The safest routine is simple: power down and unplug the headset, wash your hands, blow loose dust away with a manual rubber air blower, then wipe the lenses with a clean optical-grade microfiber cloth. Keep liquids, alcohol and chemically treated wipes away from the optics unless the exact manufacturer instructions for your model explicitly allow a slightly damp cloth. Clean the shell, face cushion and light shield according to their separate material instructions, let washable parts dry completely, and store the headset powered off in a cool, dry, ventilated place with its lenses shielded from sunlight, dust and accidental contact.
Lens-care rules are not identical across headsets. Sony’s PS VR2 support guidance requires a soft, dry lens cloth, while its manual describes a slightly moistened cloth followed by a dry cloth for stubborn dirt. HTC VIVE Focus Vision guidance forbids every kind of cleaning solution on the lenses. When instructions conflict, the current manual or support page for your exact model takes priority.

The safe cleaning sequence at a glance
Use this order every time you clean a headset. Changing the order can drag grit over an optical coating or move liquid into a sensitive component.
- Shut down and disconnect. Turn the headset completely off, unplug its cable and remove any charging connection.
- Wash and dry your hands. Finger oils transfer easily to lenses and leave more work for the cloth.
- Blow away loose particles. Use a handheld rubber air blower over each lens and the eye-tracking areas. Do not rub while visible grit is still present.
- Dry-wipe the optics. Use a clean, dust-free microfiber cloth made for optical lenses. Starting at the center, make gentle circular strokes toward the outer edge.
- Clean the rest by material. Hard exterior plastic, face cushions, light shields, controllers and cables may have different permitted methods.
- Dry every washable part fully. Reattach a cushion or light shield only after it is completely air-dry.
- Store with the optics protected. Keep the powered-down headset in a cool, dry, ventilated location away from direct sun, with a correctly fitted lens cover or case.
Prepare the headset before you touch the lenses
Power off, unplug and remove accessories
Powering down prevents accidental input while you are wiping and removes electrical power before any exterior cleaning. Disconnect the headset cable and charger. If a removable face interface, light shield or cable blocks access, take it off according to the model’s instructions rather than forcing it.

Wash your hands and set up a clean work area
Wash your hands, dry them completely and work on a clean, stable surface. Keep the microfiber cloth itself away from pockets, tables and other fabrics that can load it with grit. A cloth that was used on a dusty shell is not automatically safe for the lenses; use a separate optical cloth.
Inspect before wiping
Look across the lenses at an angle. If you can see sand, hair, dust or another particle, do not start with the cloth. Rubbing first can pull that particle across the lens surface. Check the eye-tracking windows as well, because they are also sensitive optical areas.
How to clean VR headset lenses and eye trackers
1. Remove dust with a manual air blower
Hold the headset so particles can fall away from the optics. Squeeze a handheld rubber air pump in short bursts over each lens and eye-tracking area. A manual blower is preferable to rubbing dust loose with a finger or cloth. Do not use your mouth: breath adds moisture and can leave droplets or saliva on the lens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Use the right cloth
Choose a clean, dry, dust-free microfiber cloth specifically made for optical lenses. The weave should be soft and free of grit, oils, paper fibers and embedded debris. Do not substitute paper towels, tissues, clothing, cotton swabs or a cloth treated with a general household cleaner. Those materials can shed fibers, leave residue or be too abrasive for optical coatings.
3. Wipe from the center outward
Place the cloth lightly on the center of the lens and move in small, gentle circles toward the outside edge. Use only the pressure needed to lift a smudge. Rotate to a clean section of cloth as soon as the working area picks up oil or dust. A slow center-to-edge motion keeps loosened contamination moving away from the central viewing area instead of redistributing it.
4. Keep liquids and chemicals off the optics
HTC’s VIVE Focus Vision guidance says, “Never use any kind of cleaning solution on the lenses.” Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS VR2 support guidance says, “Wipe only with a soft, dry cloth, made specifically for cleaning lenses,” and separately warns against alcohol, chemically treated wipes and unsuitable paper products. Never spray cleaner directly onto a headset; spray can run into seams, sensors or displays before you can control it.

5. Handle stubborn dirt according to the exact model
If a dry cloth does not remove a mark, stop and check the current instructions for your model rather than escalating to alcohol or glass cleaner. The PS VR2 manual describes a slightly moistened cloth followed by a dry cloth for stubborn dirt, while the PS VR2 support page specifies a soft, dry lens cloth. HTC VIVE Focus Vision prohibits cleaning solution on its lenses. These instructions cannot be merged into one universal rule: use the stricter instruction when you are uncertain, and follow the manual supplied for your headset revision.
Cleaning the headset body without contaminating the lenses
Separate hard surfaces from sensitive parts
The shell, buttons and other hard exterior surfaces are not cleaned the same way as lenses, eye trackers, foam or fabric. Keep any damp cloth, disinfectant and rinse water away from optical openings, vents, tracking windows, speakers and connectors. Do not immerse the headset or pour liquid over it.
Use approved disinfectant only where the manufacturer permits it
HTC permits a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with a specified disinfectant for certain hard surfaces. Its current guidance identifies a diluted alcohol solution containing 70%–75% ethanol for those permitted surfaces. This concentration guidance does not authorize alcohol on the lenses, eye trackers, foam or other sensitive components. Put the approved solution on the cloth as directed; never spray it onto the headset.
Wipe, then allow the surface to dry
Use the minimum moisture needed to clean the permitted hard area, keeping the cloth controlled around seams and openings. Let the surface dry before reconnecting cables or putting the headset away. If your model’s instructions do not identify a disinfectant or concentration, do not assume that a household wipe is compatible; use a dry cloth and consult that model’s care documentation.
Face cushions, removable light shields and other washable parts
Face-contact pieces and light shields have their own care instructions. Remove them only as the manufacturer describes. Clean or wash them using the specified method, then place them where air can circulate until they are completely dry. Reattaching a damp part can trap moisture against the headset and transfer it to the lenses or electronics.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not apply the hard-surface disinfectant used on a shell to foam or fabric unless the model’s instructions explicitly allow it. HTC’s guidance specifically separates hard surfaces from lenses, eye trackers, foam and sensitive components. Treat each material as a separate cleaning job, and keep the optical cloth reserved for the optics.

Model-specific rules and where they differ
The following comparison captures the published differences that matter most when choosing a cleaning method. “Not stated” means the cited guidance does not establish a value; it is not permission to improvise.
| Headset or guidance | Lens moisture rule | Hard-surface disinfectant | Cushion or light-shield care | Sunlight and ventilation warning | Cover or case consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony PS VR2 support | Soft, dry cloth made specifically for lenses; no alcohol, chemically treated wipes or unsuitable paper products. | Not stated on the cited lens-support page. | Use the component’s own care instructions. | Keep the headset away from direct sunlight; Sony warns that sunlight may damage the lenses. | Use a cover or case only if it fits the PS VR2 without touching the optics or controls. |
| Sony PS VR2 manual | For stubborn dirt, the manual describes a slightly moistened cloth followed by a dry cloth; thinner, benzine and alcohol remain prohibited. | Follow the manual for non-optical surfaces. | Follow the manual’s removable-part washing and drying directions. | Store away from direct sunlight in a dry, ventilated location. | Verify that a shield or case is made for PS VR2 before use. |
| HTC VIVE Focus Vision | Never use any cleaning solution on the lenses. | HTC specifies a cloth lightly dampened with a diluted 70%–75% ethanol solution for permitted hard surfaces only. | Do not put that disinfectant on foam or sensitive components; follow the separate part instructions and air-dry completely. | Do not expose the headset or controllers to direct sunlight. HTC also warns that UVC use requires covering the lenses because ultraviolet discoloration may not be covered by warranty. | Use a compatible lens cover or enclosed case and confirm that it fits the exact Focus Vision hardware. |
| Any model not covered above | Check the current manual or support page. If it does not clearly allow moisture, use a dry optical microfiber cloth only. | Use only a product and concentration expressly approved for that model’s hard surfaces. | Follow the named material’s instructions and wait for complete air-drying. | Keep the headset cool, dry, ventilated and out of direct sun unless the manufacturer states otherwise. | Check exact-model compatibility; a cover that presses on a lens can create damage instead of preventing it. |
How to store a VR headset safely
Choose the location first
Put the powered-down headset in a cool, dry, ventilated place. Avoid windowsills, cars, radiators, damp cupboards and sealed areas where heat or condensation can build up. Ventilation matters after cleaning as well as during ordinary storage: every part should be dry before the headset is enclosed.
Block direct sunlight from the lenses
Do not leave the headset where sunlight can enter the lenses. Sony warns that direct sunlight may damage PS VR2 lenses. HTC likewise warns against direct sunlight on its headset and controllers. The lens system can concentrate incoming light, so a short period near a bright window is not a safe substitute for proper storage.

Use a lens cover or case that actually fits
A model-specific lens cover or enclosed case keeps dust and accidental contact away from the optics. Check the fit for the exact headset, revision and face interface. The cover should not press on a lens, block ventilation openings or force the display housing out of alignment. If a case has no ventilation path, let the headset cool and dry before closing it.
Store controllers and cables without strain
Keep controllers out of direct sunlight as well, especially where the headset maker includes them in the same warning. Coil cables loosely rather than sharply bending them at the connector. Do not place heavy objects on the headset or allow a lens cover, cable or accessory to rest against the optics.
Understand the UVC limitation
HTC’s guidance says that if UVC is used, the lenses must be covered because ultraviolet discoloration may not be covered by warranty. A UVC device is therefore not a general license to expose an assembled headset to ultraviolet light. Follow the headset manufacturer’s exact procedure, including any required lens covering, or avoid the process.

A complete clean-and-store routine
Use this checklist when visible smudges, dust or residue require attention and you plan to put the headset away afterward.
- Shut the headset down and disconnect all cables.
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Remove a face cushion or light shield only if the model’s instructions call for it.
- Blow loose particles from both lenses and eye trackers with a manual rubber air blower.
- Wipe the lenses with a clean, dry optical microfiber cloth, moving from center to edge with gentle circular strokes.
- Clean permitted hard shell surfaces with the model-approved cloth or diluted disinfectant; keep moisture away from optics, foam, sensors and connectors.
- Wash removable parts by their own instructions and leave them exposed to air until completely dry.
- Inspect for remaining grit or moisture before reassembly.
- Fit a compatible lens cover or place the headset in a suitable case.
- Store it powered off in a cool, dry, ventilated location away from direct sunlight.
What to do when cleaning goes wrong
The lens still looks smeared
Stop adding pressure or cleaner. Blow the lens again, switch to a clean section of optical microfiber and repeat the center-to-edge motion. If the mark remains, consult the exact model’s instructions for stubborn dirt. Do not escalate to alcohol, glass cleaner or a chemically treated wipe simply because a dry pass did not work.
You wiped before removing grit
Do not try to polish the area aggressively. Remove remaining particles with a manual blower and inspect the lens under angled light. If you suspect a scratch or coating damage, stop cleaning and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel; consumer polishing compounds can permanently alter the optics.
A cushion or light shield is damp
Remove it again and let it air-dry completely in a ventilated place. Do not accelerate drying with a heat source, and do not close the headset in a case while the part is damp.
Cleaner reached a lens, eye tracker or opening
Power remains disconnected. Do not spread the liquid with more wiping or spray additional product. Blot only the accessible exterior with the approved dry material for that component, allow the headset to dry, and follow the model’s support guidance for liquid exposure.

Quick Recap
Key rules to remember
- Dust first; never drag visible grit across a lens.
- Reserve a clean optical microfiber cloth for the lenses and eye trackers.
- Use gentle center-to-edge circles, not scrubbing.
- Treat lenses as liquid-sensitive unless the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly permit a different method.
- Never spray cleaner onto the headset.
- Apply approved disinfectant only to the hard surfaces named by the manufacturer, and keep it off lenses, eye trackers, foam and other sensitive parts.
- Air-dry removable pieces completely before reattaching them.
- Protect the powered-down headset from direct sunlight, dust, heat, moisture and accidental contact.
- Check the fit of every lens cover or case against the exact headset model.
