1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the Switch release if convenience is your priority; choose original Nintendo 64 hardware if authenticity and physical ownership matter more. The Switch edition is the Nintendo 64 game delivered through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It is not a modern remake. You get portability, suspend points, customizable controls and easy play on a current television, while the 1998 cartridge version gives you the original console, controller behavior, display chain and a game you physically own.
The short decision
Both options let you play the Nintendo 64-era The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but they serve different priorities. The Switch route is the practical choice for a first playthrough, short sessions, handheld play or anyone who does not already own Nintendo 64 hardware. The original route is aimed at collectors, cartridge owners, CRT enthusiasts, speedrunners and players who want every part of the original hardware chain.

| If you care most about… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick access on hardware you already use | Switch | The game is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and can be played in handheld or docked modes supported by your Switch. |
| Stopping and resuming during short sessions | Switch | Nintendo Classics suspend points let you return to a paused state without relying only on the original console’s save routine. |
| Modern button layouts | Switch | Current controllers work with the software, and Nintendo provides a Change Controls option for remapping. |
| The original three-pronged controller and analog-stick feel | Nintendo 64 | The original controller is the native input device for the cartridge release. |
| Physical ownership and no subscription | Nintendo 64 | A working console and cartridge are the complete play setup; the original hardware does not require Nintendo Switch Online. |
| CRT-era presentation and an original hardware chain | Nintendo 64 | The console, cartridge and display determine the experience rather than the Switch service’s emulation and modern video output. |
If you want modern convenience but dislike playing with Joy-Con or a Pro Controller, the strongest compromise is a Switch plus Nintendo’s official N64-style controller. It uses the control geometry intended for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software while retaining the service’s portability and suspend features.

Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo includes Ocarina of Time in its Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library. Access requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. You install or open the Nintendo 64 application associated with that service and launch the game from its library. Your access is therefore tied to the membership and the continued availability of the service, rather than to a separately owned cartridge.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nintendo’s listing explicitly warns: “There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.” That statement is important when someone says the Switch version is “the same.” The underlying N64-era game is the basis, but the delivery environment is different, and Nintendo does not promise an identical result in every technical or visual detail.
The original Nintendo 64 release
The alternative is the 1998 Nintendo 64 release played from an original cartridge in an original console. You supply the hardware, game media, controller and display connection yourself. No Nintendo Switch Online membership is involved. Used-market condition matters: cartridge reliability, console condition, controller wear and the quality of the video connection can all affect what you experience.
Do not confuse this with a Switch 2 remake
A separately announced Switch 2 remake is a different product from the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics release. The current Switch comparison is between the N64 game provided through the classic-games service and the 1998 cartridge version, not between the classic release and that newer remake.
Access, ownership and ongoing requirements
The largest practical difference is entitlement. On Switch, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a prerequisite for the N64 library. If the membership is inactive, the service software may remain installed, but the library access required to launch the game is not available. This makes Switch convenient when your membership is already active, but it is not a one-time cartridge purchase.
On original hardware, the console and cartridge are your physical play system. Once you have a functioning setup, no online account, service renewal or internet connection is needed to start the game. The trade-off is that finding a complete, working setup can require more effort, and the condition of second-hand hardware is not uniform. A cartridge that looks clean may still need testing, and an N64 controller’s analog stick may be loose from age or heavy use.

Controls: modern pads versus the original three-pronged design
Joy-Con and Pro Controller
Switch lets you use current controllers with the Nintendo Classics software. That is helpful if you already own a Switch, but the button geometry is not identical to an N64 pad. The original game was designed around a central analog stick, a left-hand directional cluster and the separate C-button group. On a Joy-Con or Pro Controller, those actions are distributed across a more conventional modern layout.

Remapping cannot recreate the physical shape of an N64 controller, but it can move frequently used actions to positions that feel natural on your chosen pad. Save a layout that keeps movement, camera control and the main action button easy to reach before beginning a long session.
The official N64-style Switch controller
Nintendo describes its N64 controller for Nintendo Switch as designed for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software. It is the relevant accessory if you want the classic control geometry without returning to original console hardware. Nintendo does not guarantee that the accessory works with every other Switch game, so treat it as a specialist controller for the N64 library rather than a universal replacement for a Pro Controller.
The Switch-era controller also has built-in rumble. Nintendo’s support information describes this as taking the place of the original optional Rumble Pak. That means you do not need a separate Rumble Pak accessory for the Switch controller, but it does not establish that every physical or timing characteristic is identical to an original N64 controller.

Original N64 controller
The cartridge release uses the native N64 controller and its three-pronged layout. For players who learned the game on that hardware, the shape and analog-stick response can be as important as the game software. Wear is the main caveat: an older stick may have less precise neutral positioning or a wider range of motion than a well-maintained controller.

Saving, suspend points and what changes in play
The Switch service documents suspend points for Nintendo Classics games. A suspend point is a service-level convenience: you can stop at a chosen moment and return to that state later. It does not alter the story, dungeons, items or level design of Ocarina of Time, and it should not be confused with a new save system built into the original game.
The Nintendo 64 version uses the game’s native save behavior and the cartridge’s physical save storage. You progress by using the original in-game save options and by leaving the console and cartridge in a working state. If your goal is to reproduce the historical play pattern, the cartridge is the appropriate choice. If you regularly have only a few minutes to play, suspend points make the Switch version much easier to fit around a modern schedule.
Presentation and display differences
The original N64 setup provides the baseline hardware presentation: the console generates the signal, the cartridge supplies the game data and your television or CRT handles the display. A CRT can produce the look associated with late-1990s console play, while a modern television may require an adapter or upscaler and can introduce its own processing.
The Switch version runs through Nintendo’s classic-games software on contemporary Switch hardware. It is easier to connect to a current television and can be played handheld, but it is not a promise of a pixel-for-pixel or timing-for-timing reproduction. Nintendo’s warning about differences in performance and presentation is the appropriate boundary: expect the N64 game in a Switch service environment, not a hardware clone.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
No authoritative frame-rate, resolution or latency figure is established for this comparison, so those numbers should not be used to decide between the versions. Your meaningful choice is between an officially provided Switch presentation with modern convenience and the physical console-and-display chain you select for the N64.
Portability and the way you play
Switch supports the play contexts provided by the system, including handheld and docked use. You can move from a television to handheld play without moving a console or reconnecting a cartridge. That makes the service particularly suitable for commuters, shared televisions, travel and players who divide a long adventure into short sessions.
An original N64 is fixed to its console, power, controller and display arrangement. Moving it is possible, but it is a separate hardware setup rather than a mode selected from the game. The benefit is consistency with the physical system you have configured; the cost is less flexibility when your available play space changes.
How to begin on Switch
- Confirm the membership tier. Your Nintendo account needs an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. A standard Nintendo Switch Online plan without the Expansion Pack does not satisfy the N64 library requirement.
- Open the Nintendo 64 classic-games application. Use the Nintendo Switch Online software associated with the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library and locate Ocarina of Time. Application names and store presentation can differ by region.
- Choose your controller. Start with a Joy-Con or Pro Controller if you already own one. If the modern layout feels awkward, use Nintendo’s N64-style controller when available for your region.
- Review the original mapping. In the game’s control-help or settings area, view the original button assignments before changing anything. This gives you a reference point if a custom layout becomes confusing.
- Use Change Controls deliberately. Remap only the actions that cause problems, then test movement, camera control, item use and menus in a safe area before committing to a long session.
- Create a suspend point after a natural stopping point. Suspend points are best treated as a convenient pause-and-return tool. Continue to use the game’s own save behavior for normal progression.
If the game is missing from the library, first check that the account launching the application has the Expansion Pack entitlement and that the Nintendo account region matches the service you intended to use. If the application opens but the game will not start, verify the membership status before changing controller settings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow to choose and prepare original Nintendo 64 hardware
- Assemble the complete chain. You need a Nintendo 64 console, an original Ocarina of Time cartridge, a compatible power supply, a controller and a display connection that your television accepts.
- Inspect used equipment. Check the cartridge shell and contacts, test that the console reaches its game screen and examine the analog stick for excessive looseness. Condition varies substantially among used systems.
- Connect the display before troubleshooting the game. If the console powers on but the television shows no picture, isolate the cable, adapter or display input before assuming the cartridge is defective.
- Use the native controller layout. The original game expects the N64 pad. A worn stick can make otherwise correct inputs feel inaccurate, so test the controller independently if movement seems inconsistent.
- Save in the game as intended. The physical setup uses the original console’s save behavior rather than Switch suspend points. Avoid treating a power-off as a suspend action.
This route is most satisfying when you already own a tested console and cartridge. If you would have to purchase every component, the effort and uncertainty of used hardware become part of the decision, not a hidden detail.

Which version fits your priorities?
Pick Switch for a first playthrough
A newcomer usually benefits from the lower setup friction. The service puts the game on hardware that is already connected to a modern television or available as a handheld. You can stop with a suspend point, adjust controls when the N64 layout feels unfamiliar and avoid sourcing an old console before seeing whether the game suits you.
Pick Switch for frequent short sessions
If your playtime comes in ten- or twenty-minute windows, suspend points and quick access are more valuable than recreating the original setup. The game itself remains the N64-era adventure, but the service fits it around a contemporary schedule.
Pick Switch with the N64-style controller for familiar geometry
This combination addresses the main objection to the service: modern pads do not feel like the controller the game was designed around. You retain Switch portability and service convenience while using an accessory made for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software. Availability can vary, and Nintendo’s compatibility statement is specifically about the classic-games software.
Pick original N64 for collecting and physical ownership
Collectors and cartridge owners gain a setup that is independent of a subscription and represented by objects they can keep. The appeal includes the cartridge, the console, the original controller and the display chain, not just the software running on screen.
Pick original N64 for CRT-focused authenticity
If your goal is to experience the game through a CRT and the signal path associated with the 1998 release, the original console is the direct route. A Switch connected to a modern television can be enjoyable, but it is a different presentation environment.
Pick original N64 for hardware purism or speedrunning practice
Players who want the original controller behavior and hardware chain, including speedrunners and other purists, should start with the cartridge release. The Switch version remains useful for learning routes or playing conveniently, but it is not the same hardware platform.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
| Problem | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| You installed the classic-games app but cannot launch the game | The account lacks an active Expansion Pack membership | Check the membership tier and the account that is launching the Nintendo 64 application. |
| The controls feel wrong on a Pro Controller | The N64 button groups do not map naturally to a modern pad | View the original mapping, then use Change Controls to build a layout you can test in-game. |
| You expect the Switch release to look or behave exactly like a cartridge | Nintendo cautions that performance and presentation differ from original versions | Choose the N64 hardware if identical original presentation is the deciding requirement. |
| You buy an N64-style Switch controller expecting it to work everywhere | Nintendo’s support statement is focused on Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software | Use it for the classic-games library and keep a general-purpose Switch controller for other games. |
| The original setup shows no picture | Old cables, adapters, television inputs or console condition can fail independently of the cartridge | Test the display path and console with known-working equipment before judging the game media. |
| You turn off the N64 expecting to resume exactly where you stopped | The cartridge release does not provide Switch-style suspend points | Use the game’s native save behavior and treat power-off as a normal console shutdown. |
A practical decision checklist
- Do you already own a working N64, cartridge and controller? If yes, the original version has a much lower additional setup burden.
- Do you need handheld play or easy movement between rooms? If yes, Switch is the only option of these two that provides that flexibility.
- Are you willing to maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership? If no, choose the physical N64 setup.
- Do you want suspend points for short sessions? If yes, choose Switch.
- Does the original controller’s shape and analog response matter more than convenience? If yes, choose N64, or pair Switch with the official N64-style controller as a compromise.
- Is CRT-era presentation a requirement rather than a preference? If yes, choose original hardware.
- Are you buying used equipment? Allow for condition checks, especially the cartridge and analog stick, before treating the N64 option as ready to play.
Final recommendation
For most people starting Ocarina of Time now, the Switch release through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the easier recommendation: it is accessible on current hardware, supports suspend points, offers remappable controls and works in portable play. Add Nintendo’s N64-style controller if the modern button layout is the main concern.
Choose the original Nintendo 64 version when your priority is the physical cartridge, subscription-free access, the native three-pronged controller, CRT-era presentation or a hardware-authentic experience. Neither choice changes the fundamental adventure, but they do change how you obtain it, control it, save between sessions and see it on your screen.
