PSA is the default to consider when resale is the priority; CGC is a lower-fee option for a personal collection or budget submission, while Beckett stands out if you value visible subgrades and the possibility—not the promise—of a Black Label. The right choice depends on the exact card, your likely grade, current service availability, and what comparable copies have actually sold for. This snapshot covers direct U.S. submissions and fees checked October 30, 2026; availability and estimates can change.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Listed price / availability | Estimated turnaround | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | Owners considering resale who want a widely used comparison point in the cited sales analysis | Top standard grade: Gem Mint 10 | Standard: $59.99 per card, maximum insured value $1,000. Value services: temporarily paused. | Standard: 70–80 business days | Oct 2026 |
| CGC Cards | Budget submissions or cards being kept in a personal collection | Distinct Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10 designations | Bulk: $17 per card, 25-card minimum, $500 maximum value; Economy: $20, $1,000 maximum; Standard: $55, $3,000 maximum. | Bulk: 150; Economy: 90; Standard: 10 working days | Oct 2026 |
| Beckett (BGS) | Collectors who want four visible subgrades or especially value the possibility of a Black Label | Four subgrades; Black Label for perfect 10s | Express: $79.95 per card, marked Submit Now. Base and Standard: Sold Out; Priority: Sold Out. | Express: 15 business days | Oct 2026 |
Fees and turnaround estimates above are the graders’ listed U.S. figures, not all-in totals or guaranteed delivery dates. CGC calls its value limits fair market value; PSA describes a maximum insured value, so those limits should not be treated as identical terms. Verify current prices, eligibility and open tiers on the graders’ live submission pages before sending a card. PSA’s U.S. service page lists Standard at 70–80 business days; some older comparison coverage gives a different estimate. PSA’s current service page is the source for its listed figure.

Is PSA or CGC better for Pokémon cards?
Neither is best for every card: PSA is a sensible starting point when resale matters, while CGC can make more sense when its lower listed fee or grading labels suit your goal. A fee comparison alone does not decide the question; compare the grade definitions, the exact card’s completed sales and what it will cost to submit.
Choose around the outcome you want
- You expect to sell: Start by checking sold examples for the same Pokémon card, language, variant and grade. PSA is the familiar reference point in the cited Pokémon-specific analysis, but that does not mean every PSA-graded copy sells for more than every alternative label.
- You want a keepsake or an affordable submission: Compare CGC’s listed fee with the card’s value to you and the separate costs of shipping. A less expensive grading tier can still cost more than makes sense for an inexpensive card.
- You care about subgrades or the Black Label aesthetic: Beckett displays four condition subgrades and offers the possibility of a Black Label for perfect 10s. Consider that feature on its own merits, not as an expected result.
A vintage card and a modern, inexpensive card can lead to different choices. For a valuable vintage card intended for sale, the relevant question is what buyers paid for that specific card and grade, not which grader has the lowest entry fee. For a modern card kept for personal reasons, the label, presentation and cost may matter more than resale comparisons.

Are PSA, CGC and Beckett 10s equivalent?
No. A PSA Gem Mint 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, CGC Pristine 10 and Beckett Black Label 10 are different designations with different published criteria. Treating every label with the number 10 as interchangeable can lead to a misleading price comparison.
PSA Gem Mint 10
PSA describes its Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card.” Its published standards allow approximate centering tolerance no worse than 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. PSA also acknowledges that eye appeal involves a subjective component. The standards are available on PSA’s grading standards page.

CGC Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10
CGC separates Gem Mint 10 from Pristine 10. Its published centering tolerance for Gem Mint 10 is approximately 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse; Pristine 10 has a 50/50 centering standard and a special label. The Pristine designation is therefore not simply another name for CGC Gem Mint 10.
Beckett grades and Black Label
Beckett evaluates centering, corners, edges and surface, and shows the four subgrades on the label. Its grading scale includes Gem Mint 9.5 and Pristine 10. The Black Label is reserved for perfect 10s; the published centering criterion is 50/50 on the front and at least 55/45 on the back. A BGS 10 should not automatically be described as a Black Label, and a BGS 9.5 should not be treated as equivalent to another company’s 10.

These distinctions matter when you compare asking prices or completed sales. A high-grade label is not enough by itself: record the grader and exact designation alongside the card’s name, language and variant before drawing a price comparison.
How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card?
For the listed U.S. tiers in this October 2026 snapshot, fees range from $17 per card for CGC Bulk to $79.95 for Beckett Express. Those are grading fees, not the complete cost of submitting and selling a card; shipping and applicable extras are separate considerations.

PSA: Standard is the available tier to compare here
PSA lists Standard at $59.99 per card with a maximum insured value of $1,000 and an estimated 70–80 business-day turnaround. The page also shows Value at $39.99 but identifies Value services as temporarily paused. Do not treat that displayed Value price as a tier you can book while it is paused. PSA’s Express tier is listed at $199 and includes Grader Notes; availability should be checked directly before submission.
CGC: three listed options with different limits
CGC’s direct-submission fee page lists Bulk at $17 per card, with a 25-card minimum and a $500 maximum value; Economy at $20 per card, with a $1,000 maximum; and Standard at $55 per card, with a $3,000 maximum. Their estimated turnarounds are 150, 90 and 10 working days, respectively. The lower Bulk fee is relevant only if the submission meets its minimum and value conditions. CGC uses fair market value for these limits.

Beckett: distinguish an open tier from a displayed price
Beckett lists Express at $79.95 per card with a 15-business-day estimate and marks it Submit Now. Base and Standard are marked Sold Out, as is Priority. A price displayed for a sold-out tier is not evidence that the service can currently be selected.
Turnaround terminology and estimates differ by company, and none should be read as a promise or necessarily as a door-to-door shipping window. CGC expressly states, “Turnaround times are estimates only and are NOT guaranteed.” Check the current tier and terms close to the time you submit.

For a card you may sell, compare likely proceeds with the costs and delay involved. Account for the grading fee, outbound and return shipping, any applicable extras, selling expenses, and the value of waiting. If you have a purchase basis, include it as well. Then compare that result with selling the card ungraded or keeping it. A low grading fee does not by itself make a submission profitable, and a higher fee does not establish that a particular label will bring a higher sale price.
What do Pokémon card resale comparisons actually show?
Folio’s Pokémon-specific analysis offers a useful snapshot, not a universal price list. It compared median completed-sale prices for the same cards, requiring at least three completed sales per compared label, using data as of October 5, 2026.

| Label comparison | Reported median completed-sale price ratio | What the figure does—and does not—say |
|---|---|---|
| CGC Gem Mint 10 versus PSA 10 | 0.44× | Folio’s median ratio for qualifying same-card comparisons; not a guaranteed discount for every card. |
| BGS 9.5 versus PSA 10 | 0.60× | Folio’s median ratio for qualifying same-card comparisons; the labels are not equivalent grades. |
| BGS Pristine 10 versus PSA 10 | 1.53× across 96 qualifying cards | Folio’s reported median ratio for this selected sample; it does not predict that a submitted card will earn Pristine 10. |
Folio also reported that Beckett awarded a 10 to a median 0.6% of copies in its qualifying population-report comparisons. That is a median for a selected set, not the probability that any individual card will receive a 10. Nor does the unusually strong BGS Pristine comparison establish that every Black Label sells for that multiple. Card selection, label, sample size and sale date all matter. See Folio’s Pokémon grading comparison for its method and results.
For an individual card, check completed sales rather than relying on listings or a broad average. Match the Pokémon, card number, language, set or variant, grade and specific top-label designation as closely as possible. A PSA 10 and CGC Pristine 10 are not interchangeable rows in a comparison simply because both display “10.” If there are few matching completed sales, treat the comparison as uncertain rather than filling the gap with a population count.

It is worth considering if the card’s likely sale proceeds or personal value justify the fee, shipping, waiting time and possibility of a grade below your expectation. Make the decision using plausible outcomes for the exact card rather than assuming it will receive a top grade.

- Identify the exact card. Confirm the Pokémon, card number, set, language and variant. Small differences can make a seemingly similar sale an unreliable comparison.
- Inspect condition without treating a visual estimate as a promised grade. Look at centering, corners, edges, surface and eye appeal—the attributes reflected in the graders’ criteria. A loupe can help with inspection, but no tool proves what grade a company will assign.
- Find completed sales at plausible grades. Compare the exact card at more than one realistic grade when sales are available. Do not use a top-grade sale as the sole estimate for a card whose condition is uncertain.
- Calculate net outcomes. Subtract grading, shipping, applicable extras and selling costs from the likely proceeds; include purchase basis if relevant and account for the value of waiting.
- Compare with the alternatives. Decide whether to sell raw, keep the card ungraded, or submit it. For a keepsake, personal preference may be a valid reason to grade even when the sale calculation is not attractive.
Population alone cannot settle the decision. A low reported population does not prove a card is valuable, and a high population does not establish that it has no value. Use population information as context only, alongside actual completed sales and the characteristics of the card you own.
How should I protect a card for submission?
Follow the selected grader’s own shipping instructions; packing guidance can vary. CGC’s published instructions call for a protective card sleeve, then a semi-rigid sleeve, followed by cardboard larger than the cards, cushioning and a sturdy box.
- Put the card in a protective sleeve, then place it in a semi-rigid holder.
- Use cardboard larger than the card or cards to protect the submission. Do not bind the stack or pack it so tightly that pressure could damage the cards.
- Add cushioning and use a sturdy box. Keep the cards protected from movement without squeezing them.
- Before shipping, confirm the chosen service’s current submission and packing instructions, including its requirements for the order you are sending.
This sequence is CGC-specific; use CGC’s card-shipping instructions for its details. Proper packing reduces avoidable transit risk, but it does not change the card’s assigned grade or guarantee a result.
Which grader should you choose?
Choose based on the card and what you want from grading, not a universal ranking. For resale, check PSA and compare completed sales for the exact card and designation; for a lower listed fee or a personal collection, assess CGC’s options and value limits; for visible subgrades or the appeal of a possible Black Label, consider Beckett while accounting for the tiers currently open. In every case, treat the grade, sale price and completion date as uncertain until the grader has processed the card and a buyer has paid for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PSA Standard include photos of the graded card?
PSA’s U.S. trading-card grading page lists front- and back-side standard imaging. Its listed $199 Express service includes Grader Notes; confirm current service details on PSA’s page before submitting.
Why can’t I use PSA’s listed $39.99 Value price in my cost estimate?
The October 2026 U.S. page displays that price while marking Value services temporarily paused. A displayed fee is not the same as an available submission tier, so check the live page when you are ready to submit.
Can a population report tell me whether a Pokémon card is rare?
A population report records graded-copy counts, not every copy that exists. CGC specifically cautions that its population counts are not indicators of value or rarity, so use them as limited context rather than a standalone price or scarcity measure.
