3. Prepare the next species you will add
When current animals are stable, select the species for your next planned habitat. Research it before adoption or immediately after acquisition so its habitat opens with the relevant knowledge available. This avoids building an enclosure that technically fits the animal but lacks the enrichment or care options needed for good welfare.

Base this choice on a real near-term plan: a habitat location selected, a compatible group size understood, and the staff and utilities needed to operate it. If the animal is only a distant idea, its research has a lower priority than an infrastructure topic you can use now.
4. Remove the next construction bottleneck
Assign a mechanic when a missing barrier, shelter, facility, utility, or building set is stopping your expansion. Infrastructure research can serve several habitats, so its value may be broader than a species-only improvement. How to choose between two competing topics

Choosing mechanic research for construction
Identify the item that blocks the build
Walk through the planned expansion in build mode and note the first unavailable requirement. It might be a barrier type, a shelter component, a staff facility, a utility, or a building-piece set. When two mechanic topics are both available, favour the one that can be reused. A utility or facility serving several habitats has a wider effect than a specialised piece for one enclosure. Map the next few habitats before assigning the mechanic; if the same requirement appears repeatedly, it is a strong candidate for early research.
Coordinate research with repairs
Mechanics are also responsible for repairs, including habitat walls. Do not assign every mechanic to research while a damaged barrier threatens animal safety or guest access. Keep enough coverage for inspections and urgent fixes, then use the remaining capacity for the research project. A fast unlock is not a gain if a neglected repair causes a more serious interruption.
Planning aquariums and aviaries
Specialised habitats should be treated as projects with dependencies. Your first habitat has poor enrichment
Confirm that food, habitat suitability, group size, and cohabitation are not the real causes. If enrichment is the remaining deficit, send a vet to research that species through the research centre. All animals are comfortable, but expansion is blocked by a barrier
