1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe smoothest experience on the ROG Xbox Ally X comes from a realistic frame-rate target, consistent frame times, and a render-resolution/upscaling combination suited to each game. Start at 1080p, select Performance or Turbo according to whether you are on battery or AC power, then lower internal resolution and the most expensive effects before sacrificing texture quality.
What the ROG Xbox Ally X can realistically deliver
The ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) combines an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, AMD Radeon graphics, 24GB of memory, a 1080p display and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. ASUS says the storage can be expanded with an off-the-shelf compatible drive, but adding storage does not increase graphics performance.

A 1080p panel does not mean every demanding game should be run at native 1080p with a high preset. ASUS’s published comparison used default in-game graphics settings in Performance mode and recorded the following results:
| Game | Published result | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Doom: The Dark Ages | 36 FPS | ASUS test result at 1080p, Performance mode |
| Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | 56 FPS | ASUS test result at 1080p, Performance mode |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 33 FPS | ASUS test result at 1080p, Performance mode |
These are ASUS’s 2025 product-page measurements, not guarantees for every patch, driver, area of a game or graphics preset. They show why a single “maximum” profile is a poor strategy: one title may approach 60 FPS while another needs a lower internal resolution or more conservative effects to remain comfortably above 30 FPS.

Choose a frame-rate target before changing quality
Decide what “smooth” means for the particular game, then tune toward a stable cap. A locked 30 FPS with even frame delivery generally feels better than a counter that swings between 40 and 60 FPS. If a game can sustain 60 FPS, cap it at 60 rather than allowing unstable peaks that produce uneven frame times and extra power use.
When to choose 30 FPS
- Use a 30 FPS target for demanding open-world games, heavy ray-traced scenes or titles that repeatedly dip below 40 FPS at higher targets.
- Prefer a firm 30 FPS cap over an uncapped result that oscillates around the low-to-mid 30s.
- Check camera pans, combat and busy hubs, not only an empty corridor; the slowest repeatable scene determines whether the cap is credible.
When to choose 40 or 45 FPS
- A 40 or 45 FPS cap can be a useful middle ground when the game is clearly faster than 30 but cannot hold 60.
- Use it only if frame times remain consistent. A nominally higher cap that is missed constantly will feel less fluid than 30 FPS.
- Compare the result while plugged in and on battery; the same target may require different settings.
When to choose 60 FPS
- Use 60 FPS for lighter games, competitive titles and any demanding game that can hold it in the areas you actually play.
- Cap at 60 when the display and game can sustain that rate. Chasing uncapped peaks can increase heat and fan noise without improving control response during dips.
Use the game’s benchmark, a repeatable route or the same busy scene after every change. Average FPS alone is not enough: watch for stutter, sudden frame-time spikes and drops below your chosen floor.
Select the power mode for how you are playing
Power mode changes the performance envelope before an in-game slider is touched. ASUS’s comparison methodology used Turbo at 35W on AC power and Performance at 17W on battery. Those are test conditions, not a promise that every unit or title will behave identically.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Situation | Starting mode | Reason | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plugged in, maximum performance | Turbo (35W in ASUS’s AC comparison) | Provides the highest tested power budget for demanding games. | Temperature, fan noise and whether the extra watts actually raise the sustained frame rate. |
| Battery gaming | Performance (17W in ASUS’s battery comparison) | Balances playability and battery consumption better than the highest-power mode. | Battery drain, clock fluctuations and dips after the system warms up. |
| Per-game automatic behavior | Xbox Default Game Profile | Can apply a TDP limit and FPS limit for each title, including a minimum 30 FPS-oriented balance between performance and battery life. | Whether the selected profile holds its cap in demanding scenes. |
Turbo is worth using when the Ally X is connected to AC power and your priority is performance. On battery, start with Performance or a Default Game Profile, then raise or lower the target after checking sustained play rather than a short opening sequence. Battery state, temperature, game patch and driver can all alter the result.

Set resolution and upscaling in the right order
Keep the panel output at 1080p when possible, but do not confuse output resolution with the number of pixels the GPU renders internally. A demanding game can display a 1080p image while rendering at a lower internal resolution and reconstructing it with an upscaler.
- Begin with 1080p output and your chosen frame-rate cap. This keeps the user interface and final image matched to the panel.
- Lower internal render resolution or the game’s resolution scale when the target is missed. Make a small change, then test the same scene.
- Enable one super-resolution method. Compare its Quality, Balanced or Performance-style options if the game provides them, selecting the highest image-quality mode that holds your cap.
- Only then reduce individual effects. Start with ray tracing, global illumination, shadows, volumetrics, crowd density and view distance, which often consume more GPU time than textures.
- Recheck clarity in motion. Look for shimmering foliage, ghosting, ringing around text and smeared fine detail. A higher FPS number is not an improvement if the image is distracting.
Lower internal resolution plus a suitable upscaler is often a better first move than setting every option to Low. Texture quality can usually remain higher when the 24GB memory pool is not under pressure; reducing textures first may make the game look worse without fixing the main GPU bottleneck.
Understand FSR, RSR, Auto SR and AFMF
Microsoft lists AMD FSR Upscaling, Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), Auto SR, FSR Frame Generation and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) as available technologies on the platform. They do different jobs, and stacking multiple reconstruction or frame-generation systems can create conflicts or artifacts.
Recommended Free Tools
| Technology | Primary role | Best place to start | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD FSR Upscaling | Reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render inside a supported game. | Use when the game offers FSR and you can select a quality mode. | Quality varies by implementation; fine detail and motion behavior differ by title. |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | Driver-level upscaling for games that do not provide an in-game super-resolution option. | Use as the single upscaling path when a title lacks a suitable built-in method. | Do not run it together with another active in-game upscaler. |
| Auto SR | Microsoft’s system-level upscaling intended to improve sharpness and smoothness from lower-resolution frames. | Use only where supported and, for the Ally X, when the current preview is available. | Requires current device and Microsoft Store components; availability is limited to the stated preview program. |
| AFMF | Generates additional frames from rendered frames to increase perceived fluidity. | Consider after the game has a stable base frame rate and your chosen super-resolution path is working. | Generated frames do not replace a weak base rate and can add latency or visual artifacts. |
| FSR Frame Generation | Game-integrated frame generation where supported. | Use instead of AFMF, not alongside it, unless a specific title documents a compatible combination. | Results and latency depend on the game’s implementation and base FPS. |
Microsoft’s below-60-FPS guidance
Microsoft recommends enabling super resolution for games running below 60 FPS. If a title remains below 60 FPS with super resolution enabled, its guidance is to use Auto SR plus AFMF while disabling other super-resolution and frame-generation options. In practical terms, select one reconstruction route and one frame-generation route; do not leave FSR, RSR, Auto SR, FSR Frame Generation and AFMF all active.

Frame generation works best when the underlying game already delivers a reasonably consistent base rate. If the base frames arrive unevenly, generated frames can make motion look smoother in simple scenes while leaving hitches, input delay or doubled edges during fast movement. Test aiming, camera turns and menus, not just a static benchmark.
Auto SR for docked play
Microsoft says Auto SR is available in preview to Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X for docked play. You can check and control it in the Xbox Game Bar Display Widget. The Ally X and Microsoft Store components must be up to date before the option appears or behaves correctly.
Auto SR is designed to upscale lower-resolution frames for a sharper, smoother image on a larger screen. Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 5 example reports 60 FPS at 1080p with High settings on the internal display. The same article describes a docked Ultra-settings example with a 30% FPS improvement over native 1440p at similar visual quality. Those are Microsoft’s stated examples under its own conditions, not a universal docked-performance guarantee.

| Setting group | Why it is expensive | Typical first adjustment | Visual trade-off to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray tracing | Adds extra lighting, reflection or shadow calculations. | Disable it or use the lowest ray-tracing preset. | Reflections, indirect light and shadow realism change substantially. |
| Global illumination | Calculates bounced or indirect light across a scene. | Move from Ultra/High to Medium or Low. | Interior lighting and depth can look flatter. |
| Shadows | High resolution and long-distance shadow maps consume GPU time. | Reduce quality and shadow distance before lowering textures. | Edges become softer and distant shadows disappear sooner. |
| Volumetrics | Fog, smoke, clouds and light shafts require expensive overdraw. | Lower volumetric quality or fog resolution. | Atmospheric effects lose density or fine detail. |
| Crowd density | Increases animation, simulation and draw-call work, especially in cities. | Reduce crowd or traffic density. | Worlds feel less populated; gameplay logic may be unaffected. |
| View distance | Keeps more geometry and detail active farther from the camera. | Lower distance modestly rather than using the minimum. | Objects and terrain details appear later. |
| Textures | Primarily consume memory and storage bandwidth rather than raw shader time. | Keep High if memory use is stable; lower only for streaming stutter or memory pressure. | Surface detail and material sharpness decline. |
After each adjustment, replay the same demanding section. If FPS barely changes after lowering a setting, restore it and test another bottleneck. If stutter appears while average FPS looks adequate, inspect texture streaming, crowd simulation and frame-time graphs rather than blindly lowering every slider.
Use per-game profiles instead of one global preset
Games vary too much for one Ally X profile to fit all of them. Xbox Default Game Profiles are intended to set TDP and FPS limits per game, balancing performance and battery life beyond what an individual title’s graphics menu can do. Create a profile around the target you selected, then keep the in-game cap and profile cap consistent so two limiters do not fight each other.
Profile design examples
- Heavy single-player game: Performance mode on battery, a stable 30 or 40 FPS cap, lower internal resolution with one upscaler, and reduced ray tracing, volumetrics and shadows.
- Well-optimized action game: Performance mode first, then 60 FPS if the same target holds in combat and traversal; retain higher textures if memory remains comfortable.
- Plugged-in showcase session: Turbo mode, native or near-native internal resolution, and a cap the game can sustain. Increase effects one group at a time and watch temperatures and frame pacing.
- Competitive title: Disable expensive visual effects, select a latency-conscious cap and avoid frame generation if its added processing delay outweighs the smoother animation.
Keep separate handheld and docked expectations. A larger external display may use 1440p or another output mode, increasing the work required even when the game settings look unchanged.
How to check smoothness correctly
- Warm up the system. Play long enough for clocks, temperature and fan behavior to settle; a one-minute launch test can overstate sustained performance.
- Record a repeatable route. Use the built-in benchmark or repeat the same combat encounter, city block or traversal segment.
- Check the worst moments. Note the lowest sustained rate and visible frame-time spikes, not only the headline average.
- Apply one change. Alter resolution, an upscaler, power mode or one quality group, then repeat the route.
- Evaluate controls and artifacts. With frame generation enabled, test camera pans, aiming and rapid movement for latency, ghosting or double images.
- Save the result per game. Record mode, cap, internal resolution, upscaler and major effects so a driver or patch change can be diagnosed later.
Common problems and fixes
The game will not hold its cap
Lower internal resolution first, then reduce ray tracing, global illumination, shadows, volumetrics, crowd density or view distance. Confirm the selected power mode and make sure a battery profile has not imposed a lower TDP than expected.

FPS is high but motion feels uneven
Set a realistic in-game or profile FPS limit, check frame-time behavior and avoid an uncapped rate that repeatedly crosses your target. A stable lower cap is preferable to fluctuating peaks.
The image is blurry or shimmering
Move the upscaler from a more aggressive mode toward Quality, raise internal resolution if performance allows, and compare one reconstruction method at a time. Disable any second driver-level or game-level upscaler.
Frame generation looks wrong
Verify that the base frame rate is stable, then disable either AFMF or FSR Frame Generation so only one frame-generation system remains. Test fast camera movement and UI elements; if artifacts or latency remain objectionable, return to a lower but natively rendered cap.
Auto SR is missing when docked
Auto SR on this device is described as an Xbox Insider preview feature for docked play. Update the Ally X and Microsoft Store components, then check the Xbox Game Bar Display Widget. If the option still is not offered, the current preview eligibility or display configuration may not support it.
Battery performance changes during a session
Battery charge, temperature, background activity and the selected 17W-style Performance behavior can alter sustained clocks. Recheck the profile and cap after the system reaches its normal operating temperature rather than judging from the first few minutes.
A repeatable tuning recipe
- Choose 30, 40/45 or 60 FPS based on what the game can sustain in its hardest scenes.
- Select Turbo while plugged in if maximum performance is the priority; use Performance or a Default Game Profile on battery.
- Leave the output at 1080p, then lower internal render resolution when the target is missed.
- Enable exactly one super-resolution path: the game’s FSR, RSR, Auto SR where supported, or another documented option.
- Reduce ray tracing, global illumination, shadows, volumetrics, crowd density and view distance before lowering textures unnecessarily.
- Add frame generation only after the base rate is stable, choosing AFMF or FSR Frame Generation rather than both.
- Set an FPS cap in the game or profile and verify frame pacing in a repeatable demanding scene.
- Save separate settings for battery, AC and docked play, because power budget and output resolution change the result.
How to compare two profiles
When deciding between two settings sets, compare the same factors rather than relying on a single FPS counter:
- Target and frame-time stability: Does each profile hold its cap in the hardest section?
- Internal resolution and upscaler quality: Which image remains clearer in motion at the same output resolution?
- Power draw and expected battery life: Is the extra performance worth the additional TDP on this session?
- Visual cost: Are reductions in shadows, ray tracing or volumetrics noticeable during actual play?
- Latency and artifacts: Does frame generation improve perceived fluidity without harming control response or introducing distracting errors?
There is no universal “best” preset for the ROG Xbox Ally X. The practical choice is the profile that keeps your selected frame-rate floor and frame pacing while preserving the visual features you notice most.
