The right gaming furniture is sized around the equipment you will actually install, not the diagonal number printed on a TV box or the “up to 65-inch TV” label on a cabinet. Measure the television, console in its approved orientation, stands or feet, power supplies, cable bends, accessory clearance and the furniture’s unobstructed interior space. Then choose a base wider than the screen, place the screen center near seated eye level, and verify ventilation, plug access, stability and walking clearance.
Start with a complete installed-setup measurement
A TV can fit on a cabinet while the gaming setup still fails: a side vent may touch a divider, a power brick may not fit behind the console, or a connector may need more bend space than the shelf provides. Measure the setup as it will operate, including the parts that are easy to overlook.

| Item | What to measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wall and room | Available wall width, wall height, trim, baseboards, outlets, walkway and door clearance | Determines whether a simple console, a larger entertainment center or a wall-mounted arrangement is realistic. |
| Television | Actual straight-across width, height, depth, stand footprint, connector locations and planned wall gap | Diagonal size does not tell you the width or the clearance needed behind the set. |
| Console | Width, height and depth with the manufacturer-approved stand or feet installed; vent locations; power-connector direction; port locations | Confirms that the console fits in the usable compartment without blocking cooling or access. |
| Accessories | Soundbar, streaming box, router, external drive, charging dock, controllers, headsets and power supplies | Prevents the console shelf from becoming an overcrowded power-and-cable pile. |
| Furniture interior | Clear width, height and depth after side panels, dividers, hinges, doors and backboards; supported load; rear opening; removal path | Advertised outside dimensions are not the space available to your equipment. |
| Seating | Eye height in your usual seat, sofa or chair position, viewing distance and likely viewing angle | Sets the screen height and helps avoid glare or an uncomfortable neck angle. |
Record clear dimensions, not marketing dimensions
Measure between the surfaces that will actually surround the console. A cabinet listed as 20 inches deep may lose several inches to a thick backboard, a door, hinges or a cable channel. Note the narrowest point, not just the largest opening. If a console must slide out for servicing, measure the path from the shelf to the front edge with the door fully open.
Allow for cable bends and power supplies
Measure from each port to the point where its cable can turn naturally. HDMI, network and power connectors should not be forced against a back panel. Include the dimensions of external power bricks, surge protectors and right-angle or straight plugs. A shelf that fits the console body but leaves no room to unplug it is not a usable fit.

Choose a bench wider than the TV
The safest general rule is to make the TV bench or base cabinet wider than the screen’s actual width. IKEA’s 2026 buying guide recommends a TV bench wider than the TV screen. Ethan Allen likewise says the base cabinet should be a few inches wider than the TV’s actual width, and wider still if you want décor or other items on top.
Do not select a bench from the TV’s diagonal label alone. A 55-, 65- or 75-inch television can have different bezel sizes and aspect-ratio designs, so its straight-across width varies by model. Measure your television and compare that number with the bench’s finished top width. Leave room on both sides rather than balancing the screen exactly on the edges.
Use the top surface deliberately
Decide what belongs beside the screen before buying. A soundbar, center speaker, remote holder or charging dock needs its own footprint. Keep vents and the television’s controls reachable. If the furniture top will carry a heavy display, confirm its supported load and follow the television maker’s stand requirements.

Understand published width and height ranges
IKEA reports TV-bench widths from 35 to 94.5 inches and heights from 15 to 25 inches in its 2026 product range. Those are the dimensions represented in that retailer’s range, not universal requirements for every TV or room. Your measured screen width, seated eye level, viewing distance and equipment clearances should determine the choice.
Set the screen height from the sofa, not from the wall
IKEA’s guidance is to place the center of the TV at eye level when you sit in your usual seat, helping avoid neck strain. Sit where you normally play, look straight ahead and measure your eye height. Use that point as the target for the screen center, then account for the TV’s total height and its stand or wall bracket.
Check glare and sight lines
Ethan Allen recommends a location that minimizes glare from windows and overhead lights, is easy to see from seating and is convenient to electrical outlets. Test the screen from the sofa at daytime and evening angles before committing to a cabinet or wall mount. A perfect furniture fit is still a poor setup if players must turn their heads or fight reflections.

Match the furniture format to the room
| Format | Best when | Advantages | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-shelf TV stand | You prioritize airflow, visible status lights, remote access and easy equipment changes. | Simple to inspect and service; ports and power buttons remain visible. | Plan cable routing and regular dust cleaning because devices stay exposed. |
| Ventilated media cabinet | You want concealed equipment and accessory storage. | Hides cords and electronics while providing organized storage. | Verify an open or properly vented back, door clearance around vents and a safe pull-out path. |
| Mixed open and closed storage | You want consoles accessible but cases, remotes and spare cables hidden. | Open shelves can hold heat-producing equipment; drawers or doors tidy the rest. | Keep enclosed sections for items that do not need airflow and confirm every electronic compartment’s ventilation. |
| Modular entertainment center | The wall is broad and the household needs towers, shelves or several storage zones. | Offers expansion room and separates equipment, games and décor. | Measure the complete wall, walkways and outlet locations; compare wood doors, glass doors and open shelves with equipment requirements. |
| Wall-mounted TV with low bench | Floor space is limited or a bulky stand would obstruct circulation. | Frees floor area while preserving low storage for consoles and accessories. | Confirm wall construction, bracket rating, cable route, console ventilation and a safe viewing height. |
Make console ventilation a fit requirement
Furniture should provide a well-ventilated home for the television, consoles and other electronics while keeping connections organized. Ethan Allen describes that as a core purpose of a media cabinet, but the specific console and TV manuals control the placement requirements. Follow those manuals for minimum clearances and approved orientations.

Open shelves are easiest to inspect: you can see status lights, reach the power button, dust the vents and change cables without moving a door. They are useful when you frequently swap consoles or accessories. Their trade-off is visible hardware and more dust, so leave enough room to clean around vents.
Enclosed compartments
Doors do not automatically make a cabinet safe for electronics. Confirm that the rear is open or has substantial ventilation, that side and top vents are not pressed against panels, and that doors can open without striking plugs. A small cable hole only routes a wire; it does not prove that hot air can escape. If the console must be pulled forward for maintenance, test that movement with every cable connected.
Mixed storage
Place consoles, routers and other heat-producing devices in open sections. Use drawers or closed cupboards for game cases, spare cords, controllers, headsets and cleaning supplies. This arrangement keeps the serviceable equipment accessible while reducing visual clutter.
Plan cable routing before the furniture arrives
Cable management is part of fit, not an afterthought. Rear holes or a continuous gap help connections remain reachable and reduce visible cable clutter, but they must be large and positioned for your actual ports.
- Map every connection. List power, HDMI, network, USB, audio and antenna cables for the TV, console, soundbar, router and accessories.
- Choose the cable exit. Align rear openings with the ports and with the outlet or surge protector. Avoid routing a thick plug through a hole too small to remove it later.
- Preserve bend space. Keep cables from being sharply folded behind the console. Use shorter cables only when they still allow the console to slide out for service.
- Separate power and signal paths where practical. Secure loose runs with reusable ties or a sleeve so they do not fall behind the cabinet when a device is unplugged.
- Label both ends. Identification makes troubleshooting and console changes faster without repeatedly pulling the whole setup forward.
- Test before final placement. Power on every device, check network and audio, and confirm that plugs can be removed without moving the television.
When to add a raceway or sleeve
A cable-management sleeve or surface raceway is useful when the outlet is far from the stand, when a wall-mounted TV needs a concealed vertical run, or when several low-voltage cables cross an exposed area. It is an accessory for a demonstrated routing problem, not a substitute for correctly sized furniture openings.

Fit a gaming setup in a small living room
Start with circulation. Mark the sofa, coffee table, walkways and door swings on the floor, then reserve the wall area for the television and furniture. A compact wall usually favors a simple console with only the equipment you use daily. Put cases, spare controllers and less frequently used accessories in drawers or another nearby storage zone.
Use vertical and wall space carefully
A wall-mounted TV paired with a low storage bench can free floor area, but the bracket, wall construction and cable route must support the installation. Keep the console on a ventilated shelf rather than sealing it inside a shallow drawer. If you choose a tall or modular unit, confirm that its towers do not narrow the walkway or block an outlet.
Prioritize the equipment you actually play
In a small room, do not reserve shelf depth for every possible future device. Measure the current console, dock, soundbar and router, then leave a modest service margin. Store portable accessories in a drawer or basket so the primary shelf remains ventilated and reachable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare furniture with a practical decision framework
When two options look similar, score both against the same criteria rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Fit: Compare clear width, height and depth with the console installed, including its stand, feet and cable bends.
- Airflow: Look for open sides or back, vent cutouts and a clear path for heated air. Check door positions against side and rear vents.
- Access: Confirm reach to the power button, ports, plugs, controllers and cleaning areas, plus a route to remove the console.
- Viewing comfort: Check seated eye level, glare, viewing angle and distance from every regular seat.
- Storage: Decide whether open shelves, drawers, glass doors or wood doors suit your equipment and future expansion.
- Room scale: Measure the wall, walkways, seating arrangement and outlet location before comparing finishes.
- Safety and stability: Verify supported loads, resistance to bumps and the availability of a tip restraint.
Protect the setup from tip-over and overload
Ethan Allen calls tip-over protection important even for a small media console. Wall-mount the TV when appropriate and use a tip restraint to secure the console to the wall, following local safety guidance and the furniture manufacturer’s instructions. Keep heavy equipment low, distribute weight across supported shelves and do not exceed the stated load.
For a wall-mounted television, use a bracket rated for the display and suitable for the wall structure. Route cables so they cannot pull the screen or snag someone walking past. Recheck fasteners after installation and after moving equipment.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying for the TV diagonal
Problem: The stand is advertised for a 65-inch TV, but its top is narrower than your particular set or leaves no room for a soundbar.
Correction: Measure the television straight across and choose a wider base with the accessories included in your plan.
Using outside cabinet dimensions
Problem: The console body fits the advertised depth, but a backboard, door or hinge blocks it.
Correction: Compare the equipment with the narrowest clear interior dimensions and the full removal path.
