To choose a mobile indie game that will not crowd out your photos or exhaust your battery, check the download and installed footprints, allow for first-launch assets and updates, then assess how much rendering, networking and background work the game performs. No official source provides a universal “hours of battery” rating for indie games, so your phone’s settings and your own usage test matter more than a headline estimate.
What the size shown in a store listing actually means
Mobile games have several storage measurements, and they are not interchangeable. A listing may show the package you download, while your phone must also unpack that package, create writable data and fetch optional content.

Download size versus installed size
Apple distinguishes the two explicitly: the compressed size is the download size, while the uncompressed size is equivalent to the installed app on the device. In practical terms, a 600 MB download can occupy more than 600 MB after installation because the operating system expands the files and creates supporting data.

Why the first launch can be larger than the install
Many games do not ship every asset in the initial package. Android supports Play Asset Delivery and on-demand features, while Apple supports asset packs, on-demand resources and Background Assets. These systems can keep the first download smaller by delivering high-resolution textures, language packs, levels or other content later.
Look for wording such as “additional download required,” “download content in game” or a notice that Wi-Fi is recommended. A game that installs quickly may still need a substantial connection on its first launch. If you are choosing games for travel or a metered data plan, that later download is part of the real installation cost.
Documents, saves, patches and caches
Storage use continues after installation. Save files, downloaded chapters, screenshots, replay data, patches and temporary caches appear outside the core app package. Apple’s storage guidance separates App Size from Documents & Data so that you can see this growth over time. Caches may be purged when space is low, but you should not assume every form of game data will disappear automatically.
On an iPhone or iPad, check Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage) after installing and again after a major update. Android menu names vary by manufacturer, but the app’s storage screen normally shows the app, user data and cache as separate categories. Record the total immediately after installation if you want a meaningful baseline.
Platform limits that affect large games
Platform limits explain why developers split content into asset packs or downloads. They are not recommendations for how much free space you should keep, and they do not predict a game’s battery use.

Google Play Console summarizes the practical reason to watch these numbers: “Smaller apps download faster and have higher install success rates.” For a player, that means a compact initial download is convenient, not proof that the finished game is small.

A storage-first method for choosing a game
Use the following process before committing to a large download. It works when the store exposes both figures and remains useful when it exposes only one.

- Measure free space first. Open your phone’s storage view and note the available capacity, not the total capacity printed on the box. Leave room for the operating system, photos, messages and other apps that also need to update.
- Read the complete store listing. Check the displayed download size, required operating-system version and any statement about extra downloads, online activation or downloadable chapters. If a listing gives only a package size, treat it as an initial figure rather than a final footprint.
- Estimate the installed footprint. Prefer an on-device size when the store provides one. Otherwise, assume expansion will make the installed app larger than the compressed download and that first-launch content may add more.
- Plan for writable headroom. Installation and patching can require temporary working space in addition to the final game size. Keep enough free capacity for the initial asset delivery, saves and a future update rather than filling the phone to the last megabyte.
- Identify the delivery model. Android references to App Bundles, Play Asset Delivery or on-demand features indicate that content may arrive in separate pieces. Apple references to asset packs, on-demand resources or Background Assets carry the same implication. Decide whether you can complete those downloads on Wi-Fi before playing.
- Install, launch and measure again. Let the game finish its first-run downloads, then revisit the storage screen. This post-install number is the most useful value for comparing it with your remaining capacity.
- Recheck after a significant update. A new season, language pack or level set can increase Documents & Data even when the store’s headline download appears modest.
When only one size is shown
Do not convert a single number into a false promise. If the listing displays only a download size, use it to judge data consumption and download time, then allow additional space for expansion and content delivery. If it displays only an installed-size estimate, remember that the network download may be compressed and that the first launch can still fetch optional assets.
A simple comparison worksheet
For each candidate, write down the following values in the same units:
- Initial store download.
- Installed app size immediately after first launch.
- Documents & Data or user-data size after the game has completed its downloads.
- Free space before installation and after installation.
- Whether updates or new content have historically increased the on-device total.
This turns an ambiguous store card into a measurement you can use. A game that starts at 900 MB but grows slowly may be easier to live with than one that downloads 500 MB and then builds several gigabytes of cached content.
How to judge battery impact without a misleading “hours” claim
There is no authoritative cross-game table that assigns a fixed number of battery hours to mobile indie games. Battery results change with the phone’s processor and display, brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, graphics settings, network conditions and session length. Two players can run the same game and see materially different drain.

Apple’s energy guidance frames the goal as increasing use time on a single charge by reducing power consumption. Its practical principles are to do less work, work more efficiently and avoid misusing system APIs. Those principles are more dependable than a generic battery-hour label.

Workloads that usually increase drain
- Continuous computation: complex simulation, path-finding, physics or procedural generation keeps the processor active even when the screen appears calm.
- High rendering load: detailed 3D scenes, dynamic lighting, particle effects, high resolutions and uncapped frame rates make the graphics processor work harder.
- Networking: persistent multiplayer connections, frequent synchronization, downloads and voice features add radio and processing activity.
- Location, camera or microphone access: a game that uses these sensors continuously has more hardware to power than an offline title that needs only touch input.
- Background activity: unnecessary polling, notifications, analytics or downloads outside an active session can consume energy while you are not playing.
These are risk signals, not a verdict. A stylized 3D game may be well optimized, while a simple-looking game can perform frequent background work. Treat the listed features as reasons to inspect settings and test, not as a substitute for measurement.
Battery-friendly clues in a listing or settings menu
- An offline mode that does not require a persistent connection.
- Graphics-quality presets, resolution scaling or a frame-rate selector.
- A 30 frames-per-second option in addition to a higher setting.
- Short, self-contained sessions rather than always-running events or live maps.
- Clear controls for downloads, notifications and background synchronization.
These controls let you trade visual detail or immediacy for longer sessions. They do not guarantee a particular result, because display brightness and the phone’s efficiency remain significant variables.
A repeatable test on your own phone
- Charge the phone to a consistent starting level and note the battery percentage.
- Use the same brightness, refresh-rate setting and network condition you normally use. Do not compare one game on Wi-Fi at low brightness with another on cellular at maximum brightness.
- Play a representative section for a fixed period, such as one normal session, while recording the ending percentage and the phone’s temperature.
- Repeat with a lower frame-rate or graphics setting if the game offers one.
- Check the operating system’s battery screen for the game’s share of usage. Compare sessions on the same device rather than comparing your percentage directly with someone else’s phone.
Report the conditions whenever you share a result: phone model, display settings, frame-rate cap, network, brightness and session length. Without those details, “lost 20 percent” is not a transferable benchmark.

Google’s technical-quality guidance lists an excessive battery-usage threshold of 1 percent for watch models. That threshold is specific to watches and is not a general battery benchmark for phone games. It should not be used to promise that an indie game will consume only 1 percent per hour on a smartphone.
Offline play, online dependence and travel planning
Offline capability affects both battery and storage decisions. A fully offline game can avoid repeated radio activity and may be easier to use on a flight or in an area with unreliable coverage. “Offline” can still require a one-time download of assets, an account sign-in or an occasional license check, so read the developer’s exact wording.
Always-online games are not automatically poor choices. They may be appropriate if you have stable Wi-Fi and want synchronized saves or multiplayer. They are a higher-risk fit for a long trip because connection loss can interrupt play, and repeated reconnection or content downloads can increase energy use and data consumption.

Before travel, launch the game in airplane mode or with cellular data disabled after its initial setup. Confirm that the title reaches the main menu and loads a save. This practical check is more reliable than assuming that a store category or a single “offline” label covers every mode.

When several games appeal to you, compare the same dimensions instead of choosing by download size alone.

Choose according to the constraint that matters most. If storage is the limiting factor, prioritize the post-install footprint and update behavior. If battery is the limiting factor, prioritize offline play, frame-rate controls and a low background workload. If both are tight, a small initial download is useful only when the completed installation also remains small.

Find the category that is increasing
Return to the operating system’s storage screen and distinguish the app package from Documents & Data or user data. A larger app package after an update may be expected; rapidly increasing user data points to downloaded assets, saves, replays or caches.
Use the game’s own cleanup controls first
Look for options to remove downloaded language packs, completed chapters, replay recordings or high-resolution assets. Deleting data from the system screen can remove saves or force a complete redownload, so confirm what will be erased before using it.
Keep an update buffer
Do not wait until the phone is full. Updates may need temporary space while new files are downloaded and old files are replaced. If an update fails, free space by removing an unused app or moving personal media, then retry on a stable Wi-Fi connection.

Reinstall only as a last resort
A reinstall can clear accumulated caches, but it may also remove local saves and offline content. Verify cloud synchronization or export options before deleting the app. The storage gain is not worth losing progress.
What to do when a game drains the battery
Lower the rendering workload
Enable a lower graphics preset, reduce resolution or cap the frame rate if those controls exist. Shorter sessions and lower brightness also reduce total energy use, although they do not change the game’s underlying efficiency.
Reduce radio and sensor activity
Use Wi-Fi instead of a weak cellular signal when possible, disable location or camera features that are not required for the current mode, and turn off background downloads or notifications in the game’s settings.
Check for abnormal background behavior
If the battery screen shows significant use when the game is closed, force-quitting repeatedly is not a long-term fix. Look for a background-download or synchronization setting, install an available bug-fix update, and contact the developer with the phone model, operating-system version and reproducible steps.
Separate heat from percentage loss
A warm phone can indicate sustained processor or graphics work even when the percentage drop looks acceptable. Conversely, a cool phone on a weak cellular signal may still lose charge because the radio is working hard. Record both temperature and battery percentage during your comparison.
A compact checklist before you install
- Free storage measured on the actual phone.
- Store download size and required operating-system version recorded.
- Installed-size estimate checked, with expansion treated as possible.
- First-launch and optional asset downloads identified.
- Space reserved for saves, Documents & Data and updates.
- Offline behavior verified for the mode you plan to use.
- Graphics and frame-rate controls available or their absence noted.
- Location, camera, microphone, networking and background activity considered.
- A same-device battery test planned if battery life is a hard constraint.
Bottom line: select for the finished footprint and workload
The safest choice is not necessarily the game with the smallest store download. Select the title whose completed installation fits after first-launch assets, saves and updates are accounted for, then favor an offline-capable game with adjustable rendering and little background activity when battery life matters. Measure storage again after setup and compare battery use under the same conditions on your own phone. That process replaces unreliable headline numbers with evidence from the device you actually use.
