What you get and when you can claim it
Massive Monster announced that Cult of the Lamb comes to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026. Existing owners of the Nintendo Switch edition can upgrade for free. Anyone who does not already own the Switch version must purchase the game rather than claim the owner upgrade.
The developer’s announcement states: “CULT OF THE LAMB comes to NINTENDO SWITCH 2 on OCTOBER 22ND! Cultists that already own COTL on Switch 1 can upgrade for FREE, while those that don’t will have to pay the price.” The date is the release date for the Switch 2 version, so the free option should not be expected in the eShop before October 22.

- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
Nintendo’s store listing identifies the Switch 2 release as supported software and lists Save Data Cloud support. The exact wording of the eShop button can differ by region and by whether the storefront has refreshed your ownership record; Nintendo has not published one universal label. Look for the no-charge upgrade or download choice while signed in with the account that bought the Switch game.
Eligibility: which Nintendo Account receives the upgrade?
Existing owners
Eligibility follows the Nintendo Account that owns the Nintendo Switch version. Sign in on Switch 2 with that account before opening the game’s eShop page. If several users are present on the console, select the user tied to the purchase rather than a different local profile.
People who do not own the Switch version
The free-upgrade entitlement is for existing owners. A person who has never purchased the Nintendo Switch edition will see a purchase option for the Switch 2 game instead of an owner upgrade. The available data does not establish a universal price, so check your regional eShop for the current amount.

On October 22, open Nintendo eShop on Switch 2, search for Cult of the Lamb, and open the official listing. If the page still shows only a purchase button, first confirm that you are using the purchasing Nintendo Account and that the console is connected to the internet. Storefront availability can change as the release rolls out in each region.

- Build your flock: Collect and use resources to build new structures, perform dark rituals to appease the gods, and give sermons to reinforce the faith of your flock.
- Destroy the non-believers: Explore a sprawling, randomly generated world, fight off hordes of enemies and defeat rival cult leaders in order to absorb their power and assert your cult's dominance.
- Spread the word: Train your flock and embark on a quest to explore and discover the secrets of five mysterious regions. Cleanse the non-believers, spread enlightenment and perform mystical rituals on the journey to become the mighty lamb god.
Claim the free Switch 2 version
- Wait until the October 22, 2026 release date has arrived in your region.
- Connect Switch 2 to the internet and sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the Nintendo Switch version.
- Open Nintendo eShop and search for Cult of the Lamb.
- Open the game’s listing and check that the active user is the owner account.
- Select the free upgrade or download option displayed for that account. The label may vary by region or storefront state.
- Allow the Switch 2 version to download and install, then launch it once the installation completes.
Owning the original game is the key eligibility check. Buying or installing the Switch version on Switch 2 under a different Nintendo Account will not make that other account eligible for the owner upgrade.
Choose the right save-transfer method
You have two Nintendo-supported routes. The nearby individual transfer is the focused option when you only need your Cult of the Lamb save. A full System Transfer is intended for moving a broader console setup during Switch 2’s initial configuration.
| Method | When to use it | Internet and console requirements | Nintendo Switch Online | Important risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual save transfer | Move the Cult of the Lamb save between two consoles | Both consoles online, nearby, and using users linked to the same Nintendo Account | Not required | Choosing overwrite permanently deletes the existing target save |
| Full System Transfer | Move compatible software and save data while setting up Switch 2 | Same Nintendo Account; local or server-based transfer, depending on the setup path | Not the requirement for the transfer itself | The server method can initialize the source console; source-data deletion depends on transfer type |
| Save Data Cloud restoration | Restore a supported cloud-backed save | Cloud data must already exist for the game and account | Required for cloud restoration | Cloud availability does not replace the nearby-transfer account and console checks |
Recommended method: transfer only your Cult of the Lamb save
Nintendo’s individual transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It does require both consoles to be connected to the internet, close enough to communicate during the process, and configured with users linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prepare both consoles
- Update the old Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 so each is running current system software.
- Connect both consoles to the internet.
- Keep the consoles near one another for the entire transfer.
- Identify the user profile on the old Switch that contains your Cult of the Lamb save.
- Confirm that the corresponding user on Switch 2 is linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Install or claim the Switch 2 version before launching it for the first time, if you have not already done so.
Send the save from the old Switch
- On the old Nintendo Switch, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Choose the user whose Cult of the Lamb save you want to move.
- Follow the on-screen prompt that identifies the receiving console.
Receive the save on Switch 2
- On Switch 2, open System Settings.
- Go to Data Management.
- Open Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Receive Save Data.
- Confirm the source console and the user shown by Nintendo’s transfer screen.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before closing either console or launching the game.
After the transfer completes, start the Switch 2 edition and select the transferred user. The game should then use that user’s moved save rather than starting an unrelated new file.

Understand the overwrite warning before confirming
If Switch 2 already has Cult of the Lamb save data for the same software, Nintendo can offer a choice to cancel or overwrite. Overwriting permanently deletes the save currently on the target console, and Nintendo says that overwritten target data cannot be recovered.
- Check the user name shown on both consoles.
- Verify that the old Switch contains the progress you intend to move.
- Decide whether the existing Switch 2 save is disposable before selecting overwrite.
- Choose cancel if the target save may be needed or if the account shown is not the one you intended.
Do not treat the overwrite prompt as a duplicate-installation question. It concerns the save already stored on Switch 2, not whether the game itself is installed.
When a full System Transfer makes sense
Nintendo also provides a full System Transfer during Switch 2 setup. It can move compatible software and save data as part of setting up the new console, making it appropriate when you are replacing the old Switch or want to migrate a larger portion of the console configuration rather than one game.

Local transfer
A local System Transfer keeps the two consoles together while compatible data moves from the source to Switch 2. This is the closer match to the individual save-transfer experience when you have both devices available and want to avoid uploading the source data to Nintendo’s servers.

Server transfer
The server-based route uploads data and can initialize the source console. Because the source may be initialized, use this option only when you intend to move the console setup and are prepared for the source-data consequences described by Nintendo for that transfer type.
Account and deletion considerations
Nintendo requires the same Nintendo Account for the source and destination in a System Transfer. The amount of source-console data deleted depends on the transfer type. Read each confirmation screen carefully and do not choose a full transfer merely to move one Cult of the Lamb save; the individual method is more limited in scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save Data Cloud and Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo’s Cult of the Lamb listing shows Save Data Cloud support. Cloud restoration requires Nintendo Switch Online. That subscription requirement applies to retrieving a save from cloud storage, not to the nearby manual transfer described above.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the nearby transfer when you have both consoles and do not subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Use cloud restoration only when the account has cloud data available and you have the required Nintendo Switch Online membership. A cloud copy is not automatically the same as the most recent local save, so check which version you intend to restore before confirming any restoration action.

Troubleshooting the most common problems
The free upgrade does not appear
- Check the date: the Switch 2 version releases on October 22, 2026.
- Open the listing while signed in with the Nintendo Account that owns the Switch version.
- Confirm that you are viewing the official Cult of the Lamb listing for Switch 2, not a different edition or a search result for the original software.
- Reconnect Switch 2 to the internet and reopen Nintendo eShop so the ownership state can refresh.
- Remember that a non-owner account will receive a purchase option rather than the free owner upgrade.
The available button text is not universal, so do not rely on one exact phrase. The relevant test is whether the account is offered a no-charge upgrade or download.
“Send Save Data” or “Receive Save Data” cannot find the other console
- Make sure both consoles are powered on, online, and physically nearby.
- Check that each console is using the same Nintendo Account-linked user for the transfer.
- Install pending system updates on both consoles, then reopen the transfer menus.
- Start the send operation on the old Switch and the receive operation on Switch 2 through the exact System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data path.
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not a fix for a nearby-transfer discovery problem; the individual method does not require that service.
The transfer asks whether to overwrite
That prompt means Switch 2 already contains save data for the software. Cancel if you need to preserve that target save. Confirm overwrite only after checking the user and accepting that the target save will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
You were planning to use a cloud save
Cloud restoration and nearby transfer are separate routes. Cloud restoration requires Nintendo Switch Online and an available cloud copy. If both consoles are present, the nearby method avoids that subscription requirement and follows the direct send-and-receive process.
You are setting up Switch 2 from scratch
If your goal is to move many games and compatible data, consider Nintendo’s System Transfer during initial setup. If your only goal is the Cult of the Lamb save, finish setup and use the individual transfer instead. Be especially cautious with the server option because it can initialize the source console.
A quick decision checklist
- Already own the Switch game? Use the owner Nintendo Account to claim the free Switch 2 upgrade after October 22, 2026.
- Have both consoles nearby? Choose the individual send-and-receive transfer; Nintendo Switch Online is not required.
- Does Switch 2 already contain a save? Cancel or verify carefully before any overwrite; overwritten target data cannot be recovered.
- Moving your entire console setup? Use System Transfer during Switch 2 setup and read the source-initialization warning for the selected transfer type.
- Relying on cloud storage? Confirm that cloud data exists and that you have Nintendo Switch Online before attempting restoration.
What to do after the move
Launch the Switch 2 version with the same user whose save was transferred. If the expected progress is not shown, close the game, return to the Home menu, and verify that you selected the correct user profile before starting again. Do not overwrite another target save while troubleshooting; first stop and recheck the account and transfer result.
The simplest safe sequence is therefore: claim the free version with the purchasing account, transfer the save through Nintendo’s nearby Data Management menu, and accept an overwrite only when you have deliberately chosen to discard the existing Switch 2 save.
