Start the running back whose role is more likely to produce useful opportunities this week—not simply the one with the better yards-per-carry or points-per-touch rate. Compare expected carries and targets, snap and touch shares, receiving work, and goal-line duties, then adjust for scoring format, game context, and matchup. Efficiency describes what a player has done with his chances; it does not prove he will get more chances or maintain that rate on a larger workload.
Compare roles before comparing efficiency
Begin with the opportunities each player is likely to receive in the coming game. Carries and targets are the most visible parts of a workload, but they do not tell the whole story. Check each back’s share of team touches and offensive snaps, and whether he stays on the field for passing downs or high-value situations near the goal line.
A raw touch total can make a role look safer than it is. A nominal starter may handle early-down carries while another back gets third-down targets or short-yardage work. Identify who owns those situations rather than treating every touch as equally valuable.
- Workload security: Compare recent carries, targets, snap share, and the player’s share of the backfield touches.
- Receiving role: Look at targets, catches, routes, and passing-down snaps. Receiving work can sustain a fantasy line even when rushing volume is modest.
- Scoring opportunities: Check who receives goal-line carries and red-zone work, and consider how often the offense is likely to reach scoring range.
- Role competition: Account for teammates who handle short-yardage, third-down, or change-of-pace duties.
Use the league’s scoring rules
The same workload can have different value across leagues. In PPR, catches add points, so a back who draws targets may be a stronger option than a runner with more carries but little receiving work. Half-PPR gives receptions some value, while standard scoring does not award a point simply for making a catch. Apply your league’s exact settings before comparing players.

PFF’s retrospective review of 2024 PPR RB1s found that some elite finishers did not have top-12 rushing-attempt volume but supplied substantial receiving work. Its analysis reported that overall offensive snap share, situational snap shares, and rushing-attempt share had stronger correlations with PPR RB1 success than per-play efficiency measures. The review also noted that targets could offset lower rushing volume. These are associations in a retrospective analysis, not a guarantee that a particular workload will produce a specific finish. Treat per-touch efficiency as evidence, not a forecast
Yards per carry, yards after contact, and fantasy points per touch can help show that a player has made good use of limited opportunities. They do not establish that a coach will expand his workload, or that the rate will hold if his role grows. A small number of touches, long gains, or touchdowns can make an efficiency figure look especially strong.

PFF’s March 20, 2026 review of the 2025 season illustrates why efficiency and total output are different measures: Rhamondre Stevenson averaged 1.12 fantasy points per touch and TreVeyon Henderson averaged 0.97, but Henderson finished with 208.2 total fantasy points to Stevenson’s 180.8. PFF attributed part of Stevenson’s high rate to nine touchdowns and described his 162 touches as short of a volume-back workload. PFF’s 2025 running back review
Efficiency still matters. When two players have similarly secure roles, evidence of playmaking can help break a close decision. But do not let a good rate substitute for evidence that the player will be on the field and receive the ball.

Adjust for the week’s context
Injuries, depth-chart changes, opponent tendencies, and likely game script can all change a back’s expected work. A team projected to lead may create more rushing chances; a team likely to trail may lean more on passes and targets. Matchup and game script are modifiers to a role projection, not substitutes for estimating the role itself.
Recheck current reports and recent usage before setting the lineup: backfield responsibilities can change quickly. NFL Fantasy’s Week 2, 2025 examples show the reasoning in practice, but are not current-week recommendations. The article highlighted Omarion Hampton’s 81% offensive snap share, 15 of 16 running-back carries, and two targets despite mixed production. It also urged caution on RJ Harvey, who had seven touches, a 31% snap share, and no red-zone touches while J.K. Dobbins received that work. NFL Fantasy’s Week 2, 2025 running back analysis

Make the start/sit call
- Project the role: Estimate each player’s likely carries, targets, and snap share using current usage and injury news.
- Locate valuable work: Identify who gets passing-down snaps, goal-line opportunities, and red-zone touches.
- Apply league scoring: Give receptions their correct value for your format and consider how your lineup alternatives affect the decision.
- Adjust for context: Account for likely game script and opponent tendencies without letting a matchup label override a weak role.
- Use efficiency as a tiebreaker: Consider per-touch production after workload and situation, not instead of them.
The practical question is not just which back has been more efficient, but which player is most likely to receive a repeatable, valuable role this week. PFF’s historical 2024 PPR figures offer an illustration of volume’s connection to total scoring: Saquon Barkley scored 355.3 points, Jahmyr Gibbs 316.9, Bijan Robinson 310.4, and Derrick Henry 306.3; they were the four backs above 300.0 PPR points in that season.
