For most players who can use Nintendo 3DS hardware, Ocarina of Time 3D is the most complete single choice. It remakes the original adventure with updated graphics and 3DS-specific controls, and it includes Master Quest as an unlockable challenge after you finish the main game. Choose the original Ocarina of Time when preserving the classic presentation matters most. Choose Master Quest when your priority is a tougher, rearranged dungeon experience rather than a new story.
The practical decision comes down to three questions: which hardware you can use, whether you want the original or remake presentation, and whether you want the standard adventure or altered, harder dungeons. The comparison below separates those choices so you do not buy one version expecting another.

Which version should you choose?
The best fit depends on what you value more than on a universal ranking. Use this table as the short answer, then read the detailed sections for the caveats.
| Version | Best fit | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Ocarina of Time | Players who want the original presentation and the standard adventure. | The Nintendo material considered for this comparison does not provide a complete feature history for every original release or platform. |
| Master Quest | Players who already know the adventure or specifically want more demanding dungeon puzzles. | Dungeon puzzles are changed. In the 3DS implementation, the world is mirrored and enemies deal double damage. |
| Ocarina of Time 3D | Players with compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware who want a remake plus access to Master Quest in one edition. | Remade graphics, touch-based item handling, gyro-assisted first-person aiming, hint videos, Boss Challenge, and unlockable Master Quest. |
If you want one purchase that covers the conventional adventure and the alternate challenge, the 3DS edition is the efficient option. If authenticity of the original audiovisual and interface presentation is the deciding factor, select the original instead. If you are choosing solely for difficulty, treat Master Quest as a dungeon-focused challenge mode, not as a separate sequel.

What is the original Ocarina of Time?
The original is the baseline experience against which the other two choices are being compared here: the standard adventure in its original presentation. That means its appeal is not a special challenge ruleset or a remake feature set; it is the version to select when you want to see and play the classic form rather than a later reworking.
There is an important evidence limit when discussing “the original.” Nintendo has released the game in more than one historical context, but the Nintendo sources used for this comparison do not establish a complete, release-by-release list of platform differences, display changes, controller behavior, or preservation details. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise that every original release has identical technical characteristics.

For a buying decision, focus on the role this choice plays: it is the standard adventure and the reference point for the remake. It does not automatically provide the 3DS interface additions, and it should not be selected because you expect the rearranged dungeon layouts associated with Master Quest.
What does Master Quest change?
Master Quest is an alternate challenge built around changed dungeon puzzles and altered placements, not a wholly separate story. Its purpose is to make familiar progression less predictable and to test players who want to rethink room layouts, item use, and puzzle logic.
How does the 3DS version handle it?
In Ocarina of Time 3D, Master Quest unlocks after you complete the main game. The mode mirrors the game world and makes enemies inflict double damage. Those two changes affect both navigation and combat: even a player who remembers the standard route cannot rely on the same visual orientation, and mistakes in fights carry a larger health cost.
Is it a new campaign?
No. Nintendo’s description frames the mode as an alternate challenge with changed dungeon puzzles and item or enemy placements. It is best understood as a modified version of the same adventure framework, not an independent narrative with a different plot.

Does every historical version use the 3DS rules?
Do not generalize the mirrored world and double-damage rules to every release called Master Quest. The producer interview discussing those rules is specifically about the mode in Ocarina of Time 3D. The available Nintendo material here does not establish a complete comparison of every historical implementation.
What does Ocarina of Time 3D add?
Ocarina of Time 3D is a Nintendo 3DS remake, not merely a port with a new title. Nintendo describes remade graphics and several features designed around the handheld’s hardware.
Remade graphics
The visual presentation was rebuilt for the 3DS release. Choose this version when you want the classic adventure represented through the remake’s graphics rather than the original release’s presentation.
Touch-based item handling
The 3DS lower screen provides touch-based item handling. Nintendo lists this as a way to manage equipment without treating the standard button layout as the only interface. It is a practical difference for players who prefer selecting items on a touch screen.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Gyro-assisted first-person aiming
Nintendo also lists gyro-assisted aiming for first-person actions. This gives you a motion-control option in situations where you would otherwise aim with the traditional controls. Whether you prefer it is personal, but it is a defining 3DS-specific feature that the original presentation does not provide.
Hint videos
Hint videos are included as an additional aid. They make the remake more approachable if you get stuck, while remaining separate from the altered puzzle structure of Master Quest.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Boss Challenge
The announcement for the 3DS edition also describes a Boss Challenge. This is an additional way to revisit boss encounters beyond simply progressing through the main adventure.
Built-in Master Quest
Instead of requiring a separate edition to access the alternate challenge, the 3DS release includes it and unlocks it when the main game is complete. That combination is why it is the most feature-complete single choice for players who have compatible hardware.

How do hardware and current access affect the choice?
Hardware determines which option is practical before presentation or difficulty enters the discussion. Ocarina of Time 3D requires compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware. An original release requires the system and edition that carry that release, while the historical availability of particular versions can vary by region and format.
Can you still buy the 3DS version digitally?
Nintendo’s UK product page states that purchases through the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended on 27 March 2023. You should not plan on making a new digital purchase from that store. A physical copy may be relevant, but availability, condition, regional compatibility, and current pricing were not established by the product information used here, so verify those details before buying.
What should you check before purchasing?
- Confirm that your system is compatible with the edition you are considering.
- Check whether the listing is physical or digital; the 3DS eShop purchase channel is closed.
- For a used physical copy, verify condition and that the seller’s region and format match your hardware.
- Do not assume that a product labeled Master Quest has the exact mirrored-world and double-damage rules documented for the 3DS implementation.
How different are the three experiences in practice?
The differences are easiest to understand along three axes: presentation, interface, and challenge.
Presentation
The original preserves the classic form. Ocarina of Time 3D presents the adventure through remade graphics. Master Quest is defined primarily by its altered challenge rather than by being a separate visual remake; when discussing the 3DS version, its mirrored world is a gameplay change that also affects how the world looks and feels to navigate.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Interface and controls
The 3DS remake adds touch-based item handling and gyro-assisted first-person aiming, plus optional hint videos and Boss Challenge content. Those additions are reasons to choose the remake even if you do not intend to play Master Quest. The original choice is the appropriate one if those 3DS-specific systems would distract from the classic presentation you want.
Challenge
The standard adventure is the reference difficulty. Master Quest changes dungeon puzzles and, in the 3DS mode, mirrors the world and doubles enemy damage. The result is not simply “the same game but harder”: remembered routes, room orientation, and combat tolerance all become less dependable.
How should you decide step by step?
- Start with hardware. If you do not have compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware, the 3DS edition cannot be your practical choice. Select an accessible original release instead, while checking the specific system and format.
- Decide whether original presentation is essential. If your priority is seeing the classic presentation as it was released, choose Ocarina of Time. If you prefer remade graphics and handheld-specific controls, continue with the 3DS option.
- Decide whether you need the alternate challenge immediately. If changed dungeon puzzles are the main attraction, seek a version that explicitly provides Master Quest. In the 3DS edition, it is included but becomes available only after the main game is completed.
- Choose your tolerance for combat punishment. In 3DS Master Quest, enemies deal double damage. That is a meaningful rules change, not a cosmetic label, so it suits players who want a more demanding replay.
- Check the purchase route. Because the Nintendo 3DS eShop stopped accepting purchases on 27 March 2023, confirm whether you are buying a physical copy and whether its condition and regional compatibility meet your needs.
Which version is best for a first playthrough?
For a first playthrough with access to a compatible 3DS, Ocarina of Time 3D offers the broadest set of options: a remake presentation, touch and gyro features, hint videos, Boss Challenge, and a later path into Master Quest. You can experience the standard adventure before deciding whether you want the harder rearrangement.
Choose the original for a first playthrough when the historical presentation is itself the reason you are playing. That choice is not inferior; it answers a different goal. It gives you the standard adventure without asking you to adopt the remake’s interface and visual changes.

Starting with Master Quest makes the most sense when you already understand that you are choosing a challenge-oriented variation. On 3DS, it is intentionally gated behind completion of the main game, so the edition’s structure expects the standard adventure to come first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the most common selection mistakes?
- Assuming “Master Quest” means a new story. Its documented purpose is altered puzzles and placements within the established adventure framework.
- Assuming every release has identical rules. The mirrored world and double enemy damage are specifically established for the 3DS implementation in the cited Nintendo material.
- Buying the 3DS edition expecting instant access to Master Quest. In that edition, the mode unlocks after the main game is finished.
- Planning a new 3DS eShop purchase. Nintendo states that purchases ended on 27 March 2023; investigate physical availability instead.
- Calling the remake a simple port. Nintendo lists remade graphics, touch item handling, gyro aiming, hint videos, and Boss Challenge as additions.
What does Nintendo’s own explanation tell us about the difficulty?
The design intent behind the 3DS challenge is unusually clear in Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview. Producer Eiji Aonuma explained: “But I didn’t think it would be that challenging if it were the same as in the original, so Link takes double damage.” The comment explains why the 3DS version’s extra damage is part of the mode’s intended challenge rather than an accidental balance difference.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That explanation also supports a useful distinction: Master Quest is for players seeking a deliberately altered test, while the original and the standard route in Ocarina of Time 3D are the safer choices when you want to learn the adventure without that extra punishment.
What is the final recommendation?
Pick Ocarina of Time 3D if you have compatible 3DS hardware and want the most features in one edition. Pick the original Ocarina of Time if preserving the classic presentation is more important than remake conveniences. Pick Master Quest when changed dungeons and, for the 3DS implementation, a mirrored world and double enemy damage are exactly the challenge you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Master Quest a completely different story?
No. Nintendo presents it as an alternate challenge built from the established adventure, with changed dungeon puzzles and altered item or enemy placements. The available description does not characterize it as a separate narrative campaign.
Were the mirrored world and double damage used in every release of Master Quest?
That is not established. Nintendo’s producer interview discusses those rules specifically in connection with Ocarina of Time 3D, so they should not automatically be applied to every historical version.
When was the European release of Ocarina of Time 3D?
Nintendo UK lists the European release in 2011. That date identifies the product’s regional launch, not current stock or the condition of copies available today.
Can I buy Ocarina of Time 3D from the Nintendo 3DS eShop now?
No. Nintendo’s UK product page says purchases through the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended on 27 March 2023. Any current purchase decision therefore needs to account for physical availability or another legitimate format, with compatibility checked first.
