Sony’s published guidance does not call for liquid cleaners, compressed air, or deep internal disassembly. The procedure below stays within the steps Sony describes and explains how to choose a gentle tool, where to stop, and what to do if the console still has airflow problems.

What you need before starting
Gather the equipment before moving the console. Preparation prevents you from leaving a powered or uncovered PS5 unattended while searching for a tool.

- A soft, dry microfiber or other non-abrasive cloth for the exterior plastic.
- A low-powered vacuum cleaner for the vents. A small handheld vacuum with a soft brush or narrow nozzle is easiest to control.
- A clear, stable work surface with enough room to place the covers without scratching them.
- Good lighting so you can see dust around the vent openings and beneath the covers.
Use the vacuum in dry mode only. Do not add water, cleaning solution, oil, polish, or a scented product to the cloth or nozzle.

Safety rules that prevent damage
Disconnect power at the console
Shut the PS5 down through the normal system menu and wait until the power indicator shows that it is fully off, not in Rest Mode. Then disconnect the AC power cable from the rear of the console before cleaning. Sony’s support instruction is explicit: “For safety reasons, always disconnect the PS5 consoles’ AC power cable from the rear of the system before cleaning.” Disconnect other cables as well if they will restrict access or pull on the console while you work.
Let the system cool
A PS5 can remain hot immediately after use. Sony’s safety guidance says to turn it off, unplug the AC cord and cables, and wait for it to cool before removing covers. Do not judge by the indicator light alone; allow the enclosure to become comfortable to touch and give the internal hardware additional time to lose heat. Cleaning the outside can be done after power is disconnected, but cover removal must wait until the console is cool.
Never run the console with a cover removed
The covers are part of the console’s intended operating configuration. If you remove one, keep the PS5 unplugged while the cover is off, and refit it fully before reconnecting power. Sony’s safety material warns not to use the console without its cover.
Keep liquids and chemicals away
Use only a soft, dry cloth on the exterior. Do not spray the console, spray the cloth with a cleaner, or use insecticides, volatile substances, paint thinner, benzene, alcohol, or chemically treated cloths. A damp-looking cloth can leave moisture at a seam or vent, so choose a genuinely dry one.

When comparing handheld vacuums, prioritize low, controllable suction over maximum power. A soft brush helps lift loose dust without forcing a rigid edge against the plastic. A narrow attachment is useful around vent slots, but it should remain just above the surface rather than being pushed into a slot. Choose a tool that can be operated with one hand while you stabilize the console with the other.
Step-by-step cleaning procedure
1. Shut down and disconnect everything that can interfere
- Save your game and close running applications.
- Use the PS5 power menu to select the full shutdown option, not Rest Mode.
- Wait until the console has completely powered down.
- Unplug the AC cable from the rear of the PS5. Disconnect HDMI, network, USB, storage, and other cables if they make the console difficult to move safely.
- Move the unplugged console to a clean, stable surface with room on every side.
Do not pull on a cable at an angle or begin vacuuming while any power cable remains connected.
2. Wait for the console to cool
Leave the PS5 undisturbed until the enclosure is cool. If it was running a demanding game, downloading for a long period, or sitting in a warm cabinet, allow more time rather than removing a cover while it is still hot. Cooling is a condition for the next step, not an optional convenience.

- Fold the dry cloth so you have a clean, soft surface.
- Wipe the outside of the covers, the exposed center section, the stand, and the power-button area with light strokes.
- Use a fresh part of the cloth as dust transfers to it.
- Keep the cloth away from open vent slots if it begins shedding lint; let the vacuum handle those areas.
Do not spray anything onto the console or cloth. If a mark does not come off with a dry wipe, leave it rather than escalating to a solvent that Sony advises against.

4. Vacuum the vents with low suction
- Set the vacuum to its lowest effective power.
- Attach a soft brush or smooth, narrow nozzle.
- Hold the attachment just above the vent openings and move it slowly around the perimeter and across visible dust.
- Use several light passes instead of pushing the nozzle against the grille.
- Stop if the nozzle catches, the plastic flexes, or you would need to force it into a slot.
Sony’s support instruction is to “use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that has accumulated in and around the air vents.” The phrase “in and around” means you can clean visible dust at the openings, but it does not authorize probing deep into the console. Keep the suction controlled and the operation dry.
5. Remove the covers only when you need access underneath
If dust is visible beneath a cover or the vent area cannot be reached from outside, remove the covers according to the cover design for your PS5. The console must still be cool and unplugged. Work over a clear surface, support the panel with both hands, and use the release and sliding motion intended by the cover; never bend, twist, or pry a panel with a tool. If a panel does not move with gentle, correctly directed pressure, stop and check the model’s official handling instructions instead of forcing it.
Place each removed cover face-up on a clean surface. Keep track of the left and right panels and any stand hardware so that every part returns to its original position.

6. Clean the dust-catcher areas beneath the covers
- Inspect the exposed channels and recessed areas for loose dust. These are the areas commonly called the PS5’s dust catchers.
- Use the low-powered handheld vacuum with a soft brush or smooth nozzle.
- Hover over each collection area and make slow passes until the loose dust is removed.
- Do not scrape the recesses, insert a cotton swab into a slot, or touch internal components unnecessarily.
- Check the surrounding cover edges and vent openings before replacing the panels.
A dust catcher is a place where accumulated loose dust can be collected for removal; it is not a removable filter that should be washed or treated with a chemical. If you see material that is stuck, oily, wet, or connected to a component, stop instead of trying to dislodge it with force.

7. Refit the covers and reconnect the console
- Check that no cloth fibers, vacuum-brush bristles, or loose debris remain on the mating edges.
- Reinstall each cover using its intended alignment and sliding motion. Press only where the panel is designed to seat; do not flex it.
- Confirm that the covers sit flush and do not rattle when touched lightly.
- Reattach the stand if you removed or repositioned it.
- Reconnect the AC cable and the other cables only after all covers are fully secured.
- Place the PS5 in an open location and power it on normally.
If a cover will not seat, unplug the console again and correct the alignment. Do not operate the PS5 with a panel partly attached.
Restore airflow after cleaning
Cleaning cannot compensate for a cramped installation. Sony’s ventilation guidance calls for at least 10 cm (4 inches) of space between the console and a wall. Leave the side and rear vents unobstructed, avoid long-fiber carpets and tight enclosed spaces, and do not cover the console with cloth while it is operating.
Check the complete airflow path, not just the front of the machine. A shelf edge, cable bundle, curtain, game case, or decorative cover can block an opening even when the console looks clean. Place cables so they do not press against a vent or pull the PS5 out of alignment. If the console sits on carpet with long fibers, move it to a firm, clear surface that does not shed material into the vents.

How often should you clean a PS5?
There is no universal Sony timetable in the cited guidance. Inspect the vents and the area around the console when you see a visible film of dust, after rearranging furniture, or whenever the installation has changed. Homes with pets, construction dust, smoking, or long-fiber flooring may need more frequent inspection than a clean, open room; that is an environmental difference, not a prescribed interval.

Use the least invasive method that solves the problem. A dry exterior wipe and light vent suction are enough when dust is only on the surface. Remove covers only when dust is clearly collected underneath and the console is cool and unplugged.
Troubleshooting common cleaning problems

- Do not insert a brush, swab, screwdriver, or vacuum nozzle into a deep opening.
- Do not force a cover, stand, or connector.
- Do not run the PS5 with a cover missing or partly attached.
- Do not place the cleaned console against a wall, in a cramped cabinet, on long-fiber carpet, or under a cloth.
When to stop and seek service
Routine dust removal is limited to surfaces and loose dust that you can reach without force. Stop if you encounter a damaged panel, a loose connector, liquid, a burnt smell, unusual grinding, a fan that will not start, or debris that appears bonded to an internal part. Repeatedly opening the console or attempting deeper disassembly can create a different problem from the dust you intended to remove. Refit the covers, leave the system unplugged if its condition is uncertain, and contact official PlayStation support or a qualified repair technician.
A simple decision guide
- Dust only on the shell: shut down, unplug, cool, and use the dry cloth.
- Dust around the vents: add low-powered suction with a soft attachment, keeping the nozzle outside the openings.
- Dust beneath a cover: after cooling and unplugging, remove the cover using its designed motion, vacuum the exposed dust-catcher areas, and refit the panel.
- Dust deep inside, liquid, damage, or persistent warnings: stop home cleaning and seek service.
