You can defeat Yurgir, persuade him to kill himself, or help him find the hidden Dark Justiciar, Lyrthindor. The third route requires investigating the Gauntlet’s rats.
Start Raphael’s quest and enter the Gauntlet of Shar

Find Raphael near the entrance to the Grand Mausoleum, northeast of the House of Healing, and speak with him. He asks you to deal with his old enemy, Yurgir. If Astarion is in the party, the conversation also relates Raphael’s request to Astarion’s scars.

Enter the mausoleum and press the three painting buttons in this order: Moonrise Towers, Grief, General.

Use the traversal gem to reach the Gauntlet of Shar.

Travel to the eastern end of the Gauntlet to find Yurgir. Talk to him before choosing violence if you want to hear about his contract or pursue the contract-breaking route. An immediate attack brings Yurgir’s Merregons and the displacer beast Nessa into the fight.
Choose how to resolve Yurgir’s contract
There are three main resolutions. Your choice determines whether the encounter is primarily a battle, a dialogue challenge, or an investigation.

| Help break the contract | Investigate the Gauntlet and resolve the encounter with Lyrthindor, the hidden Dark Justiciar. | This route follows the contract’s hidden-target clue and can affect Yurgir’s later role. |
Route 1: Fight Yurgir
Attacking Yurgir starts a fight against him, his Merregon followers, and Nessa. Winning the encounter is the direct combat resolution. The quest reference lists Boots of Brilliance, Hellfire Hand Crossbow, Infernal Metal, and an Umbral Gem among possible rewards.
Killing Yurgir advances Astarion’s The Pale Elf quest. If you later try to persuade Yurgir to join Gather Your Allies after killing him, the required Persuasion check is DC 30.
Route 2: Persuade Yurgir to kill himself
Start by talking to Yurgir rather than attacking. A direct Persuasion option is listed at DC 30 for characters without the listed Bard or Barbarian alternatives. Other dialogue chains can first turn the conversation toward Yurgir’s followers and Nessa, with different checks and class-specific options.

There is no single guaranteed dialogue sequence for every character: which options appear and how difficult the checks are depends on the conversation choices and available character options. Read the check shown in-game before committing to it.

Understand the contract’s clue
Yurgir’s contract orders him to kill the last Dark Justiciar. Its verse reads:
Spill all the blood sworn to the night. Silence all prayers; smother each rite
Wander Shar’s halls; hungry to slay; Leave no Justiciar alive to obey.

The target is not an obvious lone enemy: Lyrthindor has concealed himself among the Gauntlet’s rats. Agree to help Yurgir investigate, then follow the clues to discover the ritual site and learn that the rats are one person.
Resolve the rat encounter and return
Locate and resolve the encounter with the rats, then return to Yurgir to conclude this route. The discovery that the rats are Lyrthindor is central to breaking the contract; simply finding the verse is not the resolution.
