To complete a Vault in Minecraft: Vault Hunters 3rd Edition, finish the objective shown at the top of the screen after you enter. You need a Vault Crystal to activate a Vault Portal. Make one by bringing Vault Rock to the Vault Altar, supplying the materials shown in its recipe, and activating the altar with redstone. Use the completed crystal on a Vault Portal to open the Vault. The official Vault Crystals guide explains the crystal system; follow the in-game Quest Book for progression.
- Find Vault Rock and use it at the Vault Altar.
- Supply the recipe materials displayed by the altar.
- Activate the altar with redstone to create a Vault Crystal.
- Use the crystal on the Vault Portal and enter.
- Read the objective displayed at the top of the screen before choosing a route.
Crystals can also be customized at a Crystal Workbench with Seals, Augments, Catalysts, Inscriptions, and Capstones. Which options you can use depends on progression, recipe access, installed version, and the run you want to create, so check those requirements rather than relying on a generic modification recipe.

How to finish each Vault objective
A Vault has one objective, selected randomly or determined by a Seal or Crystal. The objective tells you what counts as completion; the official Vault Objectives guide describes the six objective types and their finish mechanics.

Completing an objective awards a Completion Crate and additional Vault XP. The crate can be opened in the overworld. Required counts and item quantities can vary with the generated objective, so use the amounts displayed in your run rather than assuming a fixed total.

Choose a route around the objective
- Meter or exploration tasks: Elixir asks you to build progress through looting, mining, and combat; Cake Hunt advances room by room. Keep the relevant objective text in view as you explore.
- Search-and-return tasks: Scavenger requires a turn-in, while Rune Boss requires returning to the boss room after collecting runes. Note where the required destination is before moving far from it.
- Exit-dependent tasks: Light the Braziers ends by leaving through the Vault Portal; Bingo ends at a Grid Gateway; Cake Hunt uses a Cake pedestal when you are ready to leave.
The official objective descriptions establish the mechanics, not a controlled difficulty ranking. No objective is universally the easiest: the practical challenge depends on the generated requirements and your character and game settings.
Prepare for survival
Healing is unavailable inside the Vault, according to the official Beginner’s Guide. Before entering, check that you have the Heal ability selected or bring a supported Vault Potion. The right equipment and consumables depend on your level, gear, difficulty settings, and modpack patch; the cited guides do not establish a universal best loadout.

Version and setup scope
These mechanics are for Vault Hunters 3rd Edition. The official installation guide identifies Minecraft 1.18.2 and Java 17, recommends 8 GB of RAM, and lists about 3 GB of free disk space. Those are installation-guide specifications, not a guarantee that every later modpack release has identical requirements; verify them against the version you install.
