Clear the PS5’s system software cache in Safe Mode: shut down the console, hold its power button until the second beep, connect a controller by USB, then choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. Sony recommends this option for system-feature issues or performance drops.

Clear the PS5 cache in Safe Mode

  1. Turn the PS5 off completely. Hold the console’s power button for three seconds. Wait until the power indicator stops blinking and turns off.
  2. Start Safe Mode. With the console off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony says the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first.
  3. Connect the controller. Plug it into the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
  4. Choose the cache option. In Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache, then confirm the prompt.
  5. Let the console finish. Allow the operation to complete and the PS5 to restart if prompted.

Sony’s Safe Mode guide says to use Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops. The option is in Safe Mode, not the regular Settings menu.

Cache clearing and database rebuilding are different

Both options appear under Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, but they do different things. Clearing the system software cache is Sony’s suggested option for system-feature problems or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content; Sony says it may help with system-feature issues or when a deleted game’s icon remains on the Home screen.

Choose the operation that matches the problem. Rebuilding the database is not another name for clearing the cache.

Choose carefully to avoid resetting the PS5

Safe Mode also offers Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Sony says those reset options delete user data. For a cache clear, select the specifically named Clear System Software Cache option and do not select either reset option.

Sony’s general Safe Mode warning says some options can result in data loss; it does not say that clearing the system software cache itself deletes saved data. See Sony’s Safe Mode options for the distinctions between them.

If the PS5 keeps starting in Safe Mode

Sony’s troubleshooting steps are to turn off the console, disconnect its power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and start the PS5. If it still starts in Safe Mode, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. These steps are from Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting guide.

When other troubleshooting steps may apply

Cache clearing is not a universal fix for every game or system error. Sony recommends rebuilding the database for some specific game-start or system/application-data errors. Its PS5 error-code guidance also notes that resetting the console erases data saved on console storage and advises backing up if possible. Follow the instructions for the particular error rather than treating a reset as a routine follow-up to clearing cache.
