Turn off Roblox chat during an Xbox game
- Press the Menu button on your Xbox controller.
- Open the in-experience controls.
- Select Chat.
- Set the control to Off.
This disables Roblox’s standard in-experience chat for the current experience. The Chat control may not appear in experiences that do not support Roblox’s standard chat system. Developer-created communication features may continue to work because they are separate from Roblox’s built-in controls. See Roblox’s Experience Controls documentation and its Xbox help page.

Disable Experience chat for the account
If you want to prevent the account from using standard Roblox text chat across supported devices, change the account setting outside Xbox:
Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat

Turn Experience chat off. Roblox may display Privacy & content maturity instead of Privacy & content restrictions, depending on the account, region, or interface rollout. The communication setting is still called Experience chat. Roblox documents this option on its Experience Chat support page.
Disable chat on a child’s account
A linked parent account uses a separate control:
Settings → Parental Controls → select the child’s account → Settings you manage → Communication → Game chat
Turn Game chat off. This controls text chat with users in similar age groups in the same game. The parent account must be linked to the child’s Roblox account; without that link, the parent cannot manage the child’s Roblox communication settings. Direct chat is a separate setting
Ordinary game chat and direct chat are not necessarily the same feature. Roblox identifies Game direct chat separately; it uses the /w command inside a game server:
/w username messageIf the goal is to restrict every Roblox communication feature, review both Game chat and Game direct chat in the parent controls where those options are available. Roblox also describes direct chat in its Experience Chat documentation.
Turn off Roblox voice chat separately
Text chat and Voice Chat use separate controls. In an experience that supports voice:

In-experience settings → Voice Chat → Disconnected

Muting the microphone only stops microphone transmission; it does not disable text chat or necessarily disconnect Voice Chat.
Roblox Voice Chat on Xbox is available only to eligible users in supported experiences. Users must be at least 13 and complete an age check through ID verification or Facial Age Estimation before enabling it. Details are in Roblox’s Voice Chat instructions and Xbox Voice Chat documentation.

What Roblox’s Chat switch does not disable
- Xbox Live Party Chat: Roblox’s in-experience Chat switch does not disable an Xbox system party.
- Developer-made chat: An experience can use its own communication system outside Roblox’s standard chat controls.
- Voice Chat: Text Chat and Voice Chat have separate settings.
Xbox privacy settings and Party Chat controls are therefore not substitutes for Roblox’s Chat, Experience chat, or Game chat settings.

A missing Chat control does not always mean chat is silently enabled. Roblox began a global age-check requirement for chat on January 7, 2026. Users who have not completed an age check may not receive access to chat controls where chat is available. Experience support, account age, parental consent, and regional restrictions can also affect availability.
Current requirements include:
- Users aged 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat.
- Users under 16 need parental consent to enable Direct chat.
- Voice Chat requires an age check and is limited to eligible users aged 13 or older.
Roblox’s age-based account rollout also distinguishes between age-checked Roblox Kids accounts for ages 5–8, Roblox Select accounts for ages 9–15, and standard accounts for ages 16 and older. Chat is off by default for Roblox Kids accounts, while access for Roblox Select accounts increases by age and remains parent-controllable. Standard accounts have chat on by default after the required checks, subject to applicable restrictions. See Roblox’s age-check announcement, chat requirements, and age-based account documentation.

Disable chat with Roblox friends and Party Chat
Friend communication uses another setting:
Settings → Privacy & content maturity → Communication → Chat and Party with friends
Choose No one if that option is available. Roblox may also offer All friends and Trusted friends, depending on the account’s age and eligibility. Roblox states that selecting No one disables Party Chat. This setting is separate from in-experience Game chat; use the appropriate control for the type of communication you want to restrict.
