The armor-state rule decides your opening move in Hellraiser: Revival: use a blunt weapon such as the baseball bat to break armor, then switch to a blade or firearm once flesh is exposed. Sharp weapons are most efficient against unprotected enemies. There is no universally best weapon; the right choice depends on armor, distance, enemy numbers, stealth, available ammunition, melee durability and whether the encounter can be solved with the Genesis Configuration or the environment.
This guide maps each weapon to the situations it handles best, explains when to change weapons, and shows how to preserve scarce shells, revolver rounds, durability, healing, Suffering and inventory space.

Quick weapon matchups
| Enemy or situation | Best opening tool | How to finish efficiently | Main cost or danger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armored cultist | Baseball bat or another blunt melee weapon | Strip the plating, then use a knife, another blade or a firearm against exposed flesh. | Melee durability and the danger of fighting at close range. |
| Unarmored cultist or exposed flesh | Knife or bladed melee weapon | Stay close only when the target is isolated; otherwise use an economical firearm. | Other melee weapons degrade, and a missed stealth approach can trigger a costly fight. |
| Unalerted target | Knife | Approach from a safe angle and perform a silent takedown. | Positioning and alert status; the advantage disappears once the enemy detects you. |
| Dense group of weaker enemies | SMG | Control the group with short, deliberate bursts and stop firing as soon as the immediate threat is gone. | Its high rate of fire can consume ammunition quickly. |
| Boss or high-health target | Shotgun, preferably with fire | Use the shotgun for close-range burst, then use the revolver for deliberate headshots or weak points. | Shells and revolver rounds are scarce, so wasted shots are expensive. |
| Environmental setup | Genesis Configuration | Throw nearby sawblades or pins with telekinesis, pull fire from lamps with pyrokinesis, and use finishers to generate Suffering. | Power resources and the time needed to create a safe setup. |
| Unclear or invulnerable threat | Stealth, evasion or flight | Break line of sight, bypass the encounter and preserve supplies when direct damage is ineffective. | You may need to abandon the fight rather than force a kill. |
What “best weapon” means in this game
Weapon strength is contextual rather than a single damage ranking. A tool that wins one encounter can be the wrong choice over an entire run if it consumes ammunition, loses durability or exposes you to unnecessary damage. Evaluate every fight on eight questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Is the target armored, unarmored or temporarily exposed?
- Can you safely fight at melee range?
- How many enemies must be controlled at once?
- Is a silent takedown still possible?
- Do you have enough shells or revolver rounds for the next high-value encounter?
- Will using a melee weapon cost durability needed for an armored section?
- Can an environmental object, fire source or Genesis power do part of the work?
- Is the enemy actually vulnerable to ordinary damage?
Thinking in those terms prevents the common mistake of spending your strongest ammunition on a target that could have been handled with a bat, knife or environmental hazard.

Read the armor state before attacking
Armored targets
Armor changes the order of operations. Blunt impact is the practical answer because it breaks plating instead of asking a sharp weapon or bullet to do a job it handles poorly. GamesRadar’s review describes switching to a baseball bat to batter armor away and expose flesh to damage. Treat that as the opening phase, not the entire fight.
Close the distance only when you have room to swing and a retreat route. Repeatedly committing to a cornered armored enemy turns a durability problem into a healing problem. Strike until the protection is gone, then change tools immediately. Continuing to spend bat durability after flesh is exposed gives up the blunt weapon’s main advantage.
Exposed flesh
Once plating has been removed, the matchup changes. Knives and other sharp weapons are effective against unprotected targets, and firearms become more efficient because they no longer have to work through the armor layer. The correct switch depends on distance, alert status and how many threats are nearby.

If the enemy is already closing or another enemy is entering the arena, finish with a firearm rather than trading health for a small ammunition saving.
Armored cultists: bat first, damage second
Opening sequence
- Confirm that the cultist’s protection is still intact.
- Equip the baseball bat or another blunt melee weapon.
- Use controlled swings to remove the plating while keeping space to retreat.
- Watch for the visual change that indicates exposed flesh.
- Stop spending blunt-weapon durability and move to a knife, blade or firearm.
The bat is not automatically the best tool for the whole encounter. Its job is to break the layer that makes other attacks inefficient. After that job is complete, retaining the bat for another armored enemy is usually more valuable than using it as a general-purpose finisher.
When firearms are safer
If the cultist is already mixed into a group, or if closing for melee would expose you to attacks from another direction, use a firearm when necessary. You are paying ammunition to buy positioning and health. That trade is sensible when the alternative is taking damage or losing control of the room.
Unarmored enemies: blades and measured shots
Against unprotected flesh, a knife or bladed melee weapon removes the armor tax and can finish an isolated enemy quietly. The knife is especially useful when the target has not noticed you. For an alert enemy in an open space, choose between a blade and a firearm based on whether you can reach melee range without crossing another threat’s attack path.

The knife is described in the cited tier guide as the durable stealth option and a silent takedown tool that does not break. That makes it the preferred choice for repeated stealth work. Other melee weapons can still be useful against exposed flesh, but their degradation means they should not be treated as limitless resources.
When not to force melee
- The target is facing you and there is no cover or escape route.
- A second enemy can interrupt the takedown.
- You would have to pass through an active hazard to reach the target.
- Your current position would leave you trapped after the kill.
In those cases, a controlled firearm burst may cost less than the healing and recovery required after a risky knife attack.
Rank #2
Stealth encounters: make the knife your economy tool
Stealth is where the knife provides value beyond raw damage. An unalerted enemy can be removed without spending ammunition, and the knife’s stated durability advantage makes it suitable for multiple silent takedowns. Approach from behind or from a side angle that leaves room to disengage if the target turns.
A reliable stealth routine
- Pause before entering the enemy’s detection area and identify nearby patrols.
- Choose the target whose removal opens the safest route, not necessarily the closest target.
- Keep the knife equipped and avoid creating noise that alerts the group.
- Perform the takedown only when another enemy cannot interrupt it.
- Reassess the room after each removal instead of automatically attacking the next target.
If the approach fails, do not keep trying to force a silent kill while surrounded. Once the group is alerted, switch to the weapon that matches the new threat pattern.
Groups of weaker enemies: use the SMG with discipline
The SMG is the recommended crowd-control weapon because its high fire rate can stop several weaker enemies before they surround you. Its weakness is the same feature that makes it effective: automatic fire consumes ammunition quickly.
How to avoid wasting a magazine
- Fire in short bursts rather than holding the trigger through every animation.
- Prioritize the enemy closest to reaching you or the one blocking your escape route.
- Stop shooting a target that is already incapacitated and move to the next active threat.
- Use cover, corners and doorways to reduce the number of enemies that can attack at once.
- Switch to melee for a lone exposed enemy when the room is controlled.
The SMG should solve a crowd-control problem, not become the default weapon for every target. Saving ammunition matters because a later boss or emergency may offer no safe opportunity to recover what you spent.
Bosses and high-health targets: shotgun opener, revolver precision
Shotgun for close-range burst
The shotgun is the strongest opening choice for a boss or other high-health target when you can reach effective range. Fire is particularly valuable. Creative Bloq’s review describes a sequence in which a shotgun blast ignites a barrel, fire leaps from one enemy to the next, and a group is finished with hazards such as a bear trap. That example illustrates why the shotgun is more than a damage button: it can start an environmental chain.
Use the shotgun when the boss is committed to an attack, trapped in a narrow approach or close enough that the blast’s burst damage is worthwhile. Do not spend shells merely because the boss is visible. If the arena gives you time to create a fire or hazard setup, let the environment increase the value of the shot.
Revolver for deliberate weak-point shots
The revolver belongs after the opening burst or whenever the boss exposes a head or other weak point at a distance. Its role is deliberate accuracy, not crowd suppression. Take the shot only when you can identify the weak point and hold a stable aim; speculative fire wastes scarce rounds.
A practical boss sequence is to use the shotgun to create an opening, exploit fire or another hazard if available, and then reserve revolver rounds for confirmed headshots or weak points. If the target is not exposed, reposition rather than emptying the cylinder into armor or a protected phase.
Why ammunition conservation matters most here
Shells and revolver rounds are described as scarce resources. A boss attempt that uses every round may leave you unable to answer a later high-health target. Enter major encounters with a plan for which weapon handles the opening, which handles the exposed phase and what you will do if the boss becomes temporarily invulnerable.
Rank #3
Genesis Configuration and environmental kills
The Genesis Configuration can change the weapon calculation because it turns the arena into part of your arsenal. Telekinesis can hurl objects such as sawblades or pins. Pyrokinesis can pull fire from lamps. These options are strongest when you have time to identify useful objects and when enemies are grouped near a hazard.
Telekinesis setups
Look for throwable objects before committing to a firearm exchange. A sawblade or pin can damage an enemy without spending conventional ammunition, while the ability to attack from a safer angle can reduce incoming damage. The value depends on the room: an object in an exposed position may not be worth reaching if doing so places you in melee range.
Pyrokinesis and chain reactions
Fire becomes more valuable when enemies are close enough for its effect to spread or when a burning object controls a route. The shotgun-and-burning-barrel example demonstrates the principle: combine a direct attack with the environment instead of treating every enemy as a separate health bar.
Finishers and Suffering
Finishers can generate Suffering, so a takedown may have a resource benefit in addition to removing an enemy. Use finishers when the animation is safe and the resulting Suffering will matter for the next part of the encounter. Do not start a finisher in a position where another enemy can interrupt it.
Enemies you should not fight directly
The game overview notes that some enemies cannot be defeated directly. When ordinary attacks do not produce a meaningful response, treat the encounter as an evasion problem rather than a damage check.

Signs that retreat is the correct weapon choice
- Your attacks produce no useful reaction or the enemy repeatedly resets.
- The encounter offers a route around the threat.
- You are spending scarce ammunition without changing the enemy’s state.
- The arena contains no safe position from which to continue firing.
- A scripted movement or objective is clearly more important than a kill.
Break line of sight, use stealth and flee when necessary. Preserving ammunition and healing can be more valuable than proving that you can remain in the room.

Combat in Hellraiser: Revival is an economy of ammunition, weapon durability, healing, Suffering, coins and inventory space. The most powerful attack is not automatically the best purchase if it leaves you unable to handle the next encounter.
Spend durability where it has the highest return
Reserve blunt melee durability for armor. Use the knife’s stated durability advantage for stealth and isolated exposed targets. Avoid using a degrading blade to clear a large group when a controlled SMG burst or environmental attack can solve the problem with less risk.
Protect scarce ammunition
- Use the bat to remove armor before spending bullets on the exposed phase.
- Use the knife for safe, unalerted takedowns.
- Use the SMG only when several enemies must be controlled quickly.
- Reserve shotgun shells for bosses, high-health targets or valuable fire setups.
- Reserve revolver rounds for confirmed headshots and weak points.
Account for inventory and recovery
Every weapon choice affects what you carry forward. A fight that consumes multiple weapon types, healing items and power resources can be a poor trade even if you survive. Before opening an optional battle, ask whether its reward justifies the supplies and inventory space it will cost.

An encounter-by-encounter decision process
- Identify the state. Decide whether the enemy is armored, exposed, unalerted, grouped or apparently invulnerable.
- Choose the cheapest safe opener. Bat for armor, knife for a safe stealth kill, SMG for a dense group, or shotgun for a high-health target.
- Check the arena. Locate lamps, barrels, sawblades, pins, bear traps, cover and escape routes before firing.
- Change weapons when the state changes. Armor removed means the blunt phase is over; a revealed weak point means the revolver may now be worthwhile.
- Stop when the objective is met. Do not spend ammunition on an enemy that can be bypassed or has already stopped threatening your route.
- Reassess your reserves. After the room is clear, count the resources you still have before entering the next area.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Using a blade on intact armor
Problem: durability is spent without addressing the protection layer. Fix: open with blunt melee, then change weapons after the plating breaks.
Holding the SMG trigger through a whole group
Problem: the high fire rate drains ammunition after the immediate threat has ended. Fix: fire in bursts, prioritize the nearest active threat and stop as soon as the target is no longer dangerous.
Spending revolver rounds on body shots
Problem: scarce precision ammunition is used without exploiting the weapon’s main purpose. Fix: wait for a confirmed headshot or weak point.
Entering boss arenas without checking hazards
Problem: a direct firefight wastes shells that could have started a fire or environmental chain. Fix: scan for lamps, barrels, traps and throwable objects before committing.

Platform and version context
GamesRadar lists Hellraiser: Revival for release on September 24, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2. Creative Bloq’s cited review covers the PS5 version. Weapon availability, balance and encounter behavior can change with patches or differ by platform and regional edition, so confirm your installed version before relying on a damage interaction or item location. No authoritative source in the available material publishes a complete universal damage table, hit count, percentage advantage or version-independent weapon statistic; the recommendations here are matchup and resource guidance rather than numerical damage claims.
Recommended loadout logic
Carry the knife whenever stealth routes are plausible. Keep a blunt weapon available for armored enemies instead of treating it as disposable general melee equipment. Bring the SMG when a level is likely to produce dense groups, but preserve enough ammunition for emergencies. Keep shotgun shells and revolver rounds for bosses, high-health targets and confirmed opportunities. Finally, treat Genesis Configuration power and environmental objects as part of the loadout, not as scenery to ignore.
The simplest rule is also the most reliable: break armor with blunt force, exploit exposed flesh with blades or firearms, use the knife when stealth is safe, use the SMG to prevent groups from overwhelming you, and pair the shotgun and revolver with boss openings and weak points. When the arena offers fire, telekinetic projectiles or finishers that generate Suffering, let those systems reduce the amount of ammunition and durability you spend.
