The important distinction is between claiming and installing. Claiming records the entitlement on your Epic account. Installing merely downloads the files to a device. If storage, bandwidth, or time is limited, claim the game first and install it later.

An Epic Games account
You need to create or sign in to an Epic Games account before the store can attach the game to your library. Use the account you intend to keep using; the entitlement belongs to the account that completes the claim.

Two-factor authentication
Epic requires two-factor authentication to claim a free giveaway. If two-factor authentication is not enabled, complete that security setup in your Epic account before returning to the store. Keep access to the chosen authentication method because you may need a verification code during sign-in or account changes.
A current connection to the official store
The giveaway listing changes on a schedule, so open the live Epic Games Store Free Games page rather than relying on an old article, screenshot, or social-media post. The page also lists other no-cost content, which is why identifying the listing type matters.
Step-by-step: claim the weekly giveaway
- Sign in or create your account. Open Epic’s account sign-in page and use the account where you want the game stored. If you are new to Epic, finish account creation first.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Epic states that two-factor authentication is required to claim the giveaway. Complete the prompts in your account’s security settings and return to the store after activation.
- Open the official Free Games page. Look for the promotion currently marked as a giveaway. Because the page combines several kinds of free listings, do not assume every item labeled “free” is the rotating weekly offer.
- Open the giveaway listing. Select the title to view its product page. Confirm that the page identifies the active promotion and that the offer is still within its claim period.
- Choose Get or Claim. The exact button wording can vary with the storefront interface. Select the action that begins the free acquisition process.
- Complete the zero-price checkout or confirmation. Follow the storefront’s checkout screens until the order or entitlement is confirmed at a zero price. Stop only after the store reports that the transaction or claim succeeded.
- Verify the library entry. Open your Epic library and search for the title. Seeing it listed there is the practical confirmation that the entitlement was added to the account.
- Install now or later. Installation is optional during the promotion. You can download the game later from the library without losing the claim.
How the Thursday rotation works
Epic Games Player Support describes the regular cadence as one new free game every Thursday at 8 AM PT. The same guidance says you have seven days to claim it before the offer rotates. Treat those figures as the normal schedule for the program, not as a guarantee that every special promotion will follow an identical timetable.
The title displayed on the page is volatile. A guide cannot safely name a “current” game for long, so check the live Free Games page when you are ready to claim. If the listing shows an end time, use that storefront information as the immediate deadline.

Claiming early in the window avoids the most common timing mistake: waiting until the final hours and discovering that authentication, sign-in, or checkout still needs attention. You do not gain an ownership advantage by downloading first; the account claim is the step that matters.
Free to keep, free to play, and demos are different
The official Free Games page promotes a weekly giveaway but also mixes in permanent free-to-play games and demos. These categories can appear beside one another, yet they create different expectations about access and ownership.

When a reader asks whether an Epic game is “free forever,” the answer depends on which of these listings they selected. The permanent-retention statement applies to a giveaway that was successfully claimed, not automatically to every free-to-play title or demo shown on the page.
Do you need to download the game immediately?
No. Epic’s support guidance explicitly says that once the game is claimed, it is yours permanently even if you do not download it right away. The library record is the important checkpoint.

This makes “claim now, install later” the safest routine when you have a slow connection, limited storage, or no time to play. After claiming, you can wait for a larger drive, a faster network, or a convenient installation time. Avoid canceling the checkout before the confirmation appears; an uncompleted checkout is not the same as a recorded entitlement.
What happens if you miss the deadline?
If the seven-day claim period expires before you complete the acquisition, Epic says the title cannot be added for free afterward. The expired offer is not retroactively granted merely because it appeared on the Free Games page during an earlier week.
Your practical options are to watch the official Free Games page for future promotions and to check Epic’s special offers when they appear. A missed giveaway may or may not return, and the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed rerun schedule. Do not assume that downloading an installer, adding a shortcut, or bookmarking the product page counts as a claim; the entitlement must be completed through the storefront.

Where you can access the offer
The store’s free-game app is available globally on Android and on iPhone and iPad in supported regions, according to Epic’s storefront information. Platform and regional availability can change, so use the live official page or app listing for the current availability rather than relying on a fixed promise.

Check the confirmation screen
The final checkout or confirmation screen should indicate that the zero-price acquisition succeeded. If the page returns to the product listing without any success message, treat the status as unconfirmed until you check the library.
Search the library
Open your Epic library and search by the game’s title. A library entry is the clearest account-level evidence that the claim was recorded. You can leave the game uninstalled; the presence of the title in the library is what matters for later installation.

If the title is missing, first verify that you are signed in with the same Epic account used during checkout. Multiple accounts, saved browser sessions, or a switch between mobile and PC sign-ins can make a successful claim appear to have disappeared when it was actually attached elsewhere.

Troubleshooting common claim problems
The claim button is unavailable
- Check whether the seven-day promotion has ended or has not started yet.
- Confirm that the listing is a rotating giveaway rather than a demo or a different free item.
- Sign in to the account that has two-factor authentication enabled.
- Reload the live Free Games page and reopen the product listing.
Two-factor authentication blocks the claim
- Finish enabling two-factor authentication in the Epic account before attempting checkout again.
- Use the verification method configured for that account and enter the current code when prompted.
- If you cannot access the configured method, recover account access through Epic’s official support process before the promotion expires.
The checkout does not show a zero price
- Confirm that you opened the active giveaway and not a paid edition, add-on, or another product linked from the page.
- Do not complete the transaction until the storefront shows the expected zero-price confirmation.
- Return to the Free Games page and open the giveaway again if the product page has changed.
The game is not in the library after checkout
- Look for a completed confirmation rather than relying on a button click alone.
- Sign out and back in to refresh the account session, then search the library again.
- Check whether a different Epic account was active in another browser tab or on another device.
- If the promotion is still active and the entitlement remains absent, contact Epic’s official player support with the account and transaction details available to you.
Account and security practices
Because the entitlement is tied to an Epic account, account security is part of keeping the game. Use two-factor authentication as Epic requires, protect the account credentials, and do not share verification codes. Claim through the official Epic storefront or its official app instead of entering account details into an unofficial giveaway page.
Keep a record of the account email or sign-in method associated with the library. If your household uses several accounts, decide in advance which one should own each giveaway; moving a claimed entitlement to another account should not be assumed.
A repeatable weekly routine
- On or after Thursday at 8 AM PT, open the official Free Games page.
- Identify the listing marked as the rotating giveaway, separating it from free-to-play games and demos.
- Sign in to the intended Epic account and confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Open the listing, select Get or Claim, and finish the zero-price checkout.
- Search the library for the title and keep it there, whether or not you install it immediately.
- If you miss the window, move on to the next promotion rather than expecting a retroactive free claim.
This routine takes advantage of the program’s account-based nature: the time-sensitive action is the claim, while the download can be scheduled around your storage and connection limits.
