How to Choose Between Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 Pro for a Demanding RPG

Choose the PS5 Pro if your priority is the sharpest image, steadier performance in demanding third-party RPGs and the best results from games carrying a PS5 Pro Enhanced update. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you value handheld play, Nintendo exclusives, hybrid flexibility and a lower entry price more than maximum visual detail. Switch 2 can run ambitious games, but its portable form factor involves visible compromises in texture clarity, foliage detail and distant rendering in some demanding ports.

The decision in one table

Priority Better fit Why
Maximum image quality on a television PS5 Pro Its higher-power home-console design and PS5 Pro Enhanced updates can improve resolution, detail and performance in supported games.
Playing in bed, while traveling or away from the TV Switch 2 It works handheld, in tabletop mode or docked.
Nintendo RPGs and upgraded Zelda editions Switch 2 It supports compatible Switch games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades for selected titles.
Large third-party RPG library PS5 Pro It plays PS5 games, PS5 Pro Enhanced titles and compatible PS4 games through Game Boost.
Lowest purchase price Switch 2 Nintendo announced a US launch MSRP of $449.99 for June 5, 2025, compared with Sony’s $699.99 US MSRP for PS5 Pro.
Included storage PS5 Pro The package includes a 2TB SSD; Switch 2 has 256GB and needs microSD Express expansion for installed games.

These are different kinds of upgrades rather than two versions of the same console. PS5 Pro is a premium, television-first PlayStation 5. Switch 2 is a hybrid system designed to move between a handheld screen and a docked display. The right choice depends on which compromise you notice every day.

Price, package contents and the real cost of ownership

Switch 2: lower entry price, expansion likely for digital RPGs

Nintendo announced Switch 2 at a $449.99 US suggested retail price for its June 5, 2025 launch. The standard package includes the console, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Joy-Con 2 grip, straps, the dock, an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and a USB-C charging cable. That means the basic system is ready for handheld or television play without a separate controller purchase.

The 256GB internal storage is the important qualification. Usable space is lower after system data, and a few large RPG installations can consume much of it. Switch 2 expansion uses microSD Express cards, with support up to 2TB. Older, non-Express cards remain usable only for copying screenshots and videos from the original Nintendo Switch; they are not the general game-storage solution on Switch 2. If you expect to buy demanding RPGs digitally, include a compatible microSD Express card in your budget from the start.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

PS5 Pro: higher price, substantially more built-in storage

Sony lists PS5 Pro at a $699.99 US MSRP. The package includes a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The higher price buys a home-console configuration and four times the advertised internal capacity of Switch 2, although game sizes vary and the comparison is not a measure of usable free space.

PS5 Pro is a digital-focused purchase in the listed configuration. If you use physical discs, verify the current package and add-on disc-drive availability in your region before buying; the cited launch specification lists the console, SSD and controller but does not state a disc drive as included.

Budget checklist

  • Switch 2: reserve money for a microSD Express card if you will install several digital RPGs. A Switch 2 Pro Controller is optional but useful for long docked sessions.
  • PS5 Pro: reserve money for any disc-drive requirement, a second controller or expanded storage only if your library eventually needs it.
  • Both: regional prices, stock and game pricing can change after the launch figures above, so treat those numbers as the announced US baselines rather than a worldwide current price.

Graphics and performance in demanding RPGs

Why PS5 Pro has the advantage on a television

PS5 Pro is built for sustained home-console output. In games with a PS5 Pro Enhanced update, developers can target higher image quality, more stable performance or a combination of the two. Sony’s Enhanced examples include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Demon’s Souls, Hogwarts Legacy and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The designation is game-specific: an Enhanced patch can change rendering features, but it is not a guarantee that every title uses the same resolution or frame-rate mode.

PS5 games remain playable even without an Enhanced patch. Sony also says Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 compatible PS4 games, potentially improving how older software runs, although the exact result depends on each game.

What Switch 2 can do—and where compromises appear

Switch 2 uses a custom NVIDIA processor in a lower-power hybrid system. Its 7.9-inch screen is a 1920×1080 LCD with HDR10 and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz. In the dock, compatible games and televisions can receive output up to 4K/60, with compatible 120fps modes. Those output ceilings do not mean every RPG renders at 4K or 120 frames per second; developers choose settings appropriate to each game and mode.

Nintendo’s launch material identifies Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as an example of an ambitious release. It also lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which provide smoother frame rates, faster loading and improved graphics compared with the original Switch versions.

What the hands-on comparison actually shows

A June 2, 2026 hands-on comparison by Tom’s Guide used Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The reviewer described Switch 2 portability as the main attraction, while PS5 Pro produced sharper distant textures. In Switch 2 handheld mode, the report noted fuzzy or jagged foliage, pop-in and less detailed distant character models. This is useful practical evidence, not a universal benchmark: it covers one game, one reviewer and primarily handheld play. No standardized independent frame-rate laboratory test is established here, so do not treat the observations as a score for every RPG.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

The practical rule is straightforward: if you stop to inspect distant scenery, foliage or fine texture detail on a large television, PS5 Pro is the safer choice. If you are willing to accept softer detail in exchange for playing the same type of adventure away from the TV, Switch 2’s compromises may be worthwhile.

Portability, display modes and everyday use

Switch 2’s three ways to play

  1. Handheld: attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers and use the 7.9-inch 1080p screen. Battery life is estimated at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game and conditions.
  2. Tabletop: use the system’s built-in stand with detached controllers for shared or short-session play.
  3. Docked: connect to a television for up to 4K/60 output, or compatible 120fps modes, when the game and display support them.

Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can operate as a mouse in compatible games. That feature is relevant to selected software, not a replacement for a conventional control layout in every RPG. For long docked sessions, Nintendo’s optional Switch 2 Pro Controller may feel more comfortable than the compact Joy-Con grip, but it is not required to use the console.

PS5 Pro is a fixed-location system

PS5 Pro has no handheld or tabletop mode. Its advantage is consistency: connect it to a suitable television or monitor, install the game and play from the same high-power system every time. That is ideal if your RPG sessions happen primarily at home and you care more about image quality than location.

RPG libraries and upgrade paths

When Switch 2 is the better RPG platform

Switch 2 is the choice for Nintendo’s first-party RPG and adventure ecosystem, plus compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo cautions that some older titles may not be supported or fully compatible, so check a specific game’s status rather than assuming every Switch release behaves identically.

The two Zelda Nintendo Switch 2 Editions are the clearest upgrade examples in the launch material. They target smoother frame rates, faster loading and better graphics. Switch 2 also broadens the system’s role beyond Nintendo software with releases such as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. The trade-off is that third-party versions may use reduced texture detail, shorter draw distances or other adjustments to fit a portable power envelope.

When PS5 Pro is the better RPG platform

PS5 Pro gives you the PlayStation 5 library and the growing set of titles marked “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” Sony’s listed examples include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Demon’s Souls, Hogwarts Legacy and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Enhancements vary by game, so read the individual patch notes or in-game graphics options when deciding whether a particular RPG benefits.

Because PS5 Pro also plays PS5 games without an Enhanced update, you are not limited to the marked list. Game Boost extends compatibility to more than 8,500 PS4 games according to Sony, which is useful if your RPG backlog includes older PlayStation releases.

Choose by the kind of RPG player you are

Pick Switch 2 if these statements describe you

  • You regularly play in handheld mode, travel with your console or share one television.
  • Nintendo exclusives and upgraded Zelda editions are central to your buying decision.
  • You prefer a lower initial price and can accept buying a microSD Express card later or immediately.
  • You regard portability as more valuable than perfectly sharp distant textures.
  • You are comfortable checking compatibility for older Switch games and checking how each third-party port performs.

Pick PS5 Pro if these statements describe you

  • Your RPG sessions are almost always on a good television or monitor at home.
  • You notice texture softness, foliage artifacts, pop-in and distant-model detail.
  • You want enhanced versions of demanding games such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or Dragon’s Dogma 2.
  • You want 2TB of included SSD storage rather than planning expansion around a 256GB system.
  • You are willing to pay the higher US MSRP for sustained home-console performance.

If you are undecided

Ask which inconvenience you will encounter more often: carrying a larger home-console setup to another room, or accepting lower visual detail in a portable version. The first answer points to Switch 2; the second points to PS5 Pro. Do not choose solely from the dock’s “up to 4K/60” or “120fps” figures, because those are output capabilities, not promises about every RPG’s internal rendering mode.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. List your three must-play RPGs. Check whether each is available on the system, whether an upgrade or Enhanced patch exists and whether the version is physical, digital or both.
  2. Decide where you will play. Choose Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop use is a weekly requirement. Choose PS5 Pro if your play is television-based.
  3. Set the storage budget. For Switch 2 digital purchases, add a microSD Express card rated for the system, up to the supported 2TB maximum. For PS5 Pro, start with the included 2TB SSD and expand only if your library demands it.
  4. Match the display to the console. Switch 2’s highest dock output requires a compatible 4K television, while 120fps modes require a compatible high-refresh display and game. PS5 Pro’s visual benefits are easiest to see on a quality large screen.
  5. Check the exact game mode. Look for performance, quality or Enhanced options after installing updates. A patch may improve image quality without offering a locked high frame rate, or vice versa.
  6. Plan controls for long sessions. Joy-Con 2 is included; a Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional comfort upgrade for docked play. PS5 Pro includes one DualSense controller.
  7. Verify regional details before checkout. Prices, stock, disc-drive bundles, game availability and patch support can change by country and over time.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “4K” means native 4K in every game

Switch 2’s dock supports output up to 4K/60, but a game may render at a lower internal resolution and upscale. The same principle applies to advertised frame-rate modes: compatibility depends on the game and television.

Buying a regular microSD card for Switch 2 game storage

Switch 2 expansion is limited to microSD Express cards for games. A non-Express card is not the correct replacement for installed RPG storage; Nintendo limits those older cards to copying screenshots and videos from the original Switch.

Treating every PS5 Pro game as automatically enhanced

Only titles with developer support receive specific PS5 Pro Enhanced features. Other PS5 games still run, and Game Boost covers many PS4 titles, but benefits differ by software.

Using one review as a universal performance verdict

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth comparison is a concrete example of the portability-versus-detail trade-off. It is not a standardized test of every Switch 2 RPG, nor does it establish a universal frame-rate ranking.

Verdict

For a demanding RPG played primarily at home, PS5 Pro is the better technical choice: it costs more, but includes a 2TB SSD and is the platform to choose when sharper distant detail, enhanced patches and sustained console performance matter most. For a player who will actually use handheld or tabletop mode, wants Nintendo’s RPG catalog and values a lower entry price, Switch 2 is the better fit. Its 256GB storage and the possibility of softer textures, foliage artifacts or pop-in in demanding ports are the costs of that flexibility.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described Switch 2 as “a leap forward” in expanding gaming possibilities. That captures the central distinction: Switch 2 expands where you can play, while PS5 Pro concentrates on how demanding RPGs look and run on a home display.
