How to Choose Your First Survival-Crafting Game: Valheim vs. Enshrouded vs. RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Choose Valheim if you want an expedition-led Viking survival game where travel, preparation and portal logistics matter. Choose Enshrouded if action-RPG combat, substantial construction and a large co-op group are your priorities. Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want skills, magic, potions, quests and a more guided survival-RPG structure in the RuneScape universe.

The practical tie-breakers are how much survival pressure you want, whether building or exploration should lead the experience, how many friends will play, and which progression system sounds most appealing.

Quick comparison: which game fits your priorities?

If you care most about… Start with… Why
Expeditions, survival pressure and self-directed travel Valheim Player-crafted portals have item restrictions, so routes, supplies and transport remain meaningful. The listed multiplayer range is 1–10 players.
Construction combined with action-RPG combat Enshrouded Building and combat are the headline strengths, with unlockable fast-travel points and the largest listed group size: 1–16 players.
Skills, magic, potions and RuneScape progression RuneScape: Dragonwilds Its survival loop adds RuneScape-style skills and magic to gathering, building and crafting. The listed multiplayer range is 1–6 players.
The largest possible group Enshrouded The comparison lists up to 16 players, compared with up to 10 in Valheim and up to 6 in Dragonwilds.
Familiarity with the RuneScape universe RuneScape: Dragonwilds It is a standalone co-op survival game set in the RuneScape universe rather than an add-on to the main MMO.

None of these games is a universal “best.” They emphasize different reasons to survive: Valheim makes the journey itself the challenge, Enshrouded makes fighting and building the center of play, and Dragonwilds layers a skill-based RPG structure over survival crafting.

What kind of survival game is each one?

Valheim: an expedition game with meaningful logistics

Valheim is the best first choice when you want to feel that you are mounting an expedition rather than simply unlocking the next base upgrade. Its comparison profile emphasizes exploration and travel. You decide how far to push into the world, what to carry, where to establish a foothold and when the return journey is worth the risk.

Portals help connect settlements, but they are player-crafted and impose item restrictions. Because not everything can simply be teleported, transporting equipment and materials remains part of the survival identity. A distant resource run therefore involves planning rather than a single fast-travel click. That friction suits players who enjoy navigation, preparation and stories that emerge from a journey going wrong.

Valheim supports 1–10 players in the listed comparison. That is enough for a small private group or a medium-sized server without making the game’s expedition structure irrelevant. You can play alone, but the design still asks you to manage the same travel and supply decisions yourself.

Enshrouded: action-RPG fighting with construction as a major system

Enshrouded is the clearest fit if you want your survival game to feel like an action RPG as much as a crafting game. Combat is foregrounded, while construction is substantial enough to be a primary reason to play rather than a place to store equipment.

Its travel model uses unlockable fast-travel points. That gives progression a different rhythm from Valheim’s player-built, item-limited portals: exploration can open more convenient movement options as you advance. The comparison also describes player-crafted bases as limited, so expect construction to be important without assuming an unlimited number of permanent settlements.

The listed multiplayer range is 1–16 players, the largest of the three. That makes Enshrouded the safest recommendation for a large friend group, provided everyone wants active combat and building rather than a slower, logistics-heavy expedition.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds: a guided survival RPG built around skills

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a standalone co-op survival game in the RuneScape universe. Jagex describes its core loop as: “Gather, build, skill and craft to survive in this co-operative survival crafting game.” That wording matters because “skill” is not just a generic reference to getting stronger; RuneScape context is central to the game’s identity.

The comparison highlights skills, magic, potions and quests alongside the usual gathering, construction and crafting systems. Choose Dragonwilds when you prefer a clearer RPG framework and character-building choices over a completely self-directed survival sandbox.

Its listed group size is 1–6 players. Player-crafted portals require runes, adding a resource cost to fast travel. That makes movement more structured than an unrestricted teleport system and gives magical progression a practical role in everyday logistics.

How the core systems differ

System Valheim Enshrouded RuneScape: Dragonwilds
Primary identity Exploration and expeditions Action-RPG combat and building RuneScape skills and survival RPG progression
Travel Player-crafted portals with item limits Unlockable fast-travel points Player-crafted portals that require runes
Base-building emphasis Supports the expedition loop One of the main attractions; player-crafted bases are described as limited Part of the gather-build-skill-craft loop
Combat emphasis Not the comparison’s primary focus Action-RPG combat is a headline feature Combat sits alongside magic, potions, skills and quests
Listed multiplayer 1–10 players 1–16 players 1–6 players

These labels describe emphasis, not hard exclusions. Valheim still has combat and construction; Enshrouded still requires gathering and survival management; Dragonwilds still asks you to build and craft. The table is useful for identifying which system you want to dominate your first hours.

Which is best for solo play?

All three list a one-player minimum, so the decision is about how much structure and pressure you want to handle alone.

Pick Valheim solo if you enjoy self-directed goals

Solo Valheim works best for players who make their own objectives: establish a safer base, map a route, gather what an expedition requires and decide when to return. The portal item restrictions mean you cannot remove every logistical problem with fast travel, so solo players who enjoy planning get a strong sense of place and consequence.

Pick Enshrouded solo if you want fighting and building to carry the session

Enshrouded is the natural solo choice when you want an active combat loop and a construction project to alternate between. Unlockable fast-travel points reduce the need to repeat every journey once they are available, while building gives you a long-term project between encounters.

Pick Dragonwilds solo if you want RPG direction

Dragonwilds suits solo players who like the idea of improving skills, using magic and preparing potions within a survival framework. Quests and RuneScape context provide more explicit direction than a purely self-imposed expedition. Its portal system still asks you to budget runes, so travel is not free simply because magic exists.

There is no evidence here that one game has a universal solo difficulty advantage. Choose based on the kind of decisions you want to make when nobody else is sharing the workload: route planning in Valheim, encounter and build decisions in Enshrouded, or skill and magical progression in Dragonwilds.

Which is best with friends?

For two to six players

All three support this group size in the listed ranges. Valheim is the strongest fit for a party that wants to organize expeditions and accept travel friction. Enshrouded suits friends who want to fight together and spend substantial time improving a shared base. Dragonwilds is the choice when the group is excited by skills, spells, potions, quests and RuneScape setting.

For seven to ten players

Valheim and Enshrouded remain options in the listed comparison; Dragonwilds tops out at six. Valheim supports up to 10, while Enshrouded supports up to 16, so check your actual roster before buying. A game that cannot host everyone creates a practical problem no combat or crafting system can solve.

For eleven to sixteen players

Enshrouded is the only one of these three with a listed capacity in that range. Its 1–16-player figure is the deciding fact for a large group, assuming the whole party wants its action-RPG and building focus.

Group size is not the same as group compatibility. A six-player Dragonwilds party may be more satisfying than a 16-player Enshrouded server if everyone shares the same preferred progression style. Agree on whether the group wants open-ended exploration, base construction and combat, or skill-driven RPG advancement before choosing.

Travel is the hidden tie-breaker

Fast travel changes how a survival game feels because it determines whether distance is an obstacle, a progression reward or a resource cost.

Valheim’s restricted portals keep logistics in the foreground

Because player-crafted portals have item limits, a portal network does not erase the need to plan cargo and routes. Choose Valheim if you want distant regions to remain operational problems you solve through preparation.

Enshrouded turns fast travel into an unlockable convenience

Enshrouded’s fast-travel points are unlocked as you progress. This model rewards exploration with movement options and can make later trips more efficient without making every location immediately convenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dragonwilds makes portals part of magical resource management

Dragonwilds portals require runes. Travel therefore connects the survival loop to magical preparation: returning quickly depends on having the required resource, not merely discovering a destination.

If you dislike backtracking and want movement to become easier through progression, Enshrouded is the cleanest fit. If you want travel decisions to remain a central challenge, choose Valheim. If you like the idea of paying for convenience through a magic-linked resource, Dragonwilds offers the most distinctive model.

Building, combat and progression: choose the activity you will repeat

Choose Valheim for the journey between milestones

Valheim’s appeal is less about a single headline feature than the way exploration, preparation and return trips reinforce one another. Building and combat support the expedition loop. It is a good first survival game for someone who wants a world to learn gradually rather than a tightly directed checklist.

Choose Enshrouded for a combat-and-construction rhythm

Enshrouded puts two repeatable activities in the foreground: fighting through encounters and improving the spaces you build. If your ideal session alternates between an action-RPG outing and a substantial construction project, it is the most direct match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Dragonwilds for layered character progression

Dragonwilds adds RuneScape-flavored skills, magic and potions to survival crafting, with quests providing additional direction. This is the best fit if “getting better” should mean more than stronger equipment: you want a broader set of abilities and systems to develop.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds launch and platform facts

Jagex announced that Dragonwilds left Early Access for full launch on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Jagex’s official FAQ also lists Nintendo Switch 2. Since the full-launch date has passed, buyers should check the current store listing for the edition and platform they intend to use.

Jagex reported more than one million Early Access sales in 2026. That is a publisher-reported sales figure, not an independent review score or a guarantee that the game matches every player’s preferred survival style.

For Valheim and Enshrouded, confirm the current platform, edition and cross-play details on the storefront you plan to use. Those details are not established by the comparison information above, and platform compatibility can determine the choice before mechanics do.

A practical decision process before you buy

  1. Count your regular players. If you need 11–16 simultaneous players, choose Enshrouded from this shortlist. If you have seven to ten, Valheim or Enshrouded fit the listed capacities; a group of six or fewer can consider all three.
  2. Pick your preferred travel problem. Select Valheim for item-limited player portals, Enshrouded for unlockable fast-travel points, or Dragonwilds for rune-funded portals.
  3. Choose the progression language you enjoy. Expedition milestones point to Valheim, action-RPG combat and construction point to Enshrouded, and skills, magic, potions and quests point to Dragonwilds.
  4. Decide how much direction you want. Valheim is the most self-directed option in this comparison. Dragonwilds is the clearest choice for a guided survival-RPG structure. Enshrouded sits between those poles, with exploration supporting a combat-and-building focus.
  5. Verify the platform and current edition. Dragonwilds has the stated full-launch platforms and date above; check live storefront information for the other games and for any platform-specific requirements.
  6. Agree on the group’s first-session goal. Decide whether the opening session is an expedition, a base-building and combat run, or a skill-and-quest progression session. This simple agreement prevents a mismatch where one player wants to roam while everyone else expects to build.

Common choice mistakes

  • Choosing only by player count. A larger cap matters only if your group needs it. For smaller parties, the travel and progression models are more important.
  • Assuming every portal works the same way. Valheim restricts items, Dragonwilds requires runes, and Enshrouded uses unlockable fast-travel points. These rules alter the amount of preparation and backtracking in ordinary play.
  • Buying a building-focused game when the group wants quests and skills. Enshrouded’s construction emphasis is a strength only if the group enjoys spending time on bases. Dragonwilds is the better match for RuneScape-style skills, magic and potion-making.
  • Expecting a guided RPG from the most self-directed option. Valheim is recommended here for players who want to set their own expedition goals, not for someone who needs constant quest direction.
  • Skipping platform checks. Dragonwilds’ stated PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch, plus the Nintendo Switch 2 listing in its FAQ, should be checked against the exact device you own. Verify current platform and edition information for every title before purchase.

The short answer

Start with Valheim for a slower, self-directed Viking expedition where portal restrictions make logistics meaningful. Start with Enshrouded for the strongest combination of action-RPG combat, construction and group capacity. Start with RuneScape: Dragonwilds for skills, magic, potions, quests and RuneScape context in a survival-crafting format.
