Tales of Eternia Remastered is a standalone role-playing game. Reid Hershel, Farah Oersted, and Meredy travel between Inferia and Celestia while trying to prevent the Great Fall, a collision that threatens both realms. You do not need to own another game in the series to understand this story.

Nintendo Switch: the practical handheld choice
Why choose the standard Switch?
The standard Nintendo Switch is the clearest choice when you want to play in handheld mode and already own that system. It is a launch platform, and its approximately 300 MB day-one patch is the smallest update listed by the publisher. That makes it convenient when internal storage is tight or when you are downloading over a slower connection.
An internet connection is required to apply the patch. Plan to connect the console before beginning the game, even if you intend to play offline afterward. The small update does not mean the game has fewer documented remaster features; the same destination icons, encounter controls, Boost, retry, recovery, speed, presentation toggles, and difficulty options are announced for the release as a whole.
When Switch is not the right purchase
If you already own a Switch 2, buying the standard Switch edition solely to obtain a handheld version gives you no documented exclusive story or mode. The separate Switch 2 release may be the more natural purchase for that hardware, especially if you want to avoid choosing between versions later. Conversely, if you do not own either Nintendo system, the Switch 2 decision should be weighed against its larger download requirement rather than an advertised content advantage, because no such advantage is specified.

Nintendo Switch 2: dedicated release, larger download
Nintendo Switch 2 is listed separately from the original Switch. It is aimed at players who own Nintendo’s newer handheld-capable hardware and want the release designated for it. The publisher’s day-one notice lists an approximately 7 GB update for Switch 2 and says that this figure includes the main game. Reserve that space before launch and leave additional room for save data and future system-management needs.
The larger figure is a storage and download consideration, not proof of a different campaign or exclusive combat system. Official materials do not publish a Switch 2-only resolution, frame-rate target, or bonus chapter. If your priority is the smallest initial download, standard Switch has the advantage; if your priority is using the newer Nintendo hardware you already own, Switch 2 is the straightforward fit.

Choose PlayStation 5 when your games are centered on a current PlayStation living-room setup. The version is officially supported and has an approximately 500 MB day-one update. That is modest compared with the Xbox Series X|S and Steam figures listed in the same notice, but you still need an internet connection to install it.
The available announcements do not promise a PS5-exclusive visual mode, resolution, frame-rate, or content package. Buy this version for the convenience of your existing console, controller, display, and account ecosystem rather than for an unverified technical advantage.
PlayStation 4
PlayStation 4 remains an official launch platform for readers who have not moved to current-generation hardware. Its day-one update is approximately 1.3 GB. That is larger than the standard Switch patch but smaller than the approximately 7 GB Steam and Switch 2 figures and the approximately 8 GB Xbox figure.

PS4 is the sensible value choice when you already own the console and do not need a new machine. The source material does not establish a PS5-only story, character, battle feature, or other content difference, so upgrading hardware solely for this remaster is not justified by the documented feature list.

Xbox Series X|S is the natural version for players whose library, controller, and television setup are already on Xbox. The day-one notice lists an approximately 8 GB update and states that the Xbox figure includes the main game. Check available storage before downloading rather than treating 8 GB as a small patch layered on top of a separate installation.
The Xbox announcement does not distinguish Series X from Series S with a published resolution or frame-rate table, and it does not identify Xbox-exclusive content. Choose between the two consoles according to the hardware you already use and the storage headroom you have, not on an unsupported promise of a universal performance lead.

Steam gives the same 4 GB RAM, storage figure, and CPU/GPU examples for minimum and recommended configurations in its listing. It notes that frame rates can drop in graphics-intensive scenes, so the 1080p/60fps descriptions are targets under the listed settings, not a guarantee for every computer.
The Steam edition is the strongest fit if you value Steam Cloud, Steam Achievements, and Family Sharing, or if you want to adjust resolution and quality settings. The listing includes single-player support and English and Japanese full audio. The publisher’s day-one notice lists an approximately 7 GB update for Steam and says that the figure includes the main game; ensure that your drive has more than the bare 8 GB listing requirement available for the download and installation process.

When a console is simpler than Steam
Steam is not automatically better because it is flexible. You need a Windows 11 system with DirectX 12 support and enough graphics capability to hold your preferred settings. A console avoids driver updates, graphics-menu decisions, and the possibility of a frame-rate drop on hardware below the listing’s recommended target. A decision process that avoids buyer’s remorse
- Start with where you will actually play. If you expect most sessions on a train, sofa, or in bed with a handheld, narrow the choice to Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
