What clearing the download cache actually does
Steam’s Clear Download Cache command removes locally cached data used for downloads and related client configuration, then obtains fresh data from Steam’s servers. It is intended for situations such as downloads that stall, updates that repeatedly fail, or a game that will not start because Steam’s local download state is inconsistent.

The operation is global to the Steam client’s download system. It is not a per-game reinstall and it does not remove the files already installed in your Steam library. Steam Support describes the effect directly: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.”
Clearing the cache also is not the same as deleting Steam Cloud data. Cloud synchronization and account/game records are stored separately, so the cache reset should not be used as a reason to remove those folders.

What you need before starting
- A running Linux desktop session with the Steam desktop client installed.
- Enough time to let Steam close and reopen, and your Steam account credentials or another supported sign-in method available.
- A network connection. Steam reacquires cached information from its servers after the reset, so an offline reset may leave you unable to sign in or resume downloads until connectivity returns.
Pause or stop any active download before you begin. Steam normally handles the shutdown itself, but stopping the queue makes it clear which operation is being performed and avoids mistaking a normal restart for a failed download.
Clear Steam’s Linux download cache: exact steps
- Launch Steam. Start the regular desktop client on your Linux distribution and wait for the main library window to finish loading.
- Open the client menu. In the top menu bar, select Steam, then choose Settings. On some client builds the settings window may be labeled Preferences; use the Steam client’s settings entry rather than a game’s individual properties window.
- Open Downloads. In the settings sidebar, select Downloads. This page contains download-region, bandwidth, and cache controls.
- Choose Clear Download Cache. Scroll to the bottom of the Downloads page and click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the prompt. Steam displays a confirmation warning that the client will restart or return to the sign-in screen. Approve the reset.
- Sign in again. When Steam restarts, enter your account credentials and complete any verification requested by the client. This second sign-in is expected behavior, not evidence that your games were removed.
The precise placement or capitalization of a menu item can change as Steam updates its Linux client. If the wording is slightly different, look for the same built-in cache-reset control on the Downloads settings page. Do not substitute an unrelated “clear browser data” command or a game-specific cache command.
What happens to your games and settings
Installed game files stay in the library
The reset does not uninstall games, remove Proton prefixes, or wipe the content stored in your Steam library folders. After signing in, Steam should rediscover the existing library and show the installed titles as before. A download may be scheduled again if an update was interrupted, but that is different from reinstalling the game from scratch.
You must authenticate again
Steam deliberately requires another login after the cache is flushed. Have your password, mobile authenticator, or other account-verification method ready. If you use a shared computer, do not save credentials merely to avoid this one-time sign-in unless that matches your normal security practice.

Download state is rebuilt
Steam reacquires the cached configuration and download metadata from its servers. The first launch after the reset can therefore take longer than usual, and a download queue may be re-evaluated. This does not provide a guaranteed increase in download speed; it simply removes stale local state that can interfere with downloads or launches.
Do not delete the wrong Linux Steam folder
Manual deletion is more error-prone than using the client button. Steam’s Linux documentation mentions appcache and depotcache inside the Steam installation directory as possible manual troubleshooting targets after Steam has been exited. Those folders should only be touched when a specific Steam troubleshooting instruction calls for it, and only after confirming the installation path and making sure no Steam process is running.
Leave userdata alone for this task
Steam Cloud documentation identifies ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata as a Linux location for account- and game-related userdata. That directory is not the download cache. Deleting it can remove local account or game data and can create new sign-in, configuration, or synchronization problems. If your goal is simply to clear a stuck download cache, do not remove, rename, or “clean” userdata.

- It targets the data Steam intends to refresh for download problems.
- It avoids guessing whether your distribution uses a traditional Steam directory, a different library location, or a package-managed installation.
- It provides the expected restart and sign-in flow instead of leaving Steam with partially deleted files.
- It preserves installed games and avoids accidentally touching Cloud or account data.
Pick the follow-up that matches the symptom
Clearing the global download cache is useful for a client-wide download or configuration problem. It is not the best response to every Steam failure. Use the narrowest repair that matches what you observe.

If clearing the cache does not fix the problem
Verify one game’s local files
Use this when the issue is limited to a particular installed title—for example, the game closes immediately, reports a missing file, or fails after an interrupted update.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files (the label may vary slightly by client version).
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files and wait for Steam to complete the check.
Steam compares the local installation with the files it expects and downloads replacements when necessary. Verification can take time and may reacquire substantial data, but it is targeted at that game rather than every title in your library.
Repair the Steam library folder
Choose the library repair control when Steam cannot write to a library, reports that a disk is read-only, or repeatedly says that a folder is missing or unavailable. The repair addresses the library path and its permissions; clearing the download cache alone cannot correct a mount, ownership, or write-access problem.

Change the download region
If the client works normally but downloads are slow or time out in one region, return to Steam > Settings > Downloads and select a different Download Region. Pick a nearby region first, then restart the download. Region changes affect which content server handles the transfer; they do not remove installed games or repair corrupted local files.

Check whether the failure is account-wide or game-specific
- If multiple games and updates fail in the same session, a cache reset or download-region change is more relevant.
- If only one game fails while other downloads work, verify that game’s files first.
- If Steam cannot write to any library, investigate the library folder and its mounted filesystem before repeating cache resets.
- If Steam cannot connect at all, resolve the network or service problem; a local cache reset cannot make an unavailable server reachable.
Common questions about the Linux cache reset
Will clearing the download cache delete my installed games?
No. Steam’s supported reset flushes cached download and configuration data. Installed game content remains in the library, although Steam may recheck an interrupted update and may ask you to sign in again.
Why does Steam make me log in again?
The reset removes local cached client state, so Steam starts a fresh session and requires authentication. This is the normal completion step documented by Steam Support.
Should I delete ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata instead?
No. That path contains Linux account- and game-related userdata, including data used by Steam Cloud. It is separate from the download cache and should not be deleted for a download problem.

Use the in-client command while Steam is open; it performs the shutdown and restart sequence safely. Do not manually remove cache directories while Steam or a Steam helper process is still running.

Will this make downloads faster?
There is no universal speed or disk-space gain. Cache size, reclaimed space, and download performance depend on the installation and workload. The reset can resolve stale local state, but it cannot improve a congested server, a slow connection, or a disk that is out of space.
What if the button is not exactly where these steps say?
Steam’s menu wording changes between client releases. Open the Steam client’s settings and locate the Downloads page; the supported reset remains the Clear Download Cache control on that page, even if surrounding labels move.
A safe decision sequence
- Identify whether the failure affects the whole client or only one game.
- For a client-wide download problem, use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
- Sign in again after Steam restarts.
- If one game still fails, run Verify Integrity of Game Files for that title.
- If Steam reports a library or write problem, repair the library folder.
- If transfers are slow only in one region, change the download region.
- Do not delete
userdata, and do not manually remove cache directories unless a specific troubleshooting procedure requires it and Steam is fully exited.
This sequence keeps each repair proportional to the symptom: global cache problems receive a global reset, damaged game content receives file verification, library errors receive library repair, and regional performance issues receive a region change.
