An Unheard Farewell begins in Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes, at the Adjutant Sous-Officier’s wrecked carriage near the Guidepost and Demolished Path route. The missing scouts are not on the obvious elevator destination: you must unlock the lift by destroying the glowing Nephtoglobin growths, jump from the moving lift onto a ledge halfway up the shaft, and burn the web-like or gold-vine barrier with fire transmutation. Inside the hidden cave, defeat the scout commander, take the scouts’ letter, and report back. The quest’s truth-or-lie decision does not remove the core Sleight of Hand Amber reward, but it changes the additional follow-up outcome.
Quest requirements and route at a glance
You can start this side quest during Chapter 2, while exploring the Valley of Ashes. The trigger is easy to pass because the carriage is beside the route rather than on the main combat path. Begin looking after the first Grenadier and before you descend the large broken bridge.

The central navigation trick is the lift jump. If you ride all the way to the upper destination, you can pass the cave without ever seeing the missing scouts.
Where to start An Unheard Farewell
Locate the Adjutant’s carriage
- Enter the Valley of Ashes in Chapter 2.
- Continue until you have passed the first Grenadier.
- Find the route near the Guidepost and the Demolished Path, before the descent over the large broken bridge.
- Approach the wrecked carriage and speak through its window to the Adjutant Sous-Officier.
- Agree to help locate his missing scouts.
The conversation at the carriage starts the quest. If you reach the broken-bridge descent before checking the carriage, backtrack to the nearby Guidepost area rather than searching the later elevator section for the quest giver.

Confirm that the quest is active
The Adjutant’s request is to find the scouts and bring back information about what happened to them. Once you accept, continue along the Valley of Ashes route toward The Climb. You do not need to search the wider valley for a separate marker; the investigation follows the elevator path.
Reach The Climb and unlock the elevator
Follow the broken-bridge route
Leave the carriage and proceed down the broken bridge. Cross the platforms along the route until you reach the next lantern and the elevator area. This traversal is part of the path to the scouts’ cave, so avoid turning back toward the carriage until you have completed the lift section.
Destroy the Nephtoglobin blockers
The elevator is held back by glowing Nephtoglobin growths. They are also called glowing orbs in some walkthroughs; the terminology differs, but the objects serve the same purpose. Shoot or otherwise destroy every visible growth blocking the lift. The lift will not provide the route to the cave until these obstructions have been cleared.

The elevator must be able to travel through its full vertical route before the hidden mid-shaft approach becomes usable. If the lift still stops short, look for another glowing growth in the surrounding route instead of trying to jump early.
Check the lift before committing to the jump
Once the exterior section is complete, ride the lift and observe the shaft as it moves. The scouts’ cave is on a ledge partway up, not at the lift’s normal upper stop. Position yourself to watch the opposite side of the shaft, where the ledge is easy to miss during a fast ascent.

How to reach the hidden scouts’ cave
Jump from the moving lift
- Step onto the now-unlocked elevator.
- As it travels through the shaft, look for the narrow ledge halfway up, on the side opposite the route you used earlier.
- When the platform is level with the ledge, jump from the moving lift onto it.
- Check that you have landed on the ledge before moving toward the barrier.
Do not simply remain on the lift until it reaches the top. The main upward route bypasses the scouts’ detour, which is why players often believe the cave is missing. The jump is the intended transition from the elevator route to the hidden ledge.
Recover after a missed jump
If you pass the ledge, use the lift’s next available cycle and watch the shaft again rather than abandoning the quest. The target is a mid-shaft landing, so wait for the ledge to come level with the platform and make the jump when the distance is shortest. A missed landing does not change the quest objective; it only leaves you on the main lift route.

On the ledge, look for a barrier made from web-like material or what some guides call gold vines. This is the entrance to the hidden cave. It is not a normal door and will not open through a switch or melee attack.
Use fire transmutation to open the entrance
Equip the required transmutation
Fire transmutation is required to burn through the barrier. If the web or vines do not react, confirm that fire transmutation is the active option before attempting the interaction again. The cave entrance only becomes passable after the material has been burned away.
- Stand directly in front of the web-like or gold-vine obstruction.
- Activate fire transmutation.
- Keep the effect on the barrier until the obstruction burns away.
- Enter the opening and follow the cave passage to the encounter.
The exact visual label can vary between descriptions, but the solution is the same: fire, not a different elemental effect, clears this entrance.

If the barrier will not burn
- Make sure you are at the mid-shaft ledge rather than the upper elevator route; the cave entrance is hidden on the detour.
- Verify that fire transmutation is selected and that you are targeting the material covering the opening.
- If the lift has not completed its exterior traversal, return to that section and finish unlocking its full route.
Defeat the scout commander and recover the letter
Prepare for the cave fight
The cave contains an elite enemy described as the scout commander or an elite soldier, depending on the guide. Treat the encounter as a higher-threat fight than the ordinary soldiers on the approach. The recommended technique is to use parries to damage the enemy’s posture, then attack during the opening created when that posture gives way.

Parrying is not mandatory for a particular build, and the precise combat approach depends on your weapon, timing and upgrades. The important progression condition is that the elite enemy must be defeated before the evidence can be collected.
Take the scouts’ evidence
After the enemy is down, search the cave for the scouts’ letter or orders and collect it. This item is the proof the Adjutant needs and advances the quest objective. Some walkthroughs also report a chest in the cave containing Pure Blade Material. Treat that chest as an additional pickup rather than the quest-critical evidence: the letter is the item that completes the investigation.
Check the cave before leaving
Because the entrance is reached by a one-time-looking jump, search the chamber after the fight instead of immediately retracing your steps. Collect the letter first, then open the reported chest if it is present in your version and loot the Pure Blade Material.
Return to the Adjutant and resolve the truth-or-lie choice
Backtrack to the carriage
Leave the cave and retrace the elevator route to the Valley of Ashes. Return to the wrecked carriage near the Demolished Path and speak to the Adjutant Sous-Officier again. Present the scouts’ letter or orders when the dialogue asks for your report.

What happens if you tell the truth
The truth option completes the quest and grants the shared Sleight of Hand Amber. Current walkthrough coverage also associates this choice with additional catalysts, but the exact bonus details are not reported consistently enough to treat a particular quantity or item list as universal. Choose this branch if you want the truth-related dialogue outcome or if role-playing your character’s honesty matters more than the alternate follow-up.
What happens if you lie
The lie option also completes the quest and preserves the Sleight of Hand Amber. Guides associate lying with a Remnant’s Return follow-up outcome, although the precise contents and presentation of that outcome can vary by account. Choose it when you prefer the lie-related result or want your dialogue decision to match a deceptive character.

There is no need to restart the quest to obtain the amber: both dialogue branches preserve the core reward. The choice is about the follow-up result and your preferred role-playing outcome.

Sleight of Hand Amber
Sleight of Hand Amber is the consistently reported main reward for An Unheard Farewell. Walkthroughs describe its effect as improving firearm reload time and weapon switching. Because both final dialogue options grant it, your truth-or-lie decision does not change access to this amber.

A cave chest containing Pure Blade Material is identified in several walkthroughs. Its presence is an optional area reward rather than the object needed to report the scouts. If you leave before opening the chest, the quest can still be completed once the letter has been collected.

Aggressive Reconnaissance
PowerPyx lists Aggressive Reconnaissance as the achievement associated with this quest. Achievement wording and unlock behavior can be affected by later patches, so use the in-game achievement notification as the final confirmation on your version.
Troubleshooting the most common roadblocks
“I cannot find the quest giver.”
You are probably searching too far into the Valley of Ashes. The Adjutant is at the wrecked carriage after the first Grenadier and before the large broken-bridge descent, near the Guidepost/Demolished Path route. Speak through the carriage window, not to a character elsewhere in the elevator area.
“The elevator will not move.”
Return to the lift surroundings and destroy every glowing Nephtoglobin growth or orb blocking it. Then complete the exterior traversal section around the shaft. The lift must be fully unlocked before it can carry you to the mid-shaft ledge.
“I reached the top but found no cave.”
The cave is a hidden detour halfway up the shaft. Ride the lift again and watch the opposite side for the narrow ledge. Jump off when the platform is level with it; the upper stop is not the destination for this objective.
“I am at the ledge, but the entrance is sealed.”
Find the web-like or gold-vine barrier and use fire transmutation. It is not opened by a lever, a normal attack or a different transmutation effect.
“I defeated the enemy but the quest did not advance.”
Search the cave for the scouts’ letter or orders. Defeating the scout commander or elite soldier is only part of the objective; the evidence must be collected before you return to the carriage.
“Which dialogue choice gives the better reward?”
Both choices grant Sleight of Hand Amber and complete the quest. Guides connect truth with additional catalysts and lying with a Remnant’s Return outcome, but they do not give a consistent, universal item breakdown. Select the branch whose dialogue or reported follow-up you prefer rather than expecting a different amber reward.
