Cleaning or resurfacing an original PlayStation 2 disc cannot make it playable in a standard PS5. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” Cleaning is still useful for removing fingerprints and loose dirt when you plan to test the disc in hardware that supports PS2 media. It cannot add PS2 compatibility to the PS5, and a cracked, warped, or previously repaired disc should not be inserted into a PS5 at all.
Check compatibility before touching the disc
The first question is not how deep the scratch is; it is whether the console supports the format. A disc-drive PS5 accepts PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and supported DVD formats. Sony’s safety documentation separately says that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software cannot be played from a disc. That is a platform restriction, not a read error caused by dirt.

Consequently, an immaculate original PS2 game will still be rejected by a PS5. A professionally resurfaced PS2 game will still be rejected. Replacing the disc, polishing it, or removing every fingerprint cannot change the software format encoded on it.

The supported DVD category includes formats such as DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD listed in Sony’s safety information. Support for those formats should not be confused with support for a PS2 game disc, even though many PS2 games use DVD-sized media.

Sony Interactive Entertainment reported in 2020 that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5. That figure concerns PS4 software and must not be interpreted as PS2 disc support. Backward compatibility is decided by the console and software format, not by how clean or shiny a disc looks.
What cleaning can—and cannot—fix
What a safe cleaning removes
Finger oils, dust, and other surface contamination can interfere with the optical pickup in a console that actually supports the disc. Cleaning can improve the chance that compatible hardware reads a marginal disc, and it is a sensible first step before testing. Sony recommends a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.
What cleaning cannot repair
- It cannot make PS2 software compatible with a PS5.
- It cannot restore missing data from a deep gouge that reaches the reflective layer.
- It cannot correct a crack, delamination, warping, or a disc whose label has lifted.
- It cannot guarantee that a disc that already fails in compatible hardware will work after wiping.
- It cannot reverse damage caused by solvents, abrasive compounds, heat, or an earlier polishing attempt.
Scratches and dust can make optical media unplayable, but the manufacturer-backed method is limited to removing contaminants. Do not describe a clean disc as “repaired” unless a separate repair process has actually altered the disc, and do not assume that such an alteration is safe for a PS5.
Safe method for cleaning a PS2 disc
Use this procedure when you want to preserve the disc or test it in a PS2-compatible console. The same handling rules apply if you are cleaning a disc before storing it.
- Wash and dry your hands. Moisture, grit, and skin oil are easier to transfer when handling the disc with dirty or wet fingers.
- Hold only the edge or center hole. Keep fingers away from the data surface. Place the disc label-side down only on a clean, soft surface that will not scratch it.
- Use the right cloth. Choose a clean, lint-free optical-disc cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD media. A cloth that sheds fibers or contains trapped grit can create new marks.
- Wipe from the center toward the outside edge. Use straight strokes. Sony specifically advises wiping from the center towards the edge, rather than rubbing around the disc in a circular path.
- Use light pressure. Several gentle passes are safer than pressing hard. Stop if a particle appears to be dragging across the surface; shake it off the cloth or use a fresh section.
- Inspect under bright light. Look for cracks radiating from the center hole, a bent or wavy disc, deep gouges, cloudy separation between layers, and damage to the printed label.
- Separate cleaning from testing. If the disc is physically sound, test it in hardware that supports PS2 discs. Do not expect a PS5 to launch it after cleaning.
- Store it correctly afterward. Return the disc to a protective case, upright when practical, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
How many times should you wipe it?
One careful cleaning is normally enough to remove fingerprints and loose dust. If the surface still looks dirty, use a clean part of the cloth and make another light center-to-edge pass. Repeated hard rubbing does not remove a scratch; it only increases the chance of adding marks. Once the surface is visibly clean, move to a compatibility test rather than trying a stronger substance.
Damage triage: when not to insert the disc
Cracks and center-hole damage
A crack can spread when the disc spins at high speed. Even a small fracture near the center hole changes the disc’s balance and can break apart inside a drive. Sony warns against using cracked discs because the console may be damaged. Put a cracked disc aside for collection or professional assessment instead of testing it in a PS5 or another high-speed drive.
Warping and deformation
A disc that does not lie flat, has a visible wobble, or has been exposed to enough heat to deform should be treated as unsafe. Do not flatten it with books, heat, water, or pressure. Those methods can worsen the deformation and create a disc that is both unreadable and dangerous to spin.

Label and layer damage
Optical discs store the reflective information beneath a thin protective layer. Deep scratches on the readable side, peeling labels, bubbling, or visible separation between layers can expose or distort that information. A cloth cannot rebuild it. Keep such a disc out of every high-speed optical drive until a qualified preservation service has assessed it.
Previously repaired media
Sony’s PS5 safety guide says not to use discs that have been repaired. The warning is important even when a repair looks neat: an altered disc may be out of balance, thinner than intended, or structurally weakened. Because of that warning, do not insert a resurfaced or otherwise repaired PS2 disc into a PS5 to “see if it works.” If you pursue repair for preservation, reserve the result for compatible hardware only and follow the repair provider’s own safety guidance.
Why toothpaste and household remedies are poor choices
Toothpaste, baking soda, metal polish, solvents, window cleaner, abrasive pads, heat, and aggressive buffing are household remedies rather than Sony-approved procedures. They can leave residue, create uneven grooves, remove protective material, or turn a readable disc into a less reliable one. No official Sony instruction for PS5 disc care endorses these treatments.
Toothpaste is especially misleading because its fine abrasives may make a surface look smoother under a lamp while scattering light differently during reading. A temporary improvement in one drive is not proof that the disc is safe, balanced, or restored. If simple center-to-edge cleaning does not help in compatible hardware, stop experimenting with kitchen products. Do not combine several remedies, either: each additional abrasive or chemical makes it harder to identify what caused a failure.

Cleaning
Cleaning removes material sitting on top of the disc: dust, fingerprints, and loose contamination. It does not change the disc’s thickness or geometry and is the only routine treatment directly supported by Sony’s PS5 cleaning guidance. A suitable cloth is inexpensive compared with a replacement game or a drive repair, so it is the sensible first option for a physically sound disc.
Resurfacing
Resurfacing removes a controlled layer of plastic and polishes the surface to reduce the effect of some scratches. It is a physical alteration, not a stronger version of wiping. Success depends on how deep the damage is, whether the scratch reached critical information, and the quality of the machine and operator. A disc that reads after resurfacing in a PS2 is not thereby approved for a PS5.
When professional help makes sense
If your goal is to preserve a valuable game for use in PS2-compatible hardware, a professional optical-disc service may be considered after you document the disc’s condition. Ask what material is removed, whether the service accepts cracked or delaminated media, and what guarantee applies. Compare the service fee and shipping with the value of a replacement copy or an official re-release. Treat any guarantee as limited to the service’s stated equipment and conditions; it does not override Sony’s warning about repaired discs in a PS5.

Testing the wrong disc in the wrong console can make a healthy drive look faulty. Use this order to isolate the problem.

- Identify the disc format. Verify that it is an original PS2 game disc, not a PS4/PS5 release, a DVD movie, or an officially reissued version with different compatibility.
- Inspect before insertion. Reject any cracked, deformed, delaminated, or repaired disc for PS5 use.
- Clean once using the center-to-edge method. Do not stack multiple abrasive “fixes” after a failed attempt.
- Use compatible hardware for the game test. Insert the clean disc into a console or drive that officially supports PS2 discs. If it fails there, the disc may be damaged, or the compatible drive may need service.
- Test the PS5 with known-good supported media. Sony recommends trying another known-good game, Blu-ray, or DVD when diagnosing a disc-drive problem. A PS4 or PS5 game disc that works indicates that the PS5 drive can read supported media; it does not make the PS2 disc compatible.
- Escalate persistent PS5 failures. If multiple supported discs fail, follow Sony’s PS5 troubleshooting flow and contact PlayStation Repairs. Do not use an unsupported PS2 disc as the diagnostic test.
Keep a simple test record
Write down the console model, the disc title and region marking, whether the disc was cleaned, and which known-good discs were recognized. This prevents repeated insertions of an unsupported or unsafe disc and gives a repair technician useful information if several supported discs fail. If only one PS2 disc fails in a compatible PS2 system while other PS2 discs work, concentrate on that disc’s condition rather than the PS5.

The cheapest option is usually a proper optical-disc cloth, but its benefit is limited to contamination. A resurfacing fee can be worthwhile for a rare title if a compatible PS2 is available, yet it is a poor investment if the only intended player is a PS5. In that case, look for a PS5-compatible release or another officially supported format rather than paying to alter an incompatible disc.
Common failure messages and what they mean
“Unsupported disc” on a PS5
For an original PS2 game, this is the expected compatibility boundary, not evidence that you need a stronger cleaning method. Confirm the disc’s identity and the console edition, then stop trying to make that disc launch in the PS5.
The disc is not recognized in compatible hardware
Clean it once, inspect for deep damage, and test another known-good PS2 disc in the same compatible console if available. If other PS2 discs also fail, the drive may be the issue. If only this disc fails, its damage or deterioration is more likely. Do not infer from a PS5 error that the PS2 disc needs more polishing; the PS5 cannot provide a valid compatibility test.
A supported PS4, PS5, Blu-ray, or DVD also fails in the PS5
That pattern points toward a console-drive or system problem rather than the PS2 disc. Follow Sony’s troubleshooting instructions and use PlayStation Repairs if the failure persists. Test one known-good supported disc at a time, keeping the disc clean and free of cracks, so the result is meaningful.
Preserving discs after cleaning
- Keep each disc in its original case or a protective optical-media case; avoid loose stacks.
- Store discs vertically where possible so they are not compressed under heavy items.
- Keep them away from radiators, dashboards, direct sun, and damp rooms.
- Do not write on the readable side or apply adhesive labels that can affect balance.
- Handle by the rim or center hole every time, even after a disc has been cleaned.
- Make a note of which hardware successfully reads the disc; this prevents repeated testing in an unsupported PS5 drive.
- Keep the case and booklet with the disc so you can identify the exact edition before buying replacement media.
What a successful cleaning result actually looks like
A successful cleaning result is a visibly cleaner, physically sound disc that reads more reliably in compatible hardware. It is not a PS5 compatibility upgrade. If the PS5 continues to report an unsupported disc after cleaning, that result is consistent with Sony’s stated format limitation. If a supported PS5 disc fails along with several other supported discs, investigate the console instead of continuing to polish the PS2 media.

Can I play PS2 discs on PS5 if I repair them?
No. Sony states that PS2-format software cannot be played from a disc on PS5. Repairing or resurfacing may help a compatible PS2 read a damaged disc, but it does not change the format or add PS2 support.
Will toothpaste fix a PS2 disc?

Is professional resurfacing worth the cost?
It depends on the game’s value, the disc’s damage, the service guarantee, and whether you have compatible PS2 hardware. Compare the paid service and shipping with replacement media. Resurfacing still will not make the disc usable on PS5.

Use only a lint-free optical-disc cloth, wipe in straight strokes from the center hole to the edge, and test the disc only in hardware that supports PS2 software.
