prevents the most common buying mistake: selecting a large external SSD expecting it to behave like an internal PS5 expansion drive.

Requirements for an internal PS5 SSD
Sony’s compatibility specification is cumulative. A drive that misses any one of the interface, speed, size or cooling requirements may not be accepted, even if its capacity looks suitable.
Interface and protocol
- Use an M.2 NVMe SSD with a PCIe Gen4x4 interface.
- The connector must be Key M.
- Sony explicitly states: “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.” An M.2 shape alone does not identify a compatible drive; SATA and NVMe are different protocols.
Capacity
The supported internal M.2 range is 250GB to 8TB. The usable space shown by the console will be lower than the number printed on the package because formatting and system overhead consume part of the raw capacity.
Read speed
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster. Treat this as a selection filter rather than a promise of a particular in-game frame rate. Sequential figures are manufacturer specifications measured under stated test conditions; game loading also depends on software and the console.
Supported physical formats
The SSD must use one of the supported M.2 lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110. Length is only one part of the fit check, because the heatsink and thermal sheet count toward the final envelope.
Check the complete heatsink dimensions
Cooling hardware is required for the PS5 M.2 installation. Sony limits the entire assembly—SSD, heatsink and heat-transfer sheet included—to a maximum of 110mm long, 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick. Compare those figures with the assembled product, not the bare circuit board.
Built-in versus separate cooling
- Built-in heatsink: A drive sold as a PS5-ready assembly can simplify installation because the manufacturer has already paired the cooler with the SSD. You still need to confirm the published assembled dimensions.
- Separate heatsink: This can work when the cooler is designed for the exact M.2 length and remains inside Sony’s limits. Account for the thickness of every thermal pad and the top and bottom of the cooler.
- No heatsink: Do not install an uncooled M.2 module in the PS5 expansion bay. Cooling is part of the compatibility requirement, not an optional performance accessory.
Double-sided memory chips can affect clearance even when the nominal length and width look correct. If a manufacturer lists separate bare-drive and heatsink measurements, add them as an assembled unit and use the larger value for each dimension. When a specification is unclear, choose another model rather than guessing.
Choose capacity from your installed library
Sony defines a supported range, not a universal “right” size. Capacity should reflect how many large games you keep installed, whether your internet connection makes redownloading inconvenient, and how often you rotate titles.
| Capacity | Practical fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | A smaller active library or players who regularly uninstall finished games | Lower purchase cost, but free space can disappear quickly after system overhead |
| 2TB | A general-purpose PS5 expansion for a mixed library | More headroom for large installs without the price of the largest capacities |
| 4TB | Players who keep many large games installed or share the console | Higher cost; verify that the specific 4TB model still meets the speed and size rules |
| 8TB | The largest capacity within Sony’s stated internal and USB ranges | Highest cost and potentially less value if your library is small |
Do not infer compatibility from capacity. A 2TB drive can still fail the PS5 check if it is SATA, slower than Sony’s recommended read speed, or too thick after its heatsink is fitted.
External USB storage: PS5 and PS4 rules
Sony’s USB extended-storage guidance covers drives from 250GB through 8TB. The drive must use SuperSpeed USB rated at 5Gbps or faster. A USB SSD generally offers quicker copying than a mechanical hard drive, while an HDD can provide more capacity for less money; both are governed by the same console behavior for game placement.

| Console and content | Can remain on USB? | Can launch directly? |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 game on USB extended storage | Yes | No; copy it to console storage or the internal M.2 SSD first |
| PS4 game on USB extended storage connected to PS5 | Yes | Yes, when the drive is compatible and properly formatted |
| PS4 game on USB extended storage connected to PS4 | Yes | Yes |
USB storage is therefore a good archive and transfer shelf for PS5 games, not a substitute for the internal M.2 bay when immediate PS5 launching matters. Keep the USB drive connected if you want the console to recognize its installed PS4 library without moving files back and forth.
Cost, convenience and capacity trade-offs
The internal M.2 route costs more effort because you must verify several specifications, fit a cooler, open the console and format the drive. Its benefit is direct PS5 play from the added volume. An external drive is a simpler plug-in choice for archiving PS5 games or running PS4 games, but it adds a copy-back step for every PS5 title.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no single “best value” capacity. A 1TB model may cost less initially but require more uninstalling and reinstalling. A 2TB model is a practical general-purpose search target, while 4TB or 8TB makes sense only when the installed library justifies the additional purchase cost. Compare current regional prices for the exact capacity and cooled configuration; a faster headline number or licensed branding does not remove Sony’s fit requirements.
For external storage, an SSD normally shortens copying compared with a mechanical HDD, whereas an HDD can offer more capacity for less money. Choose based on whether transfer time, portability and noise matter more than capacity per unit of cost. Neither type changes the rule that PS5 games cannot launch directly from USB extended storage.
Read a product listing line by line
Before ordering an internal drive, confirm that the listing identifies all of the following for the exact capacity, not merely for a product family:
- PCIe 4.0 or Gen4x4 and NVMe, rather than SATA.
- Key M connector and one of the supported 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 lengths.
- Sequential read rating of at least 5,500MB/s.
- Capacity from 250GB to 8TB.
- A heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, or a clearly specified compatible cooler.
- Finished length, width and thickness no greater than 110 × 25 × 11.25mm.
Do not use a retailer’s “gaming” or “PS5 compatible” label as a substitute for these numbers. If the page gives only bare-drive dimensions, locate the manufacturer’s assembled measurements. If the 1TB and 2TB versions have different speeds, controllers or dimensions, evaluate the version you actually intend to buy.
Selection workflow
- Identify the console. A PS5 can use an internal M.2 SSD or USB extended storage. Sony’s documented PS4 expansion route is USB extended storage.
- Decide where games must run. If PS5 games need to launch from the added volume, rule out USB and shop for an internal M.2 NVMe drive. If you only need an archive, USB is simpler.
- Filter internal candidates. Confirm PCIe Gen4x4, NVMe, Key M, a supported 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110 size, 250GB–8TB capacity and a manufacturer-rated sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s.
- Verify cooling. Select a heatsink-equipped assembly or add a compatible heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Check the finished dimensions against 110 × 25 × 11.25mm.
- Match capacity to your library. Use 1TB for a modest rotation, 2TB as a practical general-purpose target, and 4TB or 8TB when you deliberately keep a much larger collection installed.
- Update system software. Install the latest available PS5 system software before opening the expansion bay. Current software guidance and console-model instructions can change, so check PlayStation Support for your specific model.
- Plan the data move. Formatting an M.2 SSD erases data on that SSD. Back up anything stored on it before connecting it to the console.
Installing and formatting an internal PS5 M.2 drive
Use the installation instructions for your PS5 model; the cover and expansion-bay access point differ between hardware revisions. Work on a stable surface, disconnect power, allow the console to cool and avoid touching the SSD contacts.
- Shut down the PS5 completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, then disconnect the power and cables.
- Remove the console cover according to Sony’s model-specific instructions and open the M.2 expansion-bay cover.
- Remove the spacer and screw from the slot position that matches the SSD’s length.
- Insert the M.2 module at an angle into the Key M connector, lower it flat and secure it with the spacer and screw. Do not force the connector.
- Fit the heatsink and heat-transfer sheet if they were not installed as a single assembly. Recheck that the completed unit does not exceed 110mm × 25mm × 11.25mm.
- Close the bay and reinstall the console cover before reconnecting cables.
- Start the PS5. When the format prompt appears, choose the option to format the M.2 SSD. Formatting deletes all data on that drive.
- After formatting, open the storage settings to confirm the capacity. Set the M.2 location as the default installation destination if you want new games to go there automatically; you can still move individual titles later.
If the console does not show the format prompt or the drive is missing from storage settings, turn the PS5 off and recheck connector seating, the retaining screw position, the heatsink thickness and the drive’s interface. An M.2 SATA module will not become compatible through formatting.
How a PS5-oriented SSD example fits the checklist
SanDisk documents its Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD for PS5 as officially licensed for PS5 and PS5 Pro. The manufacturer lists PCIe 4.0 NVMe, a PS5-oriented heatsink and read speeds of up to 7,300MB/s for its 1TB–4TB models, with direct gameplay support. Those are manufacturer claims for the listed capacities; verify the exact model’s assembled dimensions and current availability before purchase.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying an M.2 SATA drive
Symptom: The module fits the slot physically but is not recognized. Fix: Return it and choose an NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 Key M model. Sony’s support guidance excludes M.2 SATA.
Checking only the bare SSD dimensions
Symptom: The drive or bay cover will not seat after a heatsink is added. Fix: Use the complete assembly dimensions, including thermal pads, and stay within 110mm length, 25mm width and 11.25mm thickness.
Assuming every fast Gen4 drive is guaranteed
Symptom: A drive meets the headline speed but behaves unexpectedly or is not detected. Fix: Confirm firmware, exact capacity and cooling specifications, and retain the receipt. Sony says it cannot guarantee that every third-party M.2 SSD meeting the published specifications will work.
Expecting an external SSD to launch PS5 games
Symptom: A PS5 game appears in the library but asks to be copied before starting. Fix: Move or copy the game to console storage or the internal M.2 SSD. USB extended storage can keep the files, but it is not the direct-play location for PS5 software.

The 5,500MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential read speed, not a guaranteed loading-time result. Sony also notes that some games may not perform exactly as they do on the console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD. A compliant drive should be selected for compatibility first; benchmark numbers above the recommendation are not, by themselves, a reason to ignore fit or cooling.
Console model and firmware guidance can change. Check the current PlayStation Support instructions immediately before installation, especially if your PS5 is an early or revised chassis. Keep the packaging and purchase documentation until the drive has formatted successfully and passed several game installs.

Do I need a heatsink for a PS5 SSD?
Yes. Cooling hardware is required for the internal M.2 installation. A built-in heatsink can simplify the installation, but you must still verify the finished dimensions. If you add a separate cooler, include every thermal pad and both sides of the assembly in the thickness check.
Can I play PS5 games from an external SSD?
No. PS5 games can be stored and moved on USB extended storage, but Sony requires them to be copied to console storage or the internal M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB storage.
Is a 2TB SSD enough for PS5?
Sony does not designate one ideal capacity. Two terabytes is a practical general-purpose target for a mixed library, while 1TB suits players who rotate games frequently and 4TB or 8TB suits larger installed collections. Remember that formatting and system overhead reduce usable space.
Can I use an M.2 SATA SSD in PS5?
No. Sony explicitly excludes M.2 SATA SSDs. The drive must be an NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 model with a Key M connector; physical M.2 shape alone is not sufficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat external hard drive works with PS4?
Use a SuperSpeed USB drive rated at 5Gbps or faster, with capacity from 250GB through 8TB. Sony supports installing, moving and playing PS4 applications from compatible USB extended storage.
Is an external SSD better than an external HDD for PlayStation storage?
An external SSD generally copies games faster, while a mechanical HDD can provide more capacity for less money. Both follow the same placement rules: PS4 games can run from USB, but PS5 games must be copied back before play.
What should I do if the PS5 does not detect the new M.2 drive?
Power the console off and check that the module is seated in the connector, the spacer and screw match its length, and the complete cooler stays within Sony’s thickness limit. Confirm that the drive is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 rather than SATA. If it still fails, consult the current PlayStation Support guidance and the manufacturer’s exact model specifications.
The Bottom Line
For direct PS5 play, buy a cooled PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe Key M SSD rated at least 5,500MB/s and verify the complete assembly fits 110 × 25 × 11.25mm. Choose 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB according to the library you keep installed. For PS5 archiving or PS4 expansion, a 250GB–8TB SuperSpeed USB drive is simpler; PS5 games stored there must be copied back before launching.
