Quick setup guide by terrain
| Terrain or situation | Range | Primary setup priority | Recovery plan | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steep, slippery climb | Low range | Tires if grip is marginal | Standard winch aimed at a reachable tree or fixed point | Low range gives finer control and traction while climbing |
| Rock steps and boulders | Low range | Controlled wheel placement and adequate clearance | Carry a portable winching point if anchors are sparse | Slow torque helps the vehicle climb rather than surge into an obstacle |
| Mud or muck | Low range | Tires and a conservative line | Check for an anchor before committing | Low gear is intended for powering through muck while maintaining control |
| Flat or safer transit | High range | Efficiency and route speed | Normal winch remains useful, but a portable point is optional if anchors are frequent | The extra crawling control of low range is unnecessary on easier ground |
| Wet weather or worn tires | Reassess; normally low range on difficult sections | Restore tire condition and avoid overestimating grip | Keep recovery gear ready | Weather and tire condition affect grip |
| Damaged vehicle | Use the range that minimizes wheelspin and impacts | Repair when possible; kits are limited | Plan an anchor before taking another risk | Damage reduces performance, so the previous setup may no longer be adequate |
This is a terrain decision, not a permanent vehicle setting. A route can move from a flat approach to a muddy incline within a few minutes; change range before the difficult section instead of waiting for wheelspin.
What low and high range actually change
Low range for control and difficult surfaces
Low range is the dedicated difficult-terrain mode. TechRadar’s review describes it as improving control and traction on slippery surfaces and steep slopes, while PC Gamer’s preview characterizes low gear as slow but better for climbing rocks and powering through muck. In practical terms, it lets you make deliberate progress where a sudden surge, wheelspin or poorly timed throttle input would lose momentum.

Use low range before the front wheels reach the slope, rock step or mud. Entering the obstacle already in the appropriate range avoids a hurried change while the vehicle is sliding or leaning. Keep your line smooth and make small steering corrections; low range helps only if the vehicle remains pointed toward a route with usable traction.
High range for uncomplicated travel
High range is the practical choice for flatter or safer travel when crawling control is not needed. The available descriptions present low range as a specialist mode for difficult terrain, not as a universal setting that should be left engaged everywhere. Staying in high range on easy ground avoids imposing slow, deliberate behavior on sections where the trail offers adequate grip and room to maneuver.
Do not treat high range as a promise of better performance on every surface. If the route becomes steep, slippery or obstructed, the decision should follow the terrain rather than the desire to maintain speed.
Terrain-by-terrain setup decisions
Steep slopes
- Inspect the climb and identify where the surface becomes loose, wet or uneven.
- Change to low range before the incline starts.
- Approach with a line that avoids the most severe cross-slope angle and keeps the vehicle pointed uphill.
- Use measured throttle and steering. A faster approach does not compensate for insufficient grip.
- If the vehicle begins sliding or spinning, stop adding speed, reassess the line and prepare the winch rather than repeatedly attacking the same section.
Tires become the next priority when the vehicle has adequate control but cannot hold the surface. The developer has confirmed a grip benefit from tire upgrades, but no percentage improvement or guaranteed climb has been published. A tire upgrade therefore improves your odds; it does not establish that a particular slope will become climbable.

Rocks, ledges and boulders
Low range is again the starting point because rock work rewards controlled movement. Pick a line that lets the wheels contact the obstacle as squarely as the trail allows. Avoid turning sharply while one side is climbing a step, and use the slow response to place the vehicle rather than bouncing it over the obstacle.
Clearance matters, but the published vehicle information does not state the clearance of Protector, Burro or Trail Burner. Watch the chassis and underbody in play and treat an unfamiliar vehicle as untested on a particular rock line. If a boulder hangs the vehicle, the standard winch can help only when its cable reaches a suitable tree or fixed point. A portable winching point is the answer when no natural anchor is available.
Mud and muck
Enter mud in low range with tires suited to the grip problem. Keep the vehicle moving at a controlled pace, but do not confuse momentum with a solution: excessive wheelspin can leave you deeper in the same rut. If the first attempt fails, change the line or recover the vehicle instead of digging the tires into the surface through repeated throttle.

Mixed routes and transitions
Mixed trails deserve a transition plan. Use high range on an uncomplicated approach, then change to low range before the first demanding section. After the obstacle, return to high range only when the route is genuinely easier. This avoids two common errors: entering a climb too quickly in high range and crawling unnecessarily across a long, safe stretch.
When tires should be your first upgrade
Tires are the clearest upgrade choice when the symptom is loss of grip rather than lack of control. The vehicle guide reports that the developer confirmed tires improve grip, but it does not publish a measured percentage, a tire-by-tire comparison or a list of slopes that become possible after upgrading.
- Choose tires first when the vehicle reaches the correct line but spins on a slippery surface.
- Do not expect tires to fix a route with a poor approach, an impossible angle or no recovery anchor.
- Reevaluate after rain or other weather changes because surface grip can change independently of the upgrade.
- Check tire condition after rough travel; worn or damaged tires can invalidate a setup that worked earlier.
Because the full parts price list is not published, calculate the cost in Pebbles at the point of purchase rather than relying on community lists. A tire upgrade is a defensible priority for traction problems, but the exact value depends on the vehicle, surface and current condition.
Winching and recovery: plan the anchor before you get stuck
What the standard winch can and cannot do
The standard winch pulls toward a reachable tree or other fixed point. Its effectiveness is governed by anchor geometry, not simply by how much cable appears to remain. Extra line does not solve a route with no anchor or an anchor positioned in the wrong direction.

Portable winching points
A portable winching point addresses the no-anchor case. PC Gamer’s demo report describes using one to free a vehicle that was hung on a boulder. Carry one when the trail is exposed, rocky or otherwise unlikely to provide a nearby tree or fixed object.
Recovery procedure
- Stop applying throttle as soon as the vehicle is hung, spinning without progress or sliding into a worse position.
- Look around the vehicle for a reachable tree or fixed anchor that lies toward a safe exit.
- If an anchor is available, use the standard winch and pull along the line that reduces the obstacle rather than across it.
- If no suitable anchor is reachable, deploy or equip a portable winching point, then connect the winch to that point.
- In co-op, ask a teammate to position a vehicle where it can serve as a winch anchor when the game’s geometry allows it.
- Once free, change the approach or range before attempting the obstacle again; repeating the same pull without changing the setup wastes time and can add damage.
Co-op supports up to four drivers total. A teammate’s vehicle can therefore provide an additional recovery option, but it still needs to be placed where the winch line can pull in a useful direction.
Weather, tire condition and damage
Grip is not fixed. Weather and tire condition affect how the vehicle behaves, and damage reduces performance. Repair kits are limited, so treat a damaged vehicle as a different setup rather than assuming the same line remains safe.
- Before a wet or otherwise changed section: switch to the range appropriate for the terrain and identify an anchor.
- After a failed climb: inspect whether the failure was wheelspin, a bad line, insufficient clearance or damage; only the first of these points directly to tires.
- When damaged: use a conservative route, preserve repair supplies for situations where they change the outcome and avoid testing the hardest obstacle first.
- After repairs or a tire change: retest on a manageable slope before committing to a long, anchorless section.
Choosing among Protector, Burro and Trail Burner
The three named demo vehicles are Protector, Burro and Trail Burner. All three were described as upgradeable and customizable, and vehicles unlock through trail challenges. However, no cited guide publishes a complete specification table or measured comparison of their power, torque, weight, wheelbase, clearance, turning radius or drivetrain behavior.

That missing information rules out a factual universal ranking. Community advice about a “best order” for engine, suspension or other parts should be treated as preference unless it is backed by repeatable measurements from the same build and conditions. The release build and later patches may also change the roster or upgrade balance.
A practical selection method
- Use the vehicle currently available to you and observe how precisely it can be placed on the trail.
- Record the failure mode on your route: loss of grip, lack of control, clearance trouble, turning difficulty or repeated recovery problems.
- Change one relevant variable first—usually tires for grip or range selection for control—so you can tell what helped.
- Compare vehicles on the same obstacle in similar weather and condition. A casual impression from different routes is not a vehicle specification.
- Keep the vehicle that gives you the most predictable result for your driving style and planned terrain, rather than chasing an unsupported global ranking.
How to prioritize upgrades when prices and stats are unclear
Published material does not include the complete parts price list, an engine-versus-suspension cost-to-benefit ranking or measured upgrade gains. Upgrade balance was still being adjusted, so a fixed “buy this exact order” list would be misleading.
Use the following priority logic instead:
- Traction problem: investigate tire upgrades first.
- Control problem on steep or slippery ground: use low range before spending Pebbles.
- Frequent no-anchor recoveries: reserve capacity for a portable winching point.
- Repeated impact or clearance failures: evaluate suspension or another handling upgrade only after confirming the part’s current in-game effect and cost.
- General performance concern: test the vehicle on the route that matters to you before buying an engine upgrade, because no published figures establish its return for every vehicle.
Change one part at a time, keep the terrain and weather comparable, and stop treating an upgrade as proven if the result could equally have come from a better line or drier conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRoute preparation checklist
- Identify the hardest surface on the route, not just the starting area.
- Choose low range before steep, rocky or muddy sections.
- Confirm that the tires are in suitable condition and upgrade them when grip is the limiting factor.
- Locate a tree or fixed anchor before entering an obstacle.
- Carry a portable winching point where natural anchors are unlikely.
- Preserve repair kits because damage changes vehicle performance.
- In co-op, agree which driver will provide an anchor and where that vehicle can safely stand.
- After weather changes, recheck both grip and the recovery line.
Diagnosing a failed attempt
| What happened | Most likely decision to revisit | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wheels spin on a climb while the vehicle remains aligned | Traction | Use low range, improve the line and consider tire upgrades |
| The vehicle surges or loses precise placement on rocks | Control | Enter in low range and use smaller steering and throttle inputs |
| The chassis hangs on a boulder | Clearance or route choice | Back out if possible; otherwise use a reachable anchor or portable winching point |
| The winch pulls sideways or cannot improve the position | Anchor geometry | Find a better-aligned fixed point or create one with a portable point |
| A formerly reliable route fails after rain or wear | Changed grip | Retest in low range, check tire condition and avoid assuming the old result still applies |
| Performance is poor after collisions | Damage | Repair when justified, then choose a less demanding line until performance is restored |
What is established—and what is not
The dependable principles are straightforward: low range is for controlled work on steep, slippery, rocky and muddy terrain; high range suits easier travel; tires improve grip; winches require usable anchors; portable winching points solve the no-anchor case; and weather, tire condition and damage matter.
What remains unpublished is equally important. There is no complete vehicle-stat table, no measured grip percentage, no authoritative best vehicle for each biome, no full upgrade price list and no guaranteed slope result for a specific part. Those gaps make a repeatable, terrain-specific setup more honest than a permanent build claim. Recheck the in-game behavior after patches because the release version and future balance changes can alter the result.
