To complete the Fire Temple, enter as Adult Link with the Hookshot and Goron Tunic, rescue the imprisoned Gorons to obtain the small keys, collect the Dungeon Map and Compass, defeat the two Flare Dancers, claim the Megaton Hammer, find the Boss Key, and use the hammer to defeat Volvagia. Take the Heart Container and Fire Medallion after the battle to finish the dungeon.
The route below follows the original Ocarina of Time layout. Master Quest changes the rooms and puzzle routing, so it requires a separate guide.

What you need before entering
The Fire Temple is the fifth dungeon and sits inside Death Mountain Crater. Enter it as Adult Link after completing the following preparation:

- Hookshot: You need it for the adult portions of the game and for navigation in the temple.
- Goron Tunic: Speak with Darunia’s son in Goron City to receive it. Equip the tunic before spending extended time in the crater’s heat.
- Adult Link: The dungeon is designed for his equipment and abilities.
- Death Mountain Crater access: Use the crater route to reach the temple entrance.
Carry a full supply of health and enough ammunition for your bow if you have it. The bow is useful during Volvagia’s flying phase, although the Megaton Hammer is the essential weapon for the fight.

How keys, the map and the compass work
The temple’s progression is controlled by two kinds of keys. Small keys open locked dungeon doors and are consumed when used. A key found in this dungeon applies to this dungeon; it cannot open a locked door elsewhere in Hyrule. Because several rooms branch away from the main route, note every key you collect and every locked door you pass.
The Dungeon Map records the rooms you have visited and clarifies how the floors connect. The Compass adds the locations of treasure chests and marks the boss location with a skull. If you are unsure whether a branch still contains an item, check the compass rather than repeatedly crossing the same rooms.
The Boss Key is different from a small key. It is reserved for the boss door and is not consumed on ordinary locked doors. Nintendo’s manual describes it as the key needed to open the door to the boss’s room.

1. Enter, meet Darunia and open the first route
Follow the opening passage from the entrance until you reach Darunia and the first imprisoned Gorons. The opening rooms establish the dungeon’s central task: freeing the Gorons captured inside. Look for the cells and interact with each accessible prisoner. A rescued Goron supplies information and, in the relevant cells, a small key.
Before leaving an area, sweep the room for a cell, chest, switch or door that you can now use. The dungeon often makes a newly rescued Goron the practical sign that you have completed that branch. Do not assume that reaching the next large chamber means every nearby cell has been handled.
2. Rescue the accessible Gorons and spend keys deliberately
Use the first small keys on the locked doors that block the next sections. The correct door is normally the one that continues the climbing route or reaches another cell; a door that leads to an optional chest can wait if opening it would leave you unable to advance.
As you move through the lower rooms, keep a simple record: which cells are empty, which locked doors remain, and which keys are in your inventory. This prevents the most common Fire Temple mistake—using a key on a side branch and later believing the dungeon failed to provide enough keys for the main path.

When a room contains more than one exit, clear the prisoner or chest that is immediately reachable before committing to a new floor. Returning to a room is sometimes necessary, but the temple becomes much easier to read when every available rescue is completed as soon as its door can be opened.
3. Collect the Dungeon Map and Compass
Make obtaining the map and compass an early priority. The map shows the rooms you have visited, while the compass reveals treasure chests and the boss marker. Together they turn the Fire Temple’s vertical layout into a navigable plan.
After picking up the map, compare the rooms you have actually entered with the unexplored shapes on the map. After picking up the compass, use the chest markers to decide whether a seemingly empty branch still deserves a visit. The compass’s skull mark also confirms the general location of the boss room, even though the Boss Key is still required to enter it.
4. Work through the block, torch, switch and flame-wall rooms
The middle route combines movable blocks, torches, switches and walls of flame. Treat these rooms as connected mechanisms rather than isolated puzzles:

Identify the locked exits, movable blocks, unlit torches and switches before pushing anything. A block moved into the wrong position can hide the route you need to use.
- Use blocks to reach or expose the intended path. Push them only after checking where the surrounding ledges and doors lead. If a block seems to create a dead end, look for a torch or switch that changes the room rather than forcing the block farther.
- Light or activate the required targets. Torches and switches may open a timed passage or remove a flame wall. Once the barrier changes, move through promptly and note the door that has become available.
- Cross flame-wall sections without losing your orientation. If the room resets, return to the switch or torch that controls it and repeat the sequence. The map helps distinguish a reset from a genuinely new branch.
These rooms reward observation more than speed. Clear the enemies that interfere with pushing or aiming, then look for the relationship between the switch, the flame barrier and the next locked door.
5. Defeat both Flare Dancers
Two Flare Dancers appear during the temple’s progression. Enter each arena prepared for a mobile fire enemy rather than trying to rush directly to the exit. The important objective is to defeat the dancer so the room’s route can continue.
Keep moving while watching the enemy’s position, attack when it exposes an opening, and avoid standing in the fire trail. Once the dancer is defeated, check the room again for an opened passage, chest or switch before leaving. Missing the newly available route can make the next locked door appear impossible even though the required path is in the cleared room.

6. Claim the Megaton Hammer
The Megaton Hammer is the Fire Temple’s major item and the turning point of the dungeon. Obtain it in the mid-dungeon challenge, then test it on the heavy objects and rusted switches in the surrounding area.
After collecting the hammer, revisit routes that were visibly blocked by a heavy obstacle or a rusted switch. Hammering these targets opens sections that could not be completed with the equipment you had earlier. The hammer is also the weapon required to create openings against Volvagia, so do not leave the item room without confirming that it is in your inventory.
Use the hammer methodically:
- Strike rusted switches that have resisted ordinary attacks.
- Break or move heavy obstacles that blocked a passage.
- Check newly opened rooms for Goron cells and small keys.
- Look back at the map for branches that were previously marked but inaccessible.
The hammer does not replace your other tools. Continue using the Hookshot, bow and ordinary switches where the room calls for them.
7. Free the remaining Gorons and climb toward the Boss Key
With the hammer, continue through the upper-floor rooms. Free every Goron whose cell is now reachable and collect the small keys they provide. Several later doors depend on this sequence, so do not treat a prisoner as optional merely because the main staircase appears to continue upward.
Use the map to distinguish a new upper-floor branch from a loop back to a room you already cleared. In each new room, check for a cell first, then inspect chests, switches and locked doors. If you reach a locked door with no key, backtrack to the last unexplored branch rather than spending time searching the boss approach; the required key is obtained by completing an earlier route.

As you approach the Boss Key, the rooms become a test of all the temple’s mechanics: movement around blocks, timing through flame barriers, switch activation and hammer use. Complete the room’s mechanism before assuming that a chest or staircase is decorative. Open the chest containing the Boss Key and verify the item notification before leaving.
8. Open the return path and reach the boss door
After taking the Boss Key, use the Megaton Hammer on the large pillar or switch route that opens the return path toward the entrance area and the boss approach. This is the intended way back; it also confirms that the hammer’s heavy-impact function is being used in the final navigation section.

Follow the newly opened route, pass the previously inaccessible barriers and use the Boss Key on the boss door. A small key will not work there, so if the door refuses to open, confirm that the Boss Key chest was opened rather than another nearby chest.
How to defeat Volvagia
Recognize the attack cycle
Volvagia emerges from holes around the arena. The safe response is to move away from the fire and sweeping attacks, watch which hole the boss uses, and wait for the opening after it surfaces. Do not stand over a hole expecting a guaranteed attack; the boss can emerge elsewhere and punish a stationary position.
Strike with the Megaton Hammer
- Move clear of the fire and the boss’s sweeping movement.
- Track the hole from which Volvagia emerges.
- When its head is exposed, close the distance and hit the head with the Megaton Hammer.
- Retreat immediately after the strike and prepare for the next emergence.
Repeat the emerge, evade and hammer cycle. The hammer blow after Volvagia emerges is the core tactic and the reason the dungeon’s main item is mandatory for the encounter.
Use arrows during the flying phase
During the flying phase, arrows can weaken Volvagia according to the walkthrough guidance. Treat this as an opportunity to apply additional pressure from a distance, not as a replacement for the hammer. Keep moving while aiming, because the boss’s fire attacks continue to threaten the arena.
If you lose track of the boss, return to a mobile defensive position and wait for the next emergence rather than firing blindly. The fight is won by repeating a safe cycle, not by trying to remain beside the boss for several attacks.

Defeating Volvagia completes the dungeon’s story objective of freeing the captured Gorons and stopping the boss. Before leaving the arena, take the Heart Container. The Fire Medallion is awarded after the completion sequence.

- The Boss Key was collected and used.
- Volvagia has been defeated.
- The Heart Container has been taken.
- The Fire Medallion has been received.
If any item in this checklist is missing, finish it before treating the Fire Temple as complete. In particular, walking away from the Heart Container leaves the reward on the boss platform even though the battle itself is over.

Original layout, Master Quest and Ocarina of Time 3D
Original Nintendo 64 layout
The route in this guide is for the standard Fire Temple layout. It follows the normal sequence of Goron rescues, keys, map and compass, Flare Dancers, Megaton Hammer, Boss Key and Volvagia.
Master Quest
Master Quest changes the dungeon layout and puzzle routing. Rooms, item placement and the order in which mechanisms are solved can differ, so an original-layout guide should not be used as a room-by-room substitute. The same broad goals remain—rescue Gorons, obtain the hammer and Boss Key, and defeat Volvagia—but the path to those goals is different.
Ocarina of Time 3D
An Ocarina of Time 3D walkthrough tracks the same practical milestones: small keys, the map, the compass, the Megaton Hammer, the Boss Key and Volvagia. Use a guide labeled for that edition if its room diagrams or navigation directions do not match what you see on screen.

I have reached a locked door but have no small key
Return to the most recent unexplored branch and inspect every accessible Goron cell. Small keys are tied to the dungeon’s rescue and exploration route, and they are consumed when used. Check whether you spent a key on a side door before opening the main progression door.
I cannot find the next Goron
Compare your current rooms with the Dungeon Map and use the Compass’s chest markers to identify branches you skipped. A cell may be behind a block, a flame wall or a rusted switch that only became usable after obtaining the Megaton Hammer.
The hammer does not seem to open anything
Look for rusted switches and heavy obstacles in rooms you previously passed. Strike those targets with the Megaton Hammer, then inspect the newly revealed route for a cell, key or staircase. The large pillar or switch route near the end is also required to open the return path toward the boss approach.
The Boss Key does not open the door
Confirm that you are at the boss door and that the item in your inventory is the Boss Key, not a small key. If the key is missing, use the map and compass to retrace the upper-floor rooms and complete any remaining block, torch, switch or flame-wall mechanism.

Do not remain beside the boss after a hammer strike. Move away from the fire, identify the next emergence hole and wait for the next opening. Arrows may weaken Volvagia while it is flying, but the hammer strike to the exposed head remains the reliable center of the strategy.
