Then open the base game in your Library, check its DLC area or Properties > DLC, and install the item if necessary. Claiming ownership and downloading the files are separate states. A Steam Free Weekend is different: it grants temporary access to a game and does not create permanent ownership after the event ends.
What counts as free DLC on Steam?
A limited-time free-DLC promotion gives an account a downloadable-content license at no charge during a defined offer window. The Store listing should show a zero price and an action such as Add to Account, Claim, Play, or Install. The exact wording varies by product and by whether the base game is already installed.

Do not treat every free-looking Steam page as permanent DLC. A percentage discount still requires a purchase. A demo is a separate, restricted package. A Free Weekend temporarily unlocks an eligible game; it is not free-to-keep downloadable content. Before clicking anything, identify the package and the type of access it grants.

Before you claim: check the four things that determine eligibility
1. Ownership status
Stay signed in to the Steam account that should receive the license. If a family member, secondary account, or work computer is signed in, the claim can land on the wrong account. The account shown in Steam and the account used for the Store transaction must match.

2. The displayed price and wording
Read the price area rather than relying on a headline, social-media post, or search result. A true free claim displays a zero price or equivalent no-charge wording and presents a way to add the package to the account. If Steam shows a currency amount, a percentage-off label, a purchase button, or only a “play now” trial message, you are not looking at a permanent free-DLC claim.
3. The exact deadline
Record the end date and time shown on the current Store page. Promotion windows are specific to the offer and can change. Do not substitute a date from an old article, a screenshot, a regional post, or a countdown on another site. The live listing is the authority for whether the claim is still active.
4. The base-game requirement
Some DLC requires ownership of the base game. The Store page or the DLC’s description should indicate that relationship. If the game is not owned where the offer requires it, the claim control may be unavailable or the content may not become usable after claiming. Verify the base game is owned on the same account before troubleshooting the installation.

How to claim the DLC before the offer expires
- Open the current Steam Store page. Navigate from Steam or use the promotion’s direct Store listing while the offer is active. Avoid relying on a cached page or an old announcement.
- Confirm that it is a no-cost DLC offer. Check that the listing identifies downloadable content and shows a zero price or explicit free-claim wording. Distinguish it from a discount, demo, or Free Weekend package.
- Read the deadline on that page. Note the exact date and time as displayed by Steam. If the page no longer shows the free price or claim control, treat the promotion as ended or changed; do not assume a post-deadline claim will be honored.
- Use the available claim control. Select Add to Account, Claim, Play, or Install, depending on the listing. Remain signed in throughout the process. If Steam opens a confirmation step, complete it rather than closing the window after the first click.
- Wait for Steam to finish the account action. A brief page refresh, a Library notification, or an installation prompt can follow. The important result is that the DLC is associated with this account, not merely that the Store page was opened.
- Check the base game in your Library. Select the game for which the DLC was offered and open its DLC management view. Confirm that the claimed item appears there before assuming the process failed.
You generally do not need to finish downloading the files before the promotional deadline once the DLC has been successfully added to the account. Steam treats owned DLC as part of the game’s content and can install it when the game is installed. Because offers can change at the deadline, complete the account claim first and verify the ownership entry rather than leaving the page open with an unfinished action.
How to find and install claimed DLC in Steam Library
Use the game’s DLC management view
- Open Library and select the base game.
- Open the game’s management controls. Depending on the Steam client view, use the gear icon on the game’s Library page, open the game’s DLC section, or right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Choose DLC in the Properties window.
- Find the claimed item in the list and check whether it is enabled or installed. If it is listed but not installed, enable it or start the installation from this view.
- Let Steam complete the download. Keep the client online until the download and installation indicators finish.
- Reopen the DLC list and confirm that the item now shows as installed or available. Then launch the game and look for the content in the location specified by the DLC description.
Steam Support’s documented navigation is Library > right-click the game > Properties > DLC. The gear menu and a game-specific DLC section provide alternate paths in the current Library layout. Labels can vary slightly between client views, but the DLC management list is the place to distinguish an owned item from one that has merely been advertised.
What “owned,” “installed,” and “available in-game” mean

Where bonus DLC files are stored
Soundtracks, artbooks, manuals, and similar extras may not appear as a new in-game menu. After Steam reports the DLC as installed, open the game’s local folder:

- In Library, select the base game.
- Open the gear icon or right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Local Files.
- Choose Browse to open the installed files in your operating system’s file manager.
- Look for the folder or file format named in the DLC description. Audio extras may use music files, while artbooks may be supplied as document or image files.
The absence of a new in-game button does not by itself mean the bonus failed to install. Bonus content is often delivered as files in the game directory rather than as a gameplay feature. Conversely, finding a folder is not proof that the account owns the DLC; use the DLC tab and the Store account state for entitlement, then use Local Files to confirm the downloaded material.

Do you have to install the DLC before the deadline?
The deadline governs the promotional claim, not necessarily the completion of the download. First add the DLC to the correct account while the Store page still offers it. Once Steam shows the item as owned, installation can be handled from the game’s DLC settings when convenient. Steam’s documentation describes owned DLC as integral to the game, with automatic updating and installation when the game itself is installed.
That does not make an unfinished claim safe. Opening the page, starting a download, or leaving a checkout window open is not the same as recording ownership. Before the deadline arrives, verify the DLC appears under the base game’s DLC list. If the download is interrupted after ownership is recorded, resume it from that list rather than trying to reclaim the expired promotion.

How a Free Weekend differs from free-to-keep DLC
Steam defines a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free. It is a temporary game package, not a DLC license that remains yours permanently.
When the event ends, Steam removes the free package from the Store page. Participants retain a Library listing, but they can only uninstall the game unless they purchase the full version. Therefore, do not use the Free Weekend workflow as evidence that you permanently claimed DLC. Check the product type and the ownership result shown by Steam.

Troubleshooting: the DLC is missing or will not install
The Store page no longer offers the free claim
Refresh the page and check the displayed price and control. If the zero price and claim action are gone, treat the promotion as ended or changed. Steam does not guarantee retroactive eligibility, so do not expect a support workaround to recreate an expired offer.

The DLC is not in the Library
- Confirm that the Store and Library are signed in to the same Steam account.
- Refresh the Library and reopen the base game’s DLC view.
- Verify that you completed the claim action rather than only opening the Store page.
- Check whether the offer requires ownership of the base game and whether that game is owned on this account.
- Return to the live Store listing and compare its current status with the account’s DLC list.
The DLC is listed but not installed
Open Properties > DLC, enable the item, and allow Steam to download it. Reopen the DLC list after the transfer finishes. If the game is installed on another library location, check that Steam is managing the installation for the same base-game copy.
The DLC shows as installed but the game does not show it
First confirm that the package is the correct DLC for the installed base game. Then restart or relaunch the game after Steam finishes the download and check the game’s own content menus. Some DLC is gated behind a campaign, map, save, or other in-game condition described by the developer; installation alone does not necessarily place a bonus directly in the opening screen.
Bonus files cannot be found
Use the game’s Properties > Local Files > Browse path and inspect the folders and file formats associated with the bonus. If the DLC tab does not show the item as installed, return to DLC management and trigger the installation first. If it is owned and installed but the expected files are absent, refresh the Library and check the local folder again before assuming the promotion was not applied.
A reliable deadline-day checklist
- Open the live Steam Store page, not an old deal post.
- Confirm the item is DLC and the price is zero.
- Read and note the exact displayed end date and time.
- Check that the signed-in account is the one that should own the content.
- Verify any base-game ownership requirement.
- Click the page’s claim, add-to-account, play, or install control and complete any confirmation.
- Open Library and the base game’s DLC section or Properties > DLC.
- Confirm the item is listed as owned; installation can follow after that entitlement is recorded.
- Enable or install the DLC, wait for the download to finish, and check the list again.
- For soundtracks, artbooks, and other extras, use Properties > Local Files > Browse to locate the downloaded files.
What to remember about Steam’s free-DLC process
The decisive event is the account claim on the live Store page before the offer’s stated deadline. Installation is a second step managed from the base game’s DLC settings. A zero-price DLC license can remain available after the promotion ends, while a Free Weekend ends with temporary play access and does not become permanent ownership. Checking the account, the base-game requirement, the deadline, and the DLC list in that order prevents the most common mistakes.
