Start with the Proton version Steam supplies. If the game is native to Linux, leave Proton disabled and use the native build instead. For a Windows game, check current ProtonDB reports for the exact title, then test one change at a time: the shipped stable Proton, Proton Experimental, an older stable release named in recent reports, or GE-Proton only when a specific compatibility issue justifies an unofficial build.
Enable Steam Play in Steam Settings > Steam Play, choose a per-game tool under Library > game > Properties > Compatibility, and keep the first version that works reliably. If a change breaks the game, remove the override or return to the last known-good tool.

What Proton is—and when you need it
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows-only games on Linux through the Steam client. Valve describes it as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system. It uses Wine to facilitate this.” Proton combines Wine with graphics, input, audio and video components so a Windows game can call APIs that Linux does not provide natively.

Native versus Windows games
- Native: Steam downloads a Linux build. Do not force Proton unless you have a specific reason, because doing so can replace the supported native executable with an unnecessary compatibility layer.
- Windows-only: Steam Play supplies Proton. The game may work immediately with Valve’s default tool, or it may need a different release and a documented workaround.
- Unclear cases: Some games offer both builds, while launchers or downloadable content may behave differently from the main executable. Check which build Steam installed before changing tools.
The version-selection workflow
There is no universally best Proton release. A version that fixes one game’s launcher can introduce a regression in another game’s video playback or anti-cheat behavior. Use a repeatable process instead of changing several settings at once.
- Establish the baseline. Leave the game on the Proton version Steam recommends or supplies by default. Valve says most users should use Proton provided by the Steam Client itself. Launch the game once and record whether it reaches the menu, whether the launcher completes, and whether a game session can be started.
- Confirm the game’s build. If Steam installed a native Linux build, remove any Proton override and test the native version. If it is a Windows build, continue with Steam Play.
- Read recent ProtonDB reports. Search for the exact game and look for reports matching your launcher, multiplayer mode, graphics hardware, video codecs, controller and overlay needs. ProtonDB is crowdsourced: reports are useful evidence, not a guarantee that your installation will behave identically.
- Change one variable. If the default fails, try Proton Experimental, the newest stable Proton offered by Steam, or an older release named in a recent report. Do not change the Proton version, launch options, prefixes and graphics settings simultaneously.
- Test the failure path. Go beyond the title screen. Test the launcher, a saved game, a representative graphics scene, controller input, cut-scene playback, online sign-in and a multiplayer match when those features matter to you.
- Pin the result. Keep the first version that meets your needs, write down the exact tool and any launch option, and avoid updating it merely because a newer release exists.
What to compare between versions

Enable Steam Play in Steam
Steam Play controls whether Steam may use compatibility tools globally. The exact wording can vary slightly by Steam client revision, but the settings are in the Steam Play page.
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings.
- Select Steam Play.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles if you want Proton for games Valve has verified.
- Enable Steam Play for all other titles if you want Proton available for Windows games that are not marked as verified.
- Accept any restart prompt. Steam downloads the compatibility-layer libraries when the feature is enabled.
These global switches make Proton available; they do not force every title to use the same version. A per-game override is the normal way to pin one game while leaving other games on their defaults.
Force a Proton version for one game
Use a per-game override when you want to test Experimental, pin an older stable release, or select an installed custom tool.
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Open the drop-down list and select the Proton release you want to test.
- Close the properties window and launch the game.
To return to Steam’s automatic choice, revisit the same page and clear the force option. If the game has a working override, record it before experimenting so you can restore it quickly.

Which built-in option should you try first?

When GE-Proton is appropriate
GE-Proton is an alternative community build of Proton. It is not Valve’s default and should not be the automatic first choice for every game. Use it when a game-specific report or a known missing component points to GE-Proton, such as a launcher, codec or compatibility patch absent from the Steam-shipped build.
Project documentation warns that the Flathub build is unofficial, unsupported by both GloriousEggroll and Valve, and not tested for all games and cases. Treat a custom build as a targeted compatibility tool: verify the reason for using it, keep a known-good Valve Proton available, and expect to troubleshoot it separately from Steam’s releases.

Install a custom Proton tool
Custom tools are directory-based. You download or obtain the redistributable tool directory, place it in Steam’s compatibilitytools.d folder, restart Steam, and then select the tool from the Compatibility drop-down. The correct location depends on how Steam was installed.
Valve’s general directory
Valve documents local compatibility tools under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Create the directory if it does not exist, extract the custom tool so its tool directory is directly inside compatibilitytools.d, and restart Steam. Do not add an extra layer of nested folders that hides the tool’s metadata.

The native, Flatpak and Snap paths above are the locations documented by the GE-Proton project. Ubuntu documentation shows the same directory-based method and gives the Snap example ending in .steam/root/compatibilitytools.d. The important rule is to install into the Steam instance that is actually running; a tool placed in a different package’s home directory will not appear in the list.

Install with ProtonPlus
GE-Proton documents ProtonPlus as a graphical frontend for installing GE-Proton versions. A manager can simplify downloading and placing files, but it does not replace verification. After installation, restart Steam, open the game’s Compatibility page and confirm that the tool is listed before selecting it.

Test changes without losing a working setup
Version testing is safest when the game’s state is reproducible. Before changing anything, capture the current Proton choice, launch options, package type (native, Flatpak or Snap), and whether the game uses a launcher or anti-cheat service.
- Close the game and write down the current tool shown in Properties > Compatibility.
- Remove experimental launch options temporarily. A launch option can mask whether the Proton change itself helped.
- Change only the Proton selection.
- Launch the same test sequence each time: startup, sign-in, a saved game, a cut-scene, controller input and online features that matter.
- Record the result and keep the best-known configuration. If the new version fails, restore the previous selection before trying another variable.
Troubleshoot a game that will not launch
Clear an incorrect override
Open the game’s Properties > Compatibility page and uncheck Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool. This lets Steam choose its default again. If the game previously worked with a particular release, select that release explicitly instead of cycling through several versions.
Check launch options
Open Properties > General and inspect the Launch Options field. Remove options added during testing, especially ones copied from unrelated games. Reintroduce one option only when a current report or a diagnostic points to it.

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Valve documents that this writes a log named steam-$APPID.log in $PROTON_LOG_DIR, or in your home directory when that variable is not set. Reproduce the failure once, then inspect the log for the first meaningful error rather than jumping to the final cascade of messages. Remove the logging option after collecting the file if you do not need it for further testing.
Graphics initialization or rendering failure
DXVK and VKD3D normally provide the Vulkan-based Direct3D paths used by many games. If a report specifically identifies a rendering incompatibility, Valve documents this per-game override:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%This uses OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. It changes the rendering path and may reduce performance or alter visual behavior, so use it only for a diagnosed game-specific problem. Remove it when testing another Proton version so the comparison remains fair.
Launcher, video or codec problems
If the game engine starts but a launcher, sign-in window or pre-rendered video fails, search reports for that exact component. A different Proton release or GE-Proton may include the needed compatibility component. Test the launcher separately from gameplay and note whether a workaround fixes only the opening video or also changes online features.
Multiplayer or anti-cheat failure
A game can run offline while refusing an online session. Verify the game’s current ProtonDB reports and the developer’s anti-cheat policy before changing graphics settings. Test with the same account and mode after each Proton change; a successful menu launch is not proof that multiplayer is supported.

Controller or overlay problems
Check input in a simple menu and in gameplay, then test the overlay independently. If the issue appears only with one Proton release, record it as a version-specific regression and return to the last known-good tool. Avoid changing controller mappings and Proton at the same time.
Rollback and long-term maintenance
Return to the last known-good release
- Open Library > game > Properties > Compatibility.
- Select the version you recorded as working, or clear the force option to return to Steam’s default.
- Remove temporary launch options, including logging and rendering overrides.
- Launch the same test sequence that previously passed.
Do not assume that a newer Proton is automatically better for every title. Pin a working version when reliability matters, especially for a game you play regularly or use online.
Keep a small configuration record
- Game name and installed build or branch.
- Proton tool and release selected.
- Steam package type: native, Flatpak or Snap.
- Launch options and whether they are temporary diagnostics.
- What works: launcher, video, controller, overlay, offline play and multiplayer.
- Date of the last successful test.
Proton releases, Steam labels, GE-Proton builds and ProtonDB reports change over time. Recheck current reports when a game, launcher or Proton release updates, but change only one variable so you can identify the cause of a regression.
A practical decision tree
- Does Steam offer a native Linux build? Use it without Proton.
- Is the Windows game working on Steam’s default Proton? Keep that version and record it.
- Does it fail at launch? Test Proton Experimental, then the newest stable release, using no extra launch options.
- Did a recent update break a previously working game? Return to the recorded older Proton and compare it with the current stable release.
- Does a recent report name a specific missing component or GE-Proton fix? Install GE-Proton in the directory for your Steam package, restart Steam and verify detection.
- Is the problem graphics-specific? Use a documented rendering override only after confirming that the game’s failure matches that diagnosis.
- Is the problem multiplayer or anti-cheat? Validate online behavior directly; do not infer support from a successful offline launch.
The dependable method is deliberately conservative: begin with Valve’s Proton, consult current game-specific reports, test one controlled change, and pin the first configuration that works. Custom builds and rendering overrides are useful tools for targeted problems, not prerequisites for ordinary Steam games on Linux.
