To claim an open-world RPG through PlayStation Plus, sign in to the account with the membership, open the PlayStation Plus hub, find the title under Monthly Games or Game Catalog, and select Download. On PS4, a monthly game uses Add to Library before Download. Essential covers monthly games; Extra and Premium are required for Game Catalog downloads. The game costs no additional charge while the applicable membership is active, but catalog titles can leave the service.
What “free” means on PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus does not turn every included game into permanent ownership. “Free” means there is no additional game charge beyond the subscription during the period covered by your entitlement.

- Monthly Games: You can add the rotating monthly selection to your library and download it while your PlayStation Plus membership remains active.
- Game Catalog: Extra and Premium members can download eligible catalog games, but a title may have a published removal date. Access ends when the game leaves the catalog, even if your membership continues.
- Classics Catalog: Premium includes eligible classic games under the same subscription-based access model; this is separate from the modern open-world RPG workflow described here.
If you cancel or let the membership lapse, monthly games become unavailable until you reactivate an eligible membership. A catalog game can also become unavailable because Sony removes it from the catalog. A download already installed on the console does not override either restriction.

The entitlement type matters more than the word “free.” An open-world RPG listed in Monthly Games can be claimed with Essential. The same genre of game listed in Game Catalog requires Extra or Premium.

Check whether the RPG is actually available
Catalog contents differ by country and can change over time. Check the live PlayStation Plus listing on your own account before assuming that a named game is still downloadable.
Examples reported in 2026
A PlayStation Blog feature dated May 22, 2026, named Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 among open-world games in the Game Catalog. A July 15, 2026, catalog announcement added Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Rise of the Ronin as open-world examples. The announcement gave availability dates that vary between the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and other markets.
Those examples explain what to look for; they are not a promise that every title remains in every country. A game page that shows a removal date, a different release date, or no catalog entitlement for your account takes precedence over an older announcement.

What to prepare before downloading
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the active PlayStation Plus membership.
- Confirm the membership tier. Essential is enough for Monthly Games; Extra or Premium is required for Game Catalog titles.
- Use the console associated with that account, or sign in to the same account in a web browser or the PlayStation App for a remote download.
- Check that the title is available in your country and has not passed its catalog removal date.
- Make sure the console has enough free storage for the game installation.
A physical disc, separate controller purchase, or external solid-state drive is not required to claim the PlayStation Plus entitlement. You do need a compatible console, an internet connection for the download, and enough local storage to install it.
Claim a Monthly Game on PS5
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account holding the PlayStation Plus membership.
- From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Benefits, then open Monthly Games.
- Choose the open-world RPG or other game you want.
- Select Download. The PS5 adds the entitlement to the account and begins downloading the game.
The PS5 workflow presented by Sony uses Download directly for a Monthly Game. If the game page instead identifies the title as a catalog game, leave Monthly Games and follow the Game Catalog procedure below; the membership requirement is different.
Claim a Game Catalog RPG on PS5
- Sign in to the account with an active Extra or Premium membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS5 Games home screen.
- Select Benefits, then choose Game Catalog.
- Find the open-world RPG and open its game page.
- Check the page for your market’s availability and any removal date.
- Select Download and choose the installation location if the console presents more than one available location.
If the page does not offer Download, do not treat that as a normal delay. First verify that the account has Extra or Premium, that the title is still in the catalog for your country, and that the console has enough storage.
Claim a Monthly Game on PS4
- Sign in to the PS4 with the PlayStation Plus account.
- From the PS4 function screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Monthly Games.
- Open the game page for the RPG you want.
- Select Add to Library.
- After the entitlement is added, select Download.
The important PS4 distinction is the extra Add to Library step. Selecting Download without first adding the Monthly Game to the library is not the workflow Sony specifies for PS4.
Download a Game Catalog RPG on PS4
- Sign in to the account with Extra or Premium.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS4 function screen.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Choose the open-world RPG and review its availability for your region.
- Select Download.
Unlike the PS4 Monthly Games path, the Game Catalog path does not require an Add to Library step in Sony’s instructions. If the button is missing, use the checks in the troubleshooting section rather than purchasing the game separately before confirming your entitlement.
Start the download remotely
Sony also supports starting a PlayStation Plus download from a web browser or the PlayStation App. This is useful when the console is switched on or in a state that can receive remote commands and you want the game ready before you sit down to play.
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account that holds the membership.
- Open the game’s PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus listing in a web browser or in the PlayStation App.
- Confirm that the page identifies the game as included with your membership and that it is available in your market.
- Select the option to start the remote download.
- When you return to the console, check the download queue and available storage.
The remote method does not change the entitlement rules. Essential still covers Monthly Games only, while Extra or Premium is required for a Game Catalog title. A remote request also cannot bypass a regional restriction, catalog removal, expired membership, or insufficient storage.

What to do when Download is unavailable
The game is asking you to upgrade
That usually indicates an entitlement mismatch. If the title is in Game Catalog, Essential does not provide access; upgrade to Extra or Premium or select a Monthly Game instead. If you already have Extra or Premium, confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns that tier rather than a different local user.

Catalog availability is market- and date-sensitive. Search the live catalog while signed in, check the title’s listed availability, and compare it with the country attached to the PlayStation account. A game announced for one region or date may not be available in another.
The catalog game has a removal date
A removal date means the game is conditional access, not permanent ownership. Download it before that date if you intend to play it, and understand that an installation does not preserve access after removal.
The membership appears inactive
Verify the subscription status on the account that selected the game. Monthly Games and catalog downloads both depend on an active membership, with the tier determining which entitlement is available.
The console will not start the installation
Check free storage first. Then confirm that the console is online, the correct account is signed in, the game is still available in your region, and the membership tier matches the game’s category. The same checks apply when a remote browser or PlayStation App request does not appear in the console’s download queue.
Downloading versus streaming with Premium
Premium includes streaming for eligible catalog games, but streaming is not the same as downloading. Downloading installs the game on the PS4 or PS5 and uses local storage. Streaming runs an eligible title from Sony’s service and depends on a broadband connection that meets Sony’s requirements.
Use Download when you want a local installation or when your connection is unsuitable for streaming. Use streaming only when the specific catalog game supports it in your market and your Premium membership is active. Streaming availability and catalog availability are separate checks; a title can be downloadable without being streamable, or vice versa.
What happens after you claim the game?
Monthly Games
Once a Monthly Game is added to your library, Sony says you can download and play it at any time as long as you maintain an active membership plan. If the membership expires, access is suspended. Renewing an eligible membership restores the subscription-based entitlement for the claimed Monthly Game.
Game Catalog
A Game Catalog title remains playable only while both conditions are true: your Extra or Premium membership is active, and Sony still lists the game in the catalog for your market. A catalog removal can end access even when the subscription itself has not expired.
Changing consoles
The entitlement belongs to the PlayStation account, not to a particular download. Sign in with that account on a compatible PS4 or PS5 and use the relevant PlayStation Plus section. The available platform version and catalog listing still depend on Sony’s regional and service rules.
A practical decision sequence
- Identify the listing: Is the RPG under Monthly Games or Game Catalog?
- Match the tier: Essential works for Monthly Games; Extra or Premium is required for Game Catalog.
- Check the market: Verify that the title is listed for your country and note any removal date.
- Use the platform path: PS5 uses the Benefits menu; PS4 uses the PlayStation Plus menu from the function screen.
- Use the correct button: PS5 Monthly Games uses Download; PS4 Monthly Games uses Add to Library, then Download.
- Choose delivery: Download on the console, or start a remote download from the web browser or PlayStation App.
- Resolve blockers: Check account, tier, region, removal date, internet connection, and storage if Download is unavailable.
The shortest accurate answer is therefore conditional: claim a Monthly Game with Essential, or download a Game Catalog open-world RPG with Extra or Premium, while the membership and the title’s catalog availability last.
