Choose Family when two to eight Nintendo Accounts can stay in one Nintendo Account family group. Which Nintendo Switch Online plan fits you?
Nintendo Switch Online has two decisions rather than one: how many Nintendo Accounts need coverage, and whether the additional Expansion Pack content will be used. The account decision determines Individual versus Family; the content decision determines standard versus Expansion Pack.

| Your situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One person needs online multiplayer and cloud saves | Standard Individual | It covers the essential online services at the lowest commitment. |
| One person wants the extra retro libraries or included DLC | Expansion Pack Individual | You receive standard benefits plus the additional game systems and selected DLC. |
| Two to eight people share a Nintendo Account family group | Standard Family | One 12-month membership covers every account in the group. |
| Several family-group members will use Expansion Pack content | Expansion Pack Family | The higher annual fee can be efficient when the group actually uses the additions. |
| You mainly want a short test period | Standard Individual trial or one-month plan | The seven-day trial excludes Expansion Pack content and converts to a paid, renewing membership unless canceled. |
A Family membership is not a general household pass. It covers the Nintendo Accounts that are members of the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, with a maximum of eight accounts. People outside that group do not receive the benefits, even if they use the same console.

What Nintendo Switch Online is for
A membership attaches to a Nintendo Account, not permanently to one console. Sign in with that account on compatible Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 systems and the account’s online benefits follow it. Other local profiles do not automatically inherit an Individual membership.

The standard tier is designed around four practical needs:
- Online multiplayer: Play compatible games over the internet. The game itself must support Nintendo Switch Online features; a membership cannot add online modes that a title does not provide.
- Save Data Cloud: Back up saved data for supported games and restore it when appropriate. Compatibility is decided game by game, so check a title’s support information rather than assuming every save is covered.
- Classic games: Access Nintendo’s curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries while the membership is active.
- Extras: Nintendo lists Nintendo Music on a smart device and special offers among the standard benefits. The smartphone application has age, smartphone, internet, and regional requirements.
These are access benefits, not permanent purchases. Classic-game access and cloud features depend on an active membership and on the relevant game or service remaining compatible.
U.S. prices and what the terms mean
The following are Nintendo’s published U.S. prices for 2026. They are not worldwide prices; Nintendo says the amount depends on the country where the membership is used. The standard Family and both Expansion Pack plans are annual products in this pricing table.
| Plan | Term | U.S. price | Approximate effective monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Individual | 1 month | $3.99 | $3.99 |
| Standard Individual | 3 months | $7.99 | About $2.66 |
| Standard Individual | 12 months | $19.99 | About $1.67 |
| Expansion Pack Individual | 12 months | $49.99 | About $4.17 |
| Standard Family | 12 months | $34.99 | About $2.92 for the group; about $4.37 each if eight accounts share it |
| Expansion Pack Family | 12 months | $79.99 | About $6.67 for the group; about $10 each if eight accounts share it |
The per-person figures in the last column are illustrations, not a separate Nintendo price. They assume the full eight-account capacity is used. Nintendo describes standard Family as less than $5 per person per year and Expansion Pack Family as about $10 per person per year at eight users. With fewer members, the same annual fee is divided among fewer accounts.
Annual terms have the lowest effective monthly cost, but only if you expect to keep the service for the year. A one- or three-month standard Individual term can make sense for a temporary online-game session, a short trip, or a player who is unsure about continuing.
Standard membership: what you receive
Online multiplayer
Use compatible games’ internet multiplayer modes with a covered Nintendo Account. Multiplayer rules still vary by game: some titles require every participant to have their own Nintendo Account and membership, while local multiplayer may work without separate online subscriptions. Check the game’s own requirements before buying several memberships.

Save Data Cloud
Cloud backup is useful when replacing a console, moving between systems, or recovering from a hardware problem, but it is not universal. Nintendo identifies supported games, and a developer can exclude a title or limit how its save data behaves. Treat the feature as a supported backup service, not a guarantee that every save can be copied freely.

NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries
Standard members can play Nintendo’s curated collections for these three systems through the relevant Nintendo Switch Online applications. The catalog is a selection rather than a complete historical archive. Availability can differ by region, and access lasts only while the membership is active.
Nintendo Music and special offers
Nintendo includes Nintendo Music on a smart device and lists special offers as standard membership benefits. The smartphone app is subject to age, compatible-phone, internet, and regional conditions. If the music service is your main reason for subscribing, confirm that your account, device, and country meet those conditions before treating it as part of the value calculation.
What Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack includes every standard benefit, then adds more classic-game systems and selected downloadable content. It is an upgrade to the membership tier, not a replacement for buying games that you do not already own.
Additional classic systems
Nintendo lists select games from Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis. “Select” matters: the service is a curated catalog, and the exact lineup can vary by region and change over time. If one specific game is your deciding factor, verify that title in the Nintendo Switch Online application for your country before upgrading.

Nintendo gives Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Happy Home Paradise as examples of included paid DLC. The membership supplies a license to use eligible DLC; it does not give you ownership of the base game. You must own the full game, and access to the DLC pauses when the Expansion Pack membership ends.

That distinction affects families in particular. A Family Expansion Pack can make sense when several accounts already own the relevant base games and will use the add-ons. It is poor value if nobody owns the base game, because the membership does not replace that purchase.
Switch 2 benefits
On Nintendo Switch 2, Expansion Pack also provides select Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles and selected Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. These additions are console-generation specific: owning Expansion Pack on an original Switch does not create GameCube access there. Standard membership remains usable on compatible Switch and Switch 2 systems, but these particular extras require Switch 2 and supported titles.
Individual or Family: make the account decision first
Choose Individual for one Nintendo Account
Individual is the straightforward option when one account needs online play, cloud saves, or the standard libraries. It is also the cleanest choice when players cannot remain in one family group, even if they live in the same home. The membership follows the subscribing account wherever that account signs in on a compatible system.
Choose Family for two to eight accounts
Family memberships cover the purchaser and up to seven other Nintendo Accounts in that purchaser’s family group. Every covered account receives the plan’s benefits, including online play and cloud saves where supported. The plan is sold as a 12-month membership, so compare the annual fee with the number of accounts that will genuinely use it.
Do not count console profiles; count Nintendo Accounts in the family group. A child profile, a second adult’s account, or an account on another console must be added to the group to be covered. If an account is not in the group, it cannot use the Family membership merely because the console owner paid for it.
When Family is not automatically cheaper
Family becomes economical as the group grows. With only one user, standard Family costs more than a 12-month Individual. With two users, divide the annual fee between those two people and compare that result with two Individual memberships. Repeat the calculation for your actual group size, and include only accounts that need online service or the other benefits.

How to decide whether Expansion Pack is worth it
Start with the standard plan and move up only when an Expansion Pack feature answers a real use case. Use this checklist:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Retro library use: You expect to play Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, or SEGA Genesis titles, not merely browse the catalog.
- DLC use: You own the required base game and will play included DLC such as the listed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Animal Crossing: New Horizons additions.
- Switch 2 use: You own Switch 2 and want supported GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles or selected Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs.
- Multiple users: Several people in the family group will use those additions. One occasional player may not justify the higher annual fee for everyone.
If your only requirements are online multiplayer, cloud saves, and NES, Super NES, or Game Boy games, standard membership already supplies them. Expansion Pack’s higher price is paying for the extra catalogs, DLC licenses, and Switch 2 benefits; it does not make standard online play faster or add a separate level of cloud storage.
Trial periods, auto-renewal, and billing
Seven-day trial
Nintendo’s seven-day trial converts to a one-month auto-renewing standard membership at the then-current price unless you cancel it. The trial does not include Expansion Pack content. Treat the trial as a test of standard online features and libraries, not as a way to sample Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, GameCube, DLC, or other Expansion Pack additions.
Auto-renewal
Nintendo says a membership auto-renews after its initial term at the then-current price unless renewal is disabled. If you do not want another charge, turn off automatic renewal before the renewal deadline shown in your Nintendo Account. Disabling renewal leaves the current paid term active until it expires; it does not normally erase the remaining days.
Price changes and country
Renewal uses the price in effect at that time, not necessarily the price paid for the original term. Prices also depend on country. Use the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account page associated with the account and country you will actually use instead of converting the U.S. table into a presumed local price.
How to buy or activate the right plan
- Identify the accounts: List every Nintendo Account that needs coverage. For a Family plan, confirm that all of them can be members of one Nintendo Account family group and that the total is eight or fewer.
- Check the console and games: Confirm whether you use an original Switch, Switch 2, or both. Check whether your games support online play and Save Data Cloud, and whether your desired classic games or DLC are included in your region’s catalog.
- Open the membership page: On the console, open Nintendo eShop, select the Nintendo Switch Online section, and review the available Individual, Family, and Expansion Pack options. You can also manage membership from the Nintendo Account website.
- Select the term: Standard Individual is the only option in the U.S. table with one- and three-month terms. Choose an annual term when the lower effective monthly cost outweighs the commitment.
- Review the country price: Confirm the displayed currency, total, renewal date, and whether the purchase is standard or Expansion Pack before paying.
- Check auto-renewal: Decide whether renewal should remain enabled. If you are using the trial or a short-term membership, set a reminder and disable renewal if you do not want an automatic charge.
- Verify coverage: For Family, check the family-group member list after purchase. Each covered account should sign in on its own profile to use the benefits.
Switching plans and common account traps
Individual and Family memberships do not simply stack
Nintendo documents restrictions when changing membership types. Accounts covered by an active Family membership cannot redeem an Individual membership code. Buying a separate Individual code for a covered account can therefore leave the code unusable until the account’s situation changes.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Changing the family group can change coverage
Family coverage is tied to group membership, not to the purchaser’s console. If an account leaves the family group, or the group is reorganized, its access can change even though the original membership term has not ended. Confirm the group arrangement before moving accounts.
Expansion Pack access ends with the membership
Included DLC and additional classic libraries remain available only while the Expansion Pack membership is active. If the membership lapses, the base games you purchased remain yours, but the membership-provided DLC license and catalog access pause. Resubscribing restores eligible access under Nintendo’s current terms.
Troubleshooting before you pay more
Online play is unavailable
- Confirm that the signed-in profile is the Nintendo Account with the active membership.
- Check whether the game requires its own online service, update, or account link.
- For a Family plan, verify that the profile’s Nintendo Account appears in the purchaser’s family group.
- Check the console’s internet connection and the game’s server status before changing tiers.
Cloud saves are missing
- Look up whether the specific game supports Save Data Cloud.
- Use the same Nintendo Account that created the backup.
- Allow the console to connect and synchronize before deleting local save data or moving systems.
A classic game or DLC is not available
- Confirm that the title is in the catalog for your country and membership tier.
- For DLC, confirm that the full game is installed on the same Nintendo Account environment and that the membership is Expansion Pack.
- On Switch 2, verify that the title is one of the supported GameCube classics or Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs; the Expansion Pack name alone does not make every game eligible.
The price does not match an online article
Use the amount shown at checkout for your country. Nintendo can set different prices by market, and renewal uses the then-current price. An older U.S. figure or a price from another country is not a reliable quote for your account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Practical choices for common households
One Switch player who mainly plays online
Buy standard Individual. Select the 12-month term when online play will continue through the year; choose one or three months when the need is temporary. Expansion Pack adds no necessary online capability for this use case.
One player who wants Nintendo 64 or Game Boy Advance games
Choose Expansion Pack Individual, provided the games you want are in your regional catalog. Confirm the exact catalog first because Nintendo offers selected titles rather than every release for those systems.
Two parents and children with separate accounts
Count the Nintendo Accounts, place the intended accounts in one family group, and compare one Family annual fee with the Individual alternatives. Standard Family is the sensible baseline; upgrade to Expansion Pack Family only when multiple members will use its catalogs, DLC, or Switch 2 benefits.
A mixed household with one Switch 2 and older Switch systems
Membership benefits can serve compatible systems linked to the covered accounts. Expansion Pack’s GameCube classics and selected Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs are available only on Switch 2, so calculate their value for the Switch 2 player rather than assuming every household member receives the same console-specific experience.
A player trying Nintendo Switch Online for the first time
Use the seven-day standard trial if available, but remember that it excludes Expansion Pack content and converts to a paid one-month renewal unless canceled. If your decision depends on DLC or the higher-tier classic libraries, the trial cannot answer that question.
Final decision rule
Match the plan to the smallest set of benefits you will use: standard Individual for one account, standard Family for two to eight accounts in one family group, and Expansion Pack only when its additional libraries, included DLC, or Switch 2 features have a specific place in your play schedule. Check the local price, membership term, family-group coverage, supported games, and renewal setting on the purchase screen before confirming.
