Choose Performance when responsive combat and camera control matter most; choose Ray Tracing when you prefer richer, more atmospheric lighting. That advice applies to the 2022 next-generation build on base PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, where the two modes target different frame rates. It does not apply unchanged to the September 2026 Remastered version: on PS5, Ray Tracing Mode now targets 60 FPS, while Performance Mode targets 60 FPS at a higher resolution and can reach up to 90 FPS on a compatible variable-refresh-rate (VRR) display. Identify your edition and console before changing the setting.
Start by identifying your version and console
The Witcher 3 has two materially different next-generation baselines. The original 2022 update remains the version many owners have installed, while the September 28, 2026 Remastered release changes the PS5 mode trade-off. Xbox Series S also has a different feature set from Series X, and PC results depend on hardware rather than a console-style preset guarantee.

If the title screen or platform menu identifies the game only as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Complete Edition, that does not by itself tell you whether you have the 2022 build or the 2026 Remastered release. Check the installed version information and the update description on your platform. The mode names and behavior described below are tied to the version labels in the table.

| Mode | Frame-rate target | Lighting features | Resolution behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 60 FPS target | Uses the standard lighting path rather than the full ray-traced package. | Dynamic resolution adjusts the image to sustain the faster target. | Players who prioritize input response, traversal and combat timing. |
| Ray Tracing | 30 FPS target | Ray-traced global illumination and ray-traced ambient occlusion produce more physically informed indirect and contact lighting. | Dynamic resolution works within the slower, effects-heavy mode. | Players who value atmosphere and lighting accuracy over immediacy. |
These are official targets from CD PROJEKT RED and PlayStation’s 2022 descriptions, not a promise that every scene holds the number. Dense towns, combat effects, weather and camera movement can make a target fluctuate. A target is the performance goal the renderer is designed around; it is not the same as a locked frame rate.

Why 60 FPS feels different in play
At 60 frames per second, the game presents a new frame about every 16.7 milliseconds, compared with about 33.3 milliseconds at 30 FPS. That shorter interval makes a stick movement, camera correction or dodge appear sooner and with less visible stepping. The difference is most obvious during fast horseback travel, fights against groups and rapid camera turns. It does not make Geralt’s animations or enemy logic twice as accurate, but it gives your input more frequent visual feedback.
What ray-traced lighting contributes
Ray-traced global illumination models light that bounces through a scene, while ray-traced ambient occlusion improves the shading where surfaces meet and where objects block nearby light. In practice, interiors, shaded streets, foliage, walls and characters can have more convincing indirect light and contact depth. The effect is an image-quality preference, not a separate story mode or gameplay rule: quests, combat systems and world content are the same.
Does Performance look worse?
It can look less refined in a paused comparison because dynamic resolution and the non-ray-traced lighting path give the renderer more room to maintain its faster cadence. During play, motion clarity often makes Performance appear cleaner because camera pans are less juddery. The perceived difference depends on viewing distance, screen size, scene lighting and whether your display is refreshing at 60 Hz or higher. There is no universal winner for image quality; one mode spends its budget on temporal responsiveness and the other spends more of it on lighting.

Use these decision axes instead of a one-size-fits-all rule
- Input response: Choose the faster target if precise dodges, parries, aiming or frequent camera turns are your priority.
- Lighting atmosphere: Choose Ray Tracing on the 2022 build if indirect light, contact shadows and mood matter more than motion fluidity.
- Image reconstruction: Both modes use dynamic resolution on base PS5 and Series X, so neither is a permanently fixed-resolution setting.
- Console capability: Series S offers Performance and Quality, not ray tracing; PS5 Pro and the 2026 Remastered PS5 build change the old trade-off.
- Display support: A VRR-capable 120 Hz television or monitor can smooth fluctuations and unlock higher output in supported modes, but it cannot turn a 30 FPS target into 60 FPS.
- Version: Confirm whether you are using the 2022 build or 2026 Remastered before applying advice from another player.
Recommendations by platform
Base PS5 with the 2022 build
Start with Performance if you are unsure. The faster target benefits exploration, horseback riding and every combat encounter, and it is the least disruptive choice for a first playthrough. Switch to Ray Tracing when you are deliberately taking in architecture, forests, interiors or nighttime scenes and can accept the slower presentation. A useful approach is to play a representative combat encounter and then a dimly lit interior in each mode; judge the response and lighting on your own display rather than relying on a screenshot.
If your television has VRR, enable it in the console and television menus before testing. VRR can reduce visible judder when the rendered frame rate moves around its target, but it does not remove the fundamental 30-versus-60 design choice of the 2022 modes.
Xbox Series X with the 2022 build
The decision is equivalent to base PS5: Performance is the practical default for active play, while Ray Tracing is for players who knowingly trade response for enhanced lighting. Use the same test—one combat sequence, one traversal segment and one dark or enclosed location—because the best choice is governed by your sensitivity to latency and motion, not by the console’s brand.
Xbox Series S
There is no ray-tracing option on Series S. Select Performance for the 60 FPS target and more immediate control, or Quality for higher resolution and image fidelity at a 30 FPS target. Quality is not a hidden ray-tracing mode; it is the Series S’s visual-fidelity alternative. If you are comparing settings with a Series X or PS5 owner, make sure you are comparing Performance with Performance or Quality with Quality, rather than assuming the names describe identical rendering features across consoles.

PS5 with the September 2026 Remastered version
The old recommendation needs updating. CD PROJEKT RED says Ray Tracing Mode now brings enhanced lighting while targeting 60 FPS. Performance Mode also targets 60 FPS, but offers a higher-resolution image and can reach up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. Choose Ray Tracing if the lighting upgrade is your priority; choose Performance if you sit close to a large high-resolution screen or have VRR and want the headroom for a higher refresh rate.
The phrase “up to 90 FPS” describes a ceiling under supported conditions, not a constant rate in every scene. You need a display that can accept the relevant high-refresh signal and a compatible HDMI connection. Without VRR, the extra headroom does not provide the same smoothness benefit.
PS5 Pro with the 2026 Remastered version
PS5 Pro is the clearest case for choosing Ray Tracing without accepting the 2022 compromise: the official description specifies 60 FPS ray tracing with PSSR. Performance remains a 60 FPS higher-resolution option and can use VRR. Select Ray Tracing when enhanced lighting is valuable to you; select Performance when you prefer the sharper higher-resolution presentation or want to reserve VRR behavior for that mode. PSSR is Sony’s reconstruction feature for the Pro hardware, so do not assume the same result on a base PS5.
What PC players should do
PC does not map cleanly to the console labels. CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance measures ray-tracing configurations with DLSS, FSR or XeSS set to Auto and warns that expected FPS can fluctuate with the scene, configuration, settings and output resolution. A preset name therefore cannot guarantee a fixed number on your system.
Build a repeatable test
- Set the output resolution you actually intend to use, rather than testing at a lower resolution and extrapolating.
- Choose your upscaler—DLSS, FSR or XeSS—then leave it on the same quality setting while comparing modes.
- Visit one outdoor location, one dense settlement and one interior. These different workloads reveal whether your GPU or CPU is the limiting factor.
- Record the frame-rate range and the moments when camera movement feels uneven. A stable-feeling 55–70 FPS experience may suit you better than a higher average with pronounced drops.
- Adjust ray-tracing effects, crowd density, foliage, shadows and volumetric settings one at a time. Do not change several variables and then attribute the result to the preset.
If your frame rate is inconsistent, lower the output resolution or reconstruction quality before deciding that ray tracing itself is unusable. Conversely, if your GPU has ample headroom but the game still stutters in crowded areas, reducing CPU-heavy settings may help more than removing a lighting effect. The correct PC choice is the set of options that gives your hardware a consistent frame-time pattern at your chosen resolution.

Sony notes that some enhanced-frame-rate features require a compatible television or monitor using an HDMI 2.1 cable. Check all three parts of the chain: the console output setting, the display’s HDMI port and the cable. A 120 Hz panel by itself does not guarantee that every HDMI input supports the required bandwidth or VRR range.
Set up a compatible display
- Connect the PS5 to the display’s HDMI 2.1 input with an HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Enable 120 Hz output and VRR in the console’s Screen and Video settings when those options are available.
- Turn on the display’s game mode and its own VRR or adaptive-sync setting.
- Launch The Witcher 3, select the desired graphics mode, and verify that the display reports the expected refresh behavior.
- If the image blanks, flickers or repeatedly switches modes, test another HDMI port or cable and temporarily disable 120 Hz to isolate the connection problem.
VRR matches the display’s refresh timing to the console’s rendered output within the display’s supported range. It can make a fluctuating frame rate look smoother, but it cannot make a 30 FPS render produce 60 distinct frames per second. In the 2026 Remastered PS5 Performance mode, VRR is also the condition attached to the “up to 90 FPS” statement.

How to change the mode safely
- Pause the game and open Options.
- Open the Display or Graphics page; the label can vary by platform and build.
- Find Graphics Mode and select Performance, Ray Tracing or Quality, depending on the available choices for your hardware.
- Apply the setting and return to gameplay. Test movement, combat and a lighting-heavy scene before deciding whether to keep it.
- If the selection is missing, confirm that the next-generation or Remastered build is installed and that your console is not running an incompatible legacy version.
Changing a graphics mode does not alter save files, quests or trophies. The setting affects rendering and may require a brief reload or scene transition before its full effect is visible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Applying 2022 advice to the 2026 Remastered release
“Ray tracing means 30 FPS” is accurate for the 2022 base-console description, not for the 2026 Remastered PS5 version. Check the release version first; otherwise you may give up a 60 FPS ray-traced option that your hardware now supports.
Assuming VRR fixes every performance issue
VRR can hide some cadence variation, but it cannot compensate for severe frame-time spikes, input latency caused elsewhere in the chain or a mode designed around 30 FPS. Treat it as a smoothing aid, not a performance upgrade.
Comparing screenshots instead of motion
A still image emphasizes lighting and resolution while hiding camera judder. Evaluate a turning camera, a fast ride and an actual fight, then inspect a dark interior for the lighting differences. Use the same display settings for both tests.
Assuming Series S has a reduced ray-tracing mode
Series S has no ray-tracing features in the cited next-generation configuration. Its choice is Performance versus Quality, with the latter prioritizing fidelity at the slower target.

Treating official targets as laboratory guarantees
The published 30, 60 and up-to-90 figures are targets or maximums under the stated platform and display conditions. Scene complexity, reconstruction behavior and hardware configuration can produce variation, especially on PC.
A quick decision checklist
- Are you on the 2022 build or the September 2026 Remastered release?
- Is the console base PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S?
- Do you notice input delay and camera judder more than differences in indirect lighting?
- Does your display support VRR and the required HDMI 2.1 connection?
- On PC, have you tested your real resolution, upscaler and typical scenes rather than trusting a preset label?
If the answers point to responsiveness, use Performance. If they point to lighting atmosphere and you are on hardware that offers the desired ray-tracing target, use Ray Tracing. On Series S, make the same choice between responsiveness and fidelity using Performance and Quality. Revisit the decision after changing your display or installing the 2026 Remastered release, because those changes alter the trade-off.
