Choose a physical PS5 game if your console has a compatible disc drive and you want a disc edition; choose digital if you want to buy and download the game to your PlayStation library. Both formats use console storage, and neither guarantees that every game or mode works offline. Before buying, check your PS5’s exact model, the game’s edition and price in your region, and its online requirements.
Check whether your PS5 can play discs
A physical PS5 game requires a disc drive. Sony lists disc-drive PS5 consoles that play PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs, while Digital Edition consoles do not include a drive by default. Sony identifies its separately sold disc drive as compatible with CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups; setup requires an internet connection to pair the drive. Check the model code on your console before buying a disc or accessory rather than relying on the “Digital Edition” name alone. Sony’s PS5 product page lists the console and drive details.

A digital purchase works on either type of PS5. Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide says purchasing and downloading games requires an internet connection and a PlayStation account.

Sony’s storage guidance explains that PS5 games use console storage regardless of format. USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, but you must move a game back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play it. A disc therefore is not a way to avoid downloads, updates, or storage use.

Think about household and offline access
Sharing digital games on one PS5
Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature allows other users on the enabled PS5 to play purchased and downloaded games offline. It can be enabled on one PS5 console at a time. To check or change it, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony provides the steps on its Console Sharing and Offline Play support page.
What “offline” does—and does not—mean
A disc can be played after console suspension if the game runs on the console without PlayStation services, according to Sony’s US Terms of Service. That is not a promise that every game works offline: a title may require online services, and an online mode cannot be used without the necessary connection or service. Digital games also are not categorically online-only; Sony supports offline play on the PS5 designated for Console Sharing and Offline Play, subject to the game’s own requirements.

Compare the exact game, not the format in the abstract
There is no universal cheapest format. Physical and digital prices, promotions, stock, and editions vary by game and region. Compare the same edition at a local retailer and in the PlayStation Store, and check whether either offer includes different bonus content, upgrades, or other terms. No particular game or current price is specified here, so a title-specific recommendation would require checking those offers directly.
Consider what Sony has announced for future releases
In a July 1, 2026 post, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, wrote: “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony says the change will not affect games released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format. This is an announced change to production of new releases, not a claim that existing disc games disappear. Sony’s announcement has the full statement.

Understand the licence distinction
A disc is a physical item, but that does not mean the game software is legally owned outright. Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe’s UK Software Usage Terms say a software purchase grants a licence rather than ownership, describe that licence as non-transferable unless applicable local law says otherwise, and restrict resale unless expressly authorised. Those are UK terms; they are not a substitute for checking the rules that apply in your jurisdiction. Avoid assuming that a disc can always be resold or lent, or that digital games can never be shared.

Make the choice
- Choose physical if your PS5 has a compatible drive and you prefer a disc edition. Verify the specific console model and the game’s current disc availability.
- Choose digital if you prefer to download games into your PlayStation library or your console lacks a compatible drive. Consider Sony’s one-console sharing setup if other household users need access.
- For either format, confirm the exact edition, local price, storage space, and whether the game or modes you want require online services.
