The safest routine is simple: handle the figure by sturdy areas, remove dust with a very soft dry brush or clean low-pressure air, and use only a barely damp lint-free swab when dry cleaning cannot remove a mark. Keep solvents, alcohol, bleach, detergents, waxes, abrasive erasers and polishing compounds away from collectible plastics. Store the figure out of direct light in a stable, reasonably dry room, and use a case made from identified polyethylene, polypropylene or polyester rather than PVC.
A 7-inch figure may combine several plastics with paint, decals, rubber, fabric, electronics or metal parts. Because the exact formulation is rarely printed on the toy, conservative cleaning and storage prevent more damage than aggressive restoration.

Why gentle care matters on a 7-inch figure
“Plastic” is not one material. A single action figure can have a rigid body, softer PVC accessories, rubbery joints or hair, painted surfaces, printed details and adhesives. Those parts age differently. Heat, ultraviolet (UV) light, pressure, moisture and repeated handling can make plastics brittle, sticky, discolored or mechanically weak.
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) advises that plastics may be cleaned, when necessary, by careful brushing, vacuum cleaning or dry wiping. It also warns that degraded plastics are more susceptible to both mechanical and chemical damage. That means a figure that already feels tacky, shows a white bloom or has lifting paint should receive less intervention, not stronger cleaner.
No authoritative failure rate, service-life estimate or cleaning-success percentage has been established specifically for 7-inch collectible action figures. The practical advice below applies general preventive-conservation guidance to a figure of this size; the material and condition of your individual piece remain decisive.

Prepare a safe cleaning workspace
Cleaning mistakes often happen before the first brush stroke. Set up a clean, low-dust surface with enough room to lay out the figure, accessories and any stand without knocking them together.
- Wash and dry your hands. If the figure is valuable or has a fragile finish, clean nitrile gloves can reduce fingerprints, but gloves can also reduce grip; do not use them if they make you likely to drop the figure.
- Keep food, drinks, smoke, candles and household solvents away from the work area.
- Use a clean, soft work surface. Do not work over a sink, hard floor or cluttered desk where a dropped accessory can disappear or snap.
- Remove loose weapons, alternate hands, stands and other accessories before cleaning the body. Set each part in a labeled tray or clean container.
- Support the figure by its torso or other sturdy structural area. Do not lift it by a thin antenna, weapon, cape, wrist, ankle, ponytail or decorative protrusion.
- Have a very soft sable-hair artist brush, a clean lint-free cloth or swab, and clean low-pressure air available. Use only tools that contain no grit, polish or residue from previous work.
Photograph the figure before starting if its condition is important. A few overview photographs and close-ups of joints, paint, decals and accessories make it easier to identify a new mark or change later.
Use this cleaning sequence
1. Inspect before touching the surface
Look for loose paint, flaking decals, sticky or oily areas, a powdery or white deposit, mold-like spotting, cracks and stressed joints. Check whether the figure contains batteries, lights or other electronics. If you see active deterioration, skip directly to the condition-specific guidance below rather than trying to make the surface look new.
2. Remove loose accessories
Take off parts that can fall, snag the brush or trap dust. Clean each accessory separately while holding its thickest section. If a part is permanently attached or made from soft rubber, leave it in place and work around it.
3. Brush from the top down
Use a very soft sable-hair brush with light strokes. Start at the head and shoulders, then move down the torso, limbs and base. Let the bristles lift particles from sculpted details, seams and joint gaps; do not scrub. A second clean brush can be reserved for recesses so grit picked up from a base is not transferred to painted areas.
4. Use clean, low-pressure air for loose particles
Direct a gentle stream across the surface rather than forcing air into a joint. Short passes can move dust from deep sculpting after brushing. Stop if a decal, loose paint edge, hair piece or small accessory begins to move. High pressure can drive grit into a hinge or stress a fragile part.

A clean, lint-free cloth or swab can pick up a thin film that a brush cannot lift. Use almost no pressure and change to a fresh section as soon as it collects dust. Do not polish the surface; a glossy patch may be a finish change rather than cleanliness.

6. Add minimal moisture only when necessary
If a mark remains and the material appears sound, dampen a lint-free swab or cloth with a very small amount of plain water. It should feel barely damp, never wet enough to drip. Test an inconspicuous area first and allow it to dry before proceeding. Wipe a small section once, then dry it immediately with a clean part of the cloth.
Keep water away from joints, hinges, electronics, decals, fabric and openings. Never soak the figure, immerse an accessory or force liquid into a seam. If the test area becomes tacky, cloudy, discolored or shiny, stop and return to dry cleaning.
7. Let the figure dry naturally
Leave cleaned parts in a shaded, dust-free area until completely dry before reassembly. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator or direct sunlight to accelerate drying; heat can speed plastic degradation and can soften adhesives or finishes.

Products to avoid
CCI’s instruction is unambiguous: “Never use solvents, bleaches, detergents, wax or vinyl and rubber erasers.” For a collectible figure, that prohibition includes common household shortcuts.

“It works on household plastic” is not a reliable test. A collectible’s paint, decal adhesive, soft PVC or aged surface may react very differently from a modern storage bin.
When a white bloom or sticky film is material failure
PVC and rubber can release plasticizers or other components as they age. The result may be a white haze, powdery bloom, oily film or persistent stickiness. These are not ordinary fingerprints that should be dissolved away.

CCI advises against using organic solvents or surfactant solutions on such exudates because they can penetrate the surface and create later problems. Blot a fresh oily spot gently with an absorbent, lint-free material, or use a light dry wipe for a powdery deposit. Do not scrape, buff or repeatedly wet the area. Photograph the condition, isolate the figure from other objects and seek advice from a conservator experienced with plastics if the piece is valuable or the deterioration is progressing.

Keep a deteriorating figure from touching neighboring figures, foam, paper or unidentified soft plastic. Residues can transfer, and the contact surface may become permanently marked. A separate, identified inert enclosure is safer while you decide on professional treatment.
Protect paint, decals, joints and electronics during handling
Paint and printed details
Paint edges and tampo-printed graphics can be thinner or less firmly attached than the surrounding plastic. Brush across them lightly rather than pushing into an edge. Never test a cleaner directly on a visible face, logo or eye; use an underside or concealed area.
Articulated joints
Do not repeatedly bend a joint to expose dust. Move an articulation only as far as needed, and stop if it feels unusually tight, gritty or soft. A joint under constant pressure can deform, especially in heat. Display the figure in a neutral, supported pose rather than forcing a dramatic stance that loads ankles, wrists or hips.
Fabric, hair and rubber parts
Keep moisture away from fabric and porous or rubbery components unless a conservator has provided material-specific instructions. Use a soft brush around them and avoid pulling threads or bristles. Rubber that has become tacky should be treated as a deterioration symptom, not washed with soap or alcohol.

Lights and batteries
Remove batteries only according to the maker’s instructions and only if you can do so without opening or stressing the figure. Never introduce liquid near switches, battery contacts, seams or wiring. If corrosion or a leaking battery is present, stop cleaning and obtain electronics and conservation advice.

Control light, temperature and humidity
Light and UV
Keep the figure out of direct sunlight and strong UV sources. Light and heat accelerate fading and polymer degradation. A shaded display is the simplest protection. UV-filtering glazing can help where practical, but it does not make a sunny windowsill safe: heat buildup and bright visible light still matter.
Temperature and humidity
A stable, moderate room is preferable to rapid swings. National Archives home-storage guidance for media gives 55–70°F (about 13–21°C) and 30–55% relative humidity as an example range. That is not a figure-specific guarantee; for a mixed-plastic action figure, avoiding dampness and keeping conditions steady are the key principles.
Do not store valuable figures in attics, garages or damp basements. Those locations commonly expose objects to larger temperature changes, condensation, leaks or uncontrolled humidity. Keep the figure away from heaters, vents, radiators and exterior walls that become cold or damp.

Dust and organic debris can nourish mold spores. Keep shelves and case interiors clean, and correct a humidity problem rather than masking its symptoms. If you see fuzzy growth, musty odor or spreading spots, isolate the figure, avoid brushing spores through the room and seek qualified advice before attempting treatment.
Choose a display enclosure by material, not appearance
“Clear plastic” is not a sufficient specification. National Archives and Library of Congress guidance identifies polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyester, without added slip or coating agents, as stable enclosure plastics and advises avoiding PVC for long-term preservation. Confirm the material from the case maker or packaging documentation.

Never let the figure lean against glazing or rest under a lid. Give fragile accessories their own clearance, and ensure the base cannot slide when the case is moved.

Loose-figure storage: a practical setup
- Clean and dry first. Complete the dry-cleaning sequence and make sure no moisture remains in recesses.
- Choose an identified enclosure. Use a box, drawer or display case made from PE, PP or polyester rather than PVC. If the material is not identified, treat it as unknown instead of assuming that transparency means safety.
- Separate parts that can rub. Store weapons, alternate hands and stands so they cannot press against painted surfaces during handling or transport.
- Support without stress. Keep the figure upright or in a relaxed pose on a stable base. Do not wedge it tightly between packing materials or suspend it from a thin part.
- Place it in a stable room. Avoid direct light, heat sources, damp areas and locations subject to large temperature changes.
- Record the condition. Note the date, pose, accessories, visible marks and any tackiness or bloom. Photographs make later comparison more reliable.
- Inspect periodically. Look for dust accumulation, stickiness, powdery deposits, mold, fading, paint lifting and joint stress. A sealed case is not maintenance-free.
Boxed figures need protection too
Keep the original box out of direct light and away from dampness. Do not assume that an original clear window is suitable for decades of contact; identify whether it is PVC or another plastic if long-term preservation matters. If a box has a PVC window or unknown soft plastic touching the figure, minimize heat and humidity, avoid pressing the figure against the window, and consider a conservator’s advice for a high-value item.
Do not stack heavy boxes on top of a boxed figure. Compression can bow cardboard, stress blister packs and deform accessories. Leave enough clearance that the box can be removed without scraping the window or catching a corner on a neighboring package. Handle the package by its strongest panels, not by a loose flap or blister edge.
Open display versus sealed case and humidity buffering

National Archives guidance specifically cautions that the quantity of silica gel must be customized and monitored. A packet placed in a case without a hygrometer is not meaningful humidity control. If readings remain high or fluctuate sharply, improve the room environment rather than continually adding packets.
What to do when you notice a problem
Dust returns quickly
Check the shelf, case seals, nearby textiles and air vents. Remove the source of dust and repeat only the dry brush or low-pressure-air method. More frequent wet cleaning treats the symptom while increasing moisture and handling risk.
Surface feels sticky
Stop using water, alcohol or detergent. Isolate the figure from other objects, document the area and consult a plastics conservator if the tackiness persists or spreads. Sticky PVC or rubber may be exuding components from within the material.
White or powdery deposits appear
Do not dissolve or polish the deposit. Use a light dry wipe only if it is loose, avoid dispersing powder into joints and seams, and obtain professional advice for a valuable piece. The deposit may be plasticizer-related deterioration rather than removable dirt.
Paint lifts or decals curl
Stop brushing that area. Keep it shaded and free from pressure, and do not apply water or adhesive. A conservator can assess whether stabilization is possible without changing the original finish.
Color fades or turns yellow
Move the figure away from sunlight and strong UV immediately. Reduce heat and keep the environment stable. Cleaning cannot reverse light- or polymer-related color change; aggressive polishing is more likely to remove original finish.
Mold is visible
Isolate the object and address the humidity source. Avoid vigorous brushing, which can spread spores and drive debris into texture. Because mold treatment depends on the material and extent, obtain conservation advice before using any liquid or chemical.

Stop forcing the pose. Support the figure in a neutral position, reduce pressure on the joint and inspect for cracks or deformation. Do not add oil or household lubricant; it can migrate into plastic and paint.

Professional advice is warranted when the figure is rare or valuable, when a surface is sticky or powdery, when mold is present, when paint or decals are lifting, or when you cannot identify the material. Provide photographs, the figure’s approximate age and maker if known, the symptoms, and the products already used. Do not “clean it one more time” before consultation; every additional solvent, scrub or forced joint movement can reduce the options available for safe treatment.
