What to do first when a Game Boy game will not start
- Power the system off completely. Do not remove or insert a Game Pak while the Game Boy is on.
- Remove the cartridge gently. Hold the cartridge by its shell, not by the edge connector. Never twist, force, or jam it.
- Check the orientation. Reinsert the Game Pak in the direction intended for your Game Boy model and push it in fully without excessive pressure.
- Inspect the edge connector. Look for lint, dust, corrosion-like residue, or other foreign material. Do not touch the connector contacts with your fingers.
- Keep all liquid away. The console and cartridge must remain dry, and the system should be powered off and unplugged before any external cleaning.
- Try another known-good Game Pak. This comparison is the quickest way to separate a cartridge fault from a console-reading problem.
If the game still does not read after these checks, stop rather than opening the cartridge or console. Nintendo directs owners with unresolved reading errors to customer support or a repair centre.

How to clean a Game Boy cartridge safely
The safest approach is external inspection and dry cleaning only. Nintendo’s Game Boy Family precautions specifically say not to disassemble the Game Pak or Game Boy components, touch the connector contacts, blow on them, or let them get wet. The same guidance says, “Do not clean with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.”

1. Prepare a dry, powered-off workspace
- Switch the Game Boy off completely.
- Unplug the system if it is connected to external power or accessories.
- Work on a clean, dry surface with good lighting.
- Set the cartridge down by its plastic shell, away from liquids, food, and loose debris.
Do not spray cleaner onto the Game Pak or the Game Boy. Do not pour liquid into a slot, and do not submerge either component. Nintendo’s general handheld-care instructions require the product to be completely dry before use.
2. Inspect the cartridge edge connector
The edge connector is the row of electrical contacts that enters the Game Boy’s cartridge slot. Hold the Game Pak by its plastic edges and examine that row for visible foreign material. Avoid rubbing the contacts with bare fingers; skin oils can leave residue and the contacts are easy to contaminate while handling.
Inspection is useful even when the cartridge looks clean. Dust or lint can be lodged between contacts, and a cartridge can fail to start because it is not seated correctly rather than because it has an obvious stain. Do not use your breath to clear debris: Nintendo explicitly advises against blowing on the connector.
3. Use Nintendo’s dry-cleaning options
Nintendo recommends regularly using the Game Boy Cleaning Wand to help prevent the edge connectors from becoming dirty. If you have that tool, use it as intended for the relevant Game Boy family cartridge and do not force it into the slot.
Nintendo’s game-reading support guidance also says that a dirty game connector may be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. Use a clean, lint-free portion of the cloth and make light, controlled passes over the cartridge connector while holding the shell. The cloth should be dry; do not add alcohol, water, solvent, or household cleaner.

Stop if the cloth catches, the cartridge shell flexes, or the contacts appear damaged. Cleaning cannot repair a bent connector, a cracked shell, or an internal electronic fault.
4. Reinsert and test
Once the connector has been inspected or dry-cleaned, insert the Game Pak fully in the proper orientation with the console still off. Do not rock it from side to side or force it past resistance. Turn the system on and observe whether the game reaches its normal title or startup screen.

If the game starts, avoid repeatedly removing and reinserting it while powered on. If it does not start, proceed to the comparison test instead of applying more aggressive cleaning.

How to tell whether the cartridge or the Game Boy is at fault
Use a controlled two-cartridge test
- Choose the cartridge that fails.
- Power the Game Boy off and remove that cartridge.
- Insert a second Game Pak that is known to work in the same console.
- Power on and note whether the second game starts.
- Power off before swapping cartridges again.
If the second game starts but the first does not, the result points toward the first Game Pak. If neither game starts, test another known-good cartridge if one is available. A failure across multiple games is the pattern that warrants attention to the console’s connector or reading path.
Keep the test conditions consistent
Use the same Game Boy, the same power arrangement, and the same insertion procedure for each cartridge. Changing several variables at once can hide the cause. Do not scrape contacts, bend the cartridge, or repeatedly cycle the power while moving the Game Pak.

Do not treat one successful boot as proof of a permanent repair
A game that starts once after reinsertion may still have an intermittent contact problem. If the same cartridge repeatedly fails under the same safe procedure, record that pattern and report it to a repair provider. Do not escalate to solvents or internal disassembly simply because a single boot succeeded.

Common mistakes that make a reading problem worse
Inserting or removing a cartridge while powered on
The first step in Nintendo’s precautions is to turn the Game Boy completely off before removing or inserting a Game Pak. Hot-swapping can create unnecessary electrical and mechanical stress. Make the power switch part of every cartridge change.
Forcing the Game Pak
A cartridge should enter in the correct orientation and seat fully without excessive force. Resistance is a reason to stop and inspect, not a reason to push harder. Forcing it can damage the shell, the cartridge slot, or the alignment of the connector.
Blowing into the cartridge
Although it is a familiar habit, Nintendo specifically says not to blow on the connector contacts. Breath introduces moisture and does not provide a controlled way to remove debris. Use the recommended dry method instead.
Using solvent because it is common advice elsewhere
Nintendo’s instruction is unusually explicit: no benzene, paint thinner, alcohol, or any other solvent. That prohibition applies even when a cartridge appears heavily soiled. A solvent can spread contamination, affect plastic, or leave the component wet. Do not substitute an internet cleaning recipe for the manufacturer’s precaution.

Opening the cartridge or console as a first response
Nintendo says not to disassemble the Game Pak or Game Boy components and directs unresolved reading errors to customer support or a repair centre. Opening the shell can add broken clips, lost screws, contamination, or accidental damage to the list of problems. External inspection is reversible; internal repair is not a beginner cleaning step.

If one cartridge still fails
Confirm once more that the Game Boy was off during insertion, the cartridge was oriented correctly, and the connector was handled only with the approved dry method. If another known-good Game Pak works in the same system, treat the failing cartridge as the primary suspect. Stop further home cleaning and ask a qualified repair service about cartridge diagnosis.
If multiple cartridges still fail
When several games fail after correct insertion and the basic connector check, the console’s reading path or cartridge connector may need service. Do not flood the slot with cleaner, insert improvised objects, or attempt to bend contacts back into place. Contact Nintendo customer support or a repair centre, following the service options available for your region and model.
If there is visible physical damage
A cracked shell, bent edge connector, loose parts, or signs of liquid exposure are reasons to stop using the cartridge until it has been assessed. Cleaning is intended for removable foreign material; it is not a repair for broken plastic or damaged electronics.

If the system is wet
Power it off and unplug it immediately. Keep it out of use until it is completely dry, as Nintendo’s general care instructions require. Do not pour another substance onto it to displace moisture, and do not disassemble it as a self-directed drying procedure. If it remains unreliable after drying, seek service.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Game Boy fully powered off before every cartridge change.
- Cartridge held by its shell, not by the connector contacts.
- Correct orientation confirmed.
- Game Pak seated fully without force.
- Connector inspected for foreign material.
- No fingers, breath, liquids, solvents, or household cleaners used on the contacts.
- Game Boy Cleaning Wand or soft dry cloth used only as described by Nintendo.
- Another known-good Game Pak tested under the same conditions.
- Console service considered when multiple games fail.
- Cartridge service considered when only one game fails.
- Internal disassembly avoided unless performed by an appropriately qualified repair provider.
Why the one-game versus many-games distinction matters
A Game Boy reads every cartridge through the same console-side slot and reading path. That makes a comparison with another known-good Game Pak more informative than repeatedly cleaning the same failed game. Nintendo UK’s support guidance uses this distinction directly: a problem limited to one game indicates the cartridge, while a problem affecting multiple games raises concern about the console.
This is a diagnostic pattern, not a guarantee that every intermittent fault can be identified at home. A cartridge can have a fault that appears only occasionally, and a console connector can make inconsistent contact. Record which cartridges work, which fail, and whether the behavior changes after a correct reinsertion. Give that information to the service provider instead of taking the system apart.
When professional service is the right next step
Use customer support or a repair centre when the problem persists after the safe checks, when multiple known-good games fail, when a cartridge has physical or liquid damage, or when the cartridge will not seat normally. Nintendo’s guidance specifically says not to attempt internal repair of Game Boy components. A service provider can decide whether the cartridge or console needs further diagnosis without asking you to use prohibited solvents or risky tools.
